macOS Mojave: Text file that I downloaded from my personal Google Drive triggers App Security Check?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 09:57 PM PDT

I have a large (a few GB) text file that I downloaded from my personal Google Drive.

It's a text file, although it wasn't labeled with a ".txt".

When I try to open it in a text editor, I get the security warning for an unidentified App.

"mytextfile.dump" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the App Store and identified developers. Chrome downloaded this file yesterday at 11:46 PM from takeout.google.com.

Okay....so I cmd-i to get file Info, and under the preview tab, it shows the text. It looks good.

I change the file extension so it's now mytextfile.txt. I still get the security issue?

Is this a bug? Is there some low-level flag that makes it look like an app? Or is there a hidden app attached to it? What's going on?

Yes, tried to cd into it from the Terminal, and it says it isn't a directory. Yes, I tried ls -l on it, and no, it wasn't executable.

I also tried mdls mytextfile.txt and the first entry is:

_kMDItemDisplayNameWithExtensions  = "mytextfile.app"

I'm out of ideas.

Books: Copy iTunes Store info to iCloud? What could possibly go wrong? (multiple Apple IDs)

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 09:24 PM PDT

Apple Books is showing me the following screen (2 variations):

Where it says "Info from iTunes Store account:" ...this is my secondary iTunes account (Japan store).

Apple Books is asking if I want to copy this info to my iCloud account, which is probably already associated with my primary (US store) account. And that is as it should be.

Will Apple Books be smart enough to keep the bookmarks, collections, etc separate and use the correct info depending on which account I'm logged into? Or will it stupidly overwrite the settings for my US store account?

In other words: for someone who has Apple IDs for multiple regions, is it safe to copy Books settings to iCloud?

Does macOS delete files in /tmp periodically?

How to prevent apps from accessing real MAC address?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 07:51 PM PDT

I would like to prevent apps in my M1 Mac from accessing my real MAC address is there absolutely anything that I can do to hide real MAC address from apps in my computer. If I spoof MAC address automatically at boot will this be enough to trick the apps into thinking the spoofed MAC address is my real MAC address? Or can the apps still get get to the MAC address of the network interface in my computer? Absolutely any help is appreciated.

What's the quickest way to push a screenshot from my macbook's display on to my iPhone (instead of photographing it)?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 08:47 PM PDT

I regularly take snapshots of my Macbook's screen with my iPhone to capture information I need handy, a list of library books to go hunting for, a map plus a bus schedule, etc.

My iPhone is plugged via USB into my laptop for hotspotting, it seems like there should be some way to just push the screenshot sitting on my desktop into my phone with a drag and drop, but I can't think of any.

Is it possible? If so, is it quick and easy?

There are some methods that are cumbersome in answers to Push photo from MacBook to iPhone via USB but I am hoping that with the latest software updates there might be a much faster way.

You might ask

Why not just photograph it?

Yes this works pretty well but

  1. I get pixel moire patterns at certain phone-screen distances
  2. the photos are rotated and have perspective distortion because I am really bad at holding the phone in exactly the right place.
  3. White becomes gray, and because of the screen's non-uniform illumination wrt illumination angle it's always bright in the middle and darker near the edges/corners.
  4. I get reflections from the Sun or bright lights as there is no specific anti-glare layer on macbook screens.
  5. I have to remember to move it to a special screenshot folder on my phone or it gets lost quickly as I take a ton of photos. Presumably pushing an image from my desktop should put it in a special folder.

These are not killer problems of course, but I'd really like an electronic rather than optical solution.

How do I recreate a folder/file structure with small size dummy files of the same names?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 05:42 PM PDT

I have a folder/file structure of large PDF files. I need to replace all the large PDF files with a small size dummy file of the same name while maintaining the exact same folder/file structure.

Is there a command that will allow me to do that in the Terminal on the Mac in a recursive sort of way?

Fake: $ mv /folder/**/large_file_name.pdf /folder/**/large_size_file_name_dummy_file.pdf

Safari keeps reloading and moves back to previous pages

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 07:43 PM PDT

When I open a new tab on MacBook (macOS) and type something to search for in Google, the page reloads automatically when I click in any link on Google. I do not know why?

Imagine you open Google and type YouTube and then click on the first link that appears (which must lead to YouTube), once you are in YouTube, Safari brings you back to Google (this happens like in 1 second).

This happens in any other site not especially Google.

I cleared the history but the same issue is still present.

Downgrade from iOS 15.4 to older archived backup possible?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 02:52 PM PDT

I have recently upgraded to iOS 15.4. The upgrade has made my hearing aid app not work properly. Apple blames the developer and the developer blames Apple. Anyway, I'd like to use the app as it has functionality that the native apple accessibility program doesnt have. Is it possible to restore iPhone to archived 15.1 back up I have? If so, how? Here is the archived info:

and here are 2 files I found in the trash:

Confused why one read 15.1 and the other 15.1.1, but this is what I have. Tks

FindMy app: Why is my AirTag item showing up on my iPhone, but not on my computer?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 02:46 PM PDT

On the Find My app on my iPhone, I can see my devices and one item (backpack). On my Macbook the Find My app shows my devices, but not my backpack. It doesn't seem to have an option to add items either, instead just providing one button that opens a browser tab with information about Find My. Why isn't my backpack visible on the Macbook Find My app?

Print preview to PDF in safari layout fixes - urgent!

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 01:03 PM PDT

When trying to print to PDF this page in Safari on Mac - https://theurbanwatch.com/fashion/seven-female-fashion-designers-to-celebrate-on-international-womens-day/, there are huge page breaks - how can this be fixed so the images flow from page to page, even if they are cut by pages? And on the PDF of this page- http://www.ourtownny.com/news/from-cronuts-to-croissants-MA1772790 the logo repeats itself. Is there any way to fix these? Like using the developer mode in Safari to adjust the CSS? Thanks so much!

Install Dagster on M1 MacBook

How can I restore the window location of the app some part of whose window is off the main screen?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 06:40 PM PDT

I would like to keep my Chrome window slightly off from the left hinge of the main screen of my Mac. That means that about 20% of the Chrome window is invisible, including the top-left red-yellow-green buttons.

However, whenever I close the app and launch it again, the top-left position is reverted such that the entire app is visible in my screen, which means the top-left red-yellow-green buttons of Chrome matches the position of the top-left screen of my Mac.

I would rather keep the app position, even if some parts of the app are invisible. How can I set it to open this way when I restart the app?

Also, why do some apps keep the window location while others don't?

How much memory/cpu is mds_stores consuming for you?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 03:08 PM PDT

I'm trying to figure out if the spotlight process "mds_stores" is consuming more resources than it should be. I've turned spotlight on and off and reindexed everything but it's still regularly using between 40 and 80% of the CPU on my lightly loaded system and chewing through insane amounts of memory even after a reboot. Right now, the real memory and private memory it's consuming is over 32 GB on a 64 GB machine. This doesn't seem normal to me.

As far as I can tell, Spotlight finished indexing my drive over a day ago yet mds_stores is still consuming a bunch of resources.

I've told Spotlight to ignore my external drive and the caches. Is there anything else I can do?

Hard drive full no matter what I try

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 01:00 PM PDT

I have run into the issue where no matter what files/applications I delete I cannot actually free up any disk space on my Early 2014 Macbook Air with 128GB of SSD storage. The most recent exercise was to delete Xcode ~10GB. Before the delete, the storage summary showed 3.6GB of free space. After the delete, the storage summary showed ~4.8GB of free space. What did change was the allocation between "Applications" and "System". Before the delete, System was 82GB, and Applications was 20GB, afterwards, Applications went down to 11GB, and System went up to 92GB.

Here are the items I have tried / won't consider trying:

  1. Yes, I have emptied the trash multiple times
  2. Yes, I have booted into safe mode and then back into normal
  3. No, I won't install a third-party piece of software to delete screensavers/applications backgrounds, logs. When interrogating Library and System folders those folders do not show 90GBs of usage they show something like ~10GB
  4. Yes, I have tried finding the listing of Time Machine backups and deleting them (there are none listed)

So hopefully someone has encountered this issue and found a substantive solution. I am personally wondering if the "cloud" drives I have installed are just consuming all of the free space (I have two providers).

For reference, I am running macOS 10.14 (Mojave)and I am unable to install the latest update because I cannot free up enough space on the system to do so!

How to do "unified docking": One device to Charge and connect USB to iPad Pro (USB-C) and iPhone (Lightning)

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 04:07 PM PDT

My goal is to build a station for my local dancing school with an audio interface for old iPads, iPhones and USB-C devices (Such as the iPad Pro, Android Tablets and Phones and hopefully the next iPhone)

The "station" needs to charge the mobile device and pass through USB-Data. At the moment, it is solved with the Camera Connection Kit (Charging+USB-Port to Lightning), which is plugged into a Power adapter and to the USB-Audio-Interface. However, this solution obviously only works for the old ipads and iPhones, but when a dance instructor comes and wants to connect an iPad pro or - god beware - an android device with USB-C, they completely mess up the system because they unplug all cables and then don't know how to replug them.

The question is: is there a way to have a single cable, preferably USB-C that charges and carries data and then a simple adapter or adapter cable to lighting? Are there any USB-C Docks that would work when adapted to lightning or do we need active components when adapting from lightning to usb c?

Why is my Macbook Pro going to sleep while using it?

Posted: 26 Mar 2022 01:06 AM PDT

2012 Macbook Pro 15" Non Retina Randomly goes to sleep while I'm using it. Sometimes it resets altogether. Its not a magnet, or Hot Corners It takes 30-60 seconds to wake up. The indicator light on the front lip stays solid for a long period and then fades on and off before I can wake it back up.

Touch ID Canceled by another authentication

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 02:01 PM PDT

I've had this issue over multiple iterations of OS. This began for me in High Sierra, followed into Mojave, and now into Catalina. I finally figured I'd deal with it. I've tried everything I've found currently, and nothing works.

I've done the following.

  1. Deleted everything in my Keychain folder and rebooted.

  2. Deleted the entire /Library/Keychain folder itself, and rebooted.

  3. Tested another profile, which did work, however it doesn't help me aside from knowing something's messed up with my profile.

Any other ideas before I blow this profile away? This is a work laptop so it'll be a pain to get this back to normal working order.

Clone Time Machine volume

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 03:12 PM PDT

My backup disk is getting full, so I bought a bigger one and I'm trying to copy the backups to it (the current backup size is 1.5TB)

I tried following the instructions in the official support document [edit - this has been archived, his is now a wayback link] a couple of times but it didn't work: this dialogue came up, incremented slowly for several days, but when it had gone no copy was made:

enter image description here

I had a look through the console output, but couldn't find anything indicating what the problem might have been.

I have also tried restoring to the target drive using Disk Utility, but that gives me this error:

Validating target...
Validating source...
Source volume format on device "/dev/disk5" is not valid for restoring
Could not validate source - Operation not permitted
The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 1.)

Both the old and new disks are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) 1. The old disk has two partitions.

I know I can't use rsync to do a copy as it doesn't respect the hard links TM uses, so is there anything else I can do to transfer the files? If I have to buy disk cloning software that's OK, as I really don't want the backup disk to fill up, as that has happened to me before and I lost data.

I run OSX as a standard user, rather than as an admin. Could that be a contributing factor?

1 I know case-sensitive is not recommended for TM backups, but this backup has been going for years and although I have vague memories of something-something-case-sensitive-something-something I cannot remember for the life of me why the backup disk is formatted this way, and I don't think I can change it now.

Overcast app: Do Smart Playlists have a limit on the number of episodes they can contain?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 09:30 PM PDT

I use Overcast on my iPhone and have several Smart Playlists set up. I was using one of them to play back the entire back catalogs of 4 podcasts that I wanted to catch up on. This is roughly 500 episodes altogether. I had no trouble creating the playlist but when I look at the list of included episodes it leaves out several hundred of the oldest episodes and seems to start the list at an arbitrary point in time and go from there to the present.

If I look at each of the podcasts individually I've marked all of the episodes in each one unplayed and can see all episodes in each one. If I play from the individual podcast then it starts with the oldest episode and automatically moves to the next newer one when finished. It's only in the Smart Playlist that I can't see the oldest episodes.

If I create a new Smart Playlist and only include one of the podcasts then I see all of the episodes for that podcast. When I add another one it to the playlist I suddenly can't see the oldest episodes from either one any more.

Is there a limit on the number of episodes that can be in a playlist?

Thanks in advance!

Google Photos won't stop syncing on iOS

Posted: 26 Mar 2022 12:02 AM PDT

I have Google Photos installed on my iPhone 6S and would like it to stop automatically syncing my photos. I like to view my pictures but don't want everything backed up.

I have gone into settings on the app and turned off "Backup & sync" but if I take a picture it still gets uploaded! I've tried restarting the app and the iPhone but it still does it.

Why does my brew installation not work?

Posted: 25 Mar 2022 05:01 PM PDT

I installed brew before, but it does not work now.

When I run brew, it gives me the error -bash: brew: command not found

So I tried to reinstall using the code

ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

But it gives me another one :

It appears Homebrew is already installed. If your intent is to reinstall you should do the following before running this installer again: rm -rf /usr/local/Cellar /usr/local/.git && brew cleanup

If I use the command rm -rf /usr/local/Cellar /usr/local/.git && brew cleanup, it gives back the first error : -bash: brew: command not found

What should I do now?
