iMac "pauses" every minute or so Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:52 AM PDT I have an older (2010) iMac that has been running smoothly until a few weeks ago. Since then, the computer has started to "pause" in increasing frequency. During the "pauses", the computer stops whatever it is doing – streaming a movie (the movie freezes), updating text that I type (the text cursor freezes), switching to a different tab or menu in an app (the view doesn't switch) – and seems stuck for about half a minute, then it continues and works normally for another few minutes. While the computer pauses, I can still move the mouse pointer nomally and even switch to another app by clicking on its window. Switching to another app by keyboard shortcut doesn't work. Sometimes I can, and sometimes I cannot use this other app normally for a brief period before it "pauses" also. Usually all open apps are stuck in this way at the same time. Sometimes, the spinning beachball appears. I have already erased the hard drive and reinstalled the system (the most recent version this iMac is compatible with is 10.13), but the problem persists, so it must be hardware related or system software related. The mouse is connected by a USB cable, the keyboard by Bluetooth, which might have something to do with the mouse working during the "pause". The "pauses" have increased in frequency. At first, a few weeks ago, it was just a streaming movie "hanging" every couple of minutes, and I thought it was due to a network problem (e.g. the streaming server being overloaded), but two days ago the "pause" began to happen every minute or so, and the frequency hasn't dropped since then. Anyone know what the problem might be and what I might try to do? |
How to reinstall Mac OS X from Ubuntu [duplicate] Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:18 AM PDT I bought a 2010 iMac (iMac11,2) at an op shop today, to upgrade from my 2007. All fine, except it's (solely) running Ubuntu (turn it on, you hear the Mac boot up sound and a second later it's the black screen with an underscore). I don't know the first thing about Ubuntu and have no interest in it, I'd just like to use it as a regular Mac. How do I do that? Cheers |

Accidentally triggering the comment window in Youtube landscape Posted: 23 Mar 2022 08:26 PM PDT Has anyone had this experience where they are watching a video in landscape mode and they accidentally bring up the comment window but they don't know how they did it?? Sometimes when viewing a video in landscape mode in the Youtube app I will tap my finger twice: once to bring up the progress bar and once to make it go away, just so I can see where I'm at in the video. But sometimes this inadvertently brings up the comment section and puts the video in half screen mode which is annoying. And I swear, I am just tapping twice in the same location, I don't see how that could be mistaken as another gesture. Even more annoying is that when I try to bring up the comment window on purpose I can NEVER do it, no matter what gestures I try!! So I would just like someone to tell me how to trigger the comment window so that I can avoid accidentally triggering it. Is the Youtube app just buggy? |
Posted: 23 Mar 2022 08:18 PM PDT I have always assumed that when I make a voice call from the FaceTime app on my iMac, the call is being proxied through my iPhone. (In fact, the FaceTime UX says, Call Using iPhone; see attached image.) However, today I tried an experiment: I switched off both my iPhone and my iPad--which has a cellular plan; I also turned off the WiFi on my iMac so that it was connected to the Internet only through an Ethernet cable to my router. I then used FaceTime on my iMac to call my landline. The call went through, reaching the answering machine hooked up to that phone. My question is: How did this work? Does my iMac have some sort of VOIP system that it can use if it can't access a cellular device? I am running macOS Big Sur 11.6.5 (20G527) |
Posted: 23 Mar 2022 08:16 PM PDT I just noticed that some of my songs that Apple Music is marking as Uploaded rather than Matched, are actually greyed out on the album page within Apple Music. If I try to add these streaming versions to my library, these tracks are unplayable, and have a dotted cloud icon as well as a message saying that they are no longer available. So, I guess the obvious reason these particular tracks aren't getting matched is that they are not actually in the Apple Music catalog. However, if I look up the same album in the iTunes Store, more often than not I find that the tracks are available for purchase. Does iTunes Match match tracks to a different catalog than Apple Music? I guess what I'm saying is, if I were to cancel my Apple Music subscription and get an iTunes Match subscription (something I've been thinking of doing), would it only match my tracks against the iTunes Store's catalog instead of Apple Music's, to see if they are in there? Or are the services actually supposed to check both catalogs? It seems like the timings and metadata (and likely the music files themselves) are the exact same between the two services, but if each service only checks its respective catalog, and I run into cases like this where one service has something that the other doesn't... it makes me wonder if I really need both services, in order to check my music against everything that Apple has available out there? |

Posted: 23 Mar 2022 07:45 PM PDT This morning after Time Machine did its usual backup, I decided to to the update to macOS 12.3 on my MacBook Pro 13" 2020 (no repairs have been done on this unit). System Update downloaded the installer and began the process of updating my system. After a reboot, the Mac rebooted with the big Apple on the screen with the progress bar underneath. I noticed that the progress bar was at the same point for over half an hour so I opted to reboot the Mac. Big Apple appears with progress bar and as before it stops at about 20% in. I reset the SMC, same as before. I booted into Recovery Mode and checked the disk for errors. There were several errors related to Time Machine snapshots. I tried repairing several times with the same results. I decided to reinstall Monterey. The laptop starts the download and proceeds to do the installation. Upon the reboot, I get the Big Apple with progress bar but now it stops at about 90%. I tried to reinstall Monterey twice with the same results. I went back into Disk Utility to run First Aid and there were no longer any errors. At this point, I am guessing that I need to format the drive, install Monterey, and restore from backup (thank goodness I have one). Am I at the right conclusion? Is there anything else that I can do before doing a format/reinstall? If I do have to format, which partition do I erase the one labeled "MacBook" or "Macintosh - Data"? |
Enable scrolling using hot key and left mouse button Posted: 23 Mar 2022 06:42 PM PDT I have a Logitech M705 (marathon performance plus) mouse, plus the MK 710 Keyboard, I use Logi Options on macOS Big Sur and Mojave (2 separate macs). Recently I started to have pains on my hand /wrist and correlate them to be using frequently the Middle mouse button to scroll through many tools such as IDEs and Chrome. I want to be able to push a hot key – such as Alt (= ⌥ option) – and to enable scrolling by (left button) clicking and dragging the mouse to any direction of the screen. Is this achievable? Ideally I would like to avoid writing scripts or install 3rd-party tools, but I'm open if there is no other choice |
Can macOS Monterey's video effects (e.g. portrait) be used using an external webcam? Can 2021 MacBook Pro be permanently set to have display brightness of 1000 nits? Posted: 23 Mar 2022 09:19 PM PDT It was promising to hear that the new MacBook Pros have a display brightness of 1000 nits (peak brightness of 1600 nits): However, a more recent review of the laptops said:

Safari on IOS doesn’t save cookies Posted: 23 Mar 2022 07:05 PM PDT iPhone, latest IOS, Safari. I do very little web browsing from my phone; in most cases, I just open Safari and search for something. I always had this rather frustrating issue: every time I search for something, Google (which is my default search engine) asks me to accept cookies before displaying search results. Digging more deeply, I discovered that the problem seems to be related to cookies: Safari just doesn't seem to save any cookie at all; if f.e. I log in to a web site, the next time I go there I will be asked to log in again; anything I do on a web site (including clicking "Accept" on Google's disclaimer) is lost the next time I open it. The option to block all cookies is not enabled. Why is this happening, and how can I avoid it? Example:I definitely logged in to this very site from my phone to ask this question. |
How do I update my root certificates on an older version of Mac OS (e.g. El Capitan)? Posted: 23 Mar 2022 06:39 PM PDT I have difficulty reaching various secure web sites. They give me a certificate expired error. They work on Firefox but not Safari or Chrome. They also work on newer versions of macOS (e.g. Catalina, Big Sur). This seems to be because Safari and Chrome use the OS root certificate store and Firefox uses its own, and El Capitan is not being updated. From here there are:

macOS BigSur keep booting from external backup disk (made with CCC) Posted: 23 Mar 2022 10:03 PM PDT My Mac is on BigSur and I am using Carbon Copy Cloner to create a one on one disk which is bootable also. I have this setup running for years now and never noticed any problems – also on BigSur it worked. Now my Backup Drive crashed and I bought a new HDD. I have exactly build this HDD (one 1 TB partition for CCC for the one on one copy and another 1 TB partition for TimeMachine). But two major problems: The clone partition is the one that get booted after a restart – I also cannot choose another startup disk from system preferences since I only can see the actual booted one. So when I had booted with system SSD only this disk is shown and when I booted from the backup disk only this ons is shown. But the mac should boot from the internal disk by default, what could happened here? The Drive was always plugged in in a Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I also recently switched to an eGPU (Razer Core X Chroma) which now operates as my dock where the HDD is attached. But I think the problem occurred since the new replacement disk. Also when I plug in that drive directly on my macbook this drive get booted on restart. Another issue is that the TimeMachine partition of the disk get mountet sporadically and is making intense work but not running a time machine backup. I tried to disable the volume on spotlight which presents an error (time machine backup cannot be excluded since they are always excluded – something like that) but disabled it by command line with Maybe you have an idea. Thanks! -- Update The regular automatic TimeMachine backup is disabled – I have an own task that runs every hour that mounts the volume, do the TM backup and unmount it. That also worked for years now. |
How to add Screen Recording permission to Google Chrome in Catalina? Posted: 23 Mar 2022 06:55 PM PDT Please note: this question is very similar to this one and others, but none of them involve giving Google Chrome access to the Screen Recording permission! The link above is for giving Slack permission, but that is not what I'm trying to do, and as you'll see by my screenshot below, Catalina is behaving especially strange in the case of Chrome. Please do not DV/CV as a dupe! Mac OS Catalina 10.15.3 here. In Chrome I am joining a Google Meet video conference and cannot present my screen because Chrome doesn't have screen recording permission. The generally accepted solution is to go to However when I go to Which indicates only my Slack app has screen recording privileges. I need to add Google Chrome to this list, but I can't figure out how to do that! I do not see where I can search for apps to add to the Screen Recording permissions list. Any ideas? If I try to present my screen from inside an existing Google Meet meeting, I get a warning that I need to give my camera permission, and I am given a link to go into System Preferences and change permissions. However when I click the link, again, only Slack is available as an option. |
com.apple.pc.launchd keeps respawning every 10 seconds -- problem with MRT, MRTd? Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:06 AM PDT I am running OS X El Capitan, on an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010). Using "top," I noticed that my systems was always running "ReportCrash"; I looked into the logs, and found: Looks like there is a problem with MRT, MRTd. Are those security thingies? I know very little… User Diagnostic Report: System Diagnostic Report: Okay. I fiddled some more. . . . cd /System/Library/CoreServices/MRT.app/Contents/MacOS/ ./MRT cd /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/ ls Headers PlugIns Security _CodeSignature MachServices Resources XPCServices Okay. Now this is REALLY disturbing. . . . codesign --verbose --verify --deep Security I am also having some strange problems: The browser (Safari) keeps continuously loading new pages, on YouTube "you might be interested in-thingie" (individual ones, work fine). Also, Google Mail's "new interface," sometimes requires me to log in, multiple times. Otherwise, it goes goes back to the my original page, when I start the browser. I am interested in not just fixing my problem, but in the integrity of my system. |
AppleScript to check if fn key is depressed? Posted: 24 Mar 2022 03:41 AM PDT How can I return 1 when the fn is depressed and 0 otherwise? I found this page that claims it has a solution but it relies on an external shell script file (I'd rather have a pure AppleScript solution if that's possible) which I can't download because it redirects me through some weird dutch scam sites. The aim of this is actually to have a way of checking for function key + fn key combinations in ControllerMate, which doesn't seem to have a way to check if fn is pressed or not. |

How to set up a local calendar while using iCloud for other calendar on mavericks Posted: 24 Mar 2022 03:00 AM PDT I would like to have some additional calendars that are not synced through iCloud on one of my computers. I have been using this calendar to run small programs at certain times. These programs are however only (a) available on this one machine and (b) would not even be allowed on e.g. an iPad. As I am currently forced to sync the calendar to all my devices however my iPad is turning the custom alerts into normal standard alerts. Breaking the entire calendar. Is there a way around this?
