UPPAAL: bad CPU type in executable Posted: 10 Mar 2022 02:57 AM PST I am using the terminal on an Apple M1 MacBook. I am executing the terminal with Rosetta, trying to be compatible for a tool that is not for ARM. The tool itself is the UPPAAL tool for 32-bit Mac OS X, version 4.0.13. The program opens but I get an error when trying to use it: I am getting this error if I try to use the script and if I try to run manually the executables, even if I am trying to execute them with "arch -x86_64" before them. I acknowledge that the problem is probably caused because my computer is ARM-based while this is probably not an ARM code. However, would it be possible to sort this out with Rosetta or any similar tool? Perhaps Rosetta is not working properly on my computer? |

MBP Screen flicker only when no external display Posted: 10 Mar 2022 02:39 AM PST My Mid 2014 retina macbook pro with GT750M has recently developed a fault where the screen will start to flicker -- two images of the display, offset by half the width of the screen (the exact offset differs over time). After a minute or so it goes black. This happens immediately the computer gets to the login page (the boot screen with the apple logo and the boot progress bar is fine), so doesn't seem heat related. The interesting thing is that if I connect an external monitor, everything is fine. Both the internal and external screens behave completely normally. But even switching the monitor to a different HDMI input, while leaving the cable connected, immediately produces the flicker. If I switch the monitor back to the MacBook Pro input, the internal monitor recovers after a few seconds -- sometimes, sometimes it needs a restart. It also works with the laptop closed, and the external display connected. I have not yet taken the computer to a Genius. I have reset the PRAM and SMC. The computer is showing "service recommended" on the battery, and seems to run the fans a lot, but everything works perfectly other than the display problem. What is the actual difference between the state of the video when an external monitor is selected? Is there any way to enter this state when one isn't? |
Posted: 10 Mar 2022 02:14 AM PST I damaged a bootcamp install on container 'disk1' by deleting the windows partition installed there. I want to install a second windows bootcamp to access and/or repair 'disk1' but I don't want Bootcamp Assistant to touch 'disk1'. I want it to create a new container 'disk2' to try to get at fix the files in windows 'disk1' partition. My options:
Its a MacBook Pro with an SSD so I think Trim has erased the data. I just want to try something. Acronis perhaps from another windows install? Container with deleted partition I am trying to recover. Trying to install another bootcamp to repair disk1 but I want it to use a different container like disk2 so it doesn't touch disk1. |
iPhone: prevent the access to some domains if I am not connected to VPN Posted: 10 Mar 2022 02:14 AM PST My iPhone is connected to the WiFi of the company I am working in. My VPN is almost always activated so I hope that the domain names I visit are hidden to my employer. Sometimes, the VPN is not activated:
At that very moment the VPN is not activated, is it possible to prevent my iPhone to access specific domain names? Edit: or maybe there are alternative solutions, based on Tor/Brave browser which would hide the visited domain names or DNS-over-HTTPS implementations? |
Does macOS use driverless printing? [closed] Posted: 10 Mar 2022 01:12 AM PST There is this technology called driverless printing, where you don't need to install drivers on the client device that is priting (like a laptop, desktop or phone). I was wondering if macOS supports the protocol that backs this up? |
All iOS App suddenly won't open anymore on macOS Big Sur (M1 Mac Mini)? Posted: 10 Mar 2022 02:10 AM PST And I have exactly zero idea where to start finding for solution. It doesn't bounce on the dock like loading, nothing at all. Everything is updated from system updates and app store, I didn't upgrade to Monterey yet, but if nothing works that would be my next plan. |
How to decode DNSServiceQueryRecord requests for debugging purposes? Posted: 10 Mar 2022 12:47 AM PST I am currently trying to debug an undesired 30s delay in an application that is caused by some DNS queries which I was able to stop inside the Console.app. The problem is that what is logged is almost useless and only a mask.hash is logged and not the real query. How can I identify the real queries? |

Late 2014 crashing a few times an hour, but not in safe mode. Now what? Posted: 09 Mar 2022 11:09 PM PST I have a late 2014 (latest version of Big Sur) I'm using as a second computer. It has a nearly fresh OS install with only a few apps installed a a few homebrew packages installed. As the title states, the computer crashes very frequently when not in safe mode. Not sure how to further isolate the problem. And guidance appreciated. I ran Also did a pram reset but that didn't help. Thanks. |
iCloud storage maxed drive before update to Monterrey Posted: 10 Mar 2022 01:50 AM PST Preface: I'm a Windows power user with Unix experience. I thought I could help a friend work through an upgrade from high Sierra to Monterrey on a MacBook Air 2015. Unfortunately, the update ended up stuck in a boot loop. When I went into disk viewer in recovery mode, I found that the primary hard drive was ~90% full of shared iCloud junk from my friend's other iCloud users. Obviously, I could go in and rm a bunch of directories, but I'm worried that doing so would delete those files in the synced computers. How do I safely delete enough iCloud files to finish the Monterrey upgrade? Currently, I'm planning on removing my friend from the iCloud shared account so that file changes don't permeate to the other computers. |
Cannot connect to App Store with VPN Posted: 09 Mar 2022 07:24 PM PST I'm using Outline VPN hosted on my own VPS on Hetzner. When VPN is turned on App Store gives the "cannot connect to App Store" message in the App Store app. Every website I've tested worked fine so I don't thinks there's a problem with VPN itself. What can be the problem in this case? Does Apple block access from some subnets or something, is that a known issue? |
Podcast app keeps trying to play old, played podcasts Posted: 09 Mar 2022 06:48 PM PST I normally listen to podcasts on my Apple Watch while taking walks. Sometimes when I am caught up, it starts playing old podcast episodes from the past. I fast forward through them and then an even older podcast episode comes up. I try various things to get rid of them, but they don't seem to go away until I get new episodes of podcasts. Right now my iMac has an old episode in "Listen Now". I can mark it as "unplayed", so it knows it's already been played. How do I get rid of these already played episodes while awaiting the next unplayed episode to arrive? |

How to wipe Apple hardware to NIST "PURGE" standard? Posted: 09 Mar 2022 05:16 PM PST I have a bunch of apple hardware at work that is to be destroyed, because the security guys claim it can't be wiped to NIST PURGE compliance. All the PC hardware can achieve this level, and we have a specific piece of licenced software authorised to do this, and provide reports. The cleared PC kit gets donated onward to local charities, minimising waste and all that good stuff. If the macs get destroyed instead of reused, then there's no way for those users to experience a mac environment, and they get stuck with windows or maybe a linux distro. To be clear - the minimum requirement is "NIST Purge" compliance. I've managed to boot the authorised software on minis and achieved "NIST Clear" levels, which is insufficient. There's a halfway house of removing the M2 cards from mac minis and onward-donating the remains, but that's sub-optimal. And for many of the MBP and Air laptops, they are "un- upgradeable" suggesting the storage is soldered to the mainboard leaving destruction as the only option. What can I do to achieve PURGE status on mac hardware? Specifically for me, the hardware is

External SSD connected with adapter won't show up in Disk Utility Posted: 10 Mar 2022 02:17 AM PST I recently bought an SSD (SanDisk Plus, 480GB, 2.5", SATA III) and tried to connect it to my MacBook Pro (M1, 2020) by chaining:

Preview automatically password protects PDF when saving Posted: 09 Mar 2022 06:07 PM PST I experienced a behaviour I've never seen before when opening, editing and saving a PDF today. As soon as save the PDF with Preview the file will be password protected, and I cannot open it again. I've tested this on multiple files, but it seems to only affect files that have an "administrator password" set. Test files from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency: https://www.forsakringskassan.se/wps/wcm/connect/b581c10a-8782-4c84-8448-4a469b85422b/fk7457-004-f-002.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&CVID=&CACHE=NONE&CONTENTCACHE=NONE Is this behaviour somehow by design? I've never seen it before, and at first I suspected that some kind of malware caused this. But now I'm not so sure anymore. I'm using macOS Monterey 12.2. |
MacOS Big Sur does not accept SSH key Posted: 10 Mar 2022 12:12 AM PST I am trying to perform a password-less access from a Linux system to a MacOS system using SSH private / public keys I am generating the keys on the Linux system using and then copy the public key to my MacOS system using Then I call and I get different results when using Big Sur (Version 11.1) and Catalina (Version 10.15.7)! On Catalina, everything works fine and I get access without a password prompt: On Big Sur the same id_rsa failed: I checked the file permissions on both system and they are identical und also the configuration file /etc/ssh/sshd_config is the same on both systems. Is there anything else in Big Sur, which has to be changed to allow password-less access from a remote system? Any help is appreciated! |
Posted: 09 Mar 2022 09:07 PM PST I have a very simple question about custom alert tones on iPhones, which there doesn't seem to be any good Google hits for: Is there any possible way whatsoever to install your own custom "alert tone" / notification signals (not ringtones!) on an iPhone? And when I say "your own custom", I do not mean purchasing alert tones from the Apple store, but rather, importing them from whatever audio you have in your iTunes library, or somewhere else. There are a lot of apps for making custom ringtones (including Garageband), but none of them seem to be able to save these as "alert tones" (notification tones) in iOS, but rather just ringtones. The problem with this is that most other apps that allow you to customize their notification sounds (e.g. Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp etc), only allow you to choose from the "alert tones" list in iOS, rather than the "ringtones" list, which makes this distinction critical indeed. There a lots and lots of tutorials and apps online that claim to be able to install custom alert tones / notification tones, but every single one that I have found end up installing a custom "ringtone" after all. :-( If the answer to my question is "no", an extra bonus question would be: Why on earth would Apple lock down such a feature? |
Bluetooth device connected but not showing up in Output Device Posted: 10 Mar 2022 02:06 AM PST In order to remove another audio device from my Mac, I deleted the HAL folder from Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/ (This is the advice I got from a quick google search, I don't understand the mechanics of it at all) It removed the device I wanted to remove but now my Galaxy buds are not working. They connect to the bluetooth successfully for a few seconds and then disconnect automatically. Even when they are connected, the headphones do not show up in the list of Output devices. If someone has any solutions, please help me out. |
Zoom, Gallery mode - force to always show users with video first, and then users without videos Posted: 09 Mar 2022 05:00 PM PST Most times Zoom (on iPad) in Gallery mode shows all users with videos first, and then users without videos. But sometimes Zoom shuffles users with videos with users without videos. Can you tell me please is there a way to force described behaviour in Zoom? |
Too large Other Volume in Container Posted: 10 Mar 2022 01:00 AM PST My Mac show disk full and realized that I can use only 100 GB (Out of 500 GB). I checked Storage and realized that there are a lot of space for "Other Volume in Container". So I check diskutil list in terminal and found below I know APFS Volume disk1s5 and disk1s6 but I am not sure what is disk1s1. It is not visualized it in DiskUtil also. Does someone know how to increase available volume? Or how to delete that disk1s1 volume? Below is the command result from "diskutil apfs list" Thank you! |
Posted: 09 Mar 2022 11:03 PM PST The sound on my Windows 10 bootcamp installation on my 2019 13-inch Touch Bar MBP is HORRIBLE! It sounds muted and has no bass at all volume levels. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, but it didn't help at all. |

How do I use the Highlight Selection tool after taking a screenshot? Posted: 10 Mar 2022 12:12 AM PST After taking a screenshot in macOS, I bring up the markup dialog (introduced in macOS Mojave) and try to use the highlighter tool, but it seems to do nothing. How do you git fetch all repos in a folder? Posted: 09 Mar 2022 11:04 PM PST I keep all the repositories I work on in a folder on my machine I imagine that, if it's possible, it might look something like this pseudocode: I tried Tower which does not appear to offer this. I also tried GitHub Desktop, which provides irregular support for highlighting some local repositories whose remotes have updates. |

How do I change a device name from the iCloud web site? Posted: 09 Mar 2022 07:08 PM PST My family has several iPhones listed under the "Find my iPhone" section of the iCloud web site. Unfortunately, they all have the same name "'s iPhone". Two of the phones are older models and have been given to other family members. One of them I have been able to change the name directly on the device. The other I cannot change the name directly on the device because the device currently won't power up. One day I hope to fix this, so I don't want to remove the device from the account. But at the same time, it's annoying having two devices with the same name. The other device is correctly named, so I don't want to change its name, I want to change the name of the (currently) inoperative device. How can I do this directly from the iCloud web site? |
