Are my Facebook Messenger messages being read? Posted: 16 Oct 2021 11:30 PM PDT I sent a Facebook Messenger message I want to meet and therefore was not added to my friends list or any list on Facebook (he has an iPhone). I just got a "Sent" receipt on my side and I also know that he (the recipient) got a notification on their iPhone lock-screen stating: " …myName wants to send you a message". Can I know if he has read it or not? What I find strange is that at least I should have got a "Delivered" mark on my side. Has he disabled read receipts somehow? (I learnt that you cannot disable read-receipts on iPhones). Even if he has disabled this somehow, shouldn't I get at least a "delivered" mark? Any help much appreciated |
Mobile devices: Does using a protection case decrease the life expectation of the battery? Posted: 16 Oct 2021 11:12 PM PDT Some people say that using an iPhone-, iPad-, Watch-case does reduces the life expectation of the battery. I could imagine that it's true, because the heat drain becomes worse. On the other hand is the protection that the device gets from using a case beyond doubt. Is it proven, that protection cases decrease the life expectation of a battery? What's the general recommendation concerning protection cases? Does Apple self recommend it at all? |
Posted: 16 Oct 2021 09:46 PM PDT I've been using org-mode in Emacs for a while now; specifically, I've installed emacs-mac with A problem I've consistently had with my setup, however, is that when running Is there anyone that could help me with this? UPDATE: I've simply hardcoded org-latex-pdf-process with the full path to pdflatex, which works fine. I'm still not sure why Emacs can't find it when all the paths are set, but whatever, it's working now I guess. |
Mac OSX artificially restricts speeds to 100 Mbps over ethernet Posted: 16 Oct 2021 05:52 PM PDT Overview I have a 1 Gbps connection via a Cat 6 ethernet cable to my Macbook (MBP 16 2019). The ethernet cables connect to the thunderbolt port via a dock supporting a 1 Gbps networking and my router, switch and modem all support 1 Gbps speeds. I have tried this with 2 other docks/ethernet to thunderbolt ports and can reproduce the issue. The issue Whenever I restart the machine or I freshly connect the dock (or even just the CAT cable to the dock), I get the specified 1 Gbps speeds on my machine. However, after a few minutes of usage (this varies between 5 - 30 minutes), the speeds drop to 118 Mbps / 118 Mbps If I disconnect and reconnect the dock or the network cable, it sometimes fixes the issue and sometimes it doesn't and my speed is limited to 118 Mbps (exact). My Network > Advanced setting on my Ethernet looks like this: and shows T1000 with duplex I have tried all suggestions on various Apple forms like this one and they haven't worked for me. It is like the Mac suddenly decides that it cannot support 1 Gbps and switches to 118 Mbps (why exact 118 Mbps though?) What setting can I check/change to fix this issue? I am on macOS Big Sur 11.6 on the Intel Core i9 if that helps. |

Posted: 16 Oct 2021 04:44 PM PDT I was recently considering buying an Apple iPhone 13 Pro. I like to ensure all of my devices are protected with passwords, having had a prior negative experience with a rogue organisation which could effortlessly crack my phone's PIN code. This is not to forget that an adversary can also force one into using biometrics. I have also read that iPhones made since 2017 are no longer supported by Cellebrite cellular cracking and forensics suite, but I like to be cautious. Could someone please confirm if it is possible to use a password instead of a passcode for an Apple iPhone 13? Through my numerous searches it appears that Apple only supports PIN and biometrics. |

Bulk download sideloaded books from iCloud Posted: 16 Oct 2021 01:44 PM PDT I have about 4,000+ books that have been backed up to iCloud from an older iPad. Is there a way to bulk download all of the books to my new iPad. At present, I can only download them one by one in the library. |
What is the purpose of having a mac connected to an iPhone/iPad through bluetooth panel Posted: 16 Oct 2021 01:12 PM PDT I am not talking about handoff or things like that, these work perfectly for me among all my devices, macs, iPhones, iPads, etc. I am talking about this: I have noticed an entry with my computer name inside the bluetooth preferences of my iPad and an entry with my iPad name inside the bluetooth settings of my mac. Like I said, everything like handoff, clipboard between devices, etc. were working fine. Both entries were marked NOT CONNECTED. I clicked both and all connections now say CONNECTED? What is going on here? What can I do now that I could not before? |
iOS does not alert to texts if macOS is in DND Posted: 16 Oct 2021 02:52 PM PDT I have had a chronic issue with inconsistent alerts flowing through my Apple ecosystem, and I think I might have just figured out why. I have a 2018 MBP, and original iPhone SE, and an Apple Watch Series 2. The iPhone is set to forward texts to the MBP. I have haptic alerts enabled for the watch. My wife is set as "Emergency Bypass" so that no matter what I will (should) always receive alerts when she contacts me. It is critical that I never fail to receive these. VERY often I fail to receive alerts to text messages. This has been going on for years and I have not identified the pattern. But it just happened that she sent me 5 texts over a few minute span, and I was sitting here in my office across the house but did not get ANY alert to these at all. Turns out they were received, I could/can see them in both iOS and macOS, but I got no alert at all on either platform. This is when I realized that the MBP was in DND mode. I have it scheduled to be in DND each day during most of the day so that I don't get interrupted with calendar alerts and whatnot as I'm working. My assumption has always been that if the Mac is in DND, the alert will simply propagate through to my phone/watch instead. But it appears that this doesn't happen! What looks to be happening is that the phone received the message, and forwards it to the mac to issue any alert. But since the Mac is in DND, no alert happens, and the process stops there. No haptic alert to my watch either. But, the moment I turned off DND mode, my watch began vibrating to notify me of the messages. Still no audible alert at the phone or Mac though, I'm guessing because the messages had already been received. It looks like they were sent "fresh" to the watch upon the mac coming out of DND. So that's what's happening, and what I believe is responsible for the behavior. The question now is: How can I ensure that text messages sent to me by someone listed as "Emergency Bypass", will ALWAYS alert me audibly (and hapticly where applicable) on my mac, my phone, and my watch, regardless of DND mode on the mac or phone? |

Blank screen during installation of Windows 7 (Mid 2009 MacBook Pro) Posted: 16 Oct 2021 12:40 PM PDT I've been having a lot of issues trying to install Windows 7 on my MacBook, to eventually upgrade to Windows 11. However, after the first stage after the reboot, the system completely blank screens after selecting it in the boot picker. But, I can feel like I can tell it's running the setup because there is a red indicator in the headphone jack and sometimes, there are random pixels on the top left. I've given the bootcamp assistant way but it didn't work. I installed Yosemite, but it came up with "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". Catalina is also installed. I've tried many iso's, I find that All In One Windows 7 ISO's be able to start up plus start the installation. However, official ones doesn't boot up and shows a compatibility error. This could be the fact that Opencore Legacy is installed but I don't want catalina to be unbootable again, so I haven't tested it. However, Windows 10 and even Windows 11 USB sticks boot up and even install properly, but the graphics drivers boot loop. Is there anything I can try, because I am completely stuck? |
Macbook Pro 2015 15" DG shuts down at 50% on progress bar Posted: 16 Oct 2021 07:12 PM PDT Tried to start my Macbook last night but would restart as soon as it reached 50%~ on the progress bar. When trying to boot into a recovery mode it would restart at about 30% on the progress bar and my windows 10 install would also fail to boot. Made a Big Sur install USB on another computer and that too restarts after 30%~. So far I've tried:
None of which have changed the restart point. Did have a "Service Recommended" notice on the battery (Serial is not covered under Apple's recall, either not affected or previous owner did it), hence testing without the battery, was undervolted and wattage limited with Volta. Has Catalina, Big Sur and Windows 10 installs on it (Can see all in bootloader). Screen appears to have yellow hue in top left corner, red in top right and bottom left corner, which I don't remember seeing before. Thanks for any help. UPDATE I reopened the Macbook and noticed some very minor corrosion/some sort of goop on the magsafe connector, small enough I wouldn't have cleaned it if I did not have an issue. Ended up removing the entire logic board to check the underside at the same time and saw nothing on the backside. Decided to connect the SSD, IO board and boot it with a USB Mouse and Keyboard on a HDMI monitor. Booted right up and did the sensor freak out with Fans at 100% usage and CPU locked to 800mhz and iGPU with 0.00GHz request (Intel power gadget). Catalina, Big Sur and Windows 10 all worked fine although device manager in Windows gave the GPU a code 43 error and a facetime camera error (Wasn't connected). Slowly pieced the machine back together after this and if I connect the trackpad connector the fault returns, this connector also needs to be connected for the keyboard to work it seems. Battery is completely dead even though MacOS says it holds charge, unplugging magsafe with "55%" charge just instantly kills the machine. |
How to make Apple Watch Stop SMS/Message Notifications from Unknown Senders? Posted: 16 Oct 2021 05:55 PM PDT I receive a lot of SMS/Message Scams (perhaps 3 or 4 per day). I assume it's related to something like the flubot virus. I like turning the option under I also have an Apple Watch Series 2 which is set to mirror iphone notifications for messages. But on the Apple Watch I still receive these notifications. How can I stop receiving notifications from unknown senders on the Apple Watch? I was also wondering whether this was an issue specific to Series 2 given that it seemingly doesn't get software updates anymore. Ideally I don't want to turn off notifications from messages in general, as getting important sms on the Watch is one of the most important features for me. |
The list of audio input/output devices is empty after waking MacBook Pro M1 from sleep Posted: 16 Oct 2021 11:49 AM PDT I'm on a M1 MacBook Pro. For a couple of weeks now, every time I wake the Mac up from sleep, the list of audio devices is empty and shows "No output/input devices found," like so: I can still hear the audio coming from the MacBook speakers, however, and the item "MacBook Pro Speakers" still shows up on the Sound section of the menu bar. When I add a new sound device, for example when I plug headphones in, they show up the devices list. But if I quit and reopen System Preferences, the list shows up empty again. The main issue is that because the device list is empty, Zoom and other web meeting platforms do not recognize the output/input devices, requiring me to restart my computer before every meeting. This is what Zoom shows in their settings. Strangely, I can record just fine with Voice Memos even when the list is empty. Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this? I haven't installed any kernel extensions or things that could play with that, so I'm at a bit of a loss. |
Is there a way to remote login on Mac from PC Posted: 16 Oct 2021 02:43 PM PDT My MBP screen is broken and fixing will take time. Meanwhile I want to be able to switch it on and login to that machine. I can temporarily higher low resolution screen to login and would like to get local IP and do something like Windows Remote desktop, i.e. Work completely on same Mac but from my Ubuntu Box. Is there a way I can accomplish this? Commercial cases are ruled out as this is going to be temporary fix. |
Recover data from corrupted APFS external volume Posted: 16 Oct 2021 11:47 PM PDT In less than 2 months, Finder has managed to corrupt 2 external hard drives and make the data inaccessible. First time I gave Apple the benefit of the doubt, but when it happened AGAIN on another drive after Finder became unresponsive when trying to unmount... I blame APPLE on my pain. Anyways, the data is still there as I can see from a data recovery program, but I have to pay to recover all the data. Here's my question: How can I do this on my own? The data recovery software is able to find my files by scanning the raw data on the disk. If I could figure out what tools or commands it uses, then i'd be able to do it on my own. Some research suggests booting my machine on kali Linux, then using the DD command to access the data. Anyone familiar with this? Big Sur 11.0.1 External volume: HDD APFS |
Graphics glitch - checkered pattern in Chrome Posted: 16 Oct 2021 11:06 PM PDT I've had this MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) for a while now, but today it glitched out with huge green fields in all apps. After a reboot I see this checkered black/green glitch pattern in Google Chrome on some sites, in some "sizes". Basically if I resize the browser window the glitch goes away, but if I resize it too much it comes back. Happens both on the internal and on external display. I am hoping this is a software glitch, but I am afraid it's my graphics card. Would be very grateful if someone knows the answer. Here's the stackoverflow logo with the glitch: |
How to access older iPhone auto-backups / restore lost Safari cards? Posted: 16 Oct 2021 08:02 PM PDT Recently I've lost all my open Safari cards on my iPhone. Since i want to move my data to a new model anyway, I was just disabling wifi every time I plugged it to the charger in order to not let it auto-backup. I did not turn off the backup function, because I was too scared of the iThreat, threatening they'll delete all my iCloud files, backups, photos, etc. if i cancel anything iCloud-related. So sadly, that one time I forgot to turn off the wifi, and it did back up automatically. Since I've tried doing a computer backup many times before on many different PC's and cables, changing settings, including replacing the whole charging port, I couldn't do it, so iCloud backups are the only ones I could make. Now, as you might have guessed, the latest backup doesn't contain any of those lost 48 open cards, and the latest backup i did manually is almost half-year old. Is there any way I can get access to the older AUTOMATIC iCloud backup? If not, how do I get my cards back? They couldn't just disappear without the trace of I didn't physically press 'delete' button right?? 😰 |
How to replace fusion drive and restore MacOS? Posted: 16 Oct 2021 09:07 PM PDT I have 2014 Mac Mini with fusion drive running Catalina. If I replace original fusion SSD with bigger one, can I restore Time Machine backup or reinstall OS? |
Files grayed out in Finder. Can preview them, but cannot open, move or copy them Posted: 16 Oct 2021 06:09 PM PDT I don't know how they got this way. I have files with this problem in at least several directories. I found out about them today because I was trying to move a ton of directories to a new disk (Journaled to APFS) using Forklift (a file manager) and it couldn't move these files to the target volume. I don't know if Forklift caused this problem, or not. They are JPG photos. I can preview them by pressing {Space} in Finder. But I cannot open them with a double-click — nothing happens. If I right (or Ctrl-) click and choose "Open in Preview", I get an error box saying, "Item "DSC_1507.JPG" is used by macOS and can't be opened." macOS Catalina 10.15.5. Volume containing these files is formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". In the directory I'm focused on, most of the files are fine and only two have this problem. Here is the output of "ls -@BOaen" in that directory: The two troublesome files are DSC_1460.JPG and DSC_1507.JPG. As you can see, each is followed by this in that ls output:
I ran Disk Utility's First Aid feature on that partition and it finished without finding any problems. I've rebooted twice since running Disk Utility's First Aid. Any ideas? |
Using Raspberry Pi as a home hub for Apple HomKit setup Posted: 16 Oct 2021 05:02 PM PDT I'm trying to make my home a bit smarter using HomeKit without actually buying HomeKit accessories. Now I'm using python and the pyhap libary and it is working so far. I can control my Raspberry Pi using Apple HomeKit and the Home app. But there's one thing I consider a big disadvantage of HomeKit: it cannot be controlled from outside the Network without an iPad, HomePod or Apple TV working as a home hub. Question: Can I somehow turn my Raspberry Pi into a home hub so I can control my lights etc from outside my home? |

Posted: 16 Oct 2021 07:22 PM PDT Apple does not support Boot Camp Assistant installations of Windows 10 on 2011 and earlier iMac models. The exact list of supported Mac models is given below. The following Mac models support 64-bit versions of Windows 10 when installed using Boot Camp.
I have read where others have successfully used the Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows flash drive installer. This was accomplished by first editing a
Here is what I wish to accomplish.
I would desire to preform the installation without any of the following.
I would prefer not having to boot to macOS Recovery via the internet, built-in recovery or an USB flash drive macOS installer. But, since macOS Recovery is not a third party tool, I am not opposed to its use. |
How to download HD Youtube video on iOS? Posted: 16 Oct 2021 02:47 PM PDT There are many, Free or Paid iOS Apps to download Youtube Video. Most of them worked the same, where you paste the URL into the built in browsers, press and hold the play button to download. However most of these Apps only download the low / 360P version of the file. I wanted to save the full 720P or 1080P video, and have yet to find an Apps that does it. Anyone know of any Apps/ Ways to download the Youtube HD video on iPhone? Edit: I try using KeepVid.com, the resulted link only allows me to play the video file in Safari, and not save it. |

How do I disable this message: "the disk was not ejected properly"? Posted: 16 Oct 2021 10:47 PM PDT Is there any way to disable the "the disk was not ejected properly" message? I use a KVM and need to switch between two systems and have a memory stick that is in the KVM. The problem is that it's very annoying to get the message every time I switch from one computer to the other. I know, I can unmount it (and probably should), but I switch all the time, so it's a inconvenience to unmount, and there is nothing sensitive on the memory stick. |
