How to install kext on Big Sur?

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:39 AM PST

After updating MacOS to 11.6.2 I am having problems running Virtualbox (updated at same time). It apears that the kext are not intalled OK. Reinstalling Virtualbox several times and rebooting did not fix it.

I followed this solution:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/69839697/cant-run-virtualbox-after-updating-mac-to-12-0-1-monterey-error-with-host-only

This tells me that I need to approve Oracle within Privacy settings:

% sudo kextload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv Executing: /usr/bin/kmutil load -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv Error Domain=KMErrorDomain Code=27 "Extension with identifiers org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv,org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB,org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp,org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt not approved to load. Unfortunately there is nothing to approve:

How can this be fixed?

Freehand / Free-form / Polygon screenshots on Mac

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:17 AM PST

I know I can take screenshots of regions using the cmd + shift + 3/4/5 keys. But I want to be able to select a specific non-rectangular region to capture.

How do I capture freehand screenshots on the Mac?

In some apps, I believe this feature is called a "polygon snipping" tool? On windows it's called a free-form screenshot.

I'm looking for an app that does something like this

The app being used in the gif is Capto, but I'm hoping there's a free alternative.

'photoanalysisd' running constantly on Catalina, even though I do not use Photos.app

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:23 AM PST

I recently upgraded from Mac OS Mojave to Catalina. The other day, I noticed that a process called photoanalysisd has been running constantly at nearly 100% CPU usage for various consecutive days. It doesn't cause fans to spin loudly, but it still creates a noticeable heat on my Macbook.

What I find odd about this is that I actually do not use the Photos.app at all. I am a photographer, and I use Adobe Lightroom. All my photos are stored on an external HD which isn't normally connected to my Macbook. The Lightroom library, however, is stored on my internal SSD. There is of course also a Photos library on my internal SSD, but since I never imported anything to Photos.app, the Photos library is completely empty. This is what actually makes me wonder why the photoanalysisd process is running all the time.

I have already tried deleting the Photos Library on my SSD and have the Photos.app create a new one, but to no avail.

Does anyone know why photoanalysisd is running all the time, and if there is anything I can do to stop it?

Thanks for your help!

the "wants to make changes" dialog

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:18 AM PST

I have a bunch of questions about this dialog.

  • What part of macos pops this dialog?
  • How can I find out what resources (in this case) Adobe Installer needs access to?
  • At least, is there a way to see what changes the program made after the fact?

IMHO, this is one of the most serious atrocities of Apple's "user friendly" UI -- asking for admin password and not providing any information to help user make the decision.

Is there an app to toggle login apps? I don't want junk like CleanMyMac, just a barebones toggle app.

Wait time for resetting Apple Id account

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 09:40 PM PST

Recently, I tried the account recovery process of AppleID, which I had logged in. I had forgotten the password, and the recovery option was the last resort. I tried resetting the password by using a friend's apple device. But, there was a wait time of 24 hours. I didn't get any communication from Apple regarding my account as of now.

After that, I rechecked the next morning and the wait period had reduced to 5 hours. I want to know if I can actually get my AppleID back because many people are complaining about Apple's horrible and useless recovery process. Also, what process do I need to follow after the wait time is over, (if I can get a heads up)?

We are evaluating your information We are evaluating your information and will have an update in 5 hours. Apple Support cannot help to reduce your waiting period.

When it is time to reset your password, we will send instructions to ••••••••52.

P.S - Apple hasn't sent any email or SMS stating that a request to change my password was done, etc. I feel it's like a bad sign.

Cannot update Windows with Bitlocker enabled on Bootcamp - in either PowerShell or Setttings menu

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 07:24 PM PST

Jan 1, 2022

Happy New Year everyone! The cause of my issue seems straightforward: I enabled BitLocker on a MacBook Pro, early 2015 model which out-of-the-factory is only available with an Intel processor. That having been said - and someone, anyone can correct me if or when I'm wrong? - Bitlocker could not be implemented through the TPM, presumably because my Windows OS operates as the slave volume and alterations with the TPM are impossible given File Vault is installed on the MacOS partition. Or, alternately, neither of the partitions interact, beyond the Bootcamp Assistant.

I am unaware of whether or not the TPM comes factory installed on a MacBook Intel processor though, of course, the inverse is true for most modern if not all factory-shipped Windows machine. I am mentioning the TPM assuming that it's somehow involved with my inability to push updates - though this could be an irrelevant. Just a shot in the dark.

Either way, since installing BitLocker, if either by coincidence or cause, I have been unable to install the next available Windows update; I believe it's stuck back on a failed execution step in the process of an attempted upgrade to 20H2. I doubt the update version is relevant though. I have attempted the update using PowerShell, thinking it will offer a surefire method given it operates with more elevated privilege or system control, but PowerShell failed on the update as well. I have also attempted the update in Safe Mode, which also fails.

If logs are needed for proper analysis and a consequent solution, please advise which output is needed from the given log or logs and I will post it accordingly. I have little-to-no interest in removing BitLocker before an additional upgrade attempt. For that reason, any advice involving that step may not be the best here unless it's the one-and-only solution.

backup (copy) pictures and Files from an iPhone or iPad to a PC in a reasonable way

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 08:22 PM PST

There are two main things I want to copy, pictures in the photo library and .mp3 files saved by the (third party) Voice Recorder application. Here is what I've tried:

  • When I attach the phone to a PC, I get a DCIM folder with a bunch of subfolders, but nothing giving a clue to how the images are organized in albums, or even ordered by date. Further, I know there are complicated options about what is kept on the device and what is in iCloud. What I really want is a way to copy all of the pictures, whether on the phone or iCloud, to the PC. Does Apple try to make this difficult to lock you in to iCloud?

  • For the Voice Recorder .mp3 files, I can copy files from the application to the Files application in bulk, so that's good, but I don't know how to get them from Files to the PC in bulk. I tried various things but I only seem to be able to copy them one at a time. I tried using iZip but it failed, perhaps because the files are too large? The thing that seemed most promising was to add my Google Drive account as a "Location" in the Files app, and then drag all the recordings from the "On this iPad" location to the Google Drive location. But I waited hours and hours and it only seemed to copy one of the files out of the ~100 that were selected and dragged.

  • I found https://snapdrop.net/, which is cool, however again it only seems to let me copy one file at a time, which is not feasible. Again, I was thinking maybe I could zip the files, but iZip fails.

I don't mind paying a reasonable amount for a backup/copy app, if that's what it takes, but I wasn't able to tell from the descriptions of the apps I looked at that they would do what I need.

Note: I also did a full backup from the iPhone to my PC via iTunes. Unfortunately that creates a set of cryptically named files and folders. I'm assuming it's a proprietary format and there's no simple way to turn those into a regular directory of files?

Note: I was hoping to copy to a PC, but if copying to a MacBook is easier, that works also.

Only want to add "command" to cut and paste, not using xtrafinder

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:01 AM PST

I want to add cut command to right click menu in finder. Do not want to use xtrafinder at this time...catalina (sip)

  • defaults write com.apple.finder AllowCutForItems 1 =did not work
  • Would there exist an option of adding this specific functionality without disabling SIP. Solution exists, which means this is possible, but so far, these solutions require SIP disabled.

"Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation" Error when downloading Windows via USB boot [closed]

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:13 AM PST

(Past answers on this site do not work for me.)

Backstory: -From my previous post: I decide to suck it up and clean windows later and install Windows 10 x64bit from Microsft via Boot Camp. Apple... yet again failed me by getting the Windows Support Software installation stuck. Even after I decide to download it separately later and untick the download Windows Support Software. It still forced me to install it

-Which let me to the point where I am. I use Unetbootin to flash the Windows 10 iso to my USB and Partition the drive. Everything went smoothly so far until the Windows Installer came up. Everything installs fine at first until later on where it said the exact same error in my title right there. I tried everything on the internet including first aid, resetting PRAM and a myriad of other stuff but still, nothing works. I even delete the partition and start everything over with resetting SMC (Probably isn't even related), PRAM, deleted my previous partition,... etc. Still doesn't work. I'm pretty damn frustrated from this. Can anyone help me on what to do next? Thanks. diskutil list output: Diskutil list

P/s: I'm running a 2012 non retina 15' MBP with 120gb ssd and 800gb Hard disk on macOS Mojave 1.14.4. Data on each drive are incredibly important to me (If I delete them, someone's getting my head). So please refrain from advising me to reinstall macOS. Massive thanks.

Why isn't brew symbolically linking lld into /usr/local/bin when it installs llvm?

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 01:10 AM PST

I have installed llvm with brew install llvm and it shows up as installed with brew list.

% brew list ... llvm ... % brew --prefix /usr/local % brew --version Homebrew 3.3.9 ...

The lld binary (with various symbolic aliases) shows up in Cellar. For example, ld.lld is a symbolic link back to lld:

% ls -l /usr/local/Cellar/llvm/13.0.0_2/bin/ld.lld  lrwxr-xr-x  1 chris  admin  3 Sep 24 09:18 /usr/local/Cellar/llvm/13.0.0_2/bin/ld.lld@ -> lld

When I run the ld.lld binary it says:

% /usr/local/Cellar/llvm/13.0.0_2/bin/ld.lld --version Homebrew LLD 13.0.0 (compatible with GNU linkers)

However, lld or ld.lld isn't being linked into /usr/local/bin or anywhere standard that I could find.

% ls /usr/local/bin/lld ls: /usr/local/bin/lld: No such file or directory % ls /usr/local/bin/ld.lld ls: /usr/local/bin/ld.lld: No such file or directory

I don't want to put a long brittle link to ld.lld in a script. Any idea why it's not getting linked into a standard location?

Install custom Windows 10 iso via Boot Camp

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 10:10 PM PST

I am running a non-retina 15' 2012 Macbook Pro with Mojave 1.14.4. I had some apps for work that I can only run on Windows but I am not willing to download the full Windows 10 with all the bloatwares that it has. So I found some reputable custom Windows 10 Lite iso files in hope of having a lighter version of Windows I could use without worrying about Windows update or all its bloatware. Though, Boot Camp Assistant rejected installing the file with this popup: .

The iso I'm trying to install is a 64bit iso as well and with some digging, I found that Boot Camp only allows installation of official Windows 10 iso files downloaded straight from Microsoft. Is there a way I could bypass this pop-up altogether and proceed with my installation? Or if there are any Windows 10 iso that works will be great. Worst case scenario I guess I will have to install the full Windows 10 iso. Thanks in advance.

Weird behavior of progress bar in homebrew

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 01:23 AM PST

When I try to install cask/formulae in Homebrew, the progress bar is displayed for several lines instead of one line (you can see in the image).

I've tested with some different casks/formulaes but it still the same.

brew doctor gives no error.

May I ask is there any way to fix this?

Various model number styles of MacbookPro

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 10:29 PM PST

On the bottom of my MacbookPro the model number is A1707. But when I go to system report via the apple menu, it lists the model identifier as MacBookPro13,3. Are these just synonyms for the same thing? Or do they signify some different aspects of the equipment.

More importantly, which one should I use to search replacement parts for my laptop?

Does anyone know of software that can set a mac's resolution to only part of the screen?

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 10:32 PM PST

My macbook got knocked off the table ~6 months ago and landed on its corner and dented. A few days ago about 30 rows of pixels on that same side went dead.

It's not enough for me to want to rush out and get it fixed, but I'm wondering if I can somehow just turn those pixels off

Homebrew casks are not updating, how can I fix this?

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:05 AM PST

System Software Overview: System Version: macOS 12.0.1 (21A559) Kernel Version: Darwin 21.1.0

I am a newbie on MacOS. Most of the time I use Linux and tend to keep my software fresh and updated. On Linux it is quite easy - you run a simple command (apt update && apt upgrade for example) and it updates everything possible, include the kernel itself!

I want something similar for MacOS. I have installed homebrew package manager and with its help I have installed my favorite programs.

$ brew --version  Homebrew 3.3.7-22-g5fb34c8  Homebrew/homebrew-core (git revision 3dedb040d32; last commit 2021-12-09)  Homebrew/homebrew-cask (git revision dc3c9f0e1e; last commit 2021-12-09)  $ brew list  ==> Formulae  ant@1.9         curl            graphite2       libde265        libtiff         mbedtls           ...  php@7.3         theora    ==> Casks  1password       adoptopenjdk8       dbeaver-community   google-chrome       ngrok           slack           transmission        zoom  adoptopenjdk        alt-tab         docker          iterm2          phpstorm        telegram-desktop    visual-studio-code

Until this moment everything went just fine. I turned off "Automatically check for updates" setting for every single program, I have installed. I don't want update each program manually and don't want to know when new update has been released. All I want - once a week do whole system update and that is it.

In a few weeks I decided to do such system update. I found many formulas which has higher version than I had installed:

$ brew info --cask phpstorm  phpstorm: 2021.3,213.5744.279 (auto_updates)  https://www.jetbrains.com/phpstorm/  /usr/local/Caskroom/phpstorm/2020.3.3 (122B)  From: https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask/blob/HEAD/Casks/phpstorm.rb  ==> Name  JetBrains PhpStorm  ==> Description  PHP IDE by JetBrains  ==> Artifacts  PhpStorm.app (App)  ==> Analytics  install: 645 (30 days), 1,785 (90 days), 6,826 (365 days)  $ brew info --cask alt-tab  alt-tab: 6.29.0 (auto_updates)  https://github.com/lwouis/alt-tab-macos  /usr/local/Caskroom/alt-tab/6.26.0 (120B)  From: https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask/blob/HEAD/Casks/alt-tab.rb  ==> Name  AltTab  ==> Description  Enable Windows-like alt-tab  ==> Artifacts  AltTab.app (App)  ==> Analytics  install: 2,595 (30 days), 5,972 (90 days), 17,086 (365 days)

So, let's update them:

$ brew update Updated 3 taps (homebrew/cask-versions, homebrew/core and homebrew/cask). ==> Updated Formulae snakemake ==> Updated Casks bitwarden subsync syncovery tableau-public tandem taskade teamviewermeeting textbar propresenter-beta sweet-home3d tabby tableau-reader tap-forms td-agent telavox-flow $ brew update --cask Already up-to-date. $ brew upgrade --cask $ brew upgrade

Nothing happened...

Filemaker How to Import into related tables

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 11:03 PM PST

I recently purchased FileMaker Pro and created a new database with the "Contact" template. I have a CSV file with Names, addresses and phone numbers. When I choose import, the dialog only allows me to import fields that go into the 'Contacts' table. How do I get the address and phone number into the related address and phone tables? I read in the support docs that you can only import into 1 table at a time, but provides no details on how to choose the related table.

I have a windows pc so i was looking for a usb to lightning connector on apple's website. It's kinda expensive . Can I use a duplicate usb to lightning connector for the same? Most importantly, would my device be recognised by iTunes?

How do I adjust the screen area for external monitors?

I don't know the exact wording for this. But basically my external monitor is too big for a certain game. Now I want the visible screen area to be smaller so that the game doesn't fill out the whole monitor. I want it smaller with a black border. Is that possible? Thank you!

iPhone 6s refuses to boot after screen removal

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 09:06 PM PST

Have a set of phone repair tools. After removing the iPhone 6s screen (carefully, teasing the ribbons off), and replacing with apple parts, there was an issue turning the phone on even after a hard reset and firmware update. Took the phone to a Genius Bar appointment, and the power test (using a MacBook Air) failed. Three questions:

  1. Does removing the screen improperly place a software lock on the iPhone 6s boot?
  2. Would this have been caused by the new iOS update?
  3. If neither of these, what might cause a screen removal to prevent an iPhone 6s boot?

How to disable autocorrect for correctly spelled words?

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:02 AM PST

Is there a way to stop autocorrect from altering words that I spell correctly? While still keeping autocorrect on for incorrectly spelled words.

I have tried turning off Autocorrect in Settings > General > Keyboards; but this disables autocorrect completely. The words still pop up above the keyboard but it no longer autocorrects just by typing.

It can be quite frustrating to have iOS randomly change your sentence to something that doesn't make sense because it thinks the grammar might be wrong or it's trying to second guess what you're typing, when I've typed something completely valid.

Adding endless lists of words that iOS constantly wants to "correct" into the Keyboard Text Replacement option is not a solution in my opinion. The list of correctly spelled words that iOS likes to alter is vast. Also I already use the Keyboard Text Replacement feature extensively so I don't want my own list polluting with this nonsense.

Surely there is a way to not autocorrect correctly spelled words?

If not is there any app or Shortcut that bypasses this somehow?

Some examples off the top of my head, but there's plenty more stupid stuff it does:

I will do it today > I Will do it today

(it thinks I mean a person called Will)

Bus stop > Bud stop

(who knows!)

St Albans > At Albans

(a city near London)

I've ticked off the ones that are done > I've ticket off the ones that are done

(✅ vs 🎟)

Let's see if they say yes > Let's see of they say yes

(Totally wrong)

Is it "learning" these somehow? It seems to go through phases of changing certain words for a while until I correct it enough times.

Here are some different examples. I have 2 keyboards installed - English and Dutch. With the English keyboard selected, it does this:

www.test.co.uk > www.test.co.Ik

(meaning "I" in Dutch)

We are sat in the back > We are dat in the back

(meaning "that" in Dutch)

He said yes > Hé said yes

(meaning "huh?" in Dutch)

I must say, since switching from Android to iOS, I prefer it; but the keyboard is absolutely awful in comparison!

How can I copy all of my iPhone Voice Message on my MacBook?

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 12:35 AM PST

I have many recordings of birds as Voice Memos on my iPhone 6 with iOS 12.4.5 and I am trying to synch to my new MacBook macOS 10.15.6 using iTunes (which is now called Music?)

If I connect my iPhone to my new laptop then click the iPhone icon in Music it shows me an alphabetical list of about half or less of the Voice Memos that are on my phone. The list is alphabetical so I can't check the most recent recording date.

I have synched, but when I disconnect my phone the list disappears and I can not find Voice Memos on my laptop anywhere.

If I look on my hard drive under Music I don't see anything useful.

Question: How can I copy all of my iPhone Voice Message on my MacBook?

note: I don't use my phone for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts or audio books. I just want to get the voice memos as audio files into a folder on my laptop.

iMac 2011 Graphics Card issue - Unresolved

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 08:05 PM PST

I have a weird issue with my iMac 2011 model. This is the iMac with the graphic card issue, so it happened to me as well.

I tried everything except baking the graphics card, this is my absolute last resort. What I've done now is I installed Windows on the iMac, and guess what it works perfect, please don't judge but this was only for testing.

So now, why is it that Windows works but not OSX?

Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is? Please do let me know.

Much appreciated.

How can I switch between language input sources using Alt-Shift on Catalina? [duplicate]

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:22 AM PST

I tried a couple of Karabiner scripts available online, but none is working.

Also, it looks like there is some confusion about what is Alt on mac keyboards. Although semantically, this is the key, key is positioned where Alt is on Windows keyboards.

So I would rephrase the question:

-- How can I switch between language input sources using +Shift on Catalina?

Adding login items from terminal in Catalina

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 02:02 AM PST

I've tried multiple ways but none work. A few AppleScripts and even some bash script somebody made. Which essentially just executes a different AppleScript afaik.

Some of the commands I have tried:

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to make new login item at end with properties {path:"/Applications/AppName.app", name:"App Name", hidden:true}' defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary -array-add '{Path="/Applications/AppName.app";}' defaults write loginwindow AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary -array-add '{ "Name" = "AppName" ; "Path" = "/Applications/AppName.app"; "Hide" = 0; }' defaults write loginwindow AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary -array-add '<dict><key>Hide</key><false/><key>Path</key><string>/path/to/item</string></dict>'

Does Apple Watch automatically stop walk/run workout?

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 07:44 PM PST

One problem I commonly have with activity and workout trackers is that I forget to stop recording when I finish my walk or run, and end up including a bus ride or drive as part of the workout. This skews the data and mostly makes it useless for tracking.

And furthermore, most trackers don't make it easy to trim or crop an activity after it has been completed.

Does the Apple Watch automatically stop recording a walk or run workout when it detects you're moving faster than a human could possibly run?

Native way to speed up/remove desktop switching animations

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 03:01 AM PST

I want a native (and therefore free) way to speed up a specific animation. My research covers these questions and links on this that have gone unsolved for High Sierra and no answers there cover this natively.

What used to work, defaults write com.apple.dock expose-animation-duration -float 0.1 does not work, and has been confirmed to not work by myself (as well as many of the above comments and posts).

People tend to get referred here, which only offers a paid program as a solution. I have searched and searched for a free solution, none found. Any hints, help, open source mission control replacements, anything? This thing is slow enough my workflow is getting hampered (I'll switch back and fourth a lot comparing data).

I'm really hopeful for some guru who can figure this out. How can we implement this for free?
