Get firefox on iOS, in desktop mode, to open links as if on a desktop? (and not open in another iOS app)

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 10:40 PM PDT

I'm using firefox on iOS in 'request Desktop Site' mode. I'd like to open a link, just like I'm on a desktop. Here's, it's a google sheet, and it keeps trying to launch the google sheets app.

That, in turn, wants me to log in, and don't want to do that, given the it's a shared device.

Is there some way to get firefox in 'Desktop Site model' to actually operate like it's on a desktop?

How to change the playback speed of videos on iPhone?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:47 PM PDT

Sometimes it would be nice to not be limited to 1x speed on videos stored in the camera roll of an iOS device, like iPhone.

Is there any simple way of toggling the speed, to say 2x or 3x?

Unable to install printer driver for HP1606DN printer on Big Sur

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 05:02 PM PDT

I have tried to configure the HP1606DN printer via IP address, direct driver download, EasySetup, and HP Smart: none have worked.

For newer printers my preference for installation is to connect via IP address and then hopefully the printer will download the drivers properly. For the HP1606DN I believe that were the case in the past: but it is not working now because only Generic PostScript or an incompatible HP printer type are available.

So I have downloaded the HP driver from https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-p1606-printer-series/4110408/model/4110409

enter image description here

[![enter image description here][2]][2]

I installed EasySetup 2 and then connected by USB (I'd prefer to do ethernet but apparently we need a physical connection ??) It asks me to install yet another program HP Smart. This is obviously troubling - since too many programs mean too many chances for the programs to fail or get confused.

Then the HP Smart setup program still does not recognize the printer - it hangs here:

enter image description here

And it can't find the (correctly attached) USB

enter image description here

Note that I had previously tried using drivers directly: HPPrinterDrivers5.1.dmg

This volume does not meet the requirements for this update

I am at a loss to how to get this (relatively recent!) printer to work with _macOS Big Sur. Has anyone succeeded?

How do I turn off security warnings on Safari/Mac 10.10 Yosemite?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:58 PM PDT

I'm running Safari 10.1.2 (OS X Yosemite most updated). Upgrading OS is not an option. An answer which says only that is not an answer to this question.

I surf a lot of web sites merely informationally. I'm not handling financial information or even logging into the site, I'm just literally browsing (e.g. a "brochure" website that only has public info).

"HTTP" is perfectly appropriate for this browsing.

I'm often getting "trapped". Safari refuses to use "HTTP" because "HTTPS" exists. However, there are issues with the website's certificate or other security glitches, where the Safari balks and says

Cannot open the page httpS://www.example.com because Safari cannot establish a secure connection to the server "www.example.com".

The HTTP connection would have been fine.

In the last week the number of such sites has increased exponentially. (including StackExchange). And in most cases, Chrome 87.0.4280.88 won't read the sites either, and says the site is not secure to provide my precious financial information, and so will not give me any path to browse it. Again, not doing anything financial.

Is there a setting to tell Safari "don't worry about the security" or "just use HTTP"? I hate to turn it off altogether but that's an option.

Upgrading an OS is not an option as that will break MS-Office. (MS turned off the authentication servers so re-installs won't validate).

iPhone says it's activated but no connection

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:56 PM PDT

I have been using my iPhone 10 for 3 years, and suddenly today, it keeps saying "iPhone is activated" and my cellular connection disappeared.

I only can connect to Wi-Fi.

How can I fix it?

MacBook Pro (A1990) dead - How to diagnose if battery or mainboard issue?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 11:39 AM PDT

Hi everyone & thanks for your help in advance!

My MacBook Pro (A1990) won't start (no reaction at all) after I haven't used it for a couple of weeks.

Is there any possibility to check via multimeter or other tools if the reason is the battery (repairable) or the motherboard (financially not reasonable to repair)?

Things I have tried to narrow down the cause of error to either battery or motherboard:

I tried all the keyboard combinations for different types of reset. I also tried different chargers.

Open it up and disconnected & reconnected the battery (one „block" looks a little bloated").

Also bought a USB-C diagnosis tool and it doesn't charge at all (no current, voltage ok), no matter which port is connected (and same thing when I had the battery disconnected).

Thanks a again and looking forward to your replies :)

Q: How to configure Contacts.app with Google Contacts so that labels show up as contact groups?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 11:01 AM PDT

I'm trying to get the Contacts app on MacOS Big Sur to display my Google contacts correctly. I have the account configured and the contacts themselves show up, but the Google contact tags (what Google calls "labels" and Apple calls "groups") aren't showing up.

Further, if I add a new contact group in the Contacts app under "Google" and use it to group several contacts, they seem to be stored locally (they are there after I reboot) but don't get pushed up to Google.

Any suggestions how to debug this further?

Unable To Partition Internal SSD, Trying To Dual Boot with Linux

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:37 AM PDT

I am running macOS Big Sur 11.5.2 and I am trying to partition my internal hard drive so I can Dual-Boot PopOS, which is a linux distro. However, I am having problems with partitioning my internal ssd.

Disk Utility says my internal hard drive can't be split. I have cleared my hard drive to have about 55 gb free and I will be clearing it further.

System Information shows this:

enter image description here

53.97 GB available of 121.12 GB

Disk Utility Shows This:

enter image description here

This container has 107.88 GB used space. Its minimum size is 121.12 GB. This container can't be split, because the resulting containers would be too small.

It also has all the add, minus, and partition buttons disabled. I have tried recovery mode, but it shows the same thing. I need macOS for XCode and the Adobe Suite as they are not available on linux.

Sorry If I did something wrong, this is my first question on stack exchange.

@Jean_JD asked me to include the output of disk util list internal

How to rearranges collapsed/pinned tabs in Safari?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 06:43 AM PDT

I am using Safari Version 15.0, macOS Big Sur Version 11.6.

In Safari, on the left top side I can see the collapsed/pinned tabs, example:

enter image description here

In the previos Safari version, when I clicked one of the collapsed/pinned tabs, I was able to carry it into a new location. But now when I click them automatically Safari attempts to open them on a new window and I am unable to change their place.

How can I rearrenge collapsed/pinned tabs?

Macbook Pro automatically boots with closed lid

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 10:37 AM PDT

I have a Macbook Pro 16" 2019 that automatically boots after I shut it down.

When I shutdown the macbook as per usual (Apple Icon > Shut Down), and close the lid, it will boot up automatically, because I hear the boot sound. It typically happens when I pick it up, or pick up my backpack and it's inside.

I have tried forcing it off (pressing and holding the fingerprint reader), but it has no effect, it also boots automatically.

I have found MacBook Air Starts up when I close the lid and tried the solutions proposed there, but none of them worked.

The things I checked are ensuring the power nap feature is off, removing any applications that might have launchd installed (only opengpg), and reinstalling this machine.

One of my hypotheses is that when you pick up the device the touchpad registers movement and boots based off of that, but then this must be a hardware malfunction because nobody else at work has the issue.

I completely wiped the macbook and installed a vanilla version of Mac OSX.

Here is the output of pmset -g log > ~/beforeshutdown.log. Full log here: https://exbin.call-cc.be/r/BepaintWaitresses

MFI certification/ Detecting local wifi networks

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I am re-posting my previous question in regards to enabling our app to detect local wifi networks so that users can connect the product to wifi.

My company is developing an app enabled sound machine. The sound machine similar to many other products today like security cameras, computers, iPhones, even some air purifiers, takes you through a set up process through the app where you can then connect the device to a Wi-Fi network.

Typically of course this Wi-Fi network that you connect to will be the Wi-Fi network in your home, or office, or wherever you will be keeping this product. When you are going through the app and get to the portion where you then connect the product to Wi-Fi all of the Wi-Fi network names in the area will pop up. So for example, if you live in apartment building your Wi-Fi network name will pop up along with maybe three or four of your neighbors.

Now this is the screen we are having a challenge with. You can manually type in your Wi-Fi network name and password and it will connect with no issues. But we are unable to get the app to detect the Wi-Fi network names in the area. This creates a massive inconvenience for users because at that point they have to type in both their WiFi network name and the password manually. They are unable to just click on their Wi-Fi network name then enter the password like other apps.

We have been reaching out to Apple development program but for some reason they have been denying us the ability to do this. We are Wondering if that is because of not having an MFI certification. Or if there is a different implementation that we are not considering.

Save/Don't Save Menus No Longer Respond to Tab and Spacebar (post Big Sur)

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:02 PM PDT

Prior to Big Sur (OS 11.1), I could use tab to move between the options (buttons) in the type of pop-up menu shown in the image, and spacebar to select an option. For example, in the menu here I could a) press spacebar and have this email 'Save' and b) use tab to transition the highlighted option to 'Don't Save'.

Now, neither of these work, which I don't like bcs. I prefer to use the keyboard. I can't seem to find an option to reenable them (or work around the issue). Any ideas?

Partially redeem Apple Gift Card on App Store

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:06 AM PDT

After using £200 of the value of my Apple Gift Card in the apple retail outlet(physical shop), I now have a balance of £500 of which I'd like to put £100 of that towards my App Store credits so I can buy iCloud storage, apps, etc. Here are my questions:

  1. In the dialog to redeem a gift card on the app store I'm not sure if I can partially redeem just £100. Is this possible? I'm wary of going forward with this in case all £500 is redeemed to the app store, which would be needless.

  2. Is it possible to buy iCloud storage using balance from a Gift Card?

MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017) [MacOs Catalina 10.15.6] Yellow tint when watching video in Netflix, Youtube or even Videos(Quick Time)

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:00 PM PDT

I noticed recently that when i try watching youtube videos in full screen, when i didn't move my mouse and the play bar disappeared , my screen turn yellowish. This happen only during full screen and only if i connect my MacBook Air with an external monitor via thunderbolt (I connect monitor with HDMI through a converter [HDMItoThunderbolt].

If i unplug the monitor from my MacBook, it becomes normal.

Any solution for this? I reach help from apple support but they seems can't fixed this issue.

The "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notification will not go away on Mojave?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 05:37 AM PDT

If I forgot to plug in my Mac to the power and came back a couple of hours later, it may show "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notifications (two of them on Mojave).

But the notification display a "Show" and clicking on it has no effect. Clicking on the notification has no effect. So these two notifications are blocking all the view of other window content because they always stay on top of every other window. (they are blocking the tabs of Google Chrome)

How can they be removed? Or else I have to close most everything and restart the Mac, which is a pain just due to this bug.

How can I fix my iPad Magic Keyboard when everything works except the trackpad?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 09:11 AM PDT

I've got the Magic Keyboard (the one with the hinge that holds the iPad Pro suspended in air above the number keys) and everything works except the trackpad. I can go into the settings app General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard and the brightness reacts when I slide the control.

What can be done to fix this so the trackpad works?

Crontab Operation not permitted

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:38 AM PDT

I have the following crontab on my mac OS Catalina 10.15.1 :

* * * * * /Users/username/Desktop/cronjob.sh > /Users/username/Desktop/cronjob.log 2>&1

Within the command file is:

#!/bin/bash    touch /tmp/foo

However I was left with the following line inside cronjob.log

/bin/bash: /Users/username/Desktop/cronjob.sh: Operation not permitted

Why is operation not permitted event though the permissions for cronjob.sh is set to +x?

Why does macOS 10.13 suddenly asks for a PIN instead of password for login?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 05:58 AM PDT

When I have to enter my credentials, my Mac, which runs with macOS 10.13 High Sierra, asks for a PIN instead of my password.

This has happened several times within the last months. The only solution I have is to force a shutdown (by pressing the power button) and restart. With this procedure, my MacBook asks for my password again.

It's all confusing. I have never setup a PIN. Note: It is not the screen I would get if I lock my MacBook through Find my Mac.

Unfortunately, the only search results with PIN and Macbook is related to Find my Mac... I hope someone can help me by referring to the screenshot above.

What is this PIN and why is macOS asking for it? How can I prevent macOS from asking for a PIN?

How do I move a window so that its title bar is above the visible screen area?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:38 PM PDT

How can I drag/move a window so that its top is above the screen?

I want to be able to resize a window taller vertically than the screen itself, and then take a picture of the window, but I don't care about getting the window's title bar in the picture, only the content of the window, which is actually smaller than the screen but cannot all be viewed at once because of the title bar making the window's size too large.

Regular Kernel Panics 10.11.3: com.apple.nke.applicationfirewall

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:08 PM PDT

I am experiencing new regular kernel panics on a Mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro. I'm not using any new 3rd party software and the hardware setup hasn't changed. I tried uninstalling iShowU Audio Capture from Shinywhitebox.com. I had another panic, only this time, there was no log, so I reinstalled it.

In each case, the "kernel extensions in backtrace" is "com.apple.nke.applicationfirewall(163.0)". Last loaded and unloaded kexts have always been "com.apple.driver.AppleXsanScheme". Could anyone who understand panic reports help me to shed light on this issue? Thanks for reading.

How do I clear All OS X notifications with 1 click?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 07:09 PM PDT

I have notifications in the OSX Notification Center, as for most of my apps I am using the setting, "Show in Notification Centre: 10 Recent Items" This is a good setting but rather than have a very full Notification Center, I would still like to clear it from time to time with 1 click.

I am using Yosemite 10.10.3

2006 MacPro - Worth upgrading for use as a VM host?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 05:18 AM PDT

I have a MacPro 1,1 bought in early 2007. Earlier this year I was about to recycle it but tried installing an SSD as a boot/apps drive. It has been a great success, it now feels like a new machine and I'm contemplating souping it up to 16GB of RAM and using it to run Windows VMs (I'm a .Net developer) in Parallels Desktop or VMWare or similar.

The RAM is going to cost < $50. I was wondering if this is a good idea in 2014 or if I'm going to hit a load of constraints imposed by the age of the hardware. Any comments or observations very gratefully received. I cannot and will not pay thousands for a new MacPro.

Changing Airdrop Folder

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 06:55 PM PDT

I have changed the location of many other applications to save files to a custom folder instead of ~/Downloads.

Is there a way to change the default Airdrop location from the Downloads folder to something else?
