Does certain Fn key like F11 does not work for services which are linked to automator?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 09:48 PM PDT

So I did a small automator to toggle wifi on/off. I put that in services so I can assign a shortcut in keyboard in system preference.

I can assign F12, F10 all seems good but when I assign F11, when I press F11 it does not do anything but give me a error sound... However assign F11 to other non-service like mission control totally works... Wondering if F11 or other Fkeys have certain program or what's the logic behind this?

recovering data from an imac 2017 with mojave that won't boot

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 11:20 PM PDT

imac 2017 mojave suddenly got stuck at boot screen. apple logo with boot progress bar reaches to 100% but then gets stuck there and computer never actually boots.

I need to recover some data before I actually go ahead and reinstall the OS completely.

primary data that I need to extract is the bookmarks and passwords from the chrome browser.

booting in recovery mode is successful.

I do have access to another mac to clone (if that is even possible).

Q1: [primary objective] can I connect two macs, boot the problem machine in target disk mode, and then clone the OS disk completely to the a disk in the healthy mac, and then boot the healthy mac from that cloned OS?

Q2: [alternate] if nothing else works, how can I extract only chrome browser data and get passwords + bookmarks extracted from that data?

Is it possible to display unread iMessage count in the menu bar on macOS 11+

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 05:20 PM PDT

I'm aware that this used to be possible at one point or another, but I'm trying to find a solution specifically for Big Sur and up. I've recently decided to automatically hide my dock which unfortunately leads to forgetting that I've received text messages until hours later unless I open and respond to them immediately.

Is it possible, either within the system or through third-party software, to add an icon to the menu bar that indicates that there are unread messages in the stock Messages.app?

Is Linux really installable on the M1 Macs yet or is it all hype? [closed]

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 02:52 PM PDT

I've seen a great deal of what appears to be hype surrounding the topic of running Linux on an M1 Mac. I wonder, what is the cold honest truth, without the "trust me, I'm lying" clickbaity articles from bloggers?

How do I construct a terminal process that displays lines as they are added to a log file? [duplicate]

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 03:45 PM PDT

I'm needed to monitor a log file while I'm doing some debugging. The script I'm debugging writes to the terminal (STDIO) so having debugging info mixed in with that is annoying and I miss things.

What I would like to do is write my debugging info to a log file, simply appending each entry, and have a separate terminal window that is monitoring that file and displaying each entry as it is added.

Could I do something like:

echo << "=-EOF-="

where that somehow reads from the file and echoes each line until it encounters the magic termination string?

I have a feeling that this is possible, but I don't really know where to begin.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Can't connect to the Internet via Ethernet (Wifi and VPN/Ethernet works)

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 01:50 PM PDT

I have a M1 Mac Mini running Big Sur (11.5.2). Had it for 30 days or so and have been accessing the internet via Ethernet since day one without problems - until a couple of days ago. After waking the computer from sleeping suddenly I wasn't able to access the internet anymore (for the most part - read below). I switched to WiFi and it started working again. Thought it may be the cable so I tried a different cable to no avail. Tried the original cable with my MBP (via Thunderbolt 2 dongle) and that worked fine as well. I power cycled my router, which did not help. So it's not the cable, switch or router.

Turned off WiFi and plugged the Ethernet cable back in and turned on VPN (ExpressVPN). Internet works! So WiFi and Ethernet on VPN work fine, but Ethernet on it's own doesn't.

Back to the problem itself which is strange. On a handful of sites, the internet does work on Ethernet. Best Buy, DuckDuckGo (gets search results, but can't navigate to any of the links), Pocket, Goodreads, Amazon (partially loads - probably from cache) seem to work okay. But most other sites just don't - Google Sites, Wikipedia, Weather.com, etc.

The problem is not isolated to browsing. I opened Spotify and the Apple Podcasts app and they couldn't connect to the internet either when using plain Ethernet.

I tried a few other things individually that didn't help:

  • Created a new user
  • Started the Mac in Safe Mode
  • Did a fresh reinstall of MacOS
  • Via Network Preferences, Renewed the DHCP Lease
  • Via Network Preferences, Removed and re-added the Ethernet adapter
  • Via Network Preferences, Created a new Location (instead of "Automatic") and tried the Ethernet adapter
  • Connected Ethernet to the computer via a USB-C dongle to the Thunderbolt Port
  • Changed the default DNS to Google's DNS servers (8.8.8.8)

Does anyone know what might be the problem here?

(Edited to add other things I tried)

How do make Cmd + S files save to the file I opened with numbers with its existing format/extension?

I usually open .XLSX files with Numbers for quick edit.

However doing Cmd + S makes Numbers prompt to save the file with .numbers extension. How do I override this behavior?

File extension association to LibreOffice calc in macOS

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 01:14 PM PDT

I'm using macOS Big Sur 11.5.2 and LibreOffice 7.2.0.4.

I want to associate a file extension (unknown to LibreOffice, eg ".myfileExtension") to a specific LibreOffice program.

In my particular case it's Calc. However, when I do the regular process to associate a file extension to a program using Open With in Finder, the only option is "LibreOffice" (not Calc in particular). If I set LibreOffice as the default program for that extension, LibreOffice opens the file with Writer.

I do not want to change the file extension to some extension already associated with Calc (like, guessing, ".tsv") because I have lots of this files and I am constantly generating new ones.

So, the question is: How do I get to associate a particular file extension with a particular LibreOffice program (Calc)?

MacOS does not reconnect on 5Ghz when DFS kicks in

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 02:17 PM PDT

My wireless router (Fritzbox 6591) occasionally has to disable some 5Ghz channels because of DFS (dynamic frequency selection and we're quite close to an airport) priorities. Unfortunately, it seems that my MBP fails to respond correctly and simply drops the connection and does not reconnect: this isn't temporary but will persist until a connection is manually reestablished. Is there anyway around this apart from selecting channels which are not covered by DFS?

We have about 10 devices on the network and it is only the Macs that suffer from the problem.

How to change settings for Fn keys on Magic Keyboard when used with MacBook Air?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 04:41 PM PDT

I use a Magic Keyboard with my MacBook on a stand. The Fn keys on the Magic Keyboard only use as standard F1, F2... keys don't work as controls, i.e. I can't use them to adjust volume or screen brightness. Esc key and lock keys work fine.

In standard keyboard settings, this requires unticking the "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" but my settings only adjust the built-in MacBook's keyboard not the connected Magic Keyboard.

Unknown host only on my mac

Doing ping test.my-domain.com I have the same issue ping: cannot resolve test.my-domain.com: Unknown host

People from outside can access the website without issues. On the same network, I can access the website with my phone.

I tried to set google dns 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 but same issue

A also tried to connect through a vpn and same issue

I rebooted my mac many times, reset DNS cache and nothing change

I can access from everywhere but not on my mac, Today I tried to configure on the root domain my-domain.com, exact same issue everyone can see it but not working on my mac

iPhone - free up photo space for transfer to new phone

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:48 PM PDT

Sorry to have to add to the bajillion questions about freeing up space on an iPhone, but I can't seem to find one that addresses my particular need.

I just bought a new iPhone 12 Mini with 128Gb storage, and "oops", apparently my old iPhone 8 had 256Gb. No problem, I thought, it's only about half full anyway, I'll just delete stuff until I'm under whatever nebulous threshold it needs. There's always some cruft hanging around to delete, I figured.

Well, apparently the vast majority of space on my phone is taken up by photos:

(Note some oddities - "Photos" takes up 106Gb, but everything altogether takes up 44Gb; and the sizing bar shows distinctly more than 50% of storage used, despite being nominally 44Gb.)

If I go in and delete individual photos/movies from the Photos app, then they get removed from everywhere (I have iCloud sync turned on), so I don't want that. Not that I can identify particularly large photos/movies very easily anyway....

With iCloud sync turned on, it seems to do a decent job of keeping disk usage below the limits of my current device (presumably through offloading items to iCloud), but I need it to keep usage quite a bit less than that, so I can complete the transfer to my new phone. After that, presumably it will manage things properly on the new device.

Any suggestions?

Update

I thought I was working toward a solution, but now it seems to be stuck at a worse point. I disabled iCloud Photo sync, then (after waiting a while) my new phone seemed happy enough with the sizes to start transferring things over. But after it restarted itself and showed my icon screens again, it's refusing to download anything now, most apps are not downloaded yet. It sat in this state for a few hours, so I decided to restart the phone - now it's just sitting at the big startup Apple logo and won't start. Urgh.....

Update 2

I left the new phone to its own devices overnight, stuck in the bootup screen, and by morning it had indeed fully booted up.

Better way to access Safari website data on iOS?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 06:01 PM PDT

It is really irritating to have to one at a time delete hundreds of cookies/caches from websites I have never visited. (Would that Apple would allow us to block third-party cookies).

Is there an API that would allow me to build my own app in Xcode to handle it in a better way? Or something like Cookie 6 (macOS) for iOS? Or someone else's open source that I can compile?

I'm not willing to jailbreak, nor to install something with source code not vetted by me or Apple.

For example, clearing all website data and then logging in to Facebook.com adds five third-party cookies. Three of them are from domains owned by Facebook, but do not end in Facebook.com. The other two are obviously from advertising services.

enter image description here

This is why I use DuckDuckGo for almost everything, and Safari only occasionally. DuckDuckGo lets me clear everything after a session. I use Safari for a few domains where I'd like to keep their cookies only, but the cost of that is consumption of storage space that doesn't benefit me and prevents syncing all the music I'd like.

Can't see video files on memory card

Music app only shows an outdated music library after I've retrieved it from backup

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 04:02 PM PDT

I made a clean reinstallation of my Mac a few days ago due to a problem that had been bugging me for a while now. And, among other things, I tried to retrieve my music library from my backup via Time Machine back to the music app. It was the folder „iTunes".

To get all the settings back I've opened the file "iTunes Library.itl". But unfortunately, it seems to be completely outdated (it's from late 2019!) which also shows in the music app. There are only songs and playlists listed up to that date, even though the songs in the iTunes Media folder (or to be more specific, in username/music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music) are all up to date. I suspect that this happened because of the outdated .itl-file.

How can I get back the settings I've had a few days back with all my playlists and songs?

How do I change the text size of result displayed via Siri Shortcuts?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 02:02 PM PDT

If I ask Siri for e.g. the price of bitcoin, it shows a nicely formatted text like down below

enter image description here

With Shortcuts, I can display a dialog with arbitrary content, with the "Display Result" action. However, I have no control over the text formatting.

On an Apple Watch, this is especially bad, as the font size is very small, even when the text is short. I can increase the default font size of the Watch, but then all of the text will be bigger anywhere else, even when the content to display is longer, which is not what I want.

Is there any way to manipulate the text formatting -- or at least the font size -- of Siri Shortcuts output?

Increasing the size of all content

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:07 PM PDT

I'm looking for something that works like "display size" on Android, "change the size of text, apps, and other items" on Windows or "zoom level" on Linux Mint.

"Text size" doesn't cut it because it leaves a lot of things unscaled and accessibility zoom - well, I'm sure it's nice for severely impaired people but I just want to scale up everything by something like 25 to 50% without having to need to pan around.

Is there a way for the host of a Zoom meeting running the Zoom app on a Mac to admit everyone from the waiting room via keyboard not mouse?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 11:01 PM PDT

If I am the host of a Zoom meeting and people arrive at the meeting late and I want to admit them to the meeting without interrupting the flow of my presentation, is there any way to "Admit all from Waiting Room" from the keyboard? This is further complicated by the fact that if only one person is in the waiting room, there is no "Admit all" option.

Things I've unsuccessfully tried:

  • There is no pre-defined keyboard shortcut for admitting people from the waiting room
  • There is no menu item in Zoom to admit from waiting room, so I can't assign a keyboard shortcut in System Preferences
  • The "Admit all" button doesn't appear in the same place on the screen depending on how many people are in the waiting room, so it looks like simulating a mouse click at particular coordinates wouldn't work.

I don't know if there is a path forward with UI Scripting through AppleScript, or if I'm overlooking a simulated mouse click solution, or if there's something else I'm not thinking of, but I'd love to be able to admit latecomers to a zoom meeting from the keyboard.

Mid 2009 MacBook pro cannot download osx

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 09:03 PM PDT

I have a mid-2009 MacBook pro in which I replaced the HD with SSHD a few years ago. It was updated to El Capitan and runs fine. Now I want to get it ready to sell. I have successfully erased the SSHD but cannot get OS X of any version to download. I have tried the original OS X CD, snow leopard CD, internet downloads, all to no success. When running from the disk drive it will start through the process and stall out. Via internet it also starts through the process and stops, I get a message that it could not be installed and "no packages are eligible for install" I can restore it via time machine and have done so and restarted the process per Apple instructions but cannot get it to work. Help.

External keyboard Logitech Slim Folio Pro not always allow me to type text on iPadOS 14.2

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 05:01 PM PDT

Sometimes I am unable to type text into text field in the apps on iPadOS 14.2 (the same behaviour I encountered before on previous versions of the iPadOS).

Sometimes this also happening for "Spotlight" but this is rarer than for the apps.

I could use function keys in that moment so this is not an issue with connectivity. This is probable some "feature" of Apple system. How I could avoid this problem? I use Logitech Slim Folio Pro (Bluetooth keyboard & cover)

How to automatically mount network share when iPhone backup screen is opened in Finder?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 03:02 PM PDT

I would like to trigger a script that mounts a drive when I open the iPhone's device page in Finder (like shown here).

enter image description here

Currently, I have the iPhone backups in an APFS volume, which is inside a SparseBundle, which is on a SMB share on my NAS.
Before running an iPhone backup, I mount the drive by manually running a shell script.

Since I work on a MacBook the LAN with my NAS is not always available, hence the detour with mounting manually. But triggering the mount process automatically when entering the page in finder seems a good idea.

  • Is there any event fired to attach such a script to?
  • Or maybe there is any other sensible method to mount the drive automatically?

macOS: Can't mount exFAT External Drive

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 09:55 PM PDT

I have a Western Digital MyBook (25EE) 8TB External Drive. It is formatted with exFAT. I can't recall exactly how it was formatted, but I believe it was done with Synology's DiskStation for my Synology NAS. I am able to mount and read the drive when I connect it to the NAS, but not on macOS Sierra 10.12.6.

The drive shows up in Disk Utility, but mounting does nothing. I have run "First Aid" with no errors.

enter image description here enter image description here

Disk Utility incorrectly thinks that the usage is 8/8 TB. As can be seen in the screenshot below, usage is around 4.2/8 TB. The drive mainly contains a Synology HyperBackup file (.hbk) which makes up almost single-handedly all of those 4.2 TB.

According to Synology DiskStation, the main partition is exFAT and I think the EFI partition is vfat:

enter image description here

The drive also shows up in diskutil as disk2s2 but I can't mount it:

/dev/disk2 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *8.0 TB disk2 1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk2s1 2: Microsoft Basic Data WD My Book 8.0 TB disk2s2 $ mount disk2s2 mount: disk2s2: unknown special file or file system. $ diskutil mountDisk disk2 One or more volume(s) failed to mount

NB: (I tried following these instructions for FUSE for macOS, but I suppose they're not really relevant since exFAT should be supported natively in macOS these days.)

I don't have the faintest idea where to start on this issue – what could be the problem here?

Edit 1: Block Sizes

macOS:

$ diskutil info disk2 | grep "Block Size" Device Block Size: 512 Bytes $ diskutil info disk2s1 | grep "Block Size" Device Block Size: 512 Bytes $ diskutil info disk2s2 | grep "Block Size" Device Block Size: 512 Bytes

Synology SSH:

Used fdisk -l. Notice the GPT PMBR size mismatch – maybe it has some relevance?

Edit 3: Mounting EFI

Apparently macOS is able to mount and Finder list the contents of the EFI.

$ diskutil mountDisk disk2 One or more volume(s) failed to mount

enter image description here

The volume that fails to mount is the primary exFAT volume. macOS requires the EFI volume to be unmounted or it will complain about not properly ejecting disks.

How do you upgrade/update every package on your Mac?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:14 PM PDT

I want a single command to update everything on my Mac command line. No more brew update && brew upgrade && brew cleanup && brew doctor and npm update -g and that complicated command to update everything in pip3. Is there an existing tool for this, or should I just use a script? Also, is this even a good idea? Is there any benefit to updating all my software individually?

For reference, this is the current function I have in my .zshrc that is supposed to update everything:

function update () {    (brew update && brew upgrade && brew cleanup && brew doctor) &    upgrade_oh_my_zsh &    npm update -g &    (pip3 list --outdated --format=freeze | grep -v '^\-e' | cut -d = -f 1  | xargs -n1 pip3 install -U) &    (cd ~/.vim_runtime && git pull --rebase)  }

Turn on Do Not Disturb mode on all devices from one device

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 07:04 PM PDT

Has anyone found a way to turn on Do Not Disturb mode for every device from one.

Often times when I'm trying to work and people won't shut up I turn on DND mode on my MBP but then my iPhone will start dinging away. So I turn on DND mode there too. Then iPad starts up etc. This is an almost endless process. There's an additional 2 other Macs tied into my iCloud account. I've been tempted to just turn it off completely but it's about as handy as it is annoying.

Also find that when I need to turn DND mode off I forget on 1 device or more causing some annoyance if I actually need the notifications.

Ideally I'd like to be able to activate DND mode globally from my MBP.

I'm curious if anyone else has seen a possible solution to this.

How do I whitelist a domain in iOS restrictions web filter?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 11:31 PM PDT

Turning on iOS restrictions (Settings - General - Restrictions) and the web filter inside (probably "Websites - Restrict adult content" or something similar in English), I tried whitelisting wikipedia.org but the whitelist doesn't seem to work. For instance, the page "https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-based_access_control" is still blocked.

I tried whitelisting *.wikipedia.org/*. It still doesn't work, and I can't find any instructions on how to format the entries.

How do I exclude a specific domain from being filtered?

With respect, please refrain from non-answers such as "just turn off restrictions" or suggesting unrealistic solutions like "you have to enter every possible subdomain by hand without using wildcards".

How to get to know OS X/Unix better? [closed]

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:45 PM PDT

Not sure how to ask this but this problem has troubled me for so long.

I'd long been a DOS/Windows user until about 12 years ago when Mac OS X first came out I turned to the Mac, and stayed here ever since. I'm 32 so I basically grew up using text-based/command-line UI, starting from DOS 3.1 when 3.5" floppy disks weren't even supported. So I'm pretty comfortable using command line UI no problem. But the thing is, since I came to OS X, I've never really understood how this OS works.

Like say on DOS or early Windows OSes. I know there's autoexec.bat and config.sys where I can make changes to so to make the computer do what I want it do to at startup. And I know all the basic functions are stored in some directory called "Command" where I can find most of what I need to move around the OS. The file system is pretty straight forward. Each disk has a name, A, B, C, D, E and so on and so forth which appear to be at the top level of the file system, which makes sense to me as everything basically stored in these hardwares. And I also know if say I'm at certain directory but I need to use some function that's not in this directory, I can put the directory of that function into "PATH" so that I can use it wherever I want.

But on the Mac (and same on Linux. I've tried it quite a few times but sort of got stuck in the same place), I don't how to do any of these. Not that I need to do something like this everyday, since we have the all might GUI, but when I need it it's really a big problem for me. For example sometimes I need to install something that requires some command line knowledge, like Octave. After some research I know I need to use something called package manager like Fink, Macport or Homebrew. If they can just work out of the box I wouldn't be here asking this. The problem is very often they don't. They almost always get stuck in somewhere during the install. And there is also always some essential knowledge I don't know, like I can choose among the three but I can't use any two of them at the same time as my package manager or something might go wrong. OK, something might go wrong...how would I know that before something really goes wrong? Why is this case? Why can't I use both at the same time? When I install them, where do they put the binaries? Will Homebrew put the directory into the default path so I can use it whenever I want by itself? During install when there's warning or error, should I just ignore it?

The first time I tried to install Octave on my mac I actually tried all three without knowing I can't use all three at the same time. But what else could I do after seeing both Fink and Macport failed the job. And the last time I tried to install Octave it literately took me three days. Because at that I've already learned I couldn't use all three and also I should use Homebrew because it's the one that worked before. So it took me 3 days to do some ad-hoc research on the internet with no success, and then I thought I might just give Fink a try again, and it worked! I just don't understand any of this... And I should consider myself lucky that I even got it to work, because so far I still haven't found a way to install numpy to my Python 3. And don't know how long it had taken me now...

It's the same as when I used to want to try using Linux. I know a little bit of coding. Although I mainly use Python, I still have a bit of knowledge of languages like C/C#. So I know what compiling means. The problem with Linux (and mac too), is when I want to install something, often times I need to compile the binaries from the source code first. And a lot of things can go wrong during the process of compiling (to which I don't know why). And this is not something searching on the internet can help me cuz most of the answers provided on the internet are ad-hoc based. They tell you you should try this command or that command and see if that works. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But the problem is even if it works and solves the problem, I still don't know why it works. At this point I still don't know, say when I've finally finished compiling the source code, where is the binary? Is the binary I get the actually application or it's just an installer? If it's an installer, how do I install it? Where do I install it to? And things might go wrong during the installation as well. As I said earlier, resorting to the internet doesn't really help in this case cuz even if I've got it to work this time, next time when something similar happens, I still have to go through the whole internet-research thing again. It's really time-consuming and frustrating, cuz you don't know what you're doing and you feel like you're Sisyphus trying to get the rock to the top of the mountain over and over again just to see it rolls down once again...

So my question is this:

Is there any book or online course that can help me get to the bottom of this? Compared with spending another 100 hours on searching on the internet and still get stuck in the same place I rather spend that 100 hours (and I would assume it'd be far less than this) to build some firm foundation for my understanding of any Unix like system.

It's a long article so thank you so much for reading it!

I can't find a setting to disable WINS in Network settings

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 02:35 PM PDT

In my Network settings under WINS I have the NetBios name (elly) that I would like to disable (kill).

The message shows that the "elly"is currently been used ?

By whom, for what ?

There a bunch of messages in the Console with for example elly.local WindowServer ?? what server ? I do not have one ?

My search on Google and here did not help.

I tried deleting the NetBios name, but it comes back!

Also tried the without success!

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.netbiosd.plist

I have no local network, nor any workgroup set up, just a lone wifi connection to the world.

Running Hostname in Terminal shows "Elly.Local"

I would not mind using Terminal to kill it, but I'm just wondering whether there's any UI-based way to just turn off all of this stuff. I am not a big fan of running services I'm not using.

Is it possible to get the full suite of unix options for the command line tools on OS X?

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:45 PM PDT

I follow Unix Tool Tip on Twitter and it is interesting that many of the tips that are posted are not available on OS X.

For example:

cp - u will only copy files that don't exist, or are newer than their existing counterparts, in the destination directory.

Trying this on my machine results in:

cp: illegal option -- u usage: cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-fi | -n] [-apvX] source_file target_file cp [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-fi | -n] [-apvX] source_file ... target_directory

Why are these options not available and is it possible to get access to them on OS X?

Getting VPN to auto-reconnect on connection drop

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 11:24 PM PDT

I use the built-in VPN on Mac OS X 10.7.3. It's IPSec, FWIW. From time to time, it disconnects (probably an issue with my corporate server). Is there a way to get it to automatically reconnect? Sometimes I don't notice for a while, which is kinda annoying.
