Mouse moving vertically up and down, as well as clicking, on its own Posted: 22 May 2021 11:10 PM PDT While away from my desk, but the screen still visible, I noticed the mouse start to move. It went up to the current window's top bar, double clicked. This caused that window to minimize. Then it selected something on the next window (it was an Amazon window, it selected a particular shirt color). Then went to that window's top bar and double clicked. The next window was still a chrome window, but the content of the webpage wasn't interactable. On it, the mouse then zoomed in, dragged around a little, then went to the top of the screen and double clicked a running application's menu bar icon. Incidentally, this triggered a macOS dialog box to open asking me if I'd like to grant permission to the application to register all key events from all applications. At this point I immediately stepped in and started moving the mouse around to prevent it from hitting accept. I think it's important to note here that the mouse wasn't moving like a person would move it, but jumping from point to point. Despite intervening, the mouse just kept exhibiting what seemed like programmed behavior. Then in an effort to prevent any more activity I locked the screen. To my surprise, the behavior continued, then after several minutes stopped on its own. Not long after — perhaps 20 minutes — it started exhibiting what appeared to be the same pattern of motion (moving up, double clicking, moving to the center, clicking, etc.). This all happening on the lock screen. I tried disconnecting my trackpad and even my keyboard, but it did not stop the behavior. Now, it has been some hours since it first started, it stopped a couple of times more, but now it seems perpetual (been going on for two hours now). Is there any way for me to determine what could be causing the mouse to click and move without my input? |

Performance on Parallels shared folders Posted: 22 May 2021 11:53 PM PDT I using windows 10 x64 virtual machine on Parallels on macos on macbook pro 16" 16G of memory (last year model). I configured the vm to use all CPU 16 cores and 6G of memory. On windows I do Qt/C++ coding and I noticed macbook fans go full noise frequently (not to say all the time). I shared a folder from macos to windows (parallels shared folder) and I work on that folder all the time from windows and macos at the same time. I do all I can on macos but since the app I'm coding is a windows app I need to build on windows side. The shared folder was on iCloud before and I recently moved it out because of performance concerns. I'm not sure this helps or not. As I said, on windows side I build my code on a shared folder (parallels shared folder from host to guest). An alternative is not to work on a shared folder, however this way I cannot use macos simultaneously. Do you guys see my working environment setup is causing a performance issue? I was not expecting the fans to go high that much. In order to further study the issue I configured a windows laptop where I can login using windows remote desktop from macos thus being an alternative to virtual machine. And I compared the build time, on vm it takes around 1.5x (100s vs 150s) of the time it takes to build on real hardware on the windows laptop. I actually was expecting it to be the around the same. Is this reasonable? |

Apple TV unable to turn soundbar on/off Posted: 22 May 2021 03:05 PM PDT I have a LG soundbar connected to a Sharp TV via 3.5mm jack from the TVs headphone out and while I can adjust the volume using the remote of my Apple TV 4K powering it on and off together with Apple TV and TV doesn't work. My Amazon Fire TV Stick could be trained to do this yet I do not find an option besides volume with the Apple TV. I will get an optical cable to connect the soundbar to the TV but I doubt this'll change anything. It doesn't have hdmi but pairing the bar with the ATV via Bluetooth doesn't work. I get an error. It pairs with my iPhone just fine tho. |
Sleep/wake or backlight issue on 10.15 Catalina with disabled broken NVIDIA dGPU Posted: 22 May 2021 01:18 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) with a non-functioning NVIDIA dGPU, which I've disabled using the NVRAM method [1][2]. On MacOS Sierra, 10.12, this method (and moving the NVD* kexts) worked perfectly, including sleep/wake and brightness. Unfortunately I needed to update to MacOS Catalina, 10.15, for some required software compatibility, and now when it wakes from sleep, the display remains off (either it's trying to use the dGPU or the backlight does not come back on); brightness keys also no longer work. I can ssh in, so it's clearly waking from sleep, just no display, and I have to reboot. It's the same whether I use the software menu or close to laptop lid to sleep. Interestingly, the display sleep (set to a 10 minute timer in System Preferences) works fine (the backlight comes back on afterwards). Maybe is there a specific new kext that can be unloaded, and the equivalent kext from sierra loaded in its place? Otherwise, are there any low-level direct controls for the backlight? I've tried I'm aware of some hardware fixes [3] and [4] but I'm not sure if they apply to my specific model with NVIDIA dGPU, as this issue seems to be slightly more common with the previous AMD dGPU model. Ideally I'm hoping this can be fixed in software (and is revertable), as it clearly worked on sierra. Install an app from a simple little Makefile? Posted: 22 May 2021 11:31 AM PDT I have a simple little application written in Python that I mostly use on Linux, but I'd like to get it going on macOS too. On Linux I have a Makefile to install it - it's not an rpm or a deb or anything like that. Is there a way of just installing it from the Makefile on macOS too? On Linux, I'm using desktop-file-install to install the application, which is just a few .py's, a little shell, and an icon file as an SVG or PNG. I found dockutil on macOS in homebrew, which looks kind of similar, but it seems to want to use a preexisting .app directory under /Applications. What's the easiest (read: no clickitis) way to automatically add an application to the dock on macOS, if you just have a few python and bash scripts and an icon file? Thanks! PS: I'm likely the only person in the world using this, so there's not much point in creating a .dmg or something. |
Posted: 22 May 2021 11:10 AM PDT Notes seems to work well for syncing my own notes with myself between my iPhone and my Mac. But when I go to do something simple with someone else, like sharing a shopping list with my wife, it breaks. On the iPhone, I can share Notes folders with my wife. If I do that, she can see them on her phone and I can see them on mine. But the instant I share the folder with her, even if she hasn't gotten the notification or opened it, it disappears from my Mac and from iCloud. It reappears if I turn off sharing. On the Mac, I cannot share folders, I can only share individual Notes. Could this disconnect between the two flavors of Notes.app be part of the problem? Do they have different DOMs? The Sharing function on this app appears to be a total kludge. The best advice I've gotten from searching this forum is "Sharing doesn't work; don't do it." Is that the best there is? It works reasonably well for myself, synching between iPhone and Mac nearly simultaneously, so I use it all the time for my personal organization. I even use it for things like having a note open in both devices and dictating on my iPhone and then copy/pasting that text on my Mac (my Mac is really poor at dictation compared to the iPhone). I would like to not have to use a different app for shared notes. That's a very awkward workflow. Is there a way to get the Sharing function in Notes to work without hiding the notes from myself? Is there another app where both dictation and synching with my own devices work just as quickly, where sharing with someone else also works? Thanks. |
BigSur Click on Dock App does not change to Space with App Posted: 22 May 2021 11:03 AM PDT On catalina and earlier osx, I used to click on the app on dock to switch between spaces. This seems not to be working on BigSur. Strangely, I couldn't find anything about this on the internet... I would expect more people to be complaining about it. If this is an isolated behaviour, please let me know. Otherwise, anyone has any hints on how to get back to the previous behaviour? |

Apple Script runs fine, need kill switch Posted: 22 May 2021 11:38 PM PDT The following script runs fine in the /etc folder and called by a plist. It basically says text when the battery is too low. This is a simplified version, the real script is much longer. The problem is that I haven't found a good way for a kill switch. The kill switch will be operated by a user without admin rights. I am open to any suggestions for a kill switch. As an example, I found this topic that implements a condition if "Do not disturb" is active. I inserted this in the script and it works just fine in the Script Editor itself, but once the script is copied to the /etc folder and called by a plist the execution appears to halt at this line: Not sure why, could be regional settings (I'm using Dutch whereas the original script owner uses English (US). |
Music App won't airplay to HomePod mini when MacBook Pro is connected to external displays Posted: 22 May 2021 05:34 PM PDT Trying to AirPlay from the Music App to my HomePod mini results in the following: "The selected movie won't play on one of your connected displays." When I dismiss the popup and hit play it will play one song before popping up once more. I do have two external monitors that seem to be impacting this. When disconnecting the displays AirPlay works as expected. Is there a workaround for this? Full Alert: |
Posted: 22 May 2021 11:17 AM PDT I have an old application I've been using on Linux for a quite a while that I like very much, and I'd like to use it on macOS sometimes. It's called hcm, and it lives at https://stromberg.dnsalias.org/~strombrg/hcm/ It's mostly about running commands on remote hosts (mostly X11 graphical applications, but some interactive shells), a little like putty, but with predefined hosts and commands. I mostly use it to start terminal emulators that'll do a script(1)-like tty log locally, while giving interactive access to a remote host over ssh. Each new tab from a given terminal emulator gives a new tty logfile, and a new shell on the remote host again over ssh. Is there a macOS terminal emulator, preferably an opensource one, that will respect $SHELL on each invocation? I gave iTerm2 and kitty a try, but they seem to ignore a test $SHELL. Alacritty wouldn't even run, with or without a test $SHELL, saying "Alacritty cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified." Suggestions please? Thanks! |
Built-in MacBook screen recognized as a separate display Posted: 22 May 2021 07:01 PM PDT I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro 13 inch. It was running macOS High Sierra and decided to try installing macOS Mojave using this patcher tool: http://dosdude1.com/mojave/. I successfully installed it with all its' kext files to be able to work with my Mac. Unfortunately, not everything worked perfectly. My built-in screen is showing up as an external display, which is causing it to always be open, even when it is in sleep mode. I also cannot dim the screen using the buttons on the keyboard. Another problem is that my internal speakers are not showing up in my sound preferences. I tried plugging in headphones in the headphone jack, but that didn't work either. When I boot up the computer, there is a chime that plays, so that is a good sign that the speakers work. If there is anyone that can suggest any additional kext files I can download to make the display and audio work properly, that would be appreciated. Thank you! |

My Android no longer receives text messages from an iphone since signing in to imessages on my mac Posted: 22 May 2021 09:01 PM PDT I have a Mac, running Big Sur. I signed in to iMessages, and sent a message to my wife's iPhone. Now, messages from her iPhone no longer go to my Android, and I can find no way to stop it from sending to iMessage. Is this a bug? How do I fix it? |
Posted: 22 May 2021 08:06 PM PDT So I have a friend, who has an iMac Pro with high specs at his home and I thought about accessing his iMac Pro from my Macbook Pro via some kind of remote desktop service. I would do some rather extensive video editing on that iMac Pro, for which my Macbook Pro is just too slow currently as its a rather old one from 2016. My question now is how i would be able to access that iMac Pro from my Macbook Pro, so I can basically do some kind of screen sharing and use Final Cut Pro installed on that iMac Pro. I tried downloading Remote Desktop from the store, but I can only make it work, when both of our devices are in the same network (we tried it on wifi), but I just wasnt able to make it work when we are not both in the same network, which would be the actual case at hand, because I would need to access his iMac Pro from anywhere. I have seen something with SSH, but isnt that only for servers and such? Either way I just wanted to ask, if someone knows how to best get this setup working. |

Generating a mask png from a color image? Posted: 22 May 2021 12:08 PM PDT Apple requires certain icons to be monochrome masks with transparency in png file format. How (on macOS, using a built-in app, such as Preview, or an app in the App store, such as Pixelmator) can I convert an existing color image (png file), so that one color (a background) becomes transparency, and everything else becomes either pure black or pure white? Is it then possible to invert a mask? (transparency becomes black or white, and any non-transparent areas becomes transparent) |
Personal Hotspot not staying Connected Posted: 22 May 2021 02:02 PM PDT I'm not sure if I have an issue or if what I am seeing is by Apple-design. I have an iPad Pro (11.4) that I have the Personal Hotspot switched on.

How to obtain a list of files contained in a folder (as a text file) Posted: 22 May 2021 04:50 PM PDT I have a huge folder containing musical scores and books (mainly in .pdf). I would like to create a text document (TextEdit will do just fine) which contains the complete list of the folder's content (possibly even divided into subfolder). Is it possible? If not in a TextEdit file, maybe in Numbers? Is there any Automator process that can update that file so that when I add or modify a file, an entry is added / modified? |
