iOS distribution certificates expiring for two apps from same team: Do I need to take separate actions?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:48 AM PDT

I have two apps both associated with the same development team, and I've gotten notifications for both of them that Your iOS Distribution Certificate will no longer be valid in 30 days. I got these notifications for the two apps on separate days. I followed the instructions on this page and generated a new .p12 file, and now on developer.apple.com under Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles there's a new iOS Distribution Certificate for our team.

What I Want To Know: Do I need to take separate actions for each app, or is this all I need to do?

How can I update the firmware on my 2017 iMac without its original SSD?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:32 AM PDT

I've just discovered that the firmware on my 2017 27" iMac running macOS 10.14.6 is outdated. The boot ROM version is 181.0.0.0.0 according to System Information.

I'd like to update it, partly because if I don't I won't be able to update to Monterey normally or boot into the internet recovery environment.

However, it has a third party SSD installed in it, not the original SSD that came with my iMac. It looks like there's now no way for me to update the firmware, as Apple doesn't release standalone firmware updaters, and the firmware updaters that run when updating macOS require the original SSD to be installed, at least for firmwares before 195.0.0.0.

Is there anything I can do to update its firmware?

Can I reset the "sign in with apple" stable id for a site?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:44 AM PDT

I would like to reset the stable id for a site on which I used "sign in with apple" so that a new account is created and the old one is detached from my apple id. Is this possible? I used "hide my email", but even if I deactivate the generated email address it is just re-appears if I login on the site again.

How can I search a specific type of file on a macOS with a condition?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:40 AM PDT

I want to search only files created by Fl Studio but if I search in Spotlight for files with the .flp extension I get also the autosaved versions of the files.

Is there any way to search only the .flp files and not the autosaved versions?

Old MacBook Air not starting

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:14 AM PDT

I got this old Mac (13-inch 2011 MacBook Air) which as I understand should run macOS Lion.

I'm new to mac.

The issue is that every time I turn on the laptop I get greeted with the 'macOS X Utilities', where I can do some certain stuff: Restore from Time Machine backup, reinstall macOS x, get help online, and Disk Utility.

I tried to reinstall from the above options but as soon as the loader is finished Mac restarts and greets me with the same window, but at this point, several GBs are used on the laptop, I checked it from Disk Utility.

When I try to Choose the Startup Disk, there is nothing it's completely empty.

What should I do to get my Mac working?

Should I create an image of the downloaded file that can be chosen as an installer disk? If yes, how can I do that?

Lossless scan over AirPrint

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:46 AM PDT

I have an EPSON printer that I use to scan documents. I find that regardless of the file format and target DPI in the AirPrint scanner settings, it comes out with very visible JPEG artifacts, leading me to believe that there is some sort of compression going on within AirPrint. Scanning directly from the printer to a USB with JPEG does not leave artifacts of this magnitude.

Is this a problem with AirPrint? Is it possible to scan lossless over AirPrint?

Edit: I also tried EPSON's own scanning utility downloaded from the support section of the printer page. Selecting "TIFF" results in a 100MB file with similar magnitude of artifacts. Is this then a problem with how EPSON handles wireless transfer of image?

My Mac disconnects all USB devices connected via my Blackmagic EGPU (Thunderbolt)

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 01:29 AM PDT

My intel macbook sometime randomly disconnects all USB devices that are connected through the black magic eGPU. It doesn't seem to be an issue with the thunderbolt connection as my multi-monitor setup doesn't get impacted.

I tried debugging this but can't see any errors in the dmesg log that would indicate a fault. What's a good way to debug this and get a root cause? This only started happening after the Monterey update.

Mac mini stuck in boot (progress bar full) after SSD Upgrade

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 04:11 AM PDT

I've done the following:

  • created a time machine backup from a mac mini with a 1TB HDD (only used about 40GB).
  • replaced the disk with a previously used, working SSD - Samsung EVO 850, 500GB.
  • time machine restore - seemed to go smooth.
  • booted up the machine.

Current state is Progress bar full with apple logo, stuck all night.

I've done a verbose boot, and could see the following errors:

localhost com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.metadata.mds) <Notice>: Service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out for 10 seconds.

Trying to load in single user mode gives the following errors:

failed to locate mount-on path: /private/var/vm Failed to mount vm volume (2) failed to mount vm volume!BootCache: Root disk is an SSD, not caching

If there is any way to extract errors from the log, I could post them here. Let me know in the comments if I can improve my question.

Restore older macOS from Time Machine backup - why is it vital to not connect backup drive after OS updade?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 02:22 AM PDT

As Tetsujin mentions in the comments of the answer to 'Can I revert a new MacOS X installation using a Time Machine backup?', I should not connect the backup drive after my OS update if I plan to easily restore the devices former state including files and the previous macOS. Is there a safe was to connect the backup drive anyways without making the backup more complicated? By turning off Time Machine before connecting it for example?

Another optional question: how would I have to recover from the backup when it got messed up by connecting the drive after the update?

Cannot move or select files on desktop after showing desktop with gesture on trackpad

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 12:17 AM PDT

The trackpad gesture moving four fingers apart shows the desktop. Usually I then was able to select, open, move etc. files on the desktop. But since a few weeks ago the desktop seem to be locked and I cannot do anything. It is not a hardware problem, the trackpad works fine everywhere else.

Any ideas how to fix this?

How can I use my Google Account with Apple apps (Mail, Calendar, etc) in OS X 10.10 and older?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:29 AM PDT

For months, Google has been warning me that I "may lose access to apps that are using less secure sign-in technology".

email

The warnings directed to this page with more information. Starting on May 30, Google was planning to prevent software which does not use the modern OAuth2 authentication scheme from logging into any Google account. Unfortunately, this includes Apple applications built into OS X 10.10 and older, such as Mail, Contacts, and Calendar. (This applies even to accounts added via "Sign in with Google", and even though "less secure app access" was not previously required.)

I am using OS X 10.9 Mavericks. As was foretold, on the morning of June 1, 2022 at around 7 am EDT, the Mail, Calendar, and Notes apps spontaneously became unable to connect to my Google account.

How can I use my Google account without updating to an ugly flat version of OS X?

Why does `pmset -g thermlog` behave so strangely when piped?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 12:16 AM PDT

I'm trying to create some monitoring for the thermal throttling during some build operations. For that I'd wanted to make use of pmset -g thermlog, which works great when used directly in the console, but seems to behave weirdly when piped to tee for example.

What I can observe is that these 3 lines are printed immediately, but the actual values are only emitted if another update is emitted, and for that update only the timestamp is printed immediately and the data only when another event is emitted. (For illustration purposes I only included the first "partial" event).

$ pmset -g thermlog | tee foo.txt Note: No thermal warning level has been recorded Note: No performance warning level has been recorded 2022-06-02 14:52:03 +0200

This doesn't happen when used without the piping.

$pmset -g thermlog Note: No thermal warning level has been recorded Note: No performance warning level has been recorded 2022-06-02 14:51:34 +0200 CPU Power notify CPU_Scheduler_Limit = 100 CPU_Available_CPUs = 16 CPU_Speed_Limit = 100

And it works fine if I use therm instead of thermlog, altough that only ever prints the one event obviously.

$ pmset -g therm | tee foo.txt  Note: No thermal warning level has been recorded  Note: No performance warning level has been recorded  2022-06-02 14:51:55 +0200 CPU Power notify      CPU_Scheduler_Limit     = 100      CPU_Available_CPUs  = 16      CPU_Speed_Limit     = 100

I actually want to consume the process output via Java's java.lang.Process, but there I see the same issue with the event data not being written immediately to the out stream.

Can somebody explain what is wrong here and ideally provide a fix for using thermlog. I know that I could just query therm repeatedly, but that has a lower resolution and is not what I'm looking for.

Why do I keep getting this DeactivateSystemExtension popup on macOS Monterey 12.4?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 08:00 AM PDT

I upgraded to macOS Monterey 12.4 yesterday and today I keep getting this "DeactivateSystemExtension" message, asking me for my login credentials. Not knowing what this is I cancel it, thinking I might have some kind of malware or virus. However, it keeps coming back.

A Google search really doesn't pull up anything, except some reference to MacAfee, which I have never installed.

I've scanned my system for viruses using the free version of Antivirus One (by Trend Micro) from the Mac App Store, but found nothing.

Does anyone know what this is?

enter image description here

I also have observed that my Jabra headset software is now showing the following error message:

enter image description here

It appears that these two issues may be related, but I cannot say for sure. I can confirm, however, that the Jabra software was now reporting this issue before upgrading to macOS 12.4.

Permissions issue with shared folder using SMB. macOS can't open Linux files, but Linux can open macOS files without issue

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:26 AM PDT

Why can't the macOS machine open any files in the shared folder that were transferred from the Linux machine? The permissions seem to be correct. The shared folder is located on the macOS machine / it owns the shared folder.

I have a shared folder on macOS Catalina (It's just the default Public folder) that can be accessed by an Ubuntu machine. The share is set up using SMB.

If the Linux machine copies over a photo, text file, whatever into the shared folder, the macOS machine cannot open it. I get a permissions error. If the macOS machine does the same, the Linux machine has no problems whatsoever.

I have tried many settings on macOS to no avail including "Apply to enclosed items".

Here's a screenshot of all the sharing settings on macOS so you can see what I have done. Permissions issue

The first screenshot shows the error when the admin account on macOS tries to open any file that was transferred from the Linux machine. The account has read/write permissions to the shared folder. Even if I copy a file to the macOS desktop, the error persists.

The second screenshot shows Sharing settings in System Preferences. The blacked out parts are just the folder name and the two users who have access to said folder. One user is the macOS admin account, the other user is login credentials for the Linux machine.

The third screenshot is details of the shared folder by right clicking > Get Info.

  • macOS Catalina is the machine sharing the folder
  • Ubuntu 20.0.4 can see the shared folder and use it without issue
  • The machines are connected on a local network
  • The Linux machine has it's own login credentials to the shared folder that were set up on the mac. It is not using a "guest" account.

Is it possible to remap the enter key on a iPad Smart Keyboard?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 02:41 AM PDT

I have an iPad Pro 12.9", third generation, with an Apple Smart Keyboard.

I'd like to remap the keys so that the enter key and right shift key are switched, i.e. to enter a new line, I hit right shift and to capitalize Letters, I use Enter.

I know that special keys like caps lock, control, option or command can be remapped, but didn't find any way to remap other keys.

Can it be done? Is there perhaps an app that can do it?

When I open in Windows a zipped folder compressed by Mac, it's empty [closed]

Today when I compressed the folder to zip but opened it in Windows the folder was empty. Why did this happen? What should I do to avoid this problem? What should I do to make the compressed file work for both Windows & Mac?

Unable to activate iPad 4 after restoration

Apple Silicon M1 Chip - Homebrew installer installing into Intel folder

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 08:37 AM PDT

I am following the official Homebrew installation guide correctly and running:

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"

According to the guide:

This script installs Homebrew to its preferred prefix (/usr/local for macOS Intel, /opt/homebrew for Apple Silicon and /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew for Linux) so that you don't need sudo when you brew install. It is a careful script; it can be run even if you have stuff installed in the preferred prefix already. It tells you exactly what it will do before it does it too. You have to confirm everything it will do before it starts.

I am running on Monterey:

enter image description here

However, this is not the case for me, as it is disregarding the fact that I am running Apple Silicon M1 chip and is trying to install Homebrew into the Intel prefix! Terminal output:

~ % /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"  ==> Checking for `sudo` access (which may request your password)...  Password:  ==> This script will install:  /usr/local/bin/brew  /usr/local/share/doc/homebrew  /usr/local/share/man/man1/brew.1  /usr/local/share/zsh/site-functions/_brew  /usr/local/etc/bash_completion.d/brew  /usr/local/Homebrew  ==> The following new directories will be created:  /usr/local/bin  /usr/local/etc  /usr/local/include  /usr/local/lib  /usr/local/sbin  /usr/local/share  /usr/local/var  /usr/local/opt  /usr/local/share/zsh  /usr/local/share/zsh/site-functions  /usr/local/var/homebrew  /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked  /usr/local/Cellar  /usr/local/Caskroom  /usr/local/Frameworks    Press RETURN to continue or any other key to abort:

Why does the installer not attempt or prompt me to install Homebrew into the /opt/homebrew/ folder? What must I do? Every guide and question I can find online seems to suggest that it should do this automatically anyway. Grateful for any help!

Error when handling tagged files in Finder

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 08:03 AM PDT

When handling files with Finder tags I frequently get an error alert, "The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -8076)." This usually happens when I have multiple tagged items selected. Sometimes it happens a few times in quick succession, with the alert popping up again as soon as it is dismissed... & again, & again, up to 5 times.

enter image description here

Can anyone tell me of a way to stop this happening? (apart from not using Finder tags)

iOS Shortcut, regex match these words, while excluding these words

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 01:00 AM PDT

I am using iOS Shortcuts and am using it get contents of page (converts the page to RTF), then running through make text to turn it into plain text.

I am trying to develop an IUC flavored regex to search for key words/phrases on a list of pages I am looping over with a while each, but want the regular expression to exclude other phrases and prevent a false-positive trigger.

I have it set up with two capture groups. I'm not sure if it is desired to make the second group a non-capture group, or not attempt capture at all. I only think the second one must be either a capture, or non-capture group for the logical AND provided. I read that (this)(that) acts as an and, but I'm not sure if either is a negate, whether it follows that logic. For that reason, I'm not sure if the negate should not be it's own capture group, non-capture group, or shouldn't be using the brackets at all. I had tried some nested capture group stuff, but that seems to not follow the syntax.

Currently, I have tried a wide variety of regular expressions. I do not have a full list, but I can share a few permutations I have tried starting with the most recent:

(?>Include\sTerm\sOne|Include\sTerm\sTwo|Include\sTerm\s3)(?:<!Exclude\sTerm\sOne|Exclude\sTerm\sTwo|Exclude\sTerm\s3) (?Include\sTerm\sOne|Include\sTerm\sTwo|Include\sTerm\s3)^(?!Exclude\sTerm\sOne|Exclude\sTerm\sTwo|Exclude\sTerm\s3)

Just to be clear, I want it to first search the exclude terms and fail if it finds one. Then if it doesn't find any of these negate terms, then begin searching through the include terms. It is fine that the include list and exclude list terms, respective to each grouping are being treated on an OR basis (per piping |) as that is the intended behavior I'm seeking. Finally, I am wanting to start my search at the top of the page and for it to stop searching / attempting capture in this logical order:

  • Exclude term found, STOP -- First include term found, STOP

Final note, this search is obviously performed over multiple lines. I am only seeking to capture the include term, not the exclude term. I only want the exclude term to cancel out a match of both exist (either before or after - cross directionally). That is if an exclude term exists, negate the positive term and provide zero matches.

How to delete hidden login iterms from backgrounditems.btm? CML way is prefered

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:01 AM PDT

I am running MacOS Big Sur. I installed some apps downloaded online. I found out many apps were started automatically at startup.

By googling and examining my system, I figured out they were started from the file backgrounditems.btm which is located at ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.backgroundtaskmanagementagent/. The file stores Login Items.

By running a python script downloaded online, I can see many Login Items registerd in the file backgrounditems.btm and they are NOT shown in System Preferences > Users > myuser > Login Iterms.

I tried the command osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to delete login item "name"' to delete the hidden login iterm, but failed with error message "36:73: execution error: System Events got an error: Can't get login item "myapp.app". (-1728)"

These hidden login iterms are also NOT shown when I use the command osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get the name of every login item'.

So my question is how to remove those unwanted login iterms to stop them autostart at my login. Command Line Way is prefered. I think some GUI apps such as ccleaner may do the job, but I don't want to install some GUI apps which may be autostarted themselves. Basically, I don't want to install an autostart iterm to remove autostart items.

Thanks a lot.

Update

I figured out the file is in a binary plist format.

Then I tried two tools.

One is the default cml tool plutil. Another one is a thirdy party tool ProperTree. Both can convert and open the binary plist as XML plain plist. But even with a plain plist format, it's kinda hard to understand it. The important sections are still coded in base64 format in xml.

I can decode base64 with many tools, but I still feel it's kinda too much work for this purpose. Do anyone know any easier way to remove hidden login iterms from the file? Thanks.

Latest Windows 10 update (March 2021) broke Bluetooth on mid-2014 MacBook Pro Retina

Posted: 02 Jun 2022 11:05 PM PDT

Running Windows 10 on Boot Camp on a MacBook Pro Retina from mid-2014 (with Catalina, if that makes a difference). Bluetooth was working fine till last night. Today it installed a system update and Bluetooth is no longer working on Windows.

In Settings, it says Bluetooth is on and lists all the paired devices (currently only a Voxon mouse). I use a Belkin numeric keypad as well, but when I noticed it wasn't working I removed the device from the list thinking I could just add it again. Big mistake. Now my computer can't find the keypad when I click on "Add Bluetooth or other device". The keypad is literally right next to my Mac and has newly charged batteries. I also tried with a different pair of batteries at about half charge, so it isn't that. It works perfectly with macOS.

My mouse doesn't work either despite it showing up on the list of paired devices (again, tried changing the batteries without success). Again, works with macOS.

I thought it was a driver problem, but I can't find a list of drivers for Belkin keypads on Belkin's website, Apple's website or Google. All the Google results I can find for BlueTooth issues on Windows on Boot Camp are from 2016 or earlier and terribly outdated.

Thanks for any help.

Edit:

Tried uninstalling the system updates (Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Installed Updates > Microsoft Windows). It showed three updates:

  • "Servicing Stack 10.0.19041.860"
  • "Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5000802)"
  • "Feature Update to Windows 10 20H2 via Enablement Package something something something"

It would only let me uninstall the latter two. Bluetooth still not working.

Another edit (07 May 2021):

Restoring a previous OS version didn't work.

A few weeks after I reported the problem here, the computer decided to detect BlueTooth devices properly again (no updates in the meantime). This lasted for a few weeks before the problem spontaneously appeared again (no updates in the meantime). It's been like that, a few weeks on and a few weeks off, since then.

Apple Business Manager and Apple Developer Program

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:01 AM PDT

My team developed custom application for a company, and now we are trying to deploy the application to the employee owned devices. We decided to use the Apple Business Manager and some MDM solution for managing the devices.

1.Using the Apple Developer Program is the only way to make the application available on the Apple Business Manager account for further distribution, is this correct?

2.Once the application is distributed, from the Apple Developer Account to the Apple Business Manager, in case there are no updates needed for the application, there is no need to renew the Apple Developer account and pay the fee. Meaning the application will still be available for distribution and using on the Apple Business Manager Account. Is this also correct?

How to tile windows without going into full screen?

Posted: 02 Jun 2022 10:27 PM PDT

Currently, if I want to tile two instances, I press the green button on the top-left and place the instance accordingly.

However, each of the tiled instances always go into full screen mode. For a chrome instance, this is annoying as it means it's not possible to see the tabs.

How do I tile windows without making them go full screen?

What happens when the Mac OS menu bar fills up with too many icons?

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 01:24 AM PDT

When the Mac OS menu bar fills up with too many icons on the upper right side, and begins to encroach on the space of the menu text, will the OS begin to make the menu bar taller and wrap the icons? Or will the icons simply overflow / overlay the menu text?

This question assumes that Bartender is not installed.
