Not able to sign in to Apple ID on MacBook due to device passcode issues?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 02:58 PM PDT

M1 Macbook Air, on Big Sur, 11.0. Try to sign in with my Apple ID, get to the point where it asks me to enter the passcode for one of my other devices. It shows me my iPad and my iPhone; if I select either one, and enter the correct passcode (and the passcode has never changed on either device, and I definitely have it correct, confirmed on the devices), it hangs for a while and then says the passcode didn't match. Eventually gives me a "too many times" error.

I'm not the "first" user on the device, if that makes any difference (my wife is) - but I'm an administrator.

Other than updating (which I will probably do), is there anything I should do to get around this? It's not the end of the world, but keychain doesn't sync, which is a big pain.

Mysterious window-movement mode

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 02:01 PM PDT

Sometimes, on my MacBook Air M1 running MacOS 12.4, the system becomes mysteriously unresponsive until I click the trackpad, and then a window jumps to a new place on the screen and the system works fine again. I figure that the the window manager somehow got into a mode where I'm moving the window by clicking the desired new location instead of dragging.

  1. What keystroke and/or mouse gesture enters this window-movement mode?

  2. How can I disable it or otherwise prevent going into this mode?

Script executed when application Bluestacks is deleted from Trash

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 04:59 PM PDT

I just noticed something interesting when uninstalling Bluestacks on MacOS Monterey.

I dragged the app to the trash and when I clicked empty trash, there was a prompt to allow to run a sh script. I then got a dialog from Bluestacks saying that it was uninstalled.

I presume Bluestacks wants to uninstall other system files/extensions it installed when I removed the app. What I'm curious is how did the empty trash action trigger the script to run?

List of NotChargingReason Codes from terminal command ioreg

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 11:52 AM PDT

Does anyone know the descriptions of the NotChargingReason code from the ioreg command.

For example, when I type this command:

ioreg -l -w0 | grep 'ChargerData'

I get the following output:

 "ChargerData" = {"ChargingCurrent"=0,"NotChargingReason"=23,"ChargingVoltage"=13048,"VacVoltageLimit"=4350}

I've seen different code numbers for the NotChargingReason variable besides 23. I've also seen 6, 4 and 1... I would just like to know if there is a text description of these codes somewhere?

I have tried googling with no luck... and mind you, I'm not your typical googler. I'm a programmer who knows how to use the advanced google features.

Minimum macOS for New Web Developer Workers [closed]

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 11:47 AM PDT

I work full-time as a web developer for a company. Our company is hiring new web developers, often as contractors.

We've had issues with new workers trying to do web development for us using Macs that have very old version of macOS installed which causes some software to NOT work.

What's the oldest macOS we should allow new web developers to have installed, and be able to use common software?

I currently have macOS Big Sur installed and some of the web development and business software I use include:

Is there any way to use WhatsApp on an older iPad (iOS 12)? If not, why not?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 12:41 PM PDT

I have WhatsApp installed on my iPhone. I regularly use WhatsApp Web to check and post to WhatsApp from my laptop. I would like to also use WhatsApp on my iPad. Unfortunately my iPad is an older model that cannot be updated past iOS 12. I've tried using WhatsApp Web in Safari on the iPad but it does not seem to work. I haven't found any documentation that explicitly states that WhatsApp Web cannot work on an older iPad; the closest I've found is this page, which says

With the release of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.1 Apple is making one huge change to Safari that is going to make it much more useful for many people... That change is the move to make Safari behave like a desktop web browser, ensuring websites provide the full experience rather than a cut down mobile version. One byproduct of that is the fact you can now use the WhatsApp Web interface on an iPad, too.

This suggests that the problem is that Safari in iOS 12 only will load the mobile version of a webpage, and seems to leave open the possibility that perhaps if I used a different browser on my old iPad I might be able to make this work. But alas, so far I have been unsuccessful; I tried Firefox, which looked at first like it was loading the WhatsApp Web interface and then hung.

Is there any way to make this work, and if not, why not? (If it's genuinely impossible then it's clearly not just a Safari limitation, or else I could work around it by using a different browser.)

How to get "3 months of Apple TV+ for free" offer back?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 11:09 AM PDT

We bought a new MacBook Pro for my wife around a month ago and there was this message about "3 months of Apple TV+ for free" somewhere in settings, but it has disappeared recently. Is there any way to get it back?

Here it says

Offer is available for eligible devices for a limited time only.

but I'm not sure if it actually means, you have to redeem it in X days or it is too late.

Is Universal Control flaky for you between Intel Mac and M1 mac?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 12:26 PM PDT

Computer A: intel imac, 2020, monterery 12.4

Computer B: m1, macbook pro, 2020, monterey 12.4

Computer C: ipad pro, 2017

I have universal control set up between these 3 machines. The Universal Control connection works fine for a bit between the Computer A and B but then suddenly stops working. Might happen after only 10 min, but more often it takes a couple of hours before the problem occurs.

Connection between A and C is usually never lost.

To restore the connection, I turn UC off and back on.

Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know of anything I can try to fix this annoyance?

"The server responded with '400' to operation CalDAVUpdateShareesQueuableOperation."

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 09:06 AM PDT

When I try to share a calendar in Apple Calendar, I get the error message, "The server responded with an error. The request for account 'iCloud' failed. The server responded with '400' to operation CalDAVUpdateShareesQueuableOperation."

I tried following the solution in "CalDAVUpdateShareesQueuableOperation" in Apple Community. I also tried following the answer in iCloud Calendar sync error 400 on OS X 10.10.2 on AskDifferent. Both of these solutions caused the error message to go away temporarily.

Unfortunately, when I try to share the calendar again, the error message returns. Can you please help me to share the calendar without the error message?

This question is different from iCloud Calendar sync error 400 on OS X 10.10.2 because, in that question, sharing a calendar did not trigger the error, and in my question, it did. Also, that question refers to macOS 10.10.2, and my question refers to macOS 11.2.3. I tried commenting on that question, but I did not have enough reputation.

/bin/launchctl problem on start mysql after upgrade to 12.4

How to stop DNS spoofing warnings when I change boot media

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 11:27 AM PDT

I am using my Mac as the base workstation to program for a Raspberry Pi project. I use SSH as the primary tool to communicate with and work on the Pi. In the process of experimenting and trying out hardware packages I often initialize a new microSD card, so I am frequently swapping between cards from which to boot my Pi.

Problem: each card gets initialized with a different host key. So I am constantly seeing messages like the one below. Various advice I find online would suggest, just delete that host from ~/.ssh/known_hosts. But no! The message persists. Clearly, on the Mac, there is ANOTHER file of information about hosts, and it is keeping the old one around. Where is that file?

Can I just somehow suppress this entire warning system on my mac? Using SSH to an address on the local network, I don't think my exposure to hacking is too terribly great, and it would be really helpful to just be able to switch cards without a hitch.

Preview increases the size of a tiff file created by epson scanner when manipulating it and saving

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 08:35 AM PDT

I have an Epson scanner and i have scanned a photo to my mac book pro.

I am running macOS BigSur 11.6.7.

Finder is showing the size of the resulting .tiff file as 6.2mb. I wanted to select a portion of the photo and then create a new .tiff file from the selection.

Here is what I did

  1. I opened the scan photo in the preview app.
  2. I selected the portion of the image I wanted to create a new file out of.
  3. Copy the selected portion.
  4. Cmd N, this open a new tab which contains the copied portion of the image.
  5. I saved the new file with a different name.

The size of the new file is 30mb. Now, I was expecting the new file to have a size much smaller than the original.

What is happening? Why is the new file so big?

Is it possible to copy an entire APFS format Time Machine disk to another drive under Monterey?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 09:36 AM PDT

I have an old USB connected SSD that I have been using as a Time Machine target on a Mac running macOS 12 (Monterey). This old drive was setup on this Mac under Monterey so it was formatted APFS from the get-go. Recently I purchased a new SSD which will also be connected via USB. I would like to copy the entire contents of the old SSD to the new SSD and then start to use the new SSD as a Time Machine target. The old SSD would then be repurposed. Is this possible?

Stop Mouse pointer sticking - snapping when going from Macbook to External Screen above

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 03:00 PM PDT

In the picture the Red line is where my mouse sticks. it has a snap to grid like feel. it does not stick at the other external monitor boundary just the top of the mac screen. and only when 2 displays are touching top and side boundaries.

This is my setup

enter image description here

This is where it sticks (RED) - unfortunately you cannot fully see it because I covered it with red but if you look closely the top menu grey line on the mac is curved, this ends up being the key to the problem.

This is where it doesn't stick

It also does not stick if the macbook is at the top (but this is not an option)

Determining if Low Power Mode is Enabled/Disabled from Command Line · macOS 12.2.1 (Monterey)

According to this article the following script should return the current Power Mode state:

pmset -g |grep lowpowermode

This is what it actually returns in my case:

When set through system preferences, the script doesn't seem to change in either Low or High Power mode.

Doesn't change neither if the script is:

Can the iPad Magic Keyboard with Trackpad steer the MacOS mouse cursor when iPad is Extended Display for Mac?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 12:01 PM PDT

I have the iPad Pro (12.9" 3rd Generation) running iPadOS 15, and an Intel Mac Mini running MacOS Monterey 12.3.1 (latest versions per of this writing).

The iPad Pro is connected as Extended Display, which shows a MacOS Desktop space on the iPad.

I currently have the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and the iPad Pro Smart Keyboard Folio (without Trackpad). Both of these devices can control the MacOS computer. The Keyboard be used to type, and the Apple Pencil can control the mouse cursor in MacOS. (NB: Unfortunately, touching the iPad screen via fingers does not control the MacOS mouse cursor).

Can the iPad Magic Keyboard (with Trackpad) steer the cursor when iPad is an Extended Display for MacOS like this? I simply want to be able to control the mouse cursor on my Mac with the iPad's Magic Keyboard Trackpad.

Why does an M1 MBP incorrectly recognize a monitor that a 2015 MBP gets right?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 07:50 AM PDT

The M1 machine incorrectly detects the high res monitor in some way, and thus does not allow Display Scaling to work correctly. There is some coverage of this issue, but I'm trying to understand why it happens.

The scenario:

i.e. when the external monitor is set to full 4k, the text is tiny - and this is because OSX doesn't allow me to use the Display Scaling feature.

  1. Both machines are running the same version of MacOS (Monterrey).
  2. The monitor is 4k (3840 x 2160), and has USB-C and HDMI ports. The
  3. MBPs each have USB and HDMI ports
  4. The issue happens regardless of which combination of ports are use

I understand that some people use BetterDummy to solve this problem, but I'm trying to understand Why it is happening. I know this article makes some reference to the monitors being unrecognized, but what about them is different from a another monitor that works correctly?

Monterey: Cycle through layouts in "most recent used" order

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 09:04 AM PDT

I use two languages A and B regularly, so I need to switch between them with a simple press of option+space. However, I sometimes also need to use a third language C.

I want to be able to press option+space to go from A to B, then again to go from B to A (without having to go through C). But I also need to switch to C sometimes by pressing option+space two times sequentially. Then it'd cycle between C and the last used language.

So what I want is "most recently used" order for switching layouts.

Can I do this with MacOS?

Why is htop and Activity Monitor showing different even when running htop as sudo?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 05:02 PM PDT

I have installed htop using homebrew on an M1 Macbook Air. Below, one can see that the used memory reported by htop and Activity Monitor are different.

I am aware of other answers in this website where people recommend htop to be invoked under sudo privileges: sudo htop. In theory, this should make them both match. However, the screenshot below was taken just after having invoked it under sudo.

What am I missing?

Preventing Relocated Items shortcut after every update

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 06:06 PM PDT

The Problem

My Mac has received a new Relocated Items folder after every OS update since March 8th, 2020. This was around the time I upgraded to Big Sur I think. If I delete the shortcut, it'll just come back after the next OS update.

I have seen several threads related to this issue, but none so far have been particularly helpful in solving the actual problem.

Most threads say this can be simply deleted and ignored. However, I am getting this Relocated Items after every update, which seems unusual since I'm not modifying the files between each update. If I delete the shortcut or folders in the parent folder, they will just reappear after my next system update. So far I have had to live with the shortcut always being on my desktop, which is particularly unhelpful as I'm no longer checking it to see if anything actually important will go there, it is just taking up space. I just checked and I now have 20 "Previously Relocated Items" folders, all with the same contents.

Therefore, I'm hoping to move beyond just ignoring the files, and instead actually resolving the underlying conflict(s) to stop this file re-creation from happening.

The Relocated Items

The folder tree inside the many Relocated Items folders all contains three files under Configuration:

  • /private/etc/groups.system_default
  • /private/etc/paths.system_default
  • /private/etc/shells.system_default

Using some research from other threads, I ran a diff comparison these three files to their matching files in /etc (without .system_default). The differences vary between the files.

Groups

Unlike paths and shells, the groups.system_default doesn't have any changes that I recognize. That said, this is also seemingly the most common file found in Relocated Items. The only difference between the two groups files is that the /etc/groups file doesn't have the _trustd:*:282:_trustd line.

Will adding this line into the /etc/groups file prevent this "Relocated Item" from happening on each update, and is it safe to do this?

Paths and Shells

The paths.system_default file is the same as /etc/paths, but /etc/paths also has another directory: /Users/<username>/platform-tools. This I recognize to be the Android platform tools that I installed at one time.

Similarly, shells.system_default is missing the /usr/local/bin/bash line, but that line is still in /etc/paths. I do remember after an upgrade having to switch from zsh back to BASH, so this makes some sense.

What I don't understand is that in both of these cases, the updated files are still in their normal locations (/etc/paths and /etc/shells), but the files in Relocated Items are missing the changes that I made. My understanding of Relocated Items is that it is a backup changes I made that were replaced by macOS, but this seems to be the other way around.

What should I do in this case to prevent these two unneeded Relocated Items files? I would like to keep platform-tools in my PATH, and also to continue using BASH. Do I need to remove those changes from the /etc/paths and /etc/shells, and re-add them some other way?

Is it possible to limit resource usage by user in macOS?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 02:09 PM PDT

We have a mac1.metal instance in AWS. Configured with 2 users, one for the QA team and another one for Devs. I'm trying to limit the resource usage of the users, so the any of the teams can't claim the full resources of the machine and leave the other team without using the device.

On Linux, there is the /etc/security/limits.conf file, and on FreeBSD there is rctl command, as well as ulimit command with its file /etc/login.conf. If I understand correctly, these only limit resources to processes and not users. On Linux, there is also cgroups.

There is a ulimit utility in macOS, but it seems only processes, and not users, can be configured to limit the resources they use.

Is there another tool to achieve user resource limits?

Wallpaper Not Showing Behind Mission Control/App Exposé or resized Window on only one Desktop

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 01:04 PM PDT

No clue why this is happening (screen recording link): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Cm82c9ApbNU1qF6bjCzITMpnQ00xlvmN/view?usp=sharing

For whatever reason, the desktop wallpaper only shows up when I use the Hot Corner (cmd + bottom right), but not in the background of Mission Control or App Exposé or even when I resize the Chrome Window. Desktop 2, however, shows the wallpaper anytime it should.

I moved all the windows onto Desktop 2, and deleted Desktop 1, and it showed the wallpaper as normally for about 30 seconds. Then Mission Control started showing an empty black square in the spot where Desktop 2 would have been.

Currently running the newest macOS.

Cannot mount remote USB drive over network after installing network switch

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 08:07 AM PDT

My previous home network setup was MBP into the single GbE port on my wireless router, a Mac mini into the 10/100 port. Both talked perfectly to each other - both are running 10.15.7

The Mac mini has an external USB drive called Media 2, and I could mount and use it over the network via the MBP.

Today I installed a GbE switch so that both Macs can talk to the GbE port on the router, and now I can't mount the Media 2 drive on the MBP any more. Everything else works, it's just that external USB drive that I can't mount on the MBP over the network.

I get this box every time:

"The original item could not be found" warningmoun

I can connect to the Mac mini using screen sharing and access Media 2 on the MBP that way. While I'm screen sharing the mini via the MBP, I can copy from Media 2 to the MBP. I just can't mount Media 2 directly on the MBP.

I've Googled around, and the most common solutions - restart the Finder or log out/back in - haven't worked.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

macbook air begining 2015 stuck after change SSD

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 11:06 AM PDT

I have a macbook air from begining 2015 with 120Go. I bought a Transcend Jet Drive 250 SSD (480Go). I did a backup from time machine and placed it on an external hard drive. I installed the SSD and I restart the Mac with cmd+R. I selected the restore from time machine and connected to external hard drive. I found the new internal hard drive. I wait for 40 minutes and my mac restarted automatically. But it is stuck on the black screen with the apple and the loading bar at the end.

Do you have any idea about the problem ? Can you tell me what I have to do ?

Thanks

App no longer available in store. Transfer from old iPhone to new iPhone?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 05:46 PM PDT

I have an app on my iPhone 4S called 7 Second Diet. It is no longer available on the app store. Luckily, it is still available on my iPhone 4S.

Two days ago, I bought a iPhone 6S. The transfer process was relatively painless. Everything copied across, and all the apps started downloading, except 7 Second Diet.

I still have the app on my iPhone 4S. I am looking for a way to transfer it to my new iPhone 6S.

iTunes used to let you save your apps to your Mac, but they have removed this feature in iTunes 12.4.1.

With iOS 9 or later, apps will not sync or transfer to iTunes via Transfer Purchases. If you would like to download your apps to your iTunes library, make sure to turn on Automatic Downloads for your iTunes purchases. You can also download past purchases. Source.

I tried a third party solution called iMazing and while this allowed me to copy the 7 Second Diet app off my iPhone 4S and onto my Mac as an .imazingapp file, it was unable to copy the app to my iPhone 6S. It gave a message saying I had to download the app from the app store to the phone before restoring it.

I also tried the download your past purchases technique in iTunes 12.4.1, but the app does not show up there either.

Does anyone have any solutions? Most solutions I can find only, including here on the Apple Stack Exchange, are out of date and not compatible with iTunes 12.4.1.

External USB Audio not being picked up by Macbook Pro

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 10:01 AM PDT

I've just bought the brand new 13" Retina Macbook pro. I'd like to hook it up to my USB DAC (An Audio Engine D1) When I plug in the USB to the Macbook it doesn't pick up anything. I've restarted the laptop to no effect. Nothing is being displayed in the Output section of Sound in System Preferences.

The DAC is supposed to be plug and play and has been working fine on my Windows machine for years.

How can I set up external audio on a Macbook Pro?

Can't send using Mail. I get "The SMTP connection to server "smtp.gmail.com" failed."

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 07:42 AM PDT

I've tried answers given on this site. Mail>Preferences>Account>Edit Server List etc. Tried re-entering the information (which is unchanged and correct.) Default ports are 25, 465, and 587. Changing to 465 made no difference.

This is happening more and more frequently, and then suddenly it'll correct itself. Extremely frustrating. Right now the list shows both servers are Offline. Why that should be, I don't know.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Giles

How to re-open a Messages conversation?

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 06:53 AM PDT

So I can close a conversation in Messages on my Mac and it handily disappears. I can't seem to figure out how to re-open that conversation manually (as opposed to getting a new message in that conversation, that is).

Closing means on the left panel of Messages. Hover over a person. An X appears in the middle of their "card" on the right. Click it. This closes the conversation and does not delete it.

enter image description here

Does anyone know if reopening these conversations is possible?
