How do I remove the 'restricted' flag from a file without SIP?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 03:09 PM PDT

I downloaded macOS Installers 10.13.6 and 10.14.6 via softwareupdate, and the InstallESD.dmg files are protected by root, and are restricted.

FYI: the flags on the file are: -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel restricted ..., I checked using ls -lO

How do I delete the files WITHOUT disabling SIP (majority of answers here, others don't work), because I feel like going through the effort of disabling SIP just to delete one file, and then restart your mac is unnecessary.

How can I switch chats in Messages with the tab key?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 03:10 PM PDT

I have gotten a new M1 MacBook Air. On my old MacBook, I could use the tab key to switch from the messages text-entry to the list of chats on the side, then use the arrow keys to move between chats. However, now every time I hit the tab button it just adds a tab into my chat box. I checked through the settings and menus and could not find anything related to this feature. How can I get normal tab-key use back?

Outlook app in windows not showing shared calendar in app, works in web version when we click "show shared Calendar"

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 01:52 PM PDT

Here is the case

Brett has shared his calendar with Amanda who is his VA.

Brett@abc.com (Brett's email) Info@abc.com (Amanda has configured this email)

Now when we are looking at Shared cal on the web there is an option on the left side bottom to say show "Shared Calendar" and it will show all events relating to Brett when we click on radio button next to brett shared cal.

However, In outlook app on windows computers, we have configured info@abc.com as an account and it does show its own calender without issues however we also want to show info about brett's shared calendar in the same calendar just like it shows on web.

Basically, we want info@abc.com to have its own calender and events but also want to show brett's calender so VA can see and possibly make appointments when needed.

I hope I have been able to explain this clearly. Thanks for your help in advance.

3uTools Bind AppleID Unknown login error.(-7)

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 01:13 PM PDT

I just successfully jailbroke my iPad "MD524FD-A" (4th generation 2012) in the hope to upgrade it to the latest IOS so I can still install apps I need like Google Home and Firefox. Now the problem is that I cannot bind my AppleID to 3uTools for Windows, which is necessary to manage my apps on the device. This is a problem more people seem to have, but after research I cannot find any working solution. The official 3uTools website says that two-factor-authentification needs to be disabled but I confirm that this is the case. Still I'm getting this "Unknown login error.(-7)"

Anyone had any experience with this 3uTools software Binding problem or any alternative solution to install "unsupported" software or upgrade IOS to the latest version.

How dangerous is 'sudo hdiutil eject -force /Volumes/path' for filesystem integrity in terms of cache flushing and open file integrity?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 08:58 AM PDT

I find myself having some trouble sometimes with ejecting volumes normally. Usually this seems to happen with volumes that really don't (or shouldn't) have any files open that are non-negotiably being accessed or used. For example, these are usually volumes that have neither any open documents nor any files that should be being accessed by anything other than Time Machine or Spotlight.

Usually a sudo hdiutil eject -force /Volumes/path will resolve the issue, but I've recently had a friend raise a concern about whether or not a -force ejection might not flush any caches and perhaps not finalize writing data to the disk when given the -force directive.

Is there any definitive information or testing in this regard so we can know with certainty what occurs here when -force is used with eject?

Attempted to replace ~/Documents/, now can no longer access it from Finder

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 07:51 AM PDT

I wanted to move my Documents directory to a different hard-drive and create a symlink in my home directory, so after copying the contents, I did

sudo rm -r Documents

The command did not show any errors, but the directory also was not removed. I assume it was automatically recreated by Finder or some other process.

Afterwards, I can still navigate into the directory from the terminal (using cd), but I cannot not open it in Finder. When I double click, nothing happens.

I realize now that I probably should have made the symlinks in the other direction. I would like to restore the Documents directory to working order. How can I fix it?

Does iOS allow apps to auto-launch by themselves in the background? [closed]

There is an app on my iPhone that I have not opened since my phone last restarted. Can this app have launched and run by itself without my action?

Other info: The app is a 3rd party app downloaded from App Store.

It does not have permission to send notifications.

Accelerate spleeter on m1 mac

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 06:23 AM PDT

I'm using spleeter to separate audio into different stems. After many tries I get it working with tensorflow-macos using tensorflow-metal plugin. I assume that it is being run on the GPU.

However, I saw that on spleeter's GitHub page, it states that Nueral Mix Pro uses spleeter in the backend, so I tried it. Neural Mix Pro separated the same audio track much faster (2-3 sec vs 10+ sec), and it seems like it used the neural engine based on output of powermetrics (non-zero power consumption of ANE and unchanged CPU and GPU power consumption).

I still want to use spleeter because I hope to train the default model with vocaloid stems to separate vocaloid songs better (which currently does not work at all). Is it possible for tensorflow to use ANE for processing? Is the speed difference solely due to using GPU vs using ANE or is additional optimization/processing needed for this kind of increase in speed?

External SSD Corrupted

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 04:58 AM PDT

I have been downloading a (legit) torrent file to my external drive, and left it overnight, then I woke up and found unable to connect to my mac anymore on its own, and I have been trying every solution I could find on the internet and it wasn't fixed

SSD: Samsung Evo 970 inside Sabrent Enclosure (so it is external)

Computer: Macbook Pro 2018 with T2

I will show you the results of sudo gpt -r show /dev/disk2 below

gpt show: /dev/disk2: Suspicious MBR at sector 0 gpt show: /dev/disk2: Malformed MBR at sector 0 gpt show: /dev/disk2: Malformed MBR at sector 0 gpt show: /dev/disk2: Malformed MBR at sector 0 start size index contents 0 1 MBR 1 1953525167

and the result of diskutil list

/dev/disk2 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: FDisk_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk2 1: 0xEE ⁨⁩ 1.0 TB disk2s1

I have no idea what to do to fix this, please advise.

PS: I don't care about the data on it, just want the NEWLY PURCHASED drive to work again.

PS2: I also have a windows machine at my disposal, if that helps in anyway.

Connecting a Apple Thunderbolt Display 27 inch 2016 to a HP Elitebook 840 G8 via HDMI or USB-C or any active adapter?

Is there a pre-installed GUI text editor that can edit html files without entering WYSIWYG mode?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 10:16 AM PDT

I'm looking for something similar to windows notepad. textEdit exists, but opening a *.html file with it will instantly treat the code as rich text and add a bunch of other markup to the document the moment you save.

I'm excluding terminal editors here (vi, nano, ed, etc).

textEdit can fit this purpose, but only if we rename the document to have a .txt extension before editing and then only renaming it back to .html afterward. Looking for either a setting on the software or a separate (already installed) GUI tool entirely.

How would you automate clicking on an online page with Applescript? [closed]

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 11:23 AM PDT

I want to Select the inbox folder name on Gmail (On google Chrome) using applescript.

The conundrum is that I know there is a script where you can tell an app to click on a picture, URL, a link, a website title, or a website's product to go to that product or to the next page... But I am coming up with nothing, (I am still new to scripting and automation but keen to learn how it all works)

here is the skeleton of what I have seen in an example online for the clicking script for a webpage:

A user used Xcode to find the exact element hierarchy name of an online page and was able to tell AppleScript to click the (icon, picture, name, profile.) I understand that it will vary from the webpage and app but for now, I have tracked down the element that I want to click for step 1 = The "Inbox folder name" (to go to the emails in that folder)

try

tell application "Google Chrome" activate end tell tell application "System Events" tell process "Google Chrome" set frontmost to true delay 1 tell ("Webpage?") tell Window 1 tell group ("webpage window title") tell scroll area 1 tell UI Element ("(123) gmail website tab title") tell group 1 tell group 4 tell group 7 tell group 2 tell group 1 tell group 1 tell group 1 tell group ("labels") ? tell group 1 tell group 5 tell group 1 tell group 1 tell group 2 tell UI Element 1 Click "Name of email Folder" Text ? end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell end tell

end try

Now, this script looks ridiculous but I have seen something like it. Any help or assistance to clean up the script or correct it to actually simplify what I am even trying to do on this first step is appreciated.

Thank you for any input!

Is there a hotkey to instantly change the monitor to a specific brightness?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 09:14 AM PDT

There are too many scales on brightness. Apple even allows users to press Shift+Option+F1/F2 to fine tune at a smaller step. However, I want to take a giant step. I want to press F1 to jump to 25% brightness, press F1 again to 0%. I don't want to use a slider. Using a hotkey in the keyboard is much quicker.

Is there such an app?

How can I restrict Searches in iBook on my iPad to only the content in my Library?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 08:42 AM PDT

I have been using iBook as a songbook so have hundreds of documents. If I search for a keyword because I can't remember the exact song title, I get lists of hits off the web instead of what's in my Library. I used to be able to restrict iBook searches to just my Library. It doesn't help that iBooks no longer integrates new stuff alphabetically either. Or by Recent, or any other remotely logical system I can identify.

Κeyboard shortcut to switch to a specific input source

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 06:04 AM PDT

For a multilingual user, with 3 or 4 everyday-use languages, is it possible to press a keyboard shortcut to change to a pre-set language?

For example, CMD+1 will be English, CMD+2 will be German, CMD+3 will be Russian.

For my needs, the specific shortcut or specific language is not relevant, but just want to avoid the frustrating sequential press of the regular language switch keyboard-shortcut in order to achieve the needed input source.

Also, if it's possible to find some solution which is not a keyboard shortcut, but for example a trackpad gesture - it will be fine.

Do not allow bluetooth devices to wake computer in Monterey

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 11:25 AM PDT

I have a pair of bluetooth earphones that are able to connect to multiple devices. For certain reasons, I would like to not connect to the computer while it is sleeping (e.g. in my backpack, on my desk while I'm in a different room and more).

This was previously possible by going into System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced… and unchecking "allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer". However, this option apparently was removed in Monterey.

Is there a way to bring back this option despite it not appearing in the preferences pane?

Autolaunch of Safari

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 05:03 AM PDT

Safari is not my default browser. Something is launching that browser without any window, right in front of me. Because it's only showing up in the dock, I have no clue it's launched. I don't know why it's happening.

Anybody know why this might be happening? I can't leave my computer in Safe Mode for a week (as was suggested elsewhere) and I don't want to start another user on this computer.

Is there a way I can be notified when it starts up? I looked into Shortcuts but they don't have Automation like iOS.

Truly odd behaviour. I need to fix this. Any insight appreciated.

Open `Something.app` with Rosetta using the terminal

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 09:05 AM PDT

Let's say I wanted a command line function to open up Xcode (or really, any app) under Rosetta.

For command line utilities, I can do: arch -x86_64 UTILITY but that doesn't really extend to full applications. Are there hidden launch arguments that I can pass to open in order to force a Rosetta instance?

Mac Mail search not working after updating to Big Sur

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 06:46 AM PDT

I've recently updated from macOS 10.15 to Big Sur.

Generally everything works, apart from the search tool in macOS's native Mail.app: when I try to search for an email, phrase, contact etc, half the time i get 0 results, or the search query does not impact the results eg nothing changes / is search for.

Ive got multiple email accounts setup in mac mail. Some gmail, some google apps for business, some IMAP provided by 3rd party web host.

The accounts / mailboxes range in size from c. 1GB - 20GB and there is one large mailbox of c. 90GB

The problem is most pronounced on the gmail / google apps for business accounts.

This never used to happen on 10.15 (or other previous versions of Mac OS / OSX for that matter)

Any ideas?

What i have tried to date :

  • rebuilding the accounts as per user Jaume's suggestion
  • deleting the accounts and re-adding them

In both instances this helped seemed little a first, but after a while the issue was back to where it was before. If i was to speculate i would say its almost as if the issue is caused by one of the following :

  • mac mail not caching the emails so when you search its running a full search of the mail server

  • mac mail not indexing the emails correctly

Will AirPods Max play low-latency audio over USB connection to Mac?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 10:33 AM PDT

Given AirPods Max connected via a USB-C to Lightning cable to a Mac - will it be able to play audio with (relatively) low latency over the USB connection?

Playing audio over Bluetooth has too high latency for my purpose (in the range of 175 ms). I know lower latency (in the range of 10 ms) audio is possible with the Lightning to 3.5 mm cable. However, I would like to be able to connect it to my Mac via USB directly.

An indication of whether or not audio playback works at all over USB would be great if it is not possible to quantify the latency in general.

How can I kill and/or restart all wifi processes?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 12:03 PM PDT

My MacBook (Big Sur) has a problem about once a week when it stops being able to access the internet. Why do I think this is a problem with the Wifi processes? When I go up to the Wifi symbol in the top bar (the one that shows the signal strength), if I try to turn off the Wifi with the slider it just ignores it and keeps showing full signal strength (not greying them out). Trying to select another Wifi router just ends up with it spinning, more fiddling eventually makes the machine hang. The only solution I've found is restarting the laptop, but that takes forever as every app running refuses to restart until it's been able to talk to the network (that isn't there). Eventually it says my computer restarted because of a problem. It's not the router as other laptops are fine, they keep running, it's just this one.

So I'm hoping to find a way to avoid a full restart - is there a way to kill the processes that handle the Wifi?

p.s. someone already asked this question, but no-one answered it exactly, they gave an answer on how to type something in the terminal to turn the wifi off and then on again. I've tried that, the command doesn't complete - the command just hangs forever, and even control-C doesn't bring it back.

Major High Sierra - iOS-14 sync issues

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 11:07 AM PDT

Everything went well when I upgraded from iOS 12 to iOS 13, except that some iOS-macOS High Sierra synchronizations stopped working, or stopped working in full capacity.

Before upgrading to iOS 14, I'd like to know. What apps will stop working (as) well between iOS and a macOS MacBook that cannot be upgraded beyond High Sierra. Is the list announced by Apple? Have you seen a list compiled by reporters?

Update

As much as I'd love to see examples of good dual-OS apps written by independent developers making it possible to do a bit on macOS, continue from iOS (under the same appleID), then return to macOS, etc, the only good ones I've seen and use are the ones written by Apple.

So to make the question specific. Does upgrading to iOS 14 break any of the following?

  1. Notes, e.g.:
  • Add a shopping list on macOS. See it on iOS when you're shopping
  • Take a photo on iOS. Add the photo to a note. Pick up the picture on macOS.
  1. Photos, e.g.:
  • Add photos to your list of favorites on macOS. See them on iOS.
  1. FaceTime, e.g.:
  • Receive a phone call on iOS. Answer with headphones on macOS.

Upgrade Swift without upgrading MacOS X

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 11:44 AM PDT

I am currently using Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6. I cannot upgrade to a more recent OS version as the business applications I am using for WFH will not work.

The default swift installed is 3.1. I want to upgrade to Swift 5 without upgrading my OS X. I cannot upgrade Xcode as it needs the latest OS X.

Is there a way to install swift 5 as a standalone using homebrew or other methods?

Column width and document margins don't add up

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 01:06 PM PDT

I am sure this question has been asked many times, I just couldn't find an answer on the web.

I am writing a letter (I started with one of the Pages templates). Now I'd like to increase the width of the body of the text.

So I set the right Document Margin to 0; that increased the width a little, but I get nowhere near the edge of the paper.

I've got a paper size of A4, which has width 21 cm. Looking at Format / Layout / Columns, I see that the column has a width = 14.5 cm. Left document margin = 2.5 cm. But 2.5 + 14.5 = 17 cm, not 21 cm!

Where is the rest of the width? Why can't I increase the body text width further?

All hints and insights will be highly appreciated! Best regards, Gabriel

PS: Apple Pages version = 10.0 (6748), macOS Catalina (10.15)

Can you recover a deleted message or chain of messages from iPhone?

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 07:28 AM PDT

I see all of these software that claim that they can recover messages deleted from your iPhone. Do they actually work? For example, if I received 2 text messages from my friend and I immediately deleted them. Is it possible to recover them?

Sending commands from TextWrangler (BBEdit) to the terminal

Posted: 27 Jun 2022 05:58 AM PDT

I want to send commands from TextWrangler (or BBEdit) to the terminal. Even if I found this, I don't understand how that works since I'm brand new to Unix and running Applescripts.

tell application "BBEdit" set the_selection to (selection of front window as string) if (the_selection) is "" then set the_selection to line (get startLine of selection) of front window as string end if end tell tell application "Terminal" do script with command the_selection in window 1 end tell

I saved an Applescript that looks like this: enter image description here

Now, what I think is to put the script in the TextWrangler Scripts Folder: enter image description here

  1. But then, how do I send commands to the Terminal.app?
  2. How can I press cmd + enter to send a line from TextWrangler to the Terminal?

If I just replace a TV with Macbook Pro, does it work? I haven't tested it yet. Please give me some suggestions. Thanks.
