mail app changing the automatic text in replies and forwarded emails Posted: 20 Jun 2022 11:21 AM PDT When you reply to an email (in the Apple Mail app on osx), the original email text is prepended by a line: "On Jun 20, 2022, at 9:36 AM, ... wrote:" How can I change this text? More specifically can it be changed based on the account I am replying from? I work in a multi-language environment and I use different accounts to communicate with people with different languages. Can't click to allow giving permissions Posted: 20 Jun 2022 10:33 AM PDT For many apps, I can't give them permissions. This prompt pops up But I when I click on it, both buttons don't do anything, and it just stays there, until I restart the computer. I've read that this could be due do some apps having control of the screen, and I've disabled both amethyst and hammerspoon, but the prompt stays there. I also cannot manually give Emacs permission, since Emacs doesn't show up under Security and Privacy, under the Reminders section. I believe I started having issues after the previous system update. What is the cause of this and how do I fix it? |
Posted: 20 Jun 2022 08:53 AM PDT I have a 2017 MacBook Pro 15 with a fairly new battery. One day it just suddenly switched off with 80% battery remaining and when I switched it on (or tried to) it said the battery was empty. Since then the MacBook switches off randomly while reporting a full state of charge and when I do plug it in to charge it, it charges from 0% to 5% - 15% then it jumps to 100% all in about less than 15 minutes. I found this command ioreg -l -w0 | grep Capacity and it showed me something interesting. Apparently, the battery is made up of three cells each at about 4.35V when fully charged... the peculiar thing is that the reported voltages of one cell differs from the rest. eg... (4216mV, 3521mV, 4210mV). The MacBook usually switches off when the faulty cell has less than 2800mV. (When on low power mode and screen brightness at minimum) So I figured the reason my MacBook swithes off while it reports > 80% battery is because one of the cells is way more depleted than the rest, then when the battery voltage drops below the minimum (I think around 11.2V) to run to electronics then it switches of here's a sample output of ioreg -l -w0 | grep Capacity As you can see the battery is quite new (cycle count = 12) and the faulty cell, "CellVoltage"=(4214,3276,4223) Can any please help me fix this issue? The battery lasted about 6 hours with moderately heavy use which was perfect for me to outside to the park or a coffe shop and code there instead of being stuck in the four walls named my bedroom. I think I need to find a way too either charge only the depleted cell or to discharge the full cells. I'm hoping to get a software solution as first preference, or I can right my own code to manage the charging if software like that doesn't exist and my last option is to open up the MacBook and manually discharge the other two cells which I don't think is a good idea... Or maybe I have made the wrong diagnosis and there's a different solution to my problem. I have tried reset ing the SMB and NVRAM with no luck. |

Can I generate a standalone binary package from a HomeBrew, MacPorts, Fink source? Posted: 20 Jun 2022 06:43 AM PDT The idea is this: Have a dedicated Mac for building the ports. This Mac has HomeBrew, or MacPorts, or Fink installed. Compile a port on this Mac, and produce a binary package that can be distributed to other Macs (of the same architecture). The distributed binary should function on the target Mac without HomeBrew, or MacPorts, or Fink ever being present. For clarification: when I say "produce a binary package", I don't really care about the type of that "package". It does not need to be a proper PKG. I am happy with a tgz or zip archive as well, as long as it contains everything delivered for the right directories for the tool to work fine (including config file, sample, man, libs, etc) and nothing more. Sources and headers are not needed to run the tool, so those should be exluded from the package if possible. Manually assembling all the necessary files for such a package is something I would not attempt. So I wonder if there is a recipe in any of HomeBrew/MacPorts/Fink to do something like this. Any pointers or suggestions are welcome. |
How do I type "X feet Y inches" so that Spotlight suggests unit conversions? Low volume while speaking on iPhone during a call Posted: 20 Jun 2022 04:13 AM PDT When I make a call the speaking volume is very low on my iPhone. This is without using any external or internal speaker. (Just the "top, little" one.) I noticed that any app notification has a normal volume if I receive it during a call. So, I think, this shouldn't be a hardware error. (Because, if I'm not in error, this sound also comes from the little speaker, during a call.) However, the voice level is maxed with the side buttons. Are there other places where I can change the audio volume of the speaking during a call? |
Is there a way to save the current state of opened files on Preview, or otherwise? Posted: 20 Jun 2022 03:57 AM PDT Say I opened a couple of images and placed them on my screen, resized them, zoomed in on a couple etc. (eg. To do a comparison between images.) I'd like to save this current state (exact location I placed on my screen, exact dimensions, exact part I zoomed into etc.). I'd like to save the state like a file. So I can open new images and do the same and save them, then reopen a previous file/state. Is it possible? If no, how else can I achieve this goal? |
How can I restore all Reminders data from a backup of macOS Monterey? Posted: 20 Jun 2022 05:25 AM PDT I wanted to mark all reminders in a group as not complete. On my iPhone I selected the group and pressed 'clear' thinking that meant 'mark as not complete' but no, that means delete. @#$%^&* Who writes this stuff? Is there a rubbish bin from whence I can restore? No. Because I'm syncing reminders btw Mac, iPhone and iPad on iCloud, those reminders are now gone from everywhere. Anyway, the Apple support web site says that I can restore reminders from iCloud — great! but, only if I'm still running an old version of Reminders, not 'Upgraded Reminders', which I am. So, if I upgrade, I lose the restore function. Again, who writes this stuff? But wait, I take regular backups — to the point where I have hourly snapshots, at least for the last 24 hrs, so I should be able to restore from there. I have looked and searched but I can't find which files the reminders are stored in. I don't see an export / import feature so I wonder if restoring my Reminders from a backup of my Mac HDD is possible? Many thanks in advance and please forgive my sarcasm — it's been a frustrating morning. Running Monterey 12.4 |

How to escape mouse selection in Terminal.App Posted: 20 Jun 2022 05:42 AM PDT I am using a mouse enabled application in the terminal but now I want to copy some text. By this I mean, I want to select text in the terminal with the mouse and copy it with Command+C to copy it to a different program. However, selecting does not work because the application captures the mouse and does other things. So, e.g. dragging in vim will select text in vim but then Command+C does not work for copying. On other systems this can often be fixed by holding shift. Is there a similar thing for Terminal.App? |

use an iCloud+ «hide my email» apple ID forward address as an alias to send mail Posted: 20 Jun 2022 10:44 AM PDT Hide my email is the neat feature introduced by apple earlier, and since then I have been trying to figure out how I can use those forward addresses as sender address when composing emails on the iPhone. The adressess don't appear when tapping on current sender address when composing an email in apple mail. I figured I should try to add one of the «hide my email» forward addresses manually in The use of «hide my email» if I can't send or reply an email is limited to signing up for newsletters. Any insight on this? edit: also in the browser 2nd edit: I did some further digging and found a related feature in a recent team up between 1password and fastmail called "masked email" and integration. Fastmail supposedly provide the ability to send from the randomly generated addresses. 3rd edit: an extra feature with icloud+ is custom domain as icloud email. you will need to update DNS records at your domain registrar/host with 4th edit: don't know why I didn't notice this feature before, but apparently «Hide my email» feature seamless reply to email, only not a send from option when composing email.

Notification to ring like the phone [closed] Posted: 20 Jun 2022 09:04 AM PDT I have been trying to get one of my apps to notify me the same way the IMessage or phone does but I have not had much success in figuring out how to do this. I want it to persistently vibrate or ring the same way the phone would. This normally wouldn't be a problem but for a job I had just gotten they use an app for scheduling and its notifications are of particular importance. The iphone's standard notifications for anything other then the main services only seem to vibrate or beep for like a second before going silent and I want this to last at least 5-10 seconds longer. Sadly, as far as I can tell, its not possible with the default settings and I need 3rd party software to do this, but I have not had much luck in finding anything that would do this. Any help is appreciated. |
Big Sur terminal sometimes 5-second lag, 16in macbook pro Posted: 20 Jun 2022 06:06 AM PDT update 5 issue seems to still be happening for another user (see comment in answer below) under macOS 11.2.3. update 4 Looks like this issue in terminal is no longer happening after updating to 11.2.3. However, there's now a similar issue in Google Chrome where having multiple tabs open and then clicking a tab does nothing, but then moving the cursor will go to that tab (the expected behavior is obviously to go the tab immediately upon clicking the tab). The "Battery" settings under System Preferences now has a checkbox to enable/disable discrete graphics switching (not sure if it was there before) but disabling switching causes the Chrome tab problem to go away. update 3 This just happened to me again when my macbook was at 100% battery, and plugged in. Is it possible that it's not due to the graphics switching? Update 2 Looks like this is a known bug with the hybrid graphics of my MBP, as the answer below points out. Here's another thread. Interestingly, I haven't noticed any issues in other apps like Chrome or Safari that much, just in Terminal. Update I notice that the lag seems to happen only when running on battery. Additionally, I've observed in even when not pressing return, for example when using Vim and just navigating around with original I'm using the default terminal in Big Sur using 2019 16 inch macbook pro. Downgrading 2020 13" MacBook Pro to run macOS Mojave Posted: 20 Jun 2022 08:17 AM PDT Can I downgrade the 2020 13" MacBook Pro to run macOS Mojave? This is the Model Id=MacBookPro16,2 - with Quad-Core Intel Core i7 of 2.3 GHz; sold in Europe in July 2020, that comes with Catalina pre-installed. Unfortunately, many of my legacy software (in 32-bit) cannot be made to run under 64-bit. Some of my hardware relies on 32-bit software. Are there hardware components in the 2020 models, which are NOT supported in previous? If one can downgrade, would that work with a time-machine backup? or would one need a complete re-install after erasing and re-formatting the disks, from a Mojave.ova file? |
Remote Desktop Connection from Windows to Mac Posted: 20 Jun 2022 09:54 AM PDT I have a Mac Mini I use occasionally. I use RealVNC to connect to it remotely, from my Windows computer. VNC works well, but it lacks a few useful features. The two main features I'm missing is the ability to match the Mac's resolution to that of my PC screen, and the ability to transfer files between both computers. Is there a simple way to install an RDP server on the Mac (it can be a paid solution)? Or perhaps there is another solution? Thank you. |
5 Vertical pink lines - Imac 2011 - Won't boot up Posted: 20 Jun 2022 11:05 AM PDT My mac was running fine one day then suddenly powered off and tried to restart itself. Upon restart it was stuck with the loading status bar and the screen had 5 vertical pink lines across it. Having done some research it is most likely a GPU solder issue which can be fixed by reapplying thermal paste or by 'frying' it in the oven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nB172HJeM0w Although some have said they have fixed it via safemode/updates etc What causes 5 pink bars on 27" iMac (2011)? Just wanted to ask on here before I go ahead with the baking method as a last resort. -I cannot get my mac to boot at all and cannot get in to safe mode. -I created a bootable USB stick and that would also not load using Apple+R. -Cannot boot from my(external HDD which I normally use instead of the internal drive/os -The pinks lines do go away when it attempts to enter recovery mode, which does give me some glimmer of hope that it's a software issue and not hardware. But it just gets stuck on a totally blank white screen before it gets to recovery mode. I guess one thing I haven't tried is putting an actual DVD in the drive, but I threw those out years a go so would mean sourcing one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I start trying to take it all apart! It's an old model too, and I really only use it as a display for my newer MBP. So not worth paying to get it fixed Thanks! |
