iPhone: Disable vibration for all notification except phone calls?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:16 PM PST

I'm trying to make my phone silent and only vibrate if I get a phone call (via Telegram/Signal/Whatsapp/etc). The only issue I came across is when someone sends me a message through an app such as Telegram, my phone vibrates. I ONLY want my iPhone to vibrate for phone calls only. With my Android, it's possible.

edit: I do not want to leave my phone on silent mode since I will miss phone calls if anyone calls me. I want my phone to vibrate for phone only or else I will get distracted if someone sends me a message (via Telegram/Signal/Whatsapp/etc)

Wirelessly mirror iPad screen to MacBook?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 09:44 PM PST

I've heard of the software "Reflector" being able to do this. And I know I can also do this though screen sharing during a Zoom meeting. But I want to be able to do this natively, without having to pay for proprietary software, and without having to jump through the hoops of always having to set up a Zoom call.

What are my options?

Virtual Mac boots in verbose mode -- why?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:51 PM PST

Some time back, I used Parallels Desktop on a Mac running macOS Catalina (10.15) as a host system to create a virtual machine running OS X Sierra (10.13). Everything ran fine, if a bit slow. Then I migrated my VM to VirtualBox, following the instructions here. Everything continues to work fine, with one very minor glitch: whenever I start up the VM, it boots in verbose mode. (The original Parallels VM did not do this.) Any idea why this is happening, or what I can do to fix it?

Is importing just the CA certificate to Keychain Access enough for trusting certs issued with that CA?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:23 PM PST

I've created a PKI with easy-rsa. I create keys for websites and sign them with my CA certificate. I imported the CA certificate into Keychain Access, clicked the cert name, and specified "Always Trust".

The websites with keys signed by this CA certificate still cannot be accessed (invalid certificate errors). I tried importing one of the site public keys into Keychain Access also, but I still got the error. Am I missing a step?

Would adding a Mac mini to my MacBook Pro set up help with processing bandwidth?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 10:29 PM PST

I have a MacBook Pro 16" Intel variety that I got from work. I use two 32" monitors and the screen on the laptop. I recently added a RØDECaster Pro audio interface and a Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro. It seems that I have hit the limit of what this laptop can do all at the same time.

Could I add an M1 Mac mini to use with the MacBook Pro and split the processing power and RAM of both to bear the load? Any advice on if and then how would be greatly appreciated.

The root user won't disable on my Mac, any ideas why or how to fix it?

Posted: 04 Mar 2022 12:34 AM PST

When I try disable my root user using Directory Utility/Terminal it doesn't disable. When I enter:

dsenableroot -d

it just returns "Failed to disable root user".

Not sure what on earth is going on, can't log into the user either.

Are locally-stored Filemaker Go databases included in an iPad backup?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 04:39 PM PST

There are two options for backing up an iPad:

  • icloud
    • Backup the most important data on your iPad to iCloud
  • This Computer
    • A full backup of your iPad will be stored on this computer

Does either of these options backup a locally-stored database within Filemaker Go?

Hearing impaired and iPhone

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 03:33 PM PST

A friend of me got a new iPhone 13, but is now disappointed from the sound of the iPhone. The ringtone isn't loud enough as well as the vibration is too subtle.

Are there any settings/tricks which could help with this?

Loudness is on max. level and flash light setting is on. But that isn't enough ... Don't know if special ringtones could improve this and imho Apple should provide such ones.

Are there special third party devices, which could help with this? I don't mean a new hearing aid device, but e.g. a bluetooth loudspeaker which runs all the time and can increase the sound if a call comes in. I know the article from Apple, but that isn't helping me exactly in this case. Is there a cheaper option than buying an Apple Watch?

XProtect - Apple claims they do signature based antivirus but how do we know?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 06:21 PM PST

I read this Apple Support page that they use XProtect to scan for known viruses.

I cannot find any evidence that XProtect is getting new definitions or scanning anything.

Where can I find the logs and if it's in unify then how do I persist them?

How do I know Apple really scans for known malware and isn't just making that claim?

How to input characters with HEX codes ending with "0"?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 03:33 PM PST

I've recently upgraded to Monterey, and while I normally use the Unicode HEX keyboard to input accented/special characters, it ignores characters whose codes start and end with "0", making it impossible to input "a with grave accent" (U+00E0), but "ᄐ" (U+1110) and "é" (U+00E9) work.

Seems like a bug, and is a big nuisance.

How to block all Software Update Notifications in macOS?

Posted: 04 Mar 2022 01:09 AM PST

The Software Updates in System Preferences are all disabled. In spite of this macOS continues to show Notification Banners in Catalina (and Big Sur) which some users accidentally click to initiate an update. I want to stop macOS from showing all the Software Update notification banners to prevent accidental updates. Yet I still want to be able to manually initiate software updates when desired.

Previously the following has been suggested:

  1. softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Big Sur", but this is not available any more as a command option and would block only major upgrades not minor or security upgrades AFAIK. (Only available in High Sierra up to Catalina with Apple Business Manager enrollment, Apple School Manager enrollment or Enrollment in a user-approved MDM)

  2. Moving com.apple.SoftwareUpdateNotificationManager.plist from /System/Library/LaunchAgents to /System/Library/LaunchAgentsIgnored, but in order to make these changes, one must boot from another disk, otherwise System is read only. Also the notification will reappear if Software Updates is selected in System Preferences. This is cumbersome as it means a lot of steps including additional reboots when updates are desired and manually initiated.

I am currently testing another proposed solution which is to install the Lulu application firewall and then to block /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/Resources/softwareupdated.

Blocking and re-enabling softwareupdated for manual updates would be less cumbersome than disabling and re-enabling the system protected LaunchAgent, but I am not quite sure, if it will actually prevent the notifications from appearing. Who can confirm that this works in the long run?

Are there any other options to accomplish this?

Deleted /usr/local/Frameworks and others while uninstalling Homebrew

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:07 PM PST

I am running macOS Monterey, 12.2.1 on my Mac. I had installed Homebrew a couple of years ago and had not updated it in the past few months. Now as I tried to run brew doctoror brew cleanup or brew update I came across various errors of permission being denied (like Error: Permission denied @ apply2files while trying brew cleanup). So, I decided to uninstall Homebrew with a plan to reinstall it later. I ran:

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/uninstall.sh)"

At the end of the uninstallation, I was told:

==> Homebrew uninstalled!  The following possible Homebrew files were not deleted:  /usr/local/.com.apple.installer.keep  /usr/local/Frameworks/  /usr/local/Homebrew/  /usr/local/bin/  /usr/local/etc/  /usr/local/gfortran/  /usr/local/include/  /usr/local/lib/  /usr/local/opt/  /usr/local/remotedesktop/  /usr/local/sbin/  /usr/local/share/  /usr/local/texlive/  /usr/local/var/  You may wish to remove them yourself.

A bit absentmindedly I ran sudo rm -rf /usr/local/.com.apple.installer.keep and the same for /usr/local/Frameworks/ and /usr/local/Homebrew/. Then I noticed what I was doing and stopped short of deleting /usr/local/bin. My /usr/local/bin contains

dvipdf gslp ps2pdf13 eps2eps gsnd ps2pdf14 font2c lprsetup.sh ps2pdfwr gfortran pdf2dsc ps2ps gs pdf2ps ps2ps2 gs-X11 pf2afm sage gs-X11-Yosemite pfbtopfa texdist gs-noX11 pphs texdistmgr gs-noX11-Yosemite printafm unix-lpr.sh gsbj ps2ascii wftopfa gsdj ps2epsi gsdj500 ps2pdf

Why would Homebrew want me to delete them? What will happen to the directories I have already deleted in /usr/local/? Thank you!

Disable Fn + C OSX Monterey using Karabiner elements

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 09:43 PM PST

I'm an emacs user. I personalized my .emacs' file to uses Fn+C + C (C-c C-c)to evaluate buffers (more confortable for me); however, OSX Monterrey uses Fn+C to open Control Center, so I cannot run my emacs buffers. I didn't find any solution to disable Fn+C, so I'm trying with Karabiner-Elements, but it seems this only remap the key combination. Is it possible to remove the Fn+C combination for any OSX instruction and free it to be used only in emacs? Thanks

Here my config for the keys meta and control:

;; Change Meta for function (setq mac-function-modifier 'control) (setq mac-control-modifier 'meta) (setq mac-option-modifier nil) ;; free key alt

How do you get rid of the notification to login to iCloud in Software Preferences?

iOS 15.3 Disable Music Autoplay in VW

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 05:06 PM PST

I have an iPhone SE (2020), and recently bought a 2019 Jetta with the low-end infotainment system. There's a single rotary volume knob on the infotainment system, along with buttons ("Phone," "Radio," "Media, "App") to select input sources. This is not an AirPlay system; it connects via Bluetooth or USB.

I like the phone to connect automatically when I enter the car with the phone in my pocket, so I leave the infotainment system turned on. The infotainment system turns on and off with the ignition key. This works as expected.

The undesired result, however, is that the iOS app Music autoplays when the Bluetooth connection is made. Usually I prefer silence in the car. I can turn the playing off, either on the infotainment system "Media" screen or on the iPhone itself, but the "off" status does not persist; the next time I get in the car, the dance repeats. If I rotate the volume knob to turn down the audio, then I can't hear the other person if I receive a phone call.

There's no setting available on the car's system to change this behavior, nor do I find one on the iPhone. I could remove all the songs in the Music app, but then I'd be unable to listen to songs in the car if I did desire to do so.

Is there a way to accomplish these conflicting goals?

AppleScript - Click coordinates stopped working

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 06:03 PM PST

I use a web-based program that lacks batch actions. This creates the need for repetitive clicking. I wrote a script on Apple's Script Editor that took care of that, it is very simple and worked perfectly. However, as of yesterday it no longer works, for some reason.

I'm using Brave browser, but even outside the browser, clicking in general seems to no longer work. I've set different coordinates to click icons on the desktop and whatnot. Nothing works.

This is the script:

set loc1 to {400, 440} -- x, y coordinates set loc2 to {1350, 700} delay 2 -- time for me to minimize scripts and click on browser repeat 60 times -- :) tell application "System Events" click at loc1 --clicks on a button to open item from a list delay 2 -- time for item to open click at loc2 -- clicks the approve button delay 5 -- time for the list to update end tell end repeat

This is the feedback I get under the replies tab of the Script Editor

tell application "System Events" click at {400, 440} --> missing value click at {1350, 700} --> missing value end tell

This worked until about a week ago. I did not update anything, and did not change the script. I'm really baffled that it just stopped working. Surely I'm missing something.

I'm running MacOS Catalina 10.15.7, on a 2017 13" MacBook Pro.

Thank you

*edit: Just to be clear, I would appreciate either an alternative method to solve this problem or a possible explanation for why it stopped working. Cheers

GarageBand is unusable - "Maximum number of tracks (1000)"

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 09:00 PM PST

Only weeks after getting it, I can no longer use GarageBand on my brand new MBP 14" M1 Pro (macOS 12.1) because any attempt to create a new project immediately results in the error "Maximum Number of Software Instruments - You have added the maximum number of software instruments tracks (1000)". I also get this error when attempting to create a new track in any existing project. (Obviously I have nowhere near 1000 tracks in any of these projects). I also sporadically get the message on launch: "A plugin has reported a problem. Please quit and restart GarageBand". These two issues began at the same time.

After doing some of my own research I tried restarting Core Audio via sudo killall coreaudiod and sudo launchctl start com.apple.audio.coreaudiod and restarting, but this has made no difference. I do not have any external audio interfaces or third-party plugins.

Can anyone help me?

How to reconcile number of photos and disk space used on MacBook Pro vs new iPad Pro

Posted: 04 Mar 2022 01:01 AM PST

I have a newly set up iPad pro, 3rd gen, 11 inch that we got new and set up via wireless side by side transfer. Upon plugging it in to MacBook pro Big Sur 11.6, i noticed that the pictures folder on the MacBook shows (left side below on screen shot of Get Info) 34.16 gb and 13,085 items while the iPad (right side of screen shot) shows 18.48 GB and the iPad has 6,695 photos and 71 videos showing synced from the computer. I have deleted the synced photos, soft reset ipad and restart MacBook and re-synced with same results as shown below.

Questions:

Which is right? Why the difference? How do i reconcile the difference?

I have compared manually almost all of the computer folders to the iPad synced folders and have only found about 5 missing picture and .mov files for a total of about 200mb. thank you

new

In the photo folder on the Mac I sync with there are "iPhoto library", "iPod photo cache", "Photo booth library" and "photos library folders". If I exclude those and "get info" on the remainder of the folders, the no. and sizes matches almost exactly to what is being synced to the iPad. The culprit for the greatest difference is the iPod photo cache for about 15gig. The 4 folders are included in the total on the Mac but do not sync to the iPad, hence the difference.

Ethernet-usb isn't recognized by macbook, no ethernet option under Networks

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 02:38 PM PST

I have a 16-inch Macbook Pro 2019 with Big Sur (11.4) and an Ethernet cable that I plug into an UTP-USB adapter (TP-Link UE300) which then goes into a dongle that brings it to USB-C. Not the prettiest set-up, and it also doesn't work. According to Apple I should just go to networks and pick Ethernet, but I don't have that option.

No Ethernet

Now what? (I've checked and the Ethernet cable works)

keep MacBook Pro from powering on unexpectedly

Powered off 2016 15" MacBook Pro running Big Sur unexpectedly powers on. Happens whether lid is open or closed. Seems only to happen when plugged in.

"Wake for network access" is disabled in System settings.

Computer gets hotter waiting on the login screen than it ever has.

Disable Screen Recording prompt from bluetooth game controller (maybe Big Sur only?)

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 06:05 PM PST

I have an 8bitdo bluetooth controller that I use to play games on my Macbook with the latest Big Sur. I think since the upgrade to Big Sur, sometimes when I am using the controller Mac OS will break fullscreen to pop up a series of confirmations about whether I want to allow different apps that are currently running to record the screen. I have to click through each one to get back to my game. This happens whether I'm actually playing a game/have Steam open, or if I am just sitting on at the desktop. It happens when I have the controller connected to the Mac and press Select and Start at the same time, or sometimes Select and the Special/Meta button. It doesn't happen every time I press these combinations, I do have to press them multiple times to get the issue to repeat, but it happens very often.

Is there any way to disable screen recording or this "shortcut" or whatever it is? I almost never want to record my screen, so turning off the feature would be fine if possible.

Bootcamp - Windows 7 Installation Help

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 10:02 PM PST

I have a mid 2011 21.5" iMac with High Sierra, the disk drive I think has an issue, it writes to DVDs but can't read. I successfully burned Windows ISO to a DVD+ disk but the drive reads it as blank DVD, I confirmed this by using another pc.

I went to the USB drive way, I modified the BootCamp plist file to enable USB drive, I successfully created windows installation drive with BC, sat the partition, but when the Mac boots, it goes to a black screen, with a message "no bootable device". I couldn't find any way to read from the USB drive, I used both USB 2.0 and 3.0.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Why has the basic search function on external drives stopped working for one particular drive?

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 08:05 PM PST

I use several NTFS external disks with my Catalina Mac (for PC file exchanges). None of them are Spotlight-indexed, and that's fine as it is not necessary: macOS has no trouble seaching the disks without Spotlight.

All of a sudden one of the external disks stopped being searchable. macOS is unable to find any files. On my other external NTFS disks there is no problem with the macOS search function. (and Spotlight is not enabled there either)

(Rebuilding the Spotlight index is N/A as Spotlight is not used.)

I have the feeling something in my macOS is messed up regarding that particular external drive. Pehaps a setting that got corrupted? Is there such a thing as a .plist or so for a drive that can be deleted and recreated?

What could be the cause of the basic search function not working on an external USB drive?

iPhone: Set recurring reminder to get off an app

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:07 PM PST

Instagram has become a major distraction for me. I will spend hours upon hours mindlessly scrolling, allowing what little time I could have spent doing things I enjoy to slip away. I don't want to delete the app since I sometimes use it to message people. Is there a way, perhaps using Shortcuts, to check if I'm on Instagram, if so, set a reminder (e.g. "Get off!") to pop up every 10 minutes, and once I'm off, delete the reminder?

How to move/hover mouse (not click) over a button on Safari by using Applescript

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 04:01 PM PST

Can anybody tell me how to write an Applescript that can move or hover mouse over a Button on Safari? I've successfully made an Applescript that can click to the button but I don't know how to make the mouse just move there, not clicking. Because I need to download some images from a website that only appear when you hover your mouse over that button (that button can't be clicked).

The website I want to get information (HTML Element) when execute the script: https://shopee.vn/Bút-line-đi-nét-chuyên-nghiệp-SAKURA-PIGMA-MICRON-12-size-(0.03-Brush)-BÁN-LẺ-i.22061868.886461468

My sucessfull click-to-the-button Applescript (This click to the second image on the left):

tell application "Safari" do JavaScript "document.getElementsByClassName('_3ZDC1p')[2].click();" in document 1 end tell

or:

to clickClassName(theClassName, elementnum) tell application "Safari" do JavaScript "document.getElementsByClassName('" & theClassName & "')[" & elementnum & "].click();" in document 1 end tell end clickClassName clickClassName("_3ZDC1p", 2)

So can you tell me how to hover mouse over the button (but not clicking) in a similar way of script like these above? Notice the Button "1.0 Graphic" in the website above is faded, that means it can't be clicked but once you hover your mouse to it, the image on the left appear, i want to get that image so bad. The url of that image only appear when I hover the mouse cursor over that button "1.0 Graphic". I already know how to make script downloading image from URL. I just need to have a script that can do hovering mouse to that button ("1.0 Graphic") so the image can be seen to grab the url. Thanks you!

MacBook Pro high CPU with external monitors

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 03:28 PM PST

I recently ordered two 4K monitors (LG 27UD88). I connected them using Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Adapter cable to my MacBook Pro.

When I have the monitors connected, the CPU load is very high with fans running at 5500-6000 RPM and a processor temperature of 54°C. This does not seem healthy to me. It's kernel_task which is using absurd amounts of CPU (sometimes spikes up to 600%)

Things I've tried so far

  1. Before I used to have a high CPU load as well (with the additional monitors connected), but that got resolved after following the instructions in this article, CPU usage is too high with Yosemite and an external monitor, kernel_task spikes to 600%+.

  2. Disabling X86PlatformShim.kext

  3. Resetting the SMC.

This all seems very odd to be. I have a maxed out MacBook Pro which can't handle two monitors?

Here is the system configuration:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) Processor: 2,8 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2 GB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB Storage: 500GB Flash Storage

Information from sensors:

enter image description here

UPDATE #1:

Here is the information on the GPU load. It seems that the GPU load is high, but that the processor of the AMD Radeon is not used. I'm currently looking into this, if you have any suggestions on how to make more use of the AMD Radeon GPU please do.

enter image description here

I do have Automatic graphics switching turned off (this should increase high-performance graphics).

Also the system preferences tell that the AMD Radeon is being used for the external display. Though the iStat data suggests otherwise.

enter image description here

Update #2:

I've installed gfxCardStatus and put it to discrete only. Looks like the AMD Radeon GPU is actively being used. This does not make a difference.

enter image description here

Update #3:

I've ran iStat for a while now. Looks like the CPU has many spikes, even up to 90 degrees. This would obviously trigger the fans to start blowing (also the MacBook itself feels hot near the processor). Looks like the average temp at the moment is 70 degrees.

Here is the CPU frequency:

Reminders no longer separates items by line

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 03:15 PM PST

Having just upgraded to iOS 9, I've noticed that Reminders is no longer able to take a copied list like this:

bananas
oranges
cereal

My wife emails me our grocery list in this format every week and now I can't use Reminders to check off items as I find them in the store.

How can I ask her to format the list and/or paste it so that each item will be separated as unique items to be checked off one-by-one?

Switching between windows of one application in multiple spaces

Posted: 03 Mar 2022 07:41 PM PST

I know you can use command + ` to switch between windows in one program in one space.

But this is only in the one space, if you have other windows from the same App in different spaces ... it won't switch to that space.
