Why is LANG environment variable wrong in shell? Posted: 03 Mar 2022 03:09 AM PST When I start a Terminal (in Monterey 12.2.1) my LANG is When I start a shell, or any other sub-process that reads environment, from GUI Emacs it is set to As I understand it, Terminal, with "set enviroment variables on startup" activated in the preferences, will construct LANG from your "Language & Region" settings. There I have Swedish as the primary language, English as secondary and Sweden as the Region. But obviously there is some similar mechanism when reading the environment from a GUI application, which for some reason gets it wrong. In a Terminal all other locale is also set to Why is this, is it a bug or can I fix so that LANG is set correctly also in GUI environment? |
Lock multiple instances of app on multiple desktops Posted: 03 Mar 2022 02:44 AM PST I'm using a macbook with two (usb c) screens connected to it and that works wonderful. Keeping my apps arranged however is terrible. I'm a programmer and my layout is very simple:
I arrange them all like that and can easily swap between projects. Until I close my macbook, and/or take out the external screens. Lately, more often than not: I cant find how I can lock them, is there anyone with a solution? Extra info:
I dont mind an app, or command of some sort to reset everything back to their arranges places, the part that bothers me is that I have to drag ~12 app instances back to their workspace over and over again. |
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 11:02 PM PST When I started using Apple Music about a year ago, I have disabled the "Add Playlist Songs" to keep my library clean. It worked quite good.. My library is not polluted with hundreds of partial albums. On the other hand, I have lots of playlists which has songs from various albums. But now, sometimes when I am too lazy to select an album or a playlist, I just want to play my entire music in shuffle mode, because that also allows me to remember a forgotten album/artist/playlist etc. and find something interesting to listen for the next few days. But unfortunately, when I choose "Library -> Songs", Music app only shows songs which belong to the albums in my library. Songs in playlists are not included there. Consequently, I can't play all the songs in my library + playlists in shuffle mode. The settings option "Add Playlists Songs" only works for the songs you add after you change the setting. So, it does not help to go into settings and turn this on. An udesirable solution could be to delete all my playlists, and then turn "Add Playlists Songs" off, and then add the playlists again to my library. But that is too much work, and would also void my original intention, which was to keep my library clean (no partial albums). Any suggestions are welcome. |
Posted: 03 Mar 2022 01:02 AM PST I notice that with every new iOS update, many of the Experimental WebKit Features either are no longer relevant, or newer EWF's appear out of nowhere. Some of the features that were initially toggled ON by default randomly end up off and placed in a different position than before on the list. I've been searching all over, and I just can't seem to find the correct guide for which features to leave on or cut off. My anxiety tells me a few of them could create problems just from being toggled off when it should've been on…and I'd have no idea. Does anyone have an updated 2022 version with all of the WK features and explanations and discriptions for each? I'd greatly appreciate it. |

User privacy with Apple Business Manager Posted: 02 Mar 2022 04:52 PM PST I got a new Macbook that is managed by a company with Apple Business Manager. Other than working for this company, I want to use this device for my private stuff too, like freelancing. This would mean storing some projects and applications on the device that I don't want to share with a company that owns this Macbook device - I want full privacy and control over my data. After trying to find answers myself, I didn't find anything good, only a few red flags like that company which owns the device could remotely wipe it, and If I got it correctly, also browse my installed apps. It would be very helpful to know what extent of privacy and control I have over this managed device? Thanx for reading my question. |
"You Have Custom Permissions" on my external USB Posted: 02 Mar 2022 04:25 PM PST 2018 Macbook Pro running Catalina. I have an external 1TB USB drive (Samsung) partitioned into two equal partitions, where I keep mostly media files for work (videos I edit, some graphics, etc.). I recently (week or two ago) had some oddities with permissions in my home directory, so I went into Recovery and did the full permissions repair routine, along with reinstalling the OS (keeping all user data). Everything then looked fine and life went on, until today. I noticed that for some reason, Preview would not allow me to edit a .png from my external drive, and save the change. It required that I make a copy of the file, and then it would save. I looked at permissions (Get Info) on the external drive, and it just says "You Have Custom Permissions". Both partitions in fact, state this. Clearly this isn't going to work! This is my personal laptop, I'm the only user account on it, ever, and I'm the admin. But I'm not allowed to change the permissions as I seem to not have permission to do so! I've found numerous posts online about this issue, but not that don't include some very different elements. How can I get full permissions access again on my external partitions? I really would prefer not to brute-force this via chown etc. I would just like the OS to once again recognize that this drive and its partitions are mine, and everything on them should be under my user account control. |
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 04:24 PM PST I just got an Apple watch and selected a face that happens to have a small Earth showing my location and the daylight/nighttime distribution in my hemisphere. This made me wonder if there are ways I can display other astronomical information, specifically what planets are currently in the sky and where they are roughly. Examples of this kind of information can be seen in in-the-sky.org's planetarium mode for example, as well as many other planetarium programs and websites: It is quite easy to generate a simple small database from which these positions in the sky can be calculated given lat/lon and date/time so if there are (easy) ways to script graphics on the watch's screen I might be able to attempt that manually, but I have no idea how accessible the screen is for such a project, and there may be easier ways of getting this. Question: I'd like to see the positions of the Moon and planets in the sky on my Apple watch. What are my options (if any)? note: There is an Astronomy watch face available, but if I understand correctly, it shows a crude flat 2D top-down map of the solar system only. |
Keys in some GUI applications are mapped wrong Posted: 02 Mar 2022 03:58 PM PST So, using a USB Ansi keyboard. I've tried this with several keyboards so I'm reasonably confident it's not keyboard hardware at issue. Using text applications, as in iterm or Ulysses, everything is fine. Checking the keyboard via In some GUI applications, like emacs, the keys are mapped to something else. CMD-X should be M-x, but it's actually H-x; the spacebar isn't a space character but instead is some mystery character that is mapped to . In Twitter, some number of tweets work fine; then it no longer recognizes the space bar at all, soeverythingcomesoutlikethis. I've tried different keyboards, as I mentioned. I've done the new keyboard process to no avail. I have reset the NVRAM — or at least I think I have as there is little feedback to indicate success. I'm frankly kind of at wit's end. I'd rather not reinstall the OS but that's the only other idea I've got. Help? |
Sharing full resolution photos Posted: 02 Mar 2022 03:36 PM PST My friend has and iPhone 12 max and I don't. Using her phone, she selected the photos and videos and shared them to me by creating a link. Using the link, I could download the photos in a zip. All except 1 photo was 3MP (2048x1536) and one was 12MP. All videos except two were 720 MP4 except two which were 1080 MOV. When I tried downloading just one photo, it would say it was downloading a HEIC though it would give me a JPG. How can she share everything full resolution? Searching around, people say sharing a link is the way to share full resolution but that isn't working. |

Posted: 02 Mar 2022 01:06 PM PST After a long sojourn in the Chromebook universe --where the game is now afoot, see Neverware and Google for details-- I needed to add an admin account to an orphaned early 2000's iMac. Took a bit of looking up and RTFMing, but got'er done without too much trouble. But while in single user mode, AKA sh, I found that the usual bash up arrow to paste in the last command wasn't available. I did find a few hints here and there, and some old information at https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/7908799/xcu/fc.html, I'm posting this question in hopes that someone can provide the Cliff Notes version to using command history in single user mode. How can I stop getting notifications about signing into my Google account? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 02:27 PM PST I've tried configuring my laptop to sync my calendar and contacts, but not my mail, with my Google account. Now I've started to get notifications asking me to log into my Google account, but when I do so, MacOS is asking for permissions related to Gmail, in addition to the expected Google Calendar and Contacts. These are permissions I don't want to give, especially the permission to permanently delete all of my emails. Is this an all-or-nothing situation? Or is there a way to give MacOS only the permissions it needs to connect the services I've configured to be connected? |
Help diagnosing repeated kernel panics Posted: 02 Mar 2022 11:47 PM PST I've been experiencing repeated kernel panics on my 2015 Macbook Pro. Sometimes the fans start spinning really loudly before the panic, sometimes not. Sometimes the screen jut goes black, sometimes it glitches in crazy ways (see picture). Making Gmail the default mail app made sharing via Email disappear from Photos app? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 06:08 PM PST I would like use the "Share" menu in Photos to share photos via email. This was by default bringing up the Mail app, but I don't use that and would prefer to have things simply open in Gmail in my browser (Chrome). I was able to configure GMail as my default mail reader by letting GMail set itself up as the default mail handler in Chrome, and then going to Apple Mail and configuring the "Default email reader" to "Google Chrome", like this: Great! I thought I was all set. Unfortunately, when I try to use the "Share..." menu in Apple Photos, "Email" is no longer an option. It has simply disappeared: Is there any way to get the "Email..." share option to show up when using Gmail (via Chrome) as my default mail reader? |

How can I find the metadata of a file in Scanner app? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 05:07 PM PST I am a teacher, and I am trying to verify the date and time when a student took a particular photo. The student has an iPhone (unknown model and OS version) and used the Scanner app by Luni to take the photo. The student says they can't find the date and time on their own, and I am not able to gain direct access to the student's phone due to covid-19 restrictions (the teaching is being done remotely). I don't have (and have never used) an iPhone, but I assume that if the photo still exists on the phone there is a way to recover the metadata. Could someone point me towards a step-by-step tutorial for how to find a file's metadata either in this particular app or in whatever file manager iOS has built in? To be clear the student is entirely cooperative, but seems to not be very technically knowledgeable (or even comfortable with technology), and my total inexperience with iPhones renders me unable to provide detailed, specific instructions. I have tried finding an iPhone emulator I can run on Windows, but I can't seem to find one which is free (or freemium) where I can easily see how to get to the app store. Edit: If I get instructions for how to find metadata in a file manager, I will also need instructions for how to determine through the app what the location of the file is. |
Can't find AirPlay on macOS High Sierra Posted: 02 Mar 2022 01:00 PM PST I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro with macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 installed. I have just found out that my Smart LG TV with webOS has AirPlay incorporated so, I would like to mirror my MacBook Pro screen on my TV. However I can't find AirPlay on my MacBook. Already searched for some solutions on Google but the only option that I found was to go to Screen Settings on System Preferences and turn on "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" which it is. However the AirPlay icon doesn't appear in the Menu Bar. Does anyone know how to solve this? Is my MacBook too old to support AirPlay? |

Entire "Users" folder is missing when booted into Recovery Mode Posted: 02 Mar 2022 05:54 PM PST I posted this in the Apple Discussions forums, but have yet to get an answer that applies to the depth of which this situation currently exists. My Mac's hard drive (running Mojave) suffered some corruption recently, and I found myself unable to boot into the system. I am able to boot into Recovery Mode, and my intent was to rescue the important data sitting in /Users/(my username), but to my surprise, the entire /Users/ folder is just not there when I try to access it via Terminal. Steps taken:
What I have tried:
I can only come up with two possible conclusions:
In the meantime, preparing for the worst, I have ordered an external drive enclosure so that I can pull the drive out of my computer and view its contents on another computer. I am very hesitant to reinstall MacOS right now, because IF /Users/ has been compromised in the corruption, I don't want to do anything further that will prevent it from being recovered somehow. In other words, I am trying not to write any new data to the drive at all. Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance. |
