MacOS - Scale screen on custom resolution Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:04 AM PDT PS This is not a question about the basic functionality of scaling or changing the resolution of the screen. The screen:
Original problem: For some reason, I want to connect the display through an HDMI cable, not DisplayPort, and since the MacOS by default sets the resolution to 4K (max allowed res) and scales it to "look like" 1080, the refresh rate is locked at 30Hz (which is quite horrible) So from the settings, I can set a custom resolution to 2k (the one with "low-resolution" label, since the other 2k option only changes the DPI), which then allows the screen to run at 60Hz, but since the screen is only 23", 2K makes everything too small Or I can set it to 1080 (the one with "low-resolution" also) and everything should be fine (both refresh rate and UI size), but the screen looks really bad and washed out, apparently my monitor doesn't support this resolution very well. So this takes us to my question: Can I set a custom resolution, AND make it scale to look like another resolution? For example, change the real resolution to 2k, and change the DPI (scaling) to "look like" 1080? |
iMac that slow - is that normal? Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:37 AM PDT I have a iMac Retina4K from the end of 2015 with 3.1GHz Quad-Core i5 and 8GB DDR3 on 21" with a second monitor attached, and a HDD-disk. macOS is Catalina and I am running Firefox, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator most of the time. Since I upgraded to Catalina my Mac is soooo slow that starting up in the morning until anything really runs (i.e. I am able to click on an app) takes up to 10 minutes with no applications opened yet. Opening up Illustrator works in 6 of 10 times, else it just freezes. If opened it does work okay though. Firefox freezes also on a regular basis. I never open up more then 3 applications at the same time, have no widget etc running and I got hundreds of gigabyte diskspace left. I get it, that this isn't the newest device but shouldn't the OS and some really simple task like opening up a browser be "there" in less then 5 minutes? My question though is a different one: If I'd set up/reinstall the Mac completely new with Catalina (as I am bound by Creative Cloud to it) should that speed up my described routine or is the current scenario just what I can expect from the combination of that hardware/software combination? |
remindd: constant 100% CPU load on my two Macs Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:52 AM PDT The remindd service on my two Macs runs at a constant 100% CPU load. Having a look at the console, two errors are reported over and over again (strangely with one emoji being differently every time):
Somehow, this appears to be related to my iCloud reminders – I have tried turning off the iCloud reminder sync, which — after a reboot – stops this madness. As soon as I turn it back on again, it continues. This error occurred on my recent MBP, now continues to occur on my new MBA, and also occurs on my iMac, which leads me to believe that something is amiss with my centrally stored reminders. Any idea, what could be done here? Thanks! |
Cannot ping/access mac in same network Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:47 AM PDT The title says it all, i am going insane... tried all of that and none where working

I can ping my other macbook from the machine i am trying to access The one i need, is not pingable or accessible from anywhere. iPad OS Photos.app using ~5GB but has zero photos Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:41 AM PDT I have a 32GB iPad so storage space is always at a premium for downloading shows and such. So I decided to get rid of iCloud Photo Library and delete all local photos which was using up a ton of storage. However now I've unsynced and deleted everything (opening up Photos.app shows zero photos, also nothing in Recently Deleted) but in Settings.app's Storage section it still shows the Photos app as using almost 5GB storage. I've tried all the usual things like rebooting and even giving it a few days (thought it might be slow to delete things) but nothing. Still using 5GB after a few days and reboots. Any ideas? |
My mac jumps to the window on external monitor when I switch space in the laptop Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:32 AM PDT I have a MBP connected to an external monitor. When I'm on the laptop (a window on the laptop is active) and I swipe right or left with my 3 fingers to switch to another full screen app on the laptop, a window on the external display is activated! so If I start typing, characters will be shown on the other window on the external monitor, not on the app I have switched to on my laptop. Is there a way to fix this so that Mac does not automatically jump to another window on the monitor when I switch on the laptop? Specs:
Update: Strangely, this only happens with iTerm when it is in "split-screen" mode with another app (Slack). When I make iTerm full-screen this does not happen. |
Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:54 AM PDT I deleted Keynote because it didn't update. Then I tried to download Keynote again, but it doesn't. The screen still shows 'update' sign which I saw before Keynote was deleted. How can I download Keynote again? |

Extra display in system preferences arrangement hidden Posted: 31 May 2021 08:24 PM PDT I recently purchased an ultra wide LG monitor, 49WL95C-WE. I plugged it into my MBP 16" via USBC to display-port. My current macOS is Big Sur 11.2.3 and I see that there are 3 displays in the arrangement tab. Two of which I can select and see the red border (native display on laptop and the LG monitor) highlight the window and one that I cannot see. I don't know if by this display not showing up it is a product of the dual controller kvm switch of the monitor. When I go to the Displays tab in the "About the Mac" I can see two different LG HDR DQHD Displays. I want it to go back to a single profile as currently windows get lost in the extra display and I can't easily migrate the windows back to the actual display I have. |
Is it possible to control new window position of Brave Browser? Posted: 31 May 2021 09:28 PM PDT I am using Brave Browser version 1.24.86 Chromium: 90.0.4430.212 (Official Build) (x86_64) on Catalina 10.15.5 Using a large 4K display with the browser on the right side, it's quite annoying that new popup windows appear top-left. |
Upon restart, mac blasts fan and then boots up saying "your computer ran into a problem" Posted: 31 May 2021 05:01 PM PDT Whenever I restart my macbook, it exits all my windows and then right as it's shutting down (or maybe starting back up) it blasts the fan very loudly for 1 second, and then boots up saying "your mac restarted because of a problem". Is this a hardware or software issue? Should I be worried or can I safely ignore it? |
How to see other tabs when watching something fullscreen on chrome (mac) Posted: 31 May 2021 03:58 PM PDT I use a mac and whenever I play Netflix or Youtube fullscreen my other tabs disappear if I'm using multiple tabs on one window. Does anyone know if there's a fix to this? Or maybe I'm just not supposed to be multitasking while watching stuff lol. |
Keeping a process always running even when M1 Mac is sleeping Posted: 31 May 2021 10:43 PM PDT I would like to keep a process "always on" as some specific iOS apps (such as navigation or music apps) are able to, even when the Mac is put to sleep. Since it's an M1 Mac it seems to me that the hardware itself should easily enable it, but I can't find any way to do this ? Thank you |

Macbook air M1 - Repeated kernel panics because of display/external hub Posted: 31 May 2021 03:38 PM PDT I've used my Macbook air M1 for about three month and already got about 15+ crashes/reboots. Whenever this happened, I hadn't been doing anything special, nothing that was related to any installed software. I have noticed that other people are describing similar problems online, but I am not an expert, and I am very scared that these crashes might damage my computer in a permanent way. All in all my questions are:
I am quite sure that the problem is related, even caused, by the interaction between my computer and my monitor (or the external hub to which it is attached). I have tried different monitors and the problem keeps coming (even though less frequently with a more recent monitor). I am appending the report below. |
I’m converting PDFs to ePubs using calibre, it is very slow can you suggest faster alternatives? Posted: 31 May 2021 04:48 PM PDT Problem: converting pdfs to epubs using calibre is very slow. It has takes 2 hours+ for 40mb pdfs to convert to epub I'm using calibre to convert from PDFs to ePub format for books but it is exceedingly slow. Question: Is there a faster app I can use that you have tested vs calibre and found the performance much better? Research: I looked online for alternatives but they all seem like ads pushing their product, so I thought it best to ask the community who won't have a financial incentive and will have experience. System: MacBook Air 2018 model Processor: 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Storage1: 128GB PCIe-based SSD OS: Big Sur latest update (yesterday) |
Macbook Air 13" (2017) keeps shutting down Posted: 31 May 2021 11:09 PM PDT I'm aware this has been asked before, but didn't find for my specific model. Anyways, the problem started a couple weeks ago when the battery was below more or less 50%, but in the last couple days this worsen and it turns off when the battery is at any level below 80%. When I connect the charger and start again, it shows a battery level of 60-70%, sometimes the battery level jumps weirdly from one level to another, like 42% to 64%. I'm aware that the battery has had a lot of uses, my cycle count is around 740 cycles, and system report notifies "Service Recommended". Nevertheless Apple page says expected life for this battery model is 1000 cycles, and really didn't expect to start failing this early and with this extreme behavior. Here comes my question, will a calibration of the battery hopefully solve this issues? (until obviously it reaches >1000 cycles). Tried resetting SMC (as here), didn't work (but also I'm not sure how to verify that I did the reset correctly). I purchased the macbook new in march 2019 in official premium reseller (since in my country Apple does not have direct representation). Also I know that I might have to replace the battery, but I live in an EME country, and do not know if this is going to be very expensive, so in the short term it's not an option. Thanks! PD, here's my battery system report: If helpful, I noted that "Full charge capacity" changes sometimes dramatically when I check it from time to time (this is the same symptom as the battery level jumping from one to another completely different, I think) Exact model: MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017) Running on: Catalina 10.15.7 |
Spotlight can't open a folder inside ~/Documents/ Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:43 AM PDT I use Spotlight to open folders, but quite often the Finder opens on It might have happened for the first time after a system update, a few weeks/months ago. Can I merge 2 Apple ID/iTunes accounts then change 1 to a teen account Posted: 31 May 2021 04:02 PM PDT Finally making the switch from Android to Apple. Never before an Apple user. My daughter uses one of my old email addresses for her iTunes and Apple ID account, she is 14. I stay logged onto that email for her iTunes account and some of my other contacts. Unlike previous questions on here, I do not want to create a new child account, because from what I've read apps and items purchased will not transfer. I want to know if I create a new Apple ID / iTunes account using a new email can I connect or merge the two accounts and change hers to a child/teen account? If so, how? If not, any advice or thoughts on what I should do or not do? Should I just leave it as is and monitor her account as usual? I do not want her to loose all her purchases. |

MacBook Pro Unable to Connect to QNAP NAS Posted: 31 May 2021 11:10 PM PDT I am trying to find out why my MacBook Pro will not connect to my QNAP NAS. When attempting to use Finder in macOS to access the files on the NAS, it tries to connect but fails each time. When attempting to click "Connect As..." at the top right of the Finder window, it simply attempts to connect again without prompting you for a username and password as it typically would in the past. Things that I can confirm:

Set up VNC to use iPad Pro with Apple Pencil as a graphics tablet Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:04 AM PDT I work with photoshop in my Macbook Air. I want to use my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil as an input device (because Photoshop for the iPad is still too limited for some tasks). I don't want to use Duet Display or Astropad (already tried and they don't suit me). I managed to mirror the computer screen into the tablet using VNC client, but the tablet behaves as a trackpad:
How can I make the motion of the Apple Pencil around the screen to be exactly reproduced on my computer screen? I mean, when I tap a particular point in the tablet, have it reproduced in the screen in the same screen position? |
Product to overlay MacBook Pro Touch Bar with physical keys Posted: 31 May 2021 08:21 PM PDT Is there any product that you can buy that can be overlaid on the MacBook Pro's Touch Bar to simulate physical keys and hide the actual Touch Bar? i.e, you'd configure the keyboard settings to use traditional non-changing function keys, and then you'd stick some sort of physical button strip on top, and it would function like a traditional Mac Book Pro. |

Keyboard Shortcut :: Remove Google Chrome Bookmark Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:18 AM PDT I keep accidentally typing Command + D in Google Chrome, because I'm used to that taking me to the Address Bar on Windows systems.
