Need to create safari extension, to open the (shared directory) file link in native application Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:23 PM PDT Iam trying to build an safari extension which will access a web page with multiple list of file urls. These URL's belong to the shared directory. These URL's may contain pdf, png, tiff etc file formats. Whether it is possible to open the shared file (example pdf, png etc) in native application. Had anyone done similar type of POC. Please let me know what step i should follow to achieve this. How the url should be load/download in cache so that the files could be open in native application.
Make Preview auto append file extension Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:01 AM PDT I have set the file extension to be shown in Finder settings. When I open a JPEG in Preview, and try to File > Export and re-save it as JPEG for lower/higher quality, the file name's file extension is gone. I have to manually add .jpg in the file name when I save the file. How to prevent Preview remove the file extension? p.s. I know file extension is useless in Mac/Linux
MacBook Air 13" internal display works fine only when connected to an external monitor Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:30 PM PDT My Mid 2011 MacBook Air 13" began to show unrecognized patterns on the screen one day. Not only that, the computer keeps turning itself on and off. I thought the display went bad. Accidentally I found out that the computer including the internal display works fine when the computer is connected to an external display through a thunderbolt adaptor. I also found that the computer can work as expected even when only the thunderbolt adaptor is inserted into the port but the other end is not actually connected to a monitor. This led me to think: the internal display has no issue. The issue causing the display malfunction is related to the thunderbolt port. I can put up with the adaptor inserted into the port as long as the computer works with the internal display. It worked fine this way for a week or so. Today the display began to show the old symptoms again until I connected an external monitor to the adaptor. what could be the issue here? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks. John
| Can't use "open location" when it's part of a longer script Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:29 PM PDT The following script works fine to open a URL in my default browser: open location "https://google.com" However, I've got an existing script to grab a URL from my Terminal window to open it in my browser. When I use this script, I get the error "Expected end of line but found identifier" and the variable for my URL was highlighted: use framework "Foundation" tell application "Terminal" set windowContents to the contents of the front window end tell set windowContents to current application's class "NSString"'s stringWithString:windowContents set fidoRegexPattern to "<PATTERN>" set fidoRegex to current application's class "NSRegularExpression"'s regularExpressionWithPattern:(fidoRegexPattern) options:(0) |error|:(missing value) set matchRanges to (fidoRegex's matchesInString:(windowContents) options:(0) range:({0, windowContents's |length|()}))'s valueForKey:("range") set urlStrings to current application's class "NSMutableArray"'s new() repeat with thisRange in matchRanges tell urlStrings to addObject:(windowContents's substringWithRange:(thisRange)) end repeat -- return urlStrings as list set urlList to urlStrings as list set fidoUrl to the last item of urlList open location fidoUrl return fidoUrl Even if I try swapping out fidoUrl for a URL string literal, I'll get the same error, except it'll say that it found " instead of end of line. Everything else about the script looks fine. If I take out the open location line and look at the return line's results, it gives me the URL I'm expecting. Googling around seems to indicate that I might get this error if there's an issue with the script itself, but I'm not seeing anything. |
Disable kids' access to iOS device after 11pm, but also allow parents to remotely and temporarily enable/disable access? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 02:22 PM PDT Our teenage kids have been staying up too late on their iPhones, so we'd like to figure out a way to prevent them from using devices after 11PM. But we'd also like to be able to have a way to temporarily turn this off, e.g. if we know they'll be out late and we want to enable them to text us. My understanding (correct?) is that we can do everything above via Screen Time, but that disabling Screen Time (temporarily or otherwise) requires physically entering the password on the device. Is there a way to do the disabling/enabling remotely instead? Does Family Sharing do this? If yes, what are the limitations or challenges with Family Sharing for Screen Time control?
Why is Spotlight draining my new M1 MacBook Air's battery? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 01:51 PM PDT I purchased the new M1 MacBook Air 2020 a week ago, and the battery gets drained in about 2-3 hours of browsing the web (I use Firefox). According to my Activity Monitor, Spotlight is consuming 94.02 of my "12 hr Power." Some people have stated that it's Spotlight "indexing" the entire MacBook; I'm not sure if that's fine. Do I visit the nearest Apple store to get my MacBook replaced? Or what do I do? Thanks in advance.
Late 2009 iMac won't boot (mb950b/a) Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:49 AM PDT This one has me beat! I bought a used iMac a late 2009, mb950b/a. the story I got was it was all ok but after a fresh os install it stopped working, he has pics of it running an old os. it will start and I get the apple logo and it tries to start then the status bar fills and nothing, it just sits there at the apple logo and a full status bar. I ran AHT from a usb and it showed up no issues. I created a bootable usb with El Capitan, when I select the usb with bootable usb, again apple logo and status bar. I start from command + R, same apple logo and status bar. I start from N, spinning work and same apple logo and status bar. ive reset everything and same. Ive installed a new SSD and tried to boot via bootable usb, same Ive fitted another SSD from another iMac and again the same I have tried loads of resets, swapping drives anything I can find, but nothing will work. could it be still hardware and if so what? so in short all i'm a getting is the apple logo and a status bar, I can't access startup recovery, Im lost with this one, any help please
Swap red and blue channels in application Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:00 AM PDT I have an old application which renders with the red and blue channels swapped. Is there a way I can use a color filter or display profiles or something else to fix this? I'm willing to use a solution that's either specific to the application or global to the system so long as it can be easily toggled.

| How can I regain write permission on my Time Machine sparsebundle? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:25 AM PDT For my backup I use an encrypted virtual disk on a sparsebundle file that is stored in an external hard drive attached on a router via USB. This file is accessed via samba but for one reason I decided to use the HD directly attached to my mac. So I changed permission to access the file, because previously they were assigned to the user created on the router to access via smb, but I haven't only chmod the directory. I chown it for my mac user. Now when I try to mount the .sparsebundle it mount but Time Machine says it's in a readonly state and I'm not even able to actually read it. I tried to search the web for some days but I wasn't able to find the solution. I tried to force fsck_hfs but below is the result. Anyone can help me? I specify that the physical volume on the external drive is an EXT4 filesystem because the router runs on Linux. Maybe it add information to find the solution. sudo hdiutil attach -nomount -noverify -noautofsck /Volumes/Data/Dati/Time\ Machine.sparsebundle/ /dev/disk3 Apple_partition_scheme /dev/disk3s1 Apple_partition_map /dev/disk3s3 Apple_HFS sudo fsck_hfs -rc -fd /dev/disk3s3 ** /dev/rdisk3s3 Executing fsck_hfs (version hfs-407.50.6). Invalid content in journal ** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. The volume name is Time Machine ** Checking extents overflow file. Unused node is not erased (node = 2784) ** Checking catalog file. ** Rebuilding catalog B-tree. Disk full error ** The volume Time Machine could not be repaired. Invalid content in journal (4, 0) EDIT: Actually it could be also a filesystem problem, not (only) a permission one hdiutil attach /Volumes/Data/Dati/Time\ Machine.sparsebundle/ hdiutil: attach failed - no mountable file systems For testing purpose I attached again the HDD to the router and reenabled the smb share. Here is some screenshot of my setup. The smb share mounted on macos, with the sparsebundle that always mount in readonly The HDD mounted on the homemade NAS (/dev/sda3) The configuration of the Samba share (access -> read and write, even if we cannot read it from the screenshot) The permission settings on the directory mounted on the router EDIT 2: Executed fsck directly from the smb share. I cannot understand the difference but the output is much more verbose: mbp:~ davide.novoletto$ sudo hdiutil attach -nomount -noverify -noautofsck /Volumes/HDD-3TB/Time\ Machine.sparsebundle/ /dev/disk2 Apple_partition_scheme /dev/disk2s1 Apple_partition_map /dev/disk2s3 Apple_HFS mbp:~ davide.novoletto$ sudo fsck_hfs -dyf /dev/disk2s3 journal_replay(/dev/disk2s3) returned 0 ** /dev/rdisk2s3 Using cacheBlockSize=32K cacheTotalBlock=32768 cacheSize=1048576K. | Cannot remove the bootcamp partition whether with disk utility or terminal Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:02 AM PDT I have been trying to remove my bootcamp partition recently. When I run bootcamp assistant, it simply does not recognize the bootcamp partition, and prompts me to create another bootcamp partition. diskutil list: /dev/disk0 (internal, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *251.0 GB disk0 1: EFI EFI 314.6 MB disk0s1 2: Apple_APFS Container disk1 180.0 GB disk0s2 3: Microsoft Basic Data 70.7 GB disk0s3 (free space) 180.3 GB - /dev/disk1 (synthesized): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: APFS Container Scheme - +180.0 GB disk1 Physical Store disk0s2 1: APFS Volume Macintosh HD - Data 138.4 GB disk1s1 2: APFS Volume Preboot 359.7 MB disk1s2 3: APFS Volume Recovery 1.1 GB disk1s3 4: APFS Volume VM 5.4 GB disk1s4 5: APFS Volume Macintosh HD 15.5 GB disk1s5 6: APFS Snapshot com.apple.os.update-... 15.5 GB disk1s5s1 I have tried removing the bootcamp partition manually with disk utility, but it tells me that it failed. Now when I try to remove it again, the '-' button is grayed out, like this: I have also tried sudo diskutil eraseVolume JHFS+ drive disk0s3 But the following message appears: ❯ sudo diskutil eraseVolume JHFS+ drive disk0s3 Password: Started erase on disk0s3 Unmounting disk Error: -69879: Couldn't open disk And the error message Error: -69879: Couldn't open disk appears every time I try to do anything related to the bootcamp partition. By this time my whole disk is just messed up. Any help is appreciated, thanks. |
What should I expect from ANC? (mixed feelings w/Beats Studio 3 Wireless) Posted: 27 Jun 2021 09:19 PM PDT I've recently purchased a pair of Beats Studio 3 Wireless and am trying to understand how ANC is supposed to work & how much sound it is supposed to block. These headphones do not have a passive mode which, if I understand it, means when ANC is off they will actually let all sound from outside leak in (this is a big minus for me but it may be good if used outside). With this pair, ANC off is acceptable only when home alone, otherwise the listening experience is too disturbed. When ANC is on, and someone is listening to a YouTube video on an iPad at 60% volume, I can still hear something that disturbs my concentration whenever the audio I'm listening to makes any pause. Still, if the audio is a continuous song, it is fine, I can listen unhindered. Now for the big doubt: when using them for conversation/phone calls, ANC is useless as every noise outside is amplified even from different rooms in the house any time I'm speaking-that is, I am not listening-. Is this normal for ANC? I am really confused so I am asking if someone with a better knowledge about the topic could shed some light on what I am experiencing. Thank you EDIT: this question is no longer relevant as I studied Beats' & ANC specs for a few days, compared them to many other models and found out they are not responding to my expectations. What I need is a passive noise cancelling pair.
Change the quota size for an APFS volume Posted: 27 Jun 2021 09:04 PM PDT I created one APFS Container for the whole of my external hard drive. I created several volumes in that - some with quotas. I have now discovered that one quota is now too small. I used diskutil apfs list /dev/disk10 to show me the Capacity consumed and the Capacity Quota. How do I change the quota for an APFS volume under BigSur?
Time Machine: Backing up the local drive onto an external AND a partition of that external to another external Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:07 PM PDT My setup: I have an iMac that gets backed up via Time Machine to an external SSD that is partitioned to have storage for Time Machine and for working off a photo catalog in Lightroom directly from that drive (I've set it up this way so I can work off of that Lightroom catalog from my Macbook when traveling as well). What I'm trying to do: is backup that "Photo" partition of the external drive onto another external drive only (I do not want to also backup the local drive there, just the partition of the external drive). I'm not seeing a way to do this in Time Machine — any suggestions?

Conditional formatting when checkbox checked Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:07 PM PDT I am trying to make conditional highlighting accross whole row when a checkbox is checked. I found a tutorial to make this happen, but it doesn't work for me. If you know a better way to do this, please show me how. At this moment I am trying to use formula from the tutorial: Where A3 is the checkbox. When I check/uncheck the checkbox I see in the bottom statusbar TRUE/FALSE state, but the formula is not working. In the example it's always showing "NOT YO".

Deleting files doesn't free storage on SSD Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:00 PM PDT Recently my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with 251 GB Flash Storage and Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7 started complaining about not enough space left on the hard disk. So I started deleting stuff. But to my surprise that didn't free up memory on the hard disk. Using the Storage Management App I saw, that for example deleting an Application reduced the storage used by Applications, but increased the storage in the category Others. As an example see the first screenshot before deleting Microsoft Word and the next screenshot after deleting Microsoft Word I also looked at the issue using the terminal. Before deleting Word I saw this ❯ sudo du -m -d 1 -c 6632 ./usr 3 ./bin 1 ./sbin 4229 ./Library 0 ./com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots 135562 ./System 1 ./.fseventsd 4657 ./private 0 ./.vol 89408 ./Users 11305 ./Applications 0 ./opt 1 ./dev 1713 ./Volumes 0 ./cores 253506 . 253506 total After deleting Word I got 6632 ./usr 3 ./bin 1 ./sbin 4229 ./Library 0 ./com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots 134207 ./System 1 ./.fseventsd 4663 ./private 0 ./.vol 89409 ./Users 9942 ./Applications 0 ./opt 1 ./dev 1713 ./Volumes 0 ./cores 250796 . 250796 total It seems to me that the total of du is reduced by twice the amount, because the \Application folder got smaller, but also the \System folder got smaller, because we also have \System\Volumes\Data\Application pointing to the same directory. I tried to follow tips on the internet like deleting localsnapshots from time machine, but I simply have none. I also tried to rebuild the spotlight index, but it also didn't help. I started in recovery mode and checked with disk util and saw the following: Snapshot is invalid But diskutil still thinks everything is ok and didn't repair anything. What could be causing this strange situation? And what could I do to get more free space finally? Or is my only option left deleting the whole disk and reinstalling everything again?

Wallpaper Not Showing Behind Mission Control/App Exposé or resized Window on only one Desktop Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:01 AM PDT No clue why this is happening (screen recording link): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Cm82c9ApbNU1qF6bjCzITMpnQ00xlvmN/view?usp=sharing For whatever reason, the desktop wallpaper only shows up when I use the Hot Corner (cmd + bottom right), but not in the background of Mission Control or App Exposé or even when I resize the Chrome Window. Desktop 2, however, shows the wallpaper anytime it should. I moved all the windows onto Desktop 2, and deleted Desktop 1, and it showed the wallpaper as normally for about 30 seconds. Then Mission Control started showing an empty black square in the spot where Desktop 2 would have been. Currently running the newest macOS.

Delay in screenshots and cursor issue on MacOS after update? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 01:02 PM PDT I'm running 10.14.6 (18G6032) Mojave on my early 2015 macbook pro. There was some kind of software update in the past week, and I've noticed 2 issues since I updated that I suspect was due to the update. (1) The screenshot option Command + Shift + Control + 4 seems to now be delayed. By this, I mean when you press those 4 keys and release, you get this "target" looking symbol that shows up to select where you want to start the screenshot. This target used to pop up instantly, but now there seems to be a 1 second delay. (2) My mouse cursor seems to randomly disappear sometimes, especially when I go into full screen mode on a video. The cursor still works, but I can't see it on the screen. I have to move the "invisible" cursor to the top left apple logo and click on it, and that makes it reappear. Has anyone experienced these issues?
backupd using massive CPU Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:00 PM PDT Machine info - macOS Mojave, Mac Pro 4,1 with 5,1 firmware. Dual 6-core Xeons, 64GB RAM, 5 internal drives, 1 SSD, 4 HD. I don't want to prevent Time Machine backups, but I'd be happy enough if backupd didn't do local backups. My TM drive is a permanently connected, internal drive. Periodically, backupd will take up so much CPU that the entire Mac halts - even the clock in the menu bar stops [I have it showing seconds]. I also have Activity Monitor open permanently in a corner of one screen where i can easily see it without having to switch to it. This morning I got a halt that lasted 40 seconds & when it finally kicked back into action I briefly saw backupd reading over 1,000% CPU. A second spike ocurred shortly after. Checking the timestamp on the snapshot I got just after & comparing to Time Machine in the menu bar puts these right in the middle of Time Machine's last backup [which I'd already long-suspected.] At these times when backupd is badly slowing the machine down, I see fairly high launchd too, though maybe at around 100% not the 10-core-eating 1000% that backupd managed. I recycled the Time Machine drive about 6 weeks ago in an attempt to streamline things, but the behaviour seems unchanged. Drive is a 3TB Toshiba HD [one of several similar Toshibas in the Mac which all seem to be in good condition] mounted internally. Is there any way to see what's making backupd literally grind the Mac to a halt every time Time Machine runs? Screenshot grabbed just after a couple of big spikes this morning. I was too slow to actually catch backupd at 1000%
Import sound file into Music memos Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:07 PM PDT Is there a way to import an audio file (of either format) into Music Memos on iOS? I want to try to utilize the "automatic" drums of the app on some older guitar recordings. From what I can tell, the drum function listens to a memo and tries to play along, so wouldn't it be neat if we could hand it a recording from another source and tell it "Here, put drums on this"? I've been looking through the iPhone file structure in PhoneView, but I fear I lack the deeper understanding. Otherwise, copying a recording with the right format into where Music memos stores recordings, I imagine one could convince the app that this is a legit memo file. You know?

A screen protector or not for the retina screen? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:34 PM PDT Recently, I bought my very first MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I am hesitating between having a screen protector or not. Some claim that a protector can prevent the retina display from scratch, while others say that one can only get the best out of the retina display without any extra protection. Is such a protector worthwhile? Will the screen get scratched when I use a cloth to clean it, if I do not have the protector?
Remove recent documents history? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 02:13 PM PDT I recently got a MacBook Air and am getting used to the macOS interface... Liking it so far but still relearning how to do some basic stuff. For example, right clicking on VLC, and all the porn I've been watching comes up! Don't want to risk that popping up if someone else is using my computer for a few moments. I've tried setting the Number of recent items under system preferences to none, but vlc still remembers all my filthy video titles! What gives? In windows I could clear my recent documents easily enough, or use a tool like ccleaner to clear system cache, browser histories, recent documents etc with one click. Can you recommend something similar for Mac? (I know the best solution for this is separate user accounts - but would like to be confident that I could pass my laptop quickly to someone at a moments notice without all my recent activity being two clicks away! Thanks for any help.
| How do I set up an IRC server on OS X for my local network? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:45 PM PDT Is there a nice way to set up an IRC server for my wireless home network, running on an old Mac Mini?
