ITunes giftcard from another country

Posted: 16 May 2021 11:24 PM PDT

Okay, so I want to buy a iTunes giftcard for my iPad, but I'm pretty confused. Firsthand, my iPad is from Singapore and I'm in bangladesh right now. Am I able to order a Singaporean giftcard so I can use it here? Or do I have to go to Singapore to redeem my giftcard? I know it's a pretty stupid question but I'm genuinely confused.

Cask 'restclient' definition is invalid: invalid depends_on key: ':java'

Posted: 16 May 2021 09:39 PM PDT

when I using brew(3.1.7) update command to update my computer, shows this error:

Cask 'restclient' definition is invalid: invalid depends_on key: ':java'

then I tried to remove restclient:

/usr/local/Homebrew/Library/Taps/homebrew/homebrew-cask on  master ⌚ 11:20:21 $ brew uninstall --cask restclient ‹ruby-2.7.2› Error: Cask 'restclient' definition is invalid: invalid depends_on key: ':java' (base)

what should I do to fix it? This is my homebrew version:

$ brew -v                                                                                                                                                            ‹ruby-2.7.2›  Homebrew 3.1.7  Homebrew/homebrew-core (git revision 68bbba9239; last commit 2021-05-16)  Homebrew/homebrew-cask (git revision 559cb3b7d9; last commit 2021-05-17)  (base)

force uninstall still now works:

/usr/local/Caskroom/restclient/.metadata/3.7.1/20190625104811.510/Casks ⌚ 11:42:00 $ brew uninstall --cask restclient --force ‹ruby-2.7.2› Error: Cask 'restclient' definition is invalid: invalid depends_on key: ':java' (base)

remove the restclient folder still not work:

/usr/local/Caskroom ⌚ 12:40:16 $ rm -rf restclient

How Do You Force Quit (i.e. Kill/Crash) the Foreground App on iOS Devices Without a Home Button?

Posted: 16 May 2021 07:31 PM PDT

On iOS devices with a home button, it was possible to kill the foreground application by:

  1. Pressing & holding the power button until the "slide to power off" screen appeared, then
  2. Pressing & holding the home button until the foreground app is killed

This would cause the foreground app to exit immediately. I've used this occasionally over the years when a bug in an app was severe enough that a regular "quit" triggered by swiping up on the multitasking view was not sufficient to get the app back into a usable state. It has saved me from having to un-install/re-install misbehaving apps on a few occasions.

I can't find any official reference to the above "force quit" procedure on Apple's current support article (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201412).

Googling "force quit" is also not helpful, as the results are full of articles giving instructions on how to quit applications from the multitasking view (which is not actually "force quitting"/killing).

Does anyone know the procedure to kill the foreground app on iOS devices without a home button?

Spotlight won't index any of the standard built-in macOS apps. It *does* index all the 3rd-party apps. Any suggestions?

Posted: 16 May 2021 10:38 PM PDT

This is on a 2019 MBP running Catalina 10.15.7. I also have a 2012 Mac mini running the same OS, and that has no problems indexing all the apps.

I should point out that I've tried all of these:

  • Added the system drive to "Privacy" in Spotlight and then removed it
  • Revealed the hidden Spotlight folder and deleted it
  • Run sudo mdutil -Ea /

Nothing's worked. Where can I go from here?

To reiterate, it indexes all my third-party apps with no issues. It's only the built-in standard macOS apps that it's refusing to see.

Photos app will not open, gets stuck at Repairing Library... 5% complete

Posted: 16 May 2021 05:58 PM PDT

I have a MacPro 5.1 running macOS Mojave 10.14.6. My Photos library is on a secondary internal drive. It was working a few days ago, but not it will not open. When I try and open it while holding command-option it prompts for a repair of the library, which I do. However, it gets stuck at 5%. What can I do to resolve this?

does iPhone connected to MacBook use power from usb or its own battery?

Posted: 16 May 2021 05:02 PM PDT

Does aniPhone connected to a MacBook by USB, use power from USB or its own battery? I want to use the iPhone camera overhead for teaching art on Zoom. Answers to this kind of heavy tech question/research are necessary to avoid a $500-$1,000 iPhone purchase mistake. Similarly, does iPhone streaming a Zoom class, use it's own storage space or that of the USB connected MacBook?

How to prevent wifi from not working after a long (2 hour sleep)

Posted: 16 May 2021 04:57 PM PDT

OS:

macos high sierra (17G8030)

issue

I work on my mac, then I close it to let it sleep. I do something else for 2-3 hours and suddenly the wifi refuses to work. It connects, but the internet connection refuses.

  • 'turning the wifi on and off'
  • changing the date/time

these don't work.

  • cannot be assed to forget wifi & type a long password in.
  • i will NOT restart my macbook, its a pain in the ass to close everything then open everything back up as it starts up slow when I open everything. (restarting works)

this was a recurring theme since yesterday and I am not letting this go on for a 3rd day.

note that I have opened activity monitor to force quit these processes more than once:

  • finder
  • dock
  • mds related

I also have a vpn software open essentially for the whole duration of this.

Adjust “home” address in Apple Maps without affecting Autofill, etc

Posted: 16 May 2021 11:04 PM PDT

When I ask Siri to "direct me home," I really mean that I want her to take me to my parking spot, which is about a block away from what Maps considers to be the location of my building. Due to one-way streets this can actually make a significant difference to the resulting navigation directions.

I considered updating my contact card "home" address to the address of my lot, so I am able to continue to ask Siri to "direct me home," use the "Home" button on CarPlay, etc. But I still want any non-maps-related services (such as Safari AutoFill) to know my real residential address.

Is there a way iOS can distinguish these two concepts?

Is there a standard way to select a tab by number in macOS applications?

Posted: 16 May 2021 04:01 PM PDT

From this question the ctl-tab is a standard way to switch among tabs of an application in macOS. I tried it out on TextEdit and it does work. If I want to go to the fifth tab (from the left) is there a way to jump to the big finale in a single shortcut combination? In Chrome it is CMD-[tab-number] e.g. CMD-3 for the third tab.

iMac late 2011 screen suddenly turn off but fan is still running

Posted: 16 May 2021 03:53 PM PDT

one morning I was using it for about 10mins then all of a sudden the screen fade and turn off like it was going into sleep mode. I then press and hold on Power button for about 15sec then restart the Mac again and nothing came on but I can hear fan is running. There was no beep sound or anything. Completely quite but fan noise (not running high or anything, normal speed fan). I did some google search and follow whatever recommended but nothing seem to make it work. Have tried Pram, unplug for 1 min then plug and wait 1 min then turn on, still not working. Tried to go into safe mode but still not working and a few other things I have tried which suggested online.

Mission Control in a 2D arrangement?

Posted: 16 May 2021 03:48 PM PDT

Is there a way of arranging Mission Control's workspaces in a two dimensional layout (like 5x5)?

So far I've only been able to arrange them in a one dimensional straight line (like 1x9) across the top. I'm finding that even though there are fewer workspaces, I get "lost" more often with 1x9 than 5x5.

Thanks.

iPhone switching on when plugged in and I really don't want that

Posted: 16 May 2021 02:46 PM PDT

Right. Short question. I have read previous threads about how it is a feature that the iPhone switches itself on when plugged in. To me it is more of a pain. I have an iPhone because that is the only option my employer offers and if I could have the damned thing switched off and tucked away in a drawer behind a cupboard in a landfill I would. It is an overpriced rubbish piece of equipment.

Is there really no way of keeping it off when plugging it in? The bloody thing wakes me up in the middle of the night if I have forgotten to switch it off AGAIN after plugging it in.

problem with log into epson tm-m30 printer

Posted: 16 May 2021 03:46 PM PDT

I have a problem log into epson tm-m30 printer. I have google search everywhere and all seem to say the username and password for accessing the printer is epson and epson. I have tried that and everything else like admin and admin and admin and 0000 and ...etc and nothing have worked out so far. I have spent 3 day searching for it but no luck so far.

I want to set a static IP address to the printer which I need to access the printer and change the IP address. I have also tried to plug ethernet to my laptop but still cannot login as I don't know the username and password. Also tried to factory reset it and still not working.

MacOS make etc/resolv-conf use secondary dns or rotate

Posted: 16 May 2021 02:49 PM PDT

I have a local DNS server (bind9) configured to resolve the fqdm of several servers that I have in my local network, until here everything OK.

I put the ip of my local dns server and I can resolve the fqdm of my servers in my local network, but I can't surf the internet. I put the DNS of my internet provider next to the ip of my local DNS server (Bind9) , and I can only surf the internet I cannot resolve the names of any of my local servers.

I try to configure my mac the file resolv.conf (/etc/resolv.conf) adding the line:

-options timeout: 1 rotate attempts: 1

But this has no effect, I still can't resolve the fqdms of my local servers but I can navigate.

I restart the mac and I still cannot resolve the fqdm and also the entry created in resolv.conf has been deleted :(. Any idea how to configure the DNS in macOS so that they rotate and can use the two DNS servers.

Bootcamp Mistakes - free space reclaim

Posted: 16 May 2021 06:31 PM PDT

I done a mistake playing with bootcamp.

I create a small Windows partition 72GB, with bootcamp. But I realized that was too small, so I decided to deleted it with Disk Utility (I know.. WRONG choice).

So I create a new windows partition (with bootcamp too) larger approx.200GB, to try to delete the first one. After that I used bootcamp to delete windows partition. But that deleted just the last one (the big one).

So I tried this How to remove a container disk and reclaim space with main partition? To delete the two partitions.

I done some stupid thinks because now I have 472GB unusable.

Is Anyone now how to transform this "freespace" to merge it to my Machkintosh HD main partition. For formation I have and iMac 2014 with fusion drive.

Thanks a lot

disk util list

Disk util partition reparition

Disk util merge process failed NB : I done it in recovery mode without success.

Mac 13inch 2020 model-M1chip- Lenovo USB C gen2 dock station--> Unable to connect dual monitors

I am trying to connect my 2 external monitors, but after connection it is displaying duplicate on both the monitors.

I tried couple of options like with VGA cable, HDMI and other options, but still duplicate mirror is displaying.

Can any one suggest what is the work around to resolve this issue?

Can a Mac be programmed to simulate pressing a key at or immediately after the launch of an app or opening of a type file?

Posted: 16 May 2021 09:42 PM PDT

I am trying to set the Preview app to not jump from page to page, but scroll between them, but I found that the relevant settings won't actually be stored, and will reset after a restart of the app or on the opening of the next file.

EDIT: although there is dedicated function for setting the default one or two page and scroll or non-scroll settings, however, for over 6 years, Preview is buggy, and won't be able to store it. After restarting the app, and opening a .pdf for the very first time it will still open it in the vomit-inducing 2-page, non-scroll setting.

(Mind you, Steve Jobs allegedly throw a Sony Walkman in garbage. I neither am a conformist, and have expectations to my $1,500 aluminum piece of garbage. Thanks for the understanding, and help!)

To find the dedicated (non-operational) function:

Go to Preview > Preferences... > PDF > Opening for the first time: Show as > Continuous Scroll.

This is supposed to set the app to open with one-page continuous scroll even after the app is closed; however, it will NOT store this setting.

Is there a way to create a shortcut in Finder to an Apple Note?

Posted: 16 May 2021 06:35 PM PDT

I like to use Apple Notes to organize details and checklists for my projects — it's very convenient. However, it would be more convenient if I could access a project note directly from the project folder in Finder. I understand that I can export the note as PDF, but as that I'm constantly adding to and changing my project notes, I'd prefer the shortcut to open the note (or note folder) in the Notes app directly.

Here's a mockup of what I'd like to accomplish:

enter image description here

I've tried to locate the note in Finder, but Apple stores all the notes together in one file. I was just going to create a shortcut to that note (which is still pretty inconvenient). Ideally I like to change the save location for an individual note, share to finder, or create a shortcut link. Can this be done with AppleScript or Automator, or even a simpler method?

Is there a multi-tabbed terminal emulator for macOS that can be run with a different $SHELL on each invocation?

Posted: 16 May 2021 08:34 PM PDT

I have an old application I've been using on Linux for a quite a while that I like very much, and I'd like to use it on macOS sometimes.

It's called hcm, and it lives at https://stromberg.dnsalias.org/~strombrg/hcm/

It's mostly about running commands on remote hosts (mostly X11 graphical applications, but some interactive shells), a little like putty, but with predefined hosts and commands.

I mostly use it to start terminal emulators that'll do a script(1)-like tty log locally, while giving interactive access to a remote host over ssh. Each new tab from a given terminal emulator gives a new tty logfile, and a new shell on the remote host again over ssh.

Is there a macOS terminal emulator, preferably an opensource one, that will respect $SHELL on each invocation? I gave iTerm2 and kitty a try, but they seem to ignore a test $SHELL. Alacritty wouldn't even run, with or without a test $SHELL, saying "Alacritty cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified."

Suggestions please?

Thanks!

Automator Applescript - Use 1 Ask For Finder Item Selection for two different Actions

Posted: 16 May 2021 09:04 PM PDT

I'm working on an Automator Application where the bit I'm up to has a finder selection window open within the App - Telestream Switch.

My Next steps would be:

1 Ask For Finder Item
2 Copy Path Name
3 Return to Telestream Switch App - cmd shift G and paste path name and enter - So that the file is selected.
4 Refer back to point 1 so that the finder item is selected again.
5 Run the following apple script to copy only the item name.

on run {input, parameters}

set fileName to first item of input tell application "System Events" to ¬ tell disk item (fileName as text) to ¬ set {theName, theExtension} to ¬ {name, name extension} if theExtension is not "" then set theName to ¬ text 1 thru -((count theExtension) + 2) ¬ of theName set the clipboard to theName else set the clipboard to theName end if return input

end run

Would this be possible?

Thanks

How can I run command line software with Rosetta 1?

Posted: 16 May 2021 09:07 PM PDT

At the request of some PPC users, I'm trying to create a PPC-compatible installer package of some open source software. Naturally, this requires compiling a PPC binary. I have a Leopard Virtual Machine set up on my Intel Mac, but I don't have access to any actual PPC hardware.

MacPorts does not offer any C++11 compilers which can cross-compile PPC binaries on Intel, but I'd thought I'd be able to work around this by running the whole of MacPorts under Rosetta. With Rosetta 2, this would be easy—I'd just set the Terminal app to "Open using Rosetta", and everything the Terminal runs would also use Rosetta. This was a commonly recommended way to run Homebrew on M1 Macs, before Homebrew finally added native Apple Silicon support a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately, Rosetta 1 does not appear to be this intelligent. I can set the Terminal app to "Open using Rosetta," but this causes only the literal Terminal app to use Rosetta. Bash, MacPorts, etc are still running as Intel processes, according to Activity Monitor.

Is there an alternate way to run command line programs—and preferably all of MacPorts—under Rosetta?

Jupyter Notebook launches the start page with MacVim instead of Safari

Posted: 16 May 2021 08:03 PM PDT

So at some point MacVim got associated with HTML pages, and since than when I launch jupyter it defaults to opening the landing page with MacVim instead of a browser.

I have changed the "Opens with" for all HTML files, and indeed if I double click an HTML file it properly loads the page in Safari, but the Jupyter issue remains as is, which is annoying. I have noticed that the icon displayed for HTML files is still MacVim's icon, as if it's the default application.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, any tips on how to resolve the situation?

Change scaling algorithm for non-retina apps running in low resolution on a retina display?

Posted: 16 May 2021 10:00 PM PDT

Regarding non-retina apps running in low-resolution mode on a retina display:

  • In the past, circa 2012 (ref), these apps were scaled with nearest-neightbour algorithm, where 1 pixel would become a group of 4 identical pixels. Confirmed in Apple Docs from the period

  • At some point since then, at least by 2016 (ref), these apps are now scaled with a bilinear (or similar) filter meaning that a single pixel does not get scaled up cleanly and the resulting group of 4 pixels is blurred with surrounding pixels

So, my question: is there a way to change the scaling algorithm back to nearest-neighbour?

AppleScript Error Message

Posted: 16 May 2021 06:04 PM PDT

I am looking for a way to batch-convert/bulk-convert .doc files into .docx files. I found this TidBITS Talk that references a Redit thread for an AppleScript (AS) and a dead DropBox link for an Automator integration of mentioned AS in a WorkFlow.

However, when I run the script in Automator or Script Editor I get a Syntax Error - Expected end of line, etc. but found identifier. Inside the script compatibility is highlighted (as being the issue, I guess).

What can be done to correct the error?

Find the new version as suggested by @CJK of the entire script here below:

MacBook 7,1 randomly shutting down (shutdown cause -102)

Posted: 16 May 2021 11:00 PM PDT

I have a MacBook 7,1 (mid 2010) and sometimes it randomly shuts down. This only happens when I am doing something very resource intensive (like gaming). After the shutdown I can use my Mac for "normal" things without any issues, but as soon as I do the same thing as before the shutdown, it will shutdown again.

When checking the console, it says "Previous shutdown cause: -102". The only thing I could find was "Overvoltage shutdown protection", but I wouldn't know why there would be an overvoltage. Disconnecting the charger and using the battery doesn't help.

Resetting the SMC seems to help, but after a month or so the problem starts occurring again. I ran an Apple Hardware Test (both regular and extended version) and it doesn't find any issues. What can be causing this? Is it an issue with the motherboard?

Just to make sure: Is it possible that it's the 6Gbps SSD (Samsung 860 EVO) that I installed (while my Mac officially only supports 3Gbps), somehow messing things up?

Why is the process bluetoothd taking up to 100% of a CPU core

Posted: 16 May 2021 05:03 PM PDT

Over the past few months I've noticed the process bluetoothd taking up to 100% of a CPU core. I normally only have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected. With just the mouse and keyboard connected the process periodically (a couple minutes every hour) ramps up from <10% to 100%. But, when I have a bluetooth mouse, keyboard, and headset connected the bluetoothd process tends to stay 90-100% while the headset is connected.

(side problem) Bluetooth sporadically will take a couple minutes to connection or I will have to turn bluetooth off/on to make the initially connection when I log-on for the day.

  • Computer: Mid-2012 Macbook 15"
  • OS: Catalina (happened in last couple major updates too)
  • Keyboard: Microsoft Mobile Keyboard 6000
  • Mouse: Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Mouse Bluetooth
  • Headphones: Jabra Evolve 65

enter image description here

^This is with Mouse, Keyboard, and Headset connected but without audio playing

Attempted Fix

I've tried power cycling bluetooth and computer. I've tried resetting the Bluetooth module. I've deleted the .plist.

Any other suggestions? It doesn't make sense that the bluetoothd process use that much resources when it never did a few OS versions ago.

Touch Bar display partly not working

Posted: 16 May 2021 03:47 PM PDT

My Mac's Touch Bar's display doesn't work near the Touch ID button, and I have no idea why. There is supposed to be a Siri button at that location, but it's not there.

The touch still works at the black area, but I hope the display isn't broken or something.

Tried Restarting and resetting the SMC, but it didn't work.

Device: MBP 2018 13-inch Touch Bar
OS: macOS Mojave 10.14.6

When I screenshot the Touch Bar, the Siri button is in it: enter image description here

Why does macOS 10.13 suddenly asks for a PIN instead of password for login?

Posted: 16 May 2021 03:02 PM PDT

When facing the lock screen to enter my credentials, my Mac running macOS 10.13 High Sierra asks for a PIN instead of my password. This has happened 4 times within the last months. The only solution is to force a shutdown and restart. Then my MacBook will ask for my password again. I have never setup a PIN and it's not the screen I would get if I lock my MacBook through Find my Mac.

Unfortunately, only search results regarding Find my Mac come up when searching for PIN and MacBook. I hope someone can help me by referring to the screenshot above.

What is this PIN and why is macOS asking for it? How can I prevent macOS from asking for a PIN?
