Can I charge an iPhone XS from my Macbook Pro 2015 when my MBP is running on battery? Posted: 09 May 2021 10:00 PM PDT I'm certain I used to be able to charge my iPhone from my laptop's battery. Yesterday when I plugged it in, the iPhone wouldn't charge from my laptop. My question is: Can I charge an iPhone XS from my Macbook Pro 2015 when my MBP is running on battery? |
Mission Control (expose) disabled by CASSPP test setup Posted: 09 May 2021 09:33 PM PDT I recently setup my son's 10.15.7 OS X mb pro to take the CASSPP test. They require that you load up a special profile that turns off a bunch of stuff, as described here: https://ca-toms-help.ets.org/spring-21-parents-guardians/download-secure-browser/mac-big-sur/ That all went fine, as did, for the most part, the annoying mess of manual stuff you have to do to undo the damage wrought by installing the new profile. (See section "Steps to Restore Settings"). Everything came back EXCEPT mission control (expose). I usually have expose hooked to my hot corners, and I can hook pretty much anything else (e.g., enter screen saver) to the hot corners and they work fine, but expose (mission control) seems to be simply dead. It's not dead for other accounts, just the one we did the new profile to. And it's dead to the function keys as well (f3, I guess). I even tried using terminal commands (defaults), rebooting multiple times, resetting the SCM -- pretty much everything you can think of, but I can't get mc/expose to work. Any further advice on how to force it on? Thanks! |
How to move window on top of the fullscreen window Posted: 09 May 2021 10:17 PM PDT I want to be able to move window on top of the fullscreen window to be able to present in Zoom and Microsoft Teams ✅ It is possible to achieve in case if you have multiple displays just by drag-and-dropping window from one physical display to another or by using tools like Rectangle 👇 In that case you able to share your fullscreen window having your presenter notes on top of it so, you are able to present with presenter notes without any need to connect external monitor to your Macbook 💡 😢However if you don't have any external monitors connected to your Macbook it is not possible to achieve. In that case only option you have is by using mission control mode but in that case all you get is a split screen which will eventually affect the size of the window you are sharing, if you see what I mean 👇 Is there any solution for that case? ☝️ |
How to remove new line from Terminal on launch? Posted: 09 May 2021 08:44 PM PDT When I launch terminal, it always puts a new line at the beginning first. I am using zsh and did install ohmyzsh but I can't seem to find anything that would cause this behaviour. Please see attached screenshot. Using powerlevel10k theme. I checked .bashrc, .zshrc, and every other profile I can think of but can't figure it out. |
Mac OS Big Sur | kernal_task usage is 500% when connected to external monitor Posted: 09 May 2021 08:40 PM PDT I'm facing a system lag issue whenever I connect to my external monitor, even though there is no user process. I have already gone through some of the answers in the stack exchange and did two things as of now.
as mentioned in this link CPU usage is too high with Yosemite and an external monitor But the problem, even after those two changes I can see kernal_task is more than 500% and I'm not able to use Macbook pro at all. Previously it was once or twice an occurrence, now it is happening every time I connect to an external monitor. I have also taken a spin-dump ( 5MB ) and system diagnostics ( 200+ MB ). So I dunno how to share this here. Let me know if any of you need it for analysis. |

Which monitor is used to show the booting screen? Posted: 10 May 2021 12:27 AM PDT When I am booting my mac mini, how does it pick which of the three monitors it uses to show the apple logo and password screen on? (This is not necessarily the same screen declared as the primary for the menu bar.) I have three monitors that are positioned like a TIE Fighter, and I would prefer not to have to look at the boot info sideways as it is starting up. Based on the answer, I should be able to determine a method by which proper screen can be obtained. |
Application cannot save document Posted: 09 May 2021 06:53 PM PDT I am having trouble with an App Store application , The application can save a new document, but every attempt to save changes to an existing document gives me the message: According to Brother, as well as the reviews on the App Store, others don't seem to have the same problem, but that's hard to believe, as I have the same problem on two different iMacs (running macOS 11.3 and 10.15) and a MacBook, running 11.3. Clearly it's not just a Big Sur problem, and it's not limited to one machine. I have tried saving on the local volume, in the Downloads and Desktop folder, as well as in an iCloud folder. Being an App Store application, it might be a sandbox issue. I have tried various things with permissions, both in the shell and in the Finder, but I'm certainly open to suggestions. Assuming that the problem is limited to me, what sort of things might cause this behaviour? |

Apple account's password and iTunes for Windows gets auto-reset every few weeks Posted: 09 May 2021 05:03 PM PDT I am using my iPhone mainly for calling, chatting, checking mail and browsing the Internet. I almost never use purchasable or downloadable content. I connect my iPhone to my PC and launch iTunes for my PC about once every 1-2 months. Every time I connect to iTunes:
What am I missing? I never heard about any Apple's auto expiration policy. And what is the reason for my iTunes to have all "Sync" options switched "off" each time I visit? Is this some kind of weird way of forcing me to visit it more often? At first I thought "the think" that everyone thinks in this situation. It's my imagination, since I am using iTunes so rarely then I am also asked for password on very rare basis and I simply forgot what password I have set previously. But that's not true. Breaking all possible security advises, this time I had noted down the password on some piece of paper and hidden it in my shelf. Next, about 2-3 months after I last time visited iTunes for PC, I have launched it again, wrote letter-by-letter my "current" password from that piece of paper and... it was rejected as invalid. I have also recall that during past 9 months (since I purchased this phone) I have visited iTunes for PC about 6 times and I was forced to reset / change my password... 6 times. Because each time iTunes claimed that it was incorrect. I have also recall that each those six time I had to enable sync "again", because it was turned off once I actually got to iTunes. Can someone tell me what is going on here? |

How can I find what swcdn is trying to download? Posted: 09 May 2021 04:43 PM PDT I have two mac computers. One of them is constantly downloading from swcdn.apple.com, the other does not. My guess is that swcdn stands for SoftWare Content Delivery Network. I have a limited internet connection and swcdn.apple.com is often consuming my connection preventing other work. Using Little Snitch, I can see nsurlsessiond is making connections to mesu.apple.com and swcdn.apple.com. I have disabled automatic software updates. How can I find what my computer is downloading or streaming from swcdn.apple.com? |
Does the new 24" iMac Touch ID keyboard work with Mac's with the T2 Chip? Posted: 09 May 2021 04:57 PM PDT I have a 2019 MacBook Air with Touch ID and was wondering if the new 24" iMac Touch ID keyboard will work with my computer. I know for sure that it works with all other Apple Silicon computers, but what about computers with the Apple T2 chip. When I use my Mac with my external monitor my unlock with Apple Watch doesnt always work and putting in the password is hassle especially when I am in a hurry Thanks in advance! |
iPhone 7 with a broken home button [duplicate] Posted: 09 May 2021 11:19 PM PDT My iPhone 7 is in recovery mode and the home button is broken. There is a prompt that says "Press home to recover" and it's not popping up when I connect with iTunes. |
Watched screen recording but it's not saved to the desktop Posted: 09 May 2021 07:07 PM PDT I was screen recording. After stopping the record, I watched it then exited. This usually automatically saves to desktop, but I can't find it anywhere. I have looked for it in the autosave information and nothing was there. I also tried recording again and it did automatically save to desktop but somehow that first video didn't. Any thoughts on where it could be? |
Volume password challenge in Migration Assistant Posted: 09 May 2021 06:40 PM PDT I'm trying to migrate a user account from an old MacBook Pro to a recent, two-year-old iMac.
I'm able to open Migration Assistant on both devices. The device I'm migrating to sees the source device, it totals up the capacity utilization of the accounts I can migrate from. I choose the account on my source device that I want to migrate. When I'm ready to go, though, Migration Assistant on the target device gives me a message saying that I must supply a Volume Password for an account that is authorized. I thought this was because my source machine used FileVault. I input the password for that account on the source device, but it wouldn't authorize. Therefore, I decrypted my source machine, meaning I turned off the FileVault protection. It took a couple of days to do that. Migration Assistant still gets to a point where it requires a Volume Password. I don't know what it means. I've tried every password used by every account on the source and target devices. I'm still blocked from migration. |
Shortcut keys to delete all text to end of line (or all text after cursor)? [duplicate] Posted: 09 May 2021 06:22 PM PDT Edit: This question was marked as duplicate and closed, but I checked the suggested duplicates before asking mine and found they had different particulars, even if they were about the same topic. If, however, I missed the exact duplicate, then I stand corrected. When deleting all text before the cursor, you could use the keyboard shortcut CMD + Delete, but what's the opposite equivalent when you want to delete all text after the cusor (or to the end of a line)? |

Music app only shows an outdated music library after I've retrieved it from backup Posted: 09 May 2021 03:04 PM PDT I made a clean reinstallation of my Mac a few days ago due to a problem that had been bugging me for a while now. And, among other things, I tried to retrieve my music library from my backup via Time Machine back to the music app. It was the folder „iTunes". To get all the settings back I've opened the file "iTunes Library.itl". But unfortunately, it seems to be completely outdated (it's from late 2019!) which also shows in the music app. There are only songs and playlists listed up to that date, even though the songs in the iTunes Media folder (or to be more specific, in How can I get back the settings I've had a few days back with all my playlists and songs? |
Increasing the size of all content Posted: 09 May 2021 09:06 PM PDT I'm looking for something that works like "display size" on Android, "change the size of text, apps, and other items" on Windows or "zoom level" on Linux Mint. "Text size" doesn't cut it because it leaves a lot of things unscaled and accessibility zoom - well, I'm sure it's nice for severely impaired people but I just want to scale up everything by something like 25 to 50% without having to need to pan around. (I'm using an iPad Pro with iOS 14.4.2) |
Posted: 09 May 2021 10:01 PM PDT If I am the host of a Zoom meeting and people arrive at the meeting late and I want to admit them to the meeting without interrupting the flow of my presentation, is there any way to "Admit all from Waiting Room" from the keyboard? This is further complicated by the fact that if only one person is in the waiting room, there is no "Admit all" option. Things I've unsuccessfully tried:
I don't know if there is a path forward with UI Scripting through AppleScript, or if I'm overlooking a simulated mouse click solution, or if there's something else I'm not thinking of, but I'd love to be able to admit latecomers to a zoom meeting from the keyboard. |
Does a Big Sur 11.x Update kill genuine Apple SSDs in MacBook Pro 13" Early 2015? Posted: 09 May 2021 07:20 PM PDT I've heard quite a few stories of Big Sur bricking older MacBooks, but I'm not quite sure in which way precisely they get bricked (motherboard or just SSD), so question is whether the following story fits into those reports: I have the 13" MBPR (Early 2015, 2.9 GHz i5) of my 78 year old father here, which is kind of dead after he – if he recalls correctly – performed an update from Big Sur 11.x to Big Sur 11.y (he grabs every update he gets offered, so unfortunately he doesn't pay much attention to the details). Let's call this MacBook A. It has a 512 GB SSUBX Apple Samsung OEM SSD (Model MZ-JPV5120/0A4). Let's call this SSD A. After the update the MacBook doesn't boot up properly anymore: Apple logo and progress bar appear, everything looks normal at first, but at 50% the progress bars stalls ... and that's it. I waited as much as 10 hours, but it doesn't move a single pixel. For cross reference/examination I have another 13" MBPR (Early 2015, 2.7 GHz i5) with 512 GB SSD running Catalina perfectly fine. Let's call this MacBook B and SSD B. Here's what I've tried and observed so far:
Conclusion up to this point: The MacBook A still is perfectly fine, it's the SSD A which is f#ck3d up (thanks to the Big Sur update). Next ...
I have 30+ years of Mac background, I've seen SSDs biting the dust, but this is nothing I've ever seen before. Ideas? |
Mid 2009 MacBook pro cannot download osx Posted: 09 May 2021 08:04 PM PDT I have a mid-2009 MacBook pro in which I replaced the HD with SSHD a few years ago. It was updated to El Capitan and runs fine. Now I want to get it ready to sell. I have successfully erased the SSHD but cannot get OS X of any version to download. I have tried the original OS X CD, snow leopard CD, internet downloads, all to no success. When running from the disk drive it will start through the process and stall out. Via internet it also starts through the process and stops, I get a message that it could not be installed and "no packages are eligible for install" I can restore it via time machine and have done so and restarted the process per Apple instructions but cannot get it to work. Help. |
External keyboard Logitech Slim Folio Pro not always allow me to type text on iPadOS 14.2 Posted: 09 May 2021 04:03 PM PDT Sometimes I am unable to type text into text field in the apps on iPadOS 14.2 (the same behaviour I encountered before on previous versions of the iPadOS). Sometimes this also happening for "Spotlight" but this is rarer than for the apps. I could use function keys in that moment so this is not an issue with connectivity. This is probable some "feature" of Apple system. How I could avoid this problem? I use Logitech Slim Folio Pro (Bluetooth keyboard & cover) |

Mouse settings don't retain in Logitech options Posted: 09 May 2021 08:31 PM PDT I have an Logitech MX Master mouse that comes with a program to adjust it's settings called Logitech Options. I use this to adjust the issue many people have a mac: you wanna scroll with trackpad the 'natural' way, but with the mouse wheel you want the reverse. In Logitech Options you can configure these two separately: However after every times the MacBook sleeps for a while the settings don't apply any more. They are still set correctly, but I have to change them and set them back every to for the settings to apply again. This is an issue on my current MacBook Pro (2019 model), not on my previous one (mid 2015). I run MacOS Catalina (10.15.2) How can I fix this? |
Permanently grant right to control another app to Apple Script App Posted: 09 May 2021 11:19 PM PDT I am using an AppleScript app (i.e., an AppleScript exported to an OS X app) to copy the message ID of an e-mail currently selected in Mail.app to the clipboard. Whenever I run the AppleScript app, I have to confirm that it is allowed to read the message ID from Mail.app. That is, I get a popup asking:
With two buttons, [Don't Allow] and [OK]. So I always have to click [OK]. Is it possible to permanently grant my app to read data from Mail.app? I have already found System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy, and checked the box under "Allow the apps below to control other apps.", but still get the popup whenever I run the AppleScript app. |

Turn on Do Not Disturb mode on all devices from one device Posted: 09 May 2021 05:03 PM PDT Has anyone found a way to turn on Do Not Disturb mode for every device from one. Often times when I'm trying to work and people won't shut up I turn on DND mode on my MBP but then my iPhone will start dinging away. So I turn on DND mode there too. Then iPad starts up etc. This is an almost endless process. There's an additional 2 other Macs tied into my iCloud account. I've been tempted to just turn it off completely but it's about as handy as it is annoying. Also find that when I need to turn DND mode off I forget on 1 device or more causing some annoyance if I actually need the notifications. Ideally I'd like to be able to activate DND mode globally from my MBP. I'm curious if anyone else has seen a possible solution to this. |
What is the macOS equivalent to Window's AppData folder? Posted: 09 May 2021 04:37 PM PDT I was originally looking for my Google Chrome profile because something went wrong and I need to delete it. In the process I realized that I don't know where applications in general are putting this kind of stuff. Where is the typical place to go looking? |
