Is there an app that lets you swap all open windows between monitors? Posted: 09 Jun 2022 12:05 PM PDT I use a separate monitor for each of my sitting and standing desks. I would like to know if there is an app that can swap all windows between the monitors when I transition between the desks. |
Batch transfer thousands of photos from iPhone Posted: 09 Jun 2022 10:52 AM PDT I am trying to transfer many thousands of photos from an extremely full iPhone. I am using "Import from Iphone" in Preview.app (open to other methods as well), but this method opens a preview "page" for every imported photo. Over time, this slows the process down and eventually crashes Preview.app once memory is exhausted. Is there any way to avoid opening each image as it imports? I typically just close the preview window every few minutes, which does not affect the import, but it seems stupid to need to do this, especially for a multi-hour process. |

After wake from sleep, windows moved from desktop on external display to desktop on MacBook display Posted: 09 Jun 2022 11:57 AM PDT After my MacBook wakes up, I find it's moved all the windows from the desktop on the external display, to the desktop on the MacBook display. This is extremely annoying. I understand completely that the MacBook thinks the external display is not attached anymore because perhaps it's too slow to wake up. But moving the windows between desktops, which are a group, is just annoying because I'm using desktops to organise themes of work that I'm grouping together on purpose. So when the MacBook wakes up, I find that all the windows from both displays are now on the MacBook display, mixing everything together. If Apple wants to do this, why not move the entire desktop that was previously on the external display to the MacBook display but keep the grouping the same? The way I see it, things are grouped together. Windows are inside a desktop, which is a group of windows, and each screen has a number of desktops, which basically groups multiple desktops onto a particular screen. So is there a way to tell macOS to move the entire desktop with all its contents intact to the MacBook display, instead of moving the windows between different desktops, causing the chaos I'm talking about? |
How does Music "know" that an MP3 file was copied from it? Posted: 09 Jun 2022 08:08 AM PDT I wanted to create an audio file in Music that had many ID3 tags the same as another file already there. So with Music.app not running, I copied the file from the Music library into a working directory. In the copy, I changed the title, disk number, and audio with Amadeus, and replaced the lyrics with eyeD3. Then I copied the changed copy into the "auto import" directory. When I launched Music.app, the new title/disk number appeared in the app and the one I had copied was removed. So apparently, Music has some way of relating the copied-and-edited file to the original and saying "Oh, he's changing this song not adding a new one." However, when I restore the earlier song from backup, the new one does not disappear. I assume it's something in the ID3 tags, though it might be in the metadata that Music stores in XML. My question would be to learn how does this happen? so that I can take steps to prevent it. Before anyone asks, the reason I'm not putting all the songs in at once is that I am creating the files for language learning and labeling them as different disks in the same album to keep them organized. "copy and edit" is just a way to re-use most of the ID3 tags instead of having to put them in repeatedly. |

Top row (Function Keys) and Delete key not working on MacBook pro 13 inch Mid 2012 Posted: 09 Jun 2022 07:52 AM PDT Recently, I got my MacBook Pro Mid-2012 13-inch Keyboard replaced. Initially, it was working perfectly. All of sudden (while typing), I noticed that my Delete Key stop working. Then I started checking other keys also and go to know that my Volume keys are behaving differently. I mean when I press them they do work correctly, but they don't do the stock commands like turning the volume up, down, brightness, next song, etc. I came to know about the Keyboard Viewer and to my surprise, I saw that the fn key is pressed by default. As far as I remember, I never pressed the fn key. Tried lots of solutions like resetting NVRAM, and the checkbox under the System preferences -> Keyboard. I don't know what is the exact issue. Sharing the link for the Image and Video reference. |
Where does APFS hide the resource forks and/or persistent Finder data? Posted: 09 Jun 2022 07:21 AM PDT Opening a directory in Finder used to create a .DS_Store in the directory. But I just opened one today and that file was not created. However, it did add eight kilobytes to the size of the directory. And if I copy or move But when looking here for ..namedfork or /rsrc or ..namedfork/rsrc, I find nothing. |

My internal SuperDrive gets power, but won't show up in macOS Posted: 09 Jun 2022 10:52 AM PDT I have a 2010 white MacBook with 10.13.6 High Sierra installed, and my internal SuperDrive isn't detected. It gets power and spins up when I put a DVD in it, but the drive doesn't show up. The eject button doesn't work, it doesn't show up in system report, and I already reset the SMC and NVRAM more than once. |
How to stop iTerm2 requiring being granted access every time Posted: 09 Jun 2022 07:02 AM PDT This issue is possibly related to this one, though I'm not quite sure how to translate those steps. I'm using macOS 12.4 on a MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021), and would like to use iTerm2 as a replacement for Terminal. At present, every time I try to access something in a protected directory (e.g. Downloads, network volumes), I'm asked for permission, like this:
When I allow this access for Terminal even once, I'm never asked again and it just works. I've also tried giving iTerm2 "Full Disk Access" in Security & Privacy, and still get this. I think this is a bug of some kind, given the different behavior for Terminal. Does anyone know how to give iTerm2 (and other third party apps) this access? |
App store connect (erroneously?) does not prompt me for encryption exempt documents Posted: 09 Jun 2022 06:51 AM PDT I have a LOB app that allows users to encrypt files with a specified password. Hashing is used to derive a fixed length-key which is then used by AES to encrypt the content. (It also uses HTTPS and the native keychain, but both of these are exempt anyway). From what I understand, this is actually not an exempt from the US export regulation since I use encryption, but not for the sake of any of the points specified in f ("support of entertainment, mass commercial broadcasts or medical records management"). However, if I take the questionnaire provided by App Store Connect, it actually just prompts me with I reminder that I am required to file a report to the US Gov if I use HTTPS, and not the usual file upload I would expect. I figured that what triggers this outcome is this question:
I chose 'No', since AES is specified by the IETF. The upload prompt only appears when I choose 'Yes' here. I really don't understand how using standardized algorithm should free me from filing a report, and apple's documentation only makes this infinitely more confusing. My conclusions would be: I just leave Q: Are my assumptions right? An if so: If the described procedure does not require |

Contact sent over MMS not loading properly on iOS Posted: 09 Jun 2022 09:56 AM PDT I had iMessage turned off, and someone with an iphone sent me a contact using 'share contact', usually I'd expect to receive a very ios-friendly contact that I can just click and add, however, this time I received in the message a file attachment with the form 'contactname.vcf' instead of the contact appearing as usual for IOS, is this because of having iMessage off or should this be rendering? |
Software Update shows multiple Command Line Tools updates for Xcode versions not even installed Posted: 09 Jun 2022 10:45 AM PDT Following problems with the GNU gcc compiler installed through brew (messages about missing libraries that suddenly started appearing) I had to reinstall Xcode 13.4.1 yesterday. This morning I'm now seeing several updates for Command Line Tools, for other versions of Xcode: Why is this showing? And how do I dismiss those? gcc is now working fine so I don't want to mess anything up! |
Keyboard shortcut to make window fill up screen Posted: 09 Jun 2022 06:35 AM PDT Is there a keyboard shortcut or a way of setting one to fill the window to the whole screen size, without actually being full screened. How do I avoid having to clear Messages notifications on multiple devices? Posted: 09 Jun 2022 09:08 AM PDT When I get a new iMessage, I'm happy to see a notification appear on all my devices because I might be using any of them. However once I have actually read the message, I don't want to have to go and clear the notification on all the other devices. I'd like all my devices to automatically recognize that I've read the message and clear the notification for me. Is there any way to achieve that or something similarly time-saving? |

Posted: 09 Jun 2022 10:10 AM PDT I have a Macbook Air with the typical US keyboard layout printed in the keys, but I want to use the keyboard as if it were a Spanish keyboard because I'm accustomed to that layout and since I don't look at the keys while typing I don't mind the layout not matching the characters actually printed in the keys. The layout of my keyboard looks exactly like this: I have configured the keyboard to behave as if it were an Spanish one, by going to Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources and adding the "Español - ISO" layout. That works fine, mostly, with one exception: The key at the left of the top "1" key (with the printed characters "`~") doesn't behave the same as the key in the same position in a Spanish keyboard, even after configuring the "Español - ISO" layout. Instead of the key being "ºª\", which is the key at the left of "1" in the Spanish keyboard, it behaves as a "<>≤" key. Why is that? So, since this is happening, I can't use those symbols ("ºª\"), of which I miss the backslash the most. How can I get the backslash with this layout without having to switch to US keyboard just to get the backslash character (below the "delete" key), and then switching back to Spanish layout? (which is a cumbersome process just to get a single character each time). Edit: I think the problem is that the Spanish keyboard actually has an extra key that the US keyboard lacks (please note that the Shift key is shorter in the Spanish keyboard to accomodate the extra "<>≤" key). |
Noob struggling to tell terminal to install scikit-image 0.16.2 for Pyxelate Posted: 09 Jun 2022 10:06 AM PDT I'm using macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 I think this should be a very easy install, but apparently not. At first, I spotted terminal told me I don't have Cython. Ok. I installed it, then it gave me a long ass error command, which I have no idea to solve. I barely know what it meant. And Pyxelate can't take newest version of scikit-image. Is that my clang's file isn't match the pip3? If so, how can I fix that? I really have no idea. |
MacBook Pro 13'' (2020) with Dell TB16 Posted: 09 Jun 2022 07:02 AM PDT I'm currently able to use an external monitor via HDMI connection thanks to Thunderbolt3Unblocker but very often after unplugging the dock my laptop restarts due to an error: this seems related to a problem in windows resizing, is there any solution to that? Also, some other strange things are happening from time to time: twice or thrice in my 2 weeks of usage it happened that after unplugging and then reconnecting to the dock, the two USB-C ports of the side of the laptop where the dock was previously plugged in stopped sending any signal to the monitor, while the other two on the other side were still working fine (this seemed to happen after, when unplugged, I left the laptop go to sleep mode); display port connection is apparently not working at all, while mini display port works with a suboptimal resolution (but this is covered in this conversation: https://github.com/rgov/Thunderbolt3Unblocker/issues/28). I'm using MacOs 10.15.7 |
iPhone is stuck in Recovery Mode with full storage Posted: 09 Jun 2022 12:06 PM PDT I was trying to update my iPhone X (GSM) from iOS 12.3.1 to iOS 14.0.1 The following steps was carried: 1- Downloading the latest firmware ipsw (size 4.61 GB) from iPhone10,3,iPhone10,6_14.0.1_18A393_Restore.ipsw from ipsw.me 2- Downloading the latest iTunes on my Windows 10 PC 3- Connecting the iPhone by an original USB cable to my PC 4- Locating my iPhone and pressing "Shift" button from my keyboard and pressing on the Update from iTunes 5- Selected the ipsw which was previously downloaded. 6- During in the middle of the update, an error came out with a code # 14. 7- My iPhone got stuck permanently on the iTunes logo 8- Tried for several times to exit the Recovery Mode by Pressing and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button. it just keep restarting and getting back into the Recovery Mode. 9- Downloaded couple of software's "Tenorshare ReiBoot Pro" and "3uTools" to force exit Recovery Mode, no good results. The problem here is happening because I guess that I have tried to install the updates although there was no enough storage on my iPhone. If there is anyway to delete large files in order to free space of my iPhone (while it is in Recovery Mode" it would be much appreciated. Or If there is a way to update the iPhone to any iOS that has a small ipsw size would help on this issue, bare in mind downgrading or using OTA (Over the Air) firmwares to be directly installed on my iPhone by a PC. Note:
Thinking outside the box: If there is a way to connect the iPhone to any operating system i.e. Linux and have it connected there by entering the file explorer in order to delete some large files would help, need some experiments please. |
How can I change the SMB server address my Music files are on? Posted: 09 Jun 2022 11:07 AM PDT I store my iTunes library (now Music.app) on a Samba server. The server's DNS name has changed, but the volume/share name has not. The share is called However, I am unable to sync my iPhone or play music in Music.app because it somehow still tried to connect to the old DNS name, even though from what I can tell the path names coded in the library don't contain the Samba server name. However when i try to sync my iPhone I get a message
This happens even if I first use Go > Connect to server... in the finder and connect to the server, so my music is available at the desired path I don't want to delete my library and re-import because I'll lose all my star ratings and play counts. How can I resolve this? How can I update the Samba server path for the music in my Music.app library? |
What is the opposite of “Allow” for undoing a terminal command Posted: 09 Jun 2022 12:27 PM PDT I'm looking to undo a command that I have executed through ARD to allow access to non-admin users to make changes to NETWork PREF. As I now need to remove the access it seems that I'm not able to find the right "word" to execute the command. All I need to know is what the opposite of "allow" is, as "deny" doesn't seem to work. Any help on this would be much appreciated. ThanksNo one asked but just found my way back to this post and I've realised that I can share what the solution is ...pretty simple actually. Simply replace the "variable" with one of the following, based on your requirements: "authenticate-admin" or "authenticate" or "admin" or "authenticate-admin-30" This should be valid for 10.14 and probably above |
Can I access iCloud Drive files from non-apple device? Posted: 09 Jun 2022 06:15 AM PDT I have an application that stores its files on iCloud Drive for synchronization. I'd like to write a cloud service that can also access the files. For example, if I record a video on my app, I'd like to ask my service to download the file, and send it to a transcoding service, or something. From the device, can I create an authenticated URL to the file? Alternatively, can I create a temporary token to send to the server, so that it can access the file? Then, when transcoding is complete, can I write back to the iCloud Drive? I'm mostly trying to avoid uploading the entire file from the device to the server, because the files might be quite large. I'm also trying to use iCloud Drive to support the seamless file sync between device and mac laptop without having to explicitly authenticate - that type of thing isn't supported by google drive, or dropbox, correct? Thanks very much in advance, I appreciate any help at all! |
