nessus-service consuming more than 80% of CPU with Montery 12.2

Ever since my mbp was upgraded from 12.1 to 12.2, the fans are howling non-stop, and the laptop is much hotter than before.

Took a look at Activity Monitor, and it was found nessus-service consuming more than 80% of CPU.

No call audio when using lightning to 3.5mm adapter

I'm trying to use 3.5mm headphones with my iPhone 11 running iOS 15.3. I've tried a few different lightning to 3.5mm adapters and they have the same issue: music, games, videos work great; phone or Zoom calls always play from the phone's built-in speakers rather than the headphones. Even voicemail playback goes to the phone speakers rather than headphones.

When I bring up the audio devices in Control Center, the adapter + headphones show as "Dock speaker". I tried setting Accessibility > Call Audio Routing to "Speaker", but otherwise I'm not seeing any switches to flip. And searches on these keywords are flooded with results for broken connectors and the like so I'm having trouble finding anyone having this same issue.

Using the Apple wired lighting connector earbuds from a previous works fine, so phone-over-lightning can work, just not with any of the 3.5mm adapters I've tried? Any help or 3.5mm adapter recommendations appreciated.

macOS web browser based on Chrome/Chromium that does not auto-update in background?

On my new M1 system I've decided to switch to the desktop Safari browser for battery, privacy, and security reasons.

However, many websites are designed for Chrome/Chromium and it would be good to have a standalone browser available for such cases.

I would like to avoid installing vanilla Google Chrome due to the "Chrome is Bad" issue and the keystone background daemon process aggressively using CPU and memory even when Chrome is closed.

It's ok if the browser "checks for updates" on launch (in a manner similar to the Sparkle framework). What I want to avoid is an always-running background daemon doing who-knows-what to my system, like Chrome's keystone updater does.

Turning off auto-updates is also a needed feature on metered/limited cellular or satellite internet connections.

Are there any shipping consumer macOS Chromium-based desktop web browsers that are self-contained, without an always-running resource-hogging update mechanism?

I watch all foreign language dialog the same way: in the original language with English subtitles if (and only if) the dialog is in a foreign language. How do I configure my Apple TV (tvOS 15.3) so that that is the configuration I always get, in all my ATV apps?

I am developing a Mac Application focus on deploy in Appstore. It has a module that uses lot of dylib and third-party libraries. That Module itself has around 300 MB. But only some users need that functionality. So we are planning to release it as a separate thing named "AAA". If any user needs AAA can download and install using main app. Also AAA has no UI. So i am totally confused about the communication. From different blogs i found that communication through background to another app may fail in Appstore review. Is that correct? Also which is the best way to communicate between this two without any issues from review process. Please help me on this if anyone has good experience in this area. I am new in this type of app so total blocked. Can't able to make a decision. But i need that Main app in store. :(

BigSur is repeatedly asking for access to my keychain

I was using a VPN client which uses a cert from keychain, the cert expired, so I decided to update the cert and deleted the old one, added new one. then made use the new certificate has "All access", and checked the OS trusts the new cert. Fine so far - I now go into my VPN client, choose the cert from a list and it then asks for Keychain access - but it's keeps asking for username and password in a loop. (A bit like MacOS keeps asking for System Keychain, but i have the system password.)

In frustration I have re-installed the app, and rebooted 4 times now, this app used to work just fine. I have also reset me "login keychain" which should not make a difference, since the certificate is in the system keychain. But not much makes sense after a while, sorry. Something about the way the OS lets the app access the certificate is not great. If I "unlock the entire keychain", against my better judgement, the app is still unable to access the certificate and the VPN app just errors saying it cannot read the certificate.

I also selected the key in the cert and changed the Access on it to "allow all apps", but not sure if that has confused issues farther. (And just be a daft thing to do)

Same user profile, two different instances of macOS Mail.app

In the same user profile I'd like to use two separate instances of Mail.app.

Website makeuseof suggests the creation of an app with Script Editor as follows: do shell script "open -n /System/Applications/Mail.app", save it as an Application and run it.

There are two immediate issues with this solution:

  1. If the first instance of Mail.app is opened with the script, the second instance (mail launched directly without passing through the script) won't open;
  2. If the two instances are opened (by 1st launching Mail.app without the script, then the one through the script), enabling/disabling accounts in one of the instances affects immediately the other instance which defeats the purpose (at least for me) of having 2 separate instances.

I also tried "Differentiate two instances of the same application in the dock" found here in Ask Different, but command nohup /System/Applications/Mail.app -data $1 2>&1 > /dev/null did not work (i.e., Mail.app does not launch).

Finally, I also tried "Running two separate instances of Safari in the same user session" found here in Ask Different which suggests using slightly modified code as the first one above: open -n -a /System/Applications/Mail.app. However, as expected, the result is the same (i.e., two instances of Mail.app do open, however, modifying the enabled/disabled mail accounts immediately affects both instances of the app).

Any ideas on how to solve this one?

Important remarks:

  • I do not want to use another user profile and fast switch between them;
  • I do not want to use a web interface of the mail accounts;
  • I do not want to use another mail client (e.g., Thunderbird, MS Outlook, etc.);
  • If only additional apps are required, as much as possible I'd like them not to be commercial (open source material accepted, however).

System used:

  • macOS Monterey version 12.1
  • Mail.app version 15.0 (3693.40.0.1.81)

How to decrease screen time data on iOS?

Parents of my friend make her show her screen time every day. Important: they haven't set any limits, they check screen time every day manually.
How can she decrease screen time data? For example, on Android I can uninstall an app and screen time will be decreased for time I was using this app. But this doesn't work on iOS. What other ways are possible to bypass screen time on iOS?
If important, my friend's phone is iPhone 7+

How to stop MacOS caching folder contents

I am using Big Sur 11.6.1 (20G224)

I spend a lot of my time downloading client files from the web to then work on locally - the issue is that I can download a file but then, in Finder, the file does not show sometimes for a few hours.

Example, I go to Safari and download a file to a folder - I can confirm the file is there as if I try to download it again (a) I see it in the folder list and (b) it will prompt me to say it is there and do I want to overwrite it etc

However, if I then go to Photoshop, for example, and click open or even just go to Finder and try and open the file - it is not listed. The prior files show but not the one/s I have just downloaded. I have tried closing the folder and opening again, changing from list to icon view etc to no avail.

An hour or some random time later the file will then 'appear' - is there any way I can stop MacOS from what I assume is caching folder contents so the file appears real time?

Prevent Facebook from hijacking GoodReads login on Safari desktop (Monterey)

When I visit https://www.goodreads.com (MacBook Pro 13" M1) and click on "Sign Up with Email", it takes me to the sign up page (https://www.goodreads.com/user/sign_up?email_signup=true). Unfortunately, before I can even begin to sign up, Facebook hijacks the page and tries to log me in.

I can easily use Firefox to prevent this from happening.

Although, I'm just curious (it seems like a fun problem to solve) as to how I can prevent Safari from allowing Facebook from hijacking the sign up process.

I have "Prevent cross-site tracking" ticked on the Privacy settings but that's not doing anything.

I used the web inspector (I'm not advanced in development, just HTML, CSS, and a little JS) and noticed something. It seems oauth could be the culprit, but that's just my limited knowledge talking.

Where do I go from here?

MacBook dead; get music from an iPhone?

My mom's MacBook Air recently bit the dust and thus took all her music with it. Since I do not own an adapter for the old SSD, it's been sent to archive first for when I get a proper adapter again. Problem is though that she still has a lot of music on her phone and would now like to burn a CD from it. With the problem of cost for a new car radio and the inevitable purchase of a new machine and adapter case for the old SSD, it would be cheaper to first take all the music from her iPhone to my Windows maschine and burn a CD here.

Problem is, most of the software I find online sound scammy and have insane prices for their full version. Knowing that there are open source reimplementation of MobileDevice libraries, I was wondering if there was a way to just get the music off her phone?

She has set aside but a single playlist with all the songs she wants to have burnt to a CD - so, all that I want to do is copy said playlist and songs within to my PC and burn that. I know how to do everything except get the music off the device.

It's unfortunate that there are many scammy products out there and it's hard to figure out which one of those is legitimately useful and which ones are just pure garbage... I am not looking for a software recommendation - but a method to simply get the songs from her phone so I can burn that CD for her.

How to stop the terrible audio sound when opening my M1 Macbook Air

I have a M1 MacBook Air (running Monterey 12.0.1) and when I open the lid it often (not always) plays a loud startup sound, except that it sounds distorted, like the audio interface is jamming. This isn't the physical/mechanical sound that others are talking about. I've gone to Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects and disabled "Play Sound on Startup" and "Play User Interface Sound Effects", but still it does not prevent the nasty sound from playing. This answer to a similar question suggests resetting the SMC (which requires removing the battery?) or resetting the NVRAM which is not possible with my model. Any other ideas?

csrutil: The OS environment does not allow changing security options. Ensure that the system was booted into recovery os via the standard user action.

This error happens in spite of that I have booted in Recovery mode and logged in to my account like the guide on the apple site.

How to solve iOS Files.app failure to connect to SMB server? "Operation not supported" / "a file with the same name already exists"

I've encountered at least two frustrating issues upon trying to connect to a new SMB server with the iOS files.app (main menu (...) -> connect to server).

This is with iOS 15.3 (latest as of writing); these issues were definitely also experienced with older iOS versions.

Issue 1: "The operation couldn't be completed: Operation not supported"

This happens with a server configured to restrict itself to SMB3 and above (SMB3, after all, has "only" been around since 2012).

Server logs report smth along the lines of:

smbd_smb2_request_error_ex: idx[1] status[NT_STATUS_NOT_SUPPORTED] || at ../../source3/smbd/smb2_negprot.c

Issue 2: "The file couldn't be saved because a file with the same name already exists"

I've hit this issue a number of times, typically when migrating from an old SMB server to a new one.

The same issue was raised on Apple's forums with a fair number of "me too's" but no workable solution has been provided...

Question: are there any workarounds/fixes to these files.app "quirks"?

I use youtube-dl to download youtube videos normally. To download private videos apparently it needs a cookies.txt which I can't seem to get from Safari 15.

So what methods exist to download private videos from YouTube on macOS without installing a new browser or compiling a Rust application manually?

I copied an SSH private key from my Linux machine to my M1 Mac. (I've attempted to do this both by uploading the cyphertext to a secrets manager as well as directly transfering the file) but when attempting to SSH to the same machine from each I can only succeed from the Linux machine.

Linux machine:

AFAICT these private keys are identical. However for some reason ssh-keygen does not fingerprint them thesame. Even though they have identical checksums. Could this be an issue with the M1 SoC? Or is there something much more obvious happening here?

Windows 7 on MacBook Pro installed successfully but restarts with a white screen

I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2009. Unfortunately, I erased my internal drive which led me to OS X Utilities only. When i clicked on reinstall OS X, it asked me to sign into my Apple ID. But it ended with a popup, "This item is temporarily unavailable." So I tried installing Windows 7 on that dead MacBook. I created a bootable usb, plugged it, pressed the power button with holding option key, selected my bootable usb(EFI Boot). After that, i saw an installation screen of Windows 7. All the process went good. I selected my internal Drive to install Windows. At last, i saw a popup, "Restarts in 10 seconds". But after the restart my MacBook turned on with a blank white screen only. Anyone please help me to get rid of this problem.

Reset Chinese Input Method candidate word frequency records?

This issue happens for all macOS 10.x. For Chinese input methods like Sucheng, it has a feature that can "Adjust word frequency" according to the frequency of usage of each word.

When I disabled the "Adjust word frequency", the word order remains the same, but no longer changes according to the frequency of usage.

How can I reset the word usage count to zero? I tried to remove and re-add the input method, the word frequency remains the same.

Signed into my one drive on someone else's computer and now they have access to my work files and can save their own files in my work account. WTF?

I have signed on my work OneDrive account on someone else's computer. I know I had logged out. Yet for some reasons they still have access to all of my One Drive files and the recent save as list makes it possible for them to save their own files to my work account. WTF is going on. F Microsoft. Anyone know what is going on? Please help. Thanks! I am on Mac.

How to disable M1 Mac auto-boot on lid open?

There have been answers that describe how this can be prevented for Intel Macs using an NVRAM setting, but this AutoBoot setting has no effect on an M1 Mac. There is a similar auto-boot setting in the M1 Mac NVRAM list, which is set to true by default, but setting it to false or %00 will cause the Mac to be unbootable. I have not found a way to prevent boot when the lid is open on an M1 Mac.

Coherence mode in a remote desktop app

Parallels Desktop had a great feature "Coherence mode" that displays windows, of the VM, in the macOS UI as if they're part of macOS making the experience much better.

I have a powerful Windows (Pro, non-server) machine to which I connect from macOS using Microsoft's Remote Desktop app. This Windows PC is, due to it's i9 CPU and 32GB memory, a better choice than using a (Parallels) VM.

What I'm looking for is a remote desktop app that mimics the Coherence mode of Parallels Desktop.

The protocol it uses isn't important for me (RDP, VNC, etc) as long as it works.

Is something like this available? I couldn't find that (yet).

NB: Free or paid doesn't matter, although when paid I'm not want to pay more than $100 per year.

homebrew. Cant start service. get "Bootstrap failed: 5: Input/output error - Postgres - Mac

I am trying to re-install Postgres via home-brew on Mac. I uninstalled Postgres, updated home-brew and ran the install command for brew install postgres

when I run brew services start postgresql

I get the below error message:

Bootstrap failed: 5: Input/output error Error: Failure while executing; /bin/launchctl bootstrap gui/501 /Users/edac/Library/LaunchAgents/homebrew.mxcl.postgresql.plist exited with 5.

When I try to start a server through the Postgres app I receive this message:

Required PostgreSQL version not installed    The data directory was initialized with PostgreSQL 13.    This copy of Postgres.app includes the following PostgreSQL versions: 14.    Please try downloading a different release of Postgres.app.

originally when I installed Postgres all I did was run the home-brew cli and install the app and I was good to go. Not sure what's gone wrong.

Noob struggling to tell terminal to install scikit-image 0.16.2 for Pyxelate

I'm using macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 I think this should be a very easy install, but apparently not. At first, I spotted terminal told me I don't have Cython. Ok. I installed it, then it gave me a long ass error command, which I have no idea to solve. I barely know what it meant. And Pyxelate can't take newest version of scikit-image. Is that my clang's file isn't match the pip3? If so, how can I fix that? I really have no idea.

MacBook Pro 13'' (2020) with Dell TB16

I'm currently able to use an external monitor via HDMI connection thanks to Thunderbolt3Unblocker but very often after unplugging the dock my laptop restarts due to an error: this seems related to a problem in windows resizing, is there any solution to that? Also, some other strange things are happening from time to time: twice or thrice in my 2 weeks of usage it happened that after unplugging and then reconnecting to the dock, the two USB-C ports of the side of the laptop where the dock was previously plugged in stopped sending any signal to the monitor, while the other two on the other side were still working fine (this seemed to happen after, when unplugged, I left the laptop go to sleep mode); display port connection is apparently not working at all, while mini display port works with a suboptimal resolution (but this is covered in this conversation: https://github.com/rgov/Thunderbolt3Unblocker/issues/28).

How can I change the SMB server address my Music files are on?

I store my iTunes library (now Music.app) on a Samba server. The server's DNS name has changed, but the volume/share name has not. The share is called Media and is mounted at /Volumes/Media

However, I am unable to sync my iPhone or play music in Music.app because it somehow still tried to connect to the old DNS name, even though from what I can tell the path names coded in the library don't contain the Samba server name. However when i try to sync my iPhone I get a message

*There was a problem connecting to the server "old.server.dns.name"

This happens even if I first use Go > Connect to server... in the finder and connect to the server, so my music is available at the desired path /Volumes/Media/music...

I don't want to delete my library and re-import because I'll lose all my star ratings and play counts.

How can I resolve this? How can I update the Samba server path for the music in my Music.app library?

It all started with the installation of software from mac-torrent but probably it was Adobe Flash Player. It said that I had an old one and the system needs to update, so I gave the right to install it. But I think it was a malware that opens ad sites like "one x bet", "aliexpress malls", and mac control site and some business sites.

The only way to stop this irritating behavior was to install Adblock, however, I don't want my mac to have that malware. Is there any way to get rid of it?

Repair Time Machine sparsebundle that will no longer mount

I messed up my Time Machine backup in some way. I'm no longer able to mount the sparsebundle file as I get an error stating that there are no mountable filesystems.

I used the hdiutil command to attach the sparsebundle file:

hdiutil attach -nomount -readwrite flattop.sparsebundle

which resulted in the following /dev/ devices:

/dev/disk2              Apple_partition_scheme  /dev/disk2s1            Apple_partition_map  /dev/disk2s2            Apple_HFSX

Afterwards I ran the fsch_hfs command to check the main volume (/dev/disk2s2):

fsck_hfs -drf /dev/disk2s2

This resulted in a notice that the Time Machine Backups volume is corrupt and needed to be repaired:

I thought this might be due to not running the fsck_hfs command as a su, so I tried it with sudo but this had the same result.

My sparsebundle file is on a Synology DS408 NAS and has been running without a problem for about 2 years now :(

Anyone an idea how to take this further?

UPDATE: As I suspected while writing this question I probably have a problem with read/write permissions. I now see the volume appearing in the Disk Utility and when I click on "Verify" I get the following output:

Verifying volume "Time Machine Backups"  Checking file systemJournal need to be replayed but volume is read-only  Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.  Detected a case-sensitive volume.  Checking extents overflow file.  Unused node is not erased (node = 3568)  Checking catalog file.  Keys out of order  The volume Time Machine Backups was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.  Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.

Can I simply chmod the sparsebundle file to set the right permissions?
