How can I find out when a file had been moved to trash? Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:35 AM PST I have my Mac configured to automatically delete objects 30 days after they have been moved to Trash (at Finder > Preferences > Advanced > Remove items from the Trash after 30 days). However, I have files in Trash of which I think that they have been moved there more than 30 days ago. Now I'm wondering how macOS keeps track of when an item has been moved to Trash, and how I can check that? |
Is there a way to force preview to open files in the center of the screen Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:15 AM PST Whenever I open a pdf file with preview the window goes automatically to the most left side of the screen, is there a way to make it open files in the center? In case it's relevant I use an external monitor. |

Use iCloud Drive as a backup of finished work Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:14 AM PST I have hundreds, if not thousands of completed projects on my Mac. I backup to an external hard-drive, using Time Machine. And once a month to a different external hard-drive, again using Time Machine, which I store off-site. I would also like to use iCloud Drive to backup my completed projects to. I presume all I would need to do is copy over the complete projects to the iCloud Drive folder? The projects will then be on my Macs hard drive AND a copy on iCloud? Is this correct or am I missing something? I don't need to synch the files with another computer or device. I don't need to backup documents I'm working on. All I want is to backup finished work to the cloud. |
MacBook Pro (2016) black screen but still working Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:59 AM PST I've a late 2016 MacBook Pro (4 Thunderbolt ports and Touch Bar), with Monterey 12.2 installed on it. The MacBook was perfectly working when the other day the screen suddenly went black while browsing on internet. In the last months I noticed that the brightness was loosing power, but now I can't see anything, although the Mac is working (for example once turned on the caps lock works). I tried all the tests about Safe Boot and NVRAM reset, but nothing. The issue is similar to the one in this question: Black screen on MacBook Pro login At the support they told me it can be the GPU and they asked for 600 $ to repair it! Did it happen to someone else who found a cheaper way to solve this? For example, I've seen some videos that show how to open the Mac and try to fix this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKejJwQ3MGU Thank you very much in advance for your help! It's really appreciated. |
Automatically start screen recording on iPhone 13 Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:48 AM PST The native iPhone 13 screen record function always counts down 3,2,1 before it starts, and requires manual activation. Is there a way to auto start the screen record whenever the phone is unlocked and in use? Perhaps, upon phone unlock, the user can be given dialog box that can ask the user if he wants to start the screen record, and if he chooses yes, the screen record starts immediately and not after counting 3,2,1. |

Tried to install Kali Linux and now I can't access macOS anymore Posted: 23 Feb 2022 08:22 AM PST It has been 3 days, I was trying to recover it but now I am out of options. I've tried installing Kali Linux on my Mac as a dual boot with a Linux partition of 20.5 GB inside my 500GB SSD and 1GB of swap Linux but after the first boot everything vanished and a black screen with a question mark came. So I searched websites and found @klanomath's answers about fixing the partition table and I messed it up, please help.
Please help, it's the only last data I have of my life. Sorry for my English. |
Missing Downloads folder icon in macOS Dock Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:43 AM PST I have changed my account and Home folder name. By the way, if I change from display as stack to display as folder the folder icon appears back: |
Use fn key as globe key on first-generation Magic Keyboard Posted: 23 Feb 2022 04:47 AM PST macOS lets you assign an action to the 🌐 (globe) key: This setting works on a modern keyboard with combined 🌐 fn key: But my first-generation Magic Keyboard doesn't have the globe symbol on its fn key: This seems to be more than just a visual difference. On my Magic Keyboard, it only works as a plain fn key, and the action assigned to the 🌐 key ("Show Emoji & Symbols") doesn't work. Is there a way to have the first-generation Magic Keyboard's fn key act like a modern 🌐 fn key? |
Disable certificate pinning on MacOS Posted: 23 Feb 2022 04:23 AM PST I'm behind a proxy and some websites don't work, in particular ones related to MacOS update, app store etc. I imported the proxy certificate to the MacOS keychain. When I go to https://apps.apple.com with Safari I can't proceed to the website even if I add the certificate manually to the trust store. The error during visiting the site is: "certificates do not meet pinning requirements". The same site works when using Chrome which also uses KeyChain. So Safari and other native MacOS apps still seem to do something different and sometimes ignore certificates for proxies. Is there some way to disable this pinning? |
Instagram desktop app for mac? [closed] Posted: 23 Feb 2022 04:09 AM PST Are there any Mac apps out there that will give me all the functionality of using IG on a smartphone? I know there are different ways of using IG through a desktop browser but it still doesn't give the same functionality as using the mobile app (e.g. editing posts, posting stories etc). I've looked on the Mac app store but there appears to be nothing |
Some icons changed after changing username and home folder name Posted: 23 Feb 2022 03:35 AM PST I have changed my username and home folder name in macOS Monterey and now the sidebar icons were just generic. I unchecked and checked back all of them in Finder's preferences and all changed back except Desktop icon. I tried to remove it from the sidebar and then drag it there from my home folder but it still shows like this: If I select get info I see the correct icon though: Any idea how can I get the correct icon back in sidebar? |
Did the Apple Newton employ machine learning for handwriting recognition? Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:55 AM PST We know that the Apple Newton and the Messagepad would recognize handwriting on the digital screen with the stylus based on the user training it to their style. My question is: Did the Apple Newton employ machine learning for handwriting recognition? |

How can I restore my Finder Sidebar Icons? Posted: 23 Feb 2022 03:36 AM PST I had to rename my user and home folder recently, but did it according to the official guide from Apple. Initially, all icons in the sidebar of Finder appeared as a generic folder. Removing and re-adding them fixed the issue for all icons, except the Desktop icon. What I've tried/checked
Did anyone run into the same issue yet and was able to fix it? Running macOS 12.2.1 on a 16-inch 2021 MacBook Pro. |
Grub Boot Loader error when installing Kali Linux on MacBook Pro Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:32 AM PST

I press continue… "No boot loader has been installed, either because you chose not to or because your specific architecture doesn't support a boot loader yet. You will need to boot manually with the /vmlinuz kernel on partition /dev/sdd3 and root-/dev/sdd3 quiet passed as a kernel argument."

Sort 80,412 files into folders based on name begins with Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:26 AM PST Situation:
I need to take the first word, find all files that begin with that word, and create a folder named with that word. Repeat for all files. The main complication is that sometimes a name begins with multiple capitals, followed by a word that also begins with a capital (i.e. "AWDRebecca..."). Not sure how to resolve that, but I'm fine with doing some manual cleanup afterwards if I get folders with "AWDRebecca", "AWDReports", "AWDNovember", but having a folder "A" will make it harder. |

VPN connection terminates: L2TP failed to set port-mapping for en0, errorCode: -65564 Posted: 23 Feb 2022 05:05 AM PST The following issue surfaced last week and I am not sure anymore if this happened before or after I upgraded to Monterey. I am using a VPN connection for work but since last week this connection only lasts for 60 to 90 seconds. In the first 60 seconds everything is working. The machine is connected and has internet. After these 60 seconds the internet connection stops working and around 30 seconds later the VPN client tells me that the VPN connection has been terminated. Now, after some trying around it was suggested to me to try to access the internet from another connection so I switched from my home router to a mobile hot spot. And there you go. With the mobile hot spot everything is working fine for hours. Clearly, this makes the router the main suspect but I have been working with it for months now and since I didn't touch it, I find it hard to believe that it is the cause. I've searched the internet for this issue but I couldn't find anything useful. Is there anything I can do? At least to get more information about where this issue truly originates from? Logging outputI took a look at the Below you can look at both entire sessions. Working (mobile hot spot) Not working (router)Router event logEstablishing the VPN connection, I can see these log entries in my router's event log: |
Loss of numerical keypad to enter alarm times Posted: 23 Feb 2022 08:07 AM PST For a while within the past year, I was delighted to find that my iPhone allowed me to enter an alarm time using a numerical keypad instead of the simulated dials. Now, it has reverted to the dials. I wonder whether it is because I recently upgraded from iOS 14.4 to 15.2.1. Was this in fact determined by the iOS version? I'm a fan of installing as few apps as possible, and relying on native functionality. Is there any way to get the numerical keypad back without installing an app? |

PhpMyAdmin gives lots of deprecation notices Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:27 AM PST I've just installed httpd, php & phpmyadmin with homebrew. Versions are : Now, when I try to use phpmyadmin, just at the login page, I already get:
In my understanding, phpmyadmin uses deprecated php features. There is no newer phpmyadmin version. Should I just hide these notices (how?) or is there something cleaner I can do? Should I use a older php version? |
Swift Playgrounds on MacOS performs badly, spinning up the fans and working the CPU Posted: 23 Feb 2022 04:04 AM PST Using the basic "Learn to Code 1" playground results in the MacBooks that I've tested on, including a 2020 MacBook Air, working far harder than I'd expect. The fans spin up and the CPU usage increases more than I'd expect. The performance settles down if I leave the application running, I see the high load whenever I type and change the program. The app is compiling some Swift code and displaying a fairly simple game interface to show the results. What can account for this poor performance on a capable machine? |
Can't scroll using the touch screen on iOS devices within vim Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:51 AM PST Over the past days I've started to do my day-to-day (development) work on my iPad instead of the MacBook. I have the MacBook Pro always online and available to connect to over ssh but have a problem with vim over ssh (and screen, but without screen the behavior is the same). Whichever Terminal App I've tried, I couldn't get mouse scrolling to work with the touch screen. If I use another computer to connect to the MacBook, I can scroll through my code with the mouse or the touchpad (with For me, the primary question is: Is this even possible or am I wasting time here? |
