fsroot tree is invalid. All data still on disk but only 10% normally visible

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 03:40 AM PST

I woke up today to start working on an audio project but upon loading I got some missing files errors. When I went to check, indeed, most of the folders I had shut the computer down with the night before were now not visible in the list. I ran Disk Drill and it is showing me everything (accessible and intact) as "Existing files" and being recoverable. They just aren't included by my file system in the list of folders any more. They are like ghost folders. I have one TimeMachine snapshot from July which works but it's too far back to be a satisfying solution. So I'm trying to figure out how I can fix the file system and get the folders back.

Why is my Catalina installation throwing up errors about SecurityAgent / login keychain overnight, and showing a grey lock screen?

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 02:43 AM PST

This is a slightly difficult issue to describe precisely but I'll do my best. About six weeks ago, my installation of Catalina (10.15.7, MacBook Pro 13" 2020 / MacBookPro16,2) started to exhibit some strange behaviour when left running overnight (or possibly: when left running unattended for several hours).

Sometimes, but by no means every day, I'll return to the machine in the morning and wake the screen to see a grey lock screen (no background image) and a prompt that will often only accept my password (i.e. not Touch ID). Upon unlocking the machine I'll see a series of errors and password prompts, which seem to be stuck in a loop (or maybe there are just enough of them queued up that it seems like a loop). These messages include:

Unapproved caller. SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software --- Unrecoverable error. SecurityAgent was unable to create requested mechanism builtin:unlock-keychain. --- accountsd wants to use the "login" keychain. Please enter the keychain password. --- callservicesd wants to use the "login" keychain. Please enter the keychain password. --- identityservicesd wants to use the "login" keychain. Please enter the keychain password. --- CallHistorySyncHelper wants to use the "login" keychain. Please enter the keychain password. --- assistantd wants to use the "login" keychain. Please enter the keychain password. --- CommCenter wants to use the "login" keychain. Please enter the keychain password.

The system will give the appearance of being usable but isn't really. Symptoms include:

  • Finder and Dock repeatedly restarting
  • Generally unable to interact with menubar, e.g. to shut down
  • Inconsistent ability to tab between apps and interact with or quit them
  • Unable to start new apps from Dock or menubar shortcuts (icons just bounce for a while)

So far I have never been able to cleanly shut down the machine in this state and have had to power it off using the Touch ID / power button.

When booting back up, everything seems fine except sometimes Touch ID preferences have been reset (i.e. I have to enrol my finger again) and on one occasion my saved Bluetooth devices, except for mouse and keyboard, were deleted. For what it's worth, it does seem that if I "catch" the problem quickly enough, e.g. returning to the machine late at night, the damage is more limited and Touch ID is not always reset, however the other issues remain. I have also tried putting the machine into standby overnight by closing the lid, rather than leaving it running, but at least once the issue has still occurred (presumably the machine is waking up at some point overnight to do something).

I'm a bit stumped as to how to diagnose this. My hunch is that it's something to do with the system somehow losing access to Keychain – based on mentions in the error messages above. I did have iCloud Keychain enabled previously, but disabled it a couple of weeks ago, and the issue has happened at least once since then.

An answer to another question mentions Keychain permissions – these are mine, in case they're relevant:

# /Library/Keychains: 0 drwxr-xr-x 9 root wheel 288B 9 Feb 08:07 Keychains # /Library/Keychains/System.keychain 248 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 120K 7 Jan 13:16 /Library/Keychains/System.keychain # ~/Library/Keychains/ [with redactions] total 928 0 drwx--x--x 7 james staff 224B 14 Feb 10:07 . 0 drwx------@ 85 james staff 2.7K 10 Feb 12:22 .. 0 -r--r--r-- 1 james staff 0B 7 Dec 2020 .XXXXXXXXXX 0 -r-------- 1 james staff 0B 7 Dec 2020 .XXXXXXXXXX 0 drwx------ 11 james staff 352B 14 Feb 09:06 XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX 880 -rw-r--r--@ 1 james staff 439K 14 Feb 10:07 login.keychain-db 48 -rw------- 1 james staff 23K 14 Feb 09:41 metadata.keychain-db

Any light that anyone might be able to shed on this would be much appreciated! I have a TODO list item to upgrade to Big Sur, at which stage this might become moot, but until then I would really like to understand it better and avoid having to do these forced-shutdowns every now and then.

Thanks for reading and if I can provide any more info or data please ask.

What are the accountsKeychainImport entries in Keychain Access?

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 01:44 AM PST

I have noted some accountsKeychainImport files in the macOS Keychain Access application:

accountsKeychainImport

A Google search for accountsKeychainImport brought up ZERO hits (and lot's of hits for „accounts Keychain Import" which where not at all helpful).

Does anyone know where these entries come from and how to delete them?

"Your passcode is required to enable Touch ID". often appears when I return to the computer and forces me to restart

Mac Book Air 2020 Monterey 12.2.1

This annoying problem seems random. It does not seem to happen depending on when I last used the machine. Or whether the lid is shut. I have fiddled with the settings in System Prefs Users and Groups, Touch ID, Password, and Privacy. I tried getting help from Apple. Generally the machine works just fine while I am using it.

Why are some videos appearing to make my screen extremely bright

Posted: 13 Feb 2022 10:59 PM PST

I'm browsing some videos, and I find that on some videos they appear to be extremely bright; even hurting my eyes a little. It doesn't happen with all videos, but a select few. They seem to bypass my macbook's current brightness level and sets it's own brightness to the max.

Why exactly are some of these videos blinding? is it a bug? and how do I prevent it prior to Apple fixing it?

It appears when I screenshot it, the image appears that only the video has been deep-fried or oversaturated, or just too bright. It's more noticeable on some videos than others when you compare the image to yourself directly looking at the screen with the video.

Erase iPhone 7 without service

Posted: 13 Feb 2022 10:24 PM PST

The wifi on my child's iPhone 7 stopped working, so we got an iPhone SE to replace it. Now we want to erase the old phone, but we cannot turn off "Find My" because there is no apparent way to connect to an Apple server: no phone service because that's been transferred to the new phone, no wifi because wifi is broken on this phone. I can connect it directly to a Mac desktop, but the "Restore" option refuses to work without first disabling "Find My". We can try to disable "Find My" by going directly to iCloud.com/find, but of course the old phone doesn't know about this because it can't connect to anything.

So what do we do?

Maybe temporarily restore phone service to the old phone? How do we do that? Any other options?

Mathway.com can get to my iOS camera

Posted: 13 Feb 2022 08:06 PM PST

Mathway.com has a keyboard on their site that looks like this when loaded into iOS safari.

safari page

When you click on the camera icon, it loads the phones camera ready to take a picture. I would have expected it to ask me, or since Safari is set to "deny" access to the camera, it to just not work.

But it does, and with no asking of any kind.

At first, I thought it was a custom keyboard, but if I tap in the white space and drag up the keyboard goes too. (Not normal for iOS keyboards, but fairly normal for a webpage).

Also, I did not install or give any permissions for a custom keyboard for that site.

So it seems this "keyboard" is just part of the site.

So how is it getting access to the camera so easily?

Error 4041 during iPad factory reset

Posted: 13 Feb 2022 07:54 PM PST

I have an iPad that is having issues during a factory reset. I start the process by plugging it into my Mac while the iPad is powering up, so that it enters Recovery mode.

Once in Recovery Mode, I see a prompt which says There is a problem with the iPad "iPad" that requires it to be updated or restored. I click "Update" and after some time, I get another prompt which says If your iPad can't be updated, you will need to restore it to its factory settings. I click "Update" again, after which Finder says the update is being downloaded.

About two minutes later, I see an error dialog box with the text The iPad "iPad" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (4041).

See bottom of my question for screenshots.

I would like to note some context: my friend works for [large-tech-company] and was lent this device for their work. The device has no access to corporate resources (no MDM installed, only iCloud AFAIK). I asked said friend if I could borrow the device to try it out; they said yes but also that they forgot their password. Hence, I tried using a factory reset.

How can I fix this? I can't get it back to a working state. I am hesitant to bring this to an Apple store as they may report the device as stolen to [large-tech-company], which could cause me more trouble than if I just explained it to my friend. I don't see any option other than explaining to my friend that I broke their device and that they need to explain this to their employer.

I feel really dumb for thinking a factory reset would have worked, surely [large-tech-company] has a deal with Apple to ship a custom OS for employees (my friend opened the iPad from its box which is why I thought there wasn't an issue with factory reset). I also realize that there is nothing in my story which differentiates me from someone who has stolen a company device and is trying to restore it to prepare it to be sold. So if you don't feel comfortable helping, then I understand.

Technical notes:

  • My Mac is running MacOS 12.2.1.
  • I used two different USB-C cables, with the same result.
  • Clicking "Restore" instead of "Update" causes the same issue.
  • After I get the 4041 error, Finder is no longer able to try the update again (it just gets stuck at a loading page). Killing the process doesn't help; only way to retry the whole process is to restart my Mac.

switch back and forth between Chrome windows using Apple Script

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 01:00 AM PST

I'd like to have a script that gets some input on one Chrome window, switches to another Chrome Window to process it, and then returns to the original window.

I can get the Chrome window title from the original window, process on the second window, but I'm failing to return to the original window.

this is the working code to get the Window title:

my getCurrentWindowTitle() my returnToOriginalWindow() global frontApp, frontAppName, windowTitle set windowTitle to "" on getCurrentWindowTitle() tell application "System Events" set frontApp to first application process whose frontmost is true set frontAppName to name of frontApp tell process frontAppName tell (1st window whose value of attribute "AXMain" is true) set windowTitle to value of attribute "AXTitle" end tell end tell end tell end getCurrentWindowTitle

And this is the code bit which I'm struggling to tweak so I can return to the original window:

on returnToOriginalWindow() tell application "Google Chrome" to set index of window 1 where title contains windowTitle to 1 delay 0.05 do shell script "open -a Google\\ Chrome" end returnToOriginalWindow

Any insights on how to test, develop, fix this are really appreciated.

Very slow to establish a TCP connection with the router

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 03:01 AM PST

I am using macOS 11.4 and padavan firmware on the router. It's quite slow (a few to tens of seconds) when I connect to the router's admin page from macOS, and tcpdump showed that a lot of tcp connections are stuck at the first handshake, the router didn't reply with SYN/ACK after macOS sent SYN.

There's no such problem when I connect to the router from another device or visit another website from macOS.

Are there special options/headers from macOS' tcp package?

Graphics glitch - checkered pattern in Chrome

Posted: 13 Feb 2022 11:03 PM PST

I've had this MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) for a while now, but today it glitched out with huge green fields in all apps.

After a reboot I see this checkered black/green glitch pattern in Google Chrome on some sites, in some "sizes". Basically if I resize the browser window the glitch goes away, but if I resize it too much it comes back.

Happens both on the internal and on external display.

I am hoping this is a software glitch, but I am afraid it's my graphics card. Would be very grateful if someone knows the answer.

Here's the stackoverflow logo with the glitch:

How to access older iPhone auto-backups / restore lost Safari cards?

Posted: 13 Feb 2022 08:06 PM PST

Recently I've lost all my open Safari cards on my iPhone. Since i want to move my data to a new model anyway, I was just disabling wifi every time I plugged it to the charger in order to not let it auto-backup. I did not turn off the backup function, because I was too scared of the iThreat, threatening they'll delete all my iCloud files, backups, photos, etc. if i cancel anything iCloud-related. So sadly, that one time I forgot to turn off the wifi, and it did back up automatically. Since I've tried doing a computer backup many times before on many different PC's and cables, changing settings, including replacing the whole charging port, I couldn't do it, so iCloud backups are the only ones I could make. Now, as you might have guessed, the latest backup doesn't contain any of those lost 48 open cards, and the latest backup i did manually is almost half-year old.

Is there any way I can get access to the older AUTOMATIC iCloud backup? If not, how do I get my cards back? They couldn't just disappear without the trace of I didn't physically press 'delete' button right?? 😰

softwareupdate shows 2 updates for Command Line Tools - get rid of one entry

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 02:00 AM PST

I am on macOS Catalina 10.15.6 (19G2021) and softwareupdate as well as graphical "Softwareupdate" in "System settings" show two updates for Command Line Tools:

$ softwareupdate --list Software Update Tool Finding available software Software Update found the following new or updated software: * Label: Command Line Tools beta 5 for Xcode-12.0 Title: Command Line Tools beta 5 for Xcode, Version: 12.0, Size: 442912K, Recommended: YES, * Label: Safari14.0CatalinaAuto-14.0 Title: Safari, Version: 14.0, Size: 65417K, Recommended: YES, * Label: Command Line Tools for Xcode-12.0 Title: Command Line Tools for Xcode, Version: 12.0, Size: 429595K, Recommended: YES,

beta 5 was proposed to me for a couple of weeks now, but I did not want to install it. Why did I end up with beta 5 and how do I get rid of the duplicate here?

How to replace fusion drive and restore MacOS?

Upgrading to Catalina from Mojave stuck at "Estimating time remaining" for days!

Posted: 13 Feb 2022 10:28 PM PST

I was upgrading my 2015 Macbook Pro running Mojave to Catalina. It is stuck at a black screen with the Apple logo and "Estimating time remaining" for several days now.

During that time, I hard rebooted several times out of frustration after hours of waiting, each time I got a normal-looking login window and I then input my username and password and got logged in, after which it resumed to the same black screen with the Apple logo and "Estimating time remaining". But the progress indicator kept at approximately the same location which is about 1/6 of the entire length. There were also a few times when the machine shut down itself and when I found out about it I pressed the power button to start it manually. After that the normal-looking login window showed up again and I then input my username and password to log in. And the same black screen with the Apple logo and "Estimating time remaining" show up again but the progress indicator stayed at approximately the same place. It is the third day it has been doing that now. What should I do?

Safari: kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 1 on local (HTML) files

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 01:01 AM PST

I keep a lot of local HTML files on my machine, including my home page. Whenever I first open Safari, and often when going to any local file, I will receive an error. Hitting refresh (or, for the home page, the home button again) fixes the problem... until the next time you try to go anywhere.

Usually opening a link in a new tab prevents this from occurring; opening a link in the same tab almost always sees the error.

I realize "wait for Apple to get around to fixing it" is a valid answer; I also realize "use a different browser" is a valid answer. I'm hoping, instead, for a setting change I can make, or HTML tag I can add to my metric badger-load of files, to prevent this error without swapping browsers or waiting for an update (since it's already been happening for quite some time).

The error:

Safari Can't Open the Page

Safari can't open the page. The error is "The operation couldn't be completed.

(kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 1.)" (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork:1)

Some potentially useful information:

macOS Mojave Version 10.14.4 (On a desktop, if that matters.)

Safari Version 12.1 (14607.1.40.1.4)
