Backslash on German MacBook Keyboard

I've recently bought a 2019 MacBook Pro with a German keyboard and am encountering some difficulties. Previously, I had been a windows user and my frequent use of Latex requires me to use backslash quite a bit in programming. I really enjoyed the Windows feature of 'Alt'+9 (Might not be 9, but you get the idea) being a backslash, yet on Apple with a German keyboard, the procedure is quite cumbersome. I saw the feature of shortcuts, but as far as I can discern, this only refers to Apps, not the keyboard as a whole. I saw this unanswered question here and later found the platform Ukulele, which seems very cumbersome though. Is there any way to be able to get a backslash pressing just two keys without Ukulele?

I have a osas script that requires to auto mount some network folders for AD users in our mac os catalina. whenever it tries to load, it asks for permission from the user, and the only solution if the user has clicked dont allow, is to delete the user home folder by logging him out and deleting from an admin account, which is time consuming. I have tried giving permission from the security preferences to osasscript, but that does not help in this, is there a way to delete the security cache or preferences when the user is still logged in, or any other alternative solution? thank you all

Why do I need to reboot mac to activate HDMI device sound?

MacBook Air, Retina, 13-inch, 2019 Running Big Sur

Using USB-C to HDMI adaptors, many of them, MacBook Air sound preference center cannot recognize the device it is plugged to (HDMI cable connects the adaptor to the TV monitor; sound on TV monitors has been tested)

Video is fine

Troubleshoot this on two different screens, and two different projectors (hooked to speakers)

Troubleshoot while being powered on (i.e. with AC plugged in) No sound nor device detected (in the sound panel) in every case.

In each case, the sound is being played through the MacBook Air internal speakers.

I need to reboot the laptop and some times turn off the laptop and then turn on in order to start working.

I've already tried to stop and start audio drivers but that doesn't work. Is there a command to restart usb-c drivers on mac or any other command to restore the detection of the device without rebooting?

I wonder if there's any equivalent terminal command that can output the same data displayed when the I search for the domain user Under Users in the OD node (/Active Directory/MYCOMP/...)

the data is a dictionary with fields like AltSecurityIdentities, dsAttrTypeNative:.. , and more.

Slow write speed on APFS external SSD

The SSD is SanDisk Extreme Pro V2, with original cable, formatted APFS (non-encrypted). OS is 12.0.1. There's 10GB of free space. Write speed used to be close to read speed, about 500MB/s. Now it's about 40MB/s. I don't know if it's related to fragmentation. APFS defragment was disabled by default. Also I don't know whether trim is enabled.

How do I turn off the Magic Keyboard (A1644)?

I have the Apple Magic Keyboard model A1644, which was released in 2015:

Both this and the Magic Trackpad 2 have switches that allow you to turn it on (green) or off (white). I find that the switch on the trackpad works just fine. However, oftentimes when I try to turn off my keyboard and put it in my bag, I'll find out that the keyboard was on the entire time and draining my computer's battery due to random keystrokes being tapped. It's as though the hardware switch is broken or not respected by the keyboard.

Is there any way to shut off this keyboard and ensure it's shut off?

Boot Camp disappears (Big Sur)

After running Boot Camp Assistant on Big Sur and getting a message about successful merge of my Boot Camp partition, the free space was not added to the macOS partition and is not shown in the Disk Utility app.

After running diskutil list this is shown as "free space":

How can I merge this free space and my Big Sur partition without formatting everything, if possible?

Why does installing macOS Catalina and later on to a USB thumb drive fail?

To get these possibilities out of the way at the start:

  • I'm not referring to a macOS installer (I can do that), but a full macOS with a Finder, etc.
  • I'm specifically referring to a thumb drive (I can do this to an external SSD, but they don't fit in my pocket).
  • I know I use do target disk mode insteal, but that's not always convenient (see fit a Mac in my pocket).
  • Booting from external drives is completely enabled for the T2 macs I've worked on for trying this (again, it works on the external SSD).
  • Multiple drives, multiple sizes, multiple model Macs
  • Catalina and Big Sur both have this issue
  • Most of the machines I've used have never been in Jamf

Here is the setup and my problem: I work on Macs frequently, and occasionally they won't boot. In the last few years, I've used an external boot volume running macOS Mojave to fix machines when this happens. The latest (and last) Intel computers can only run Big Sur and Monterey. So I need to update my thumb drive. When I do this, I start installing macOS to an external volume, I select an external thumb drive that is large enough (64, 128, and 256G drives tested) and formatted for one APFS volume. The installer reboots as expected.

If it's a T2 Mac, the installer continues to the black apple boot screen, but eventually gets in a crash screen loop. If it's a non-T2 mac, it hangs on the black boot screen when the progress bar is half way, even left for a literal week.

Again, this process works for an external SSD, so the process is sound.

The question: What would make the thumb drive act different than external USB drives to cause the failure to complete the installation and can anything be done about it?

I have two instances of the Quicktime application running. I use two different video sources (Facetime camera and iPhone camera via USB), and I use "Movie recording" to record them. I also have Spotify running.

I want to initiate "Record" in both Quicktime apps as well as initiate the "Play" command on the Spotify app at the same time via one key press.

I have read this solution using Automator to create a Service with a shortcut here https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/334857/439929.

on run      tell first document of application "QuickTime Player" to start  end run

I created a service for both QT apps and assigned the same keyboard shortcut to start both. I also assigned a shortcut to stop recording. When I tested, two problems occurred:

  1. Only the second instance of QT player will record, irrespective of which is in the foreground.
  2. When I stopped recording, a dialogue with "Finishing Recording" came up and would not disappear, even though the recording was finished. This doesn't happen when stopping the recording by clicking the on screen stop button.

I then added Spotify using the same process, with the same keyboard combination. Spotify will only play when the QT apps are disabled in System Preferences.

I realise my approach is flawed, but I'm not sure if there is a way to achieve this. Any help would be appreciated!

Can't import FaceTime Live Photos to Windows 10

I have an iPhone XS max (iOS 14.6) and I'm trying to import photos taken during a FaceTime call to my PC running windows 10.

Using the photos app on windows 10, I can import photos and videos fine, and Live Photos taken with the camera will give me a jpeg and mp4. the importing process seems to go through the selected photos fine until it reaches a FaceTime photo, where it will import the still and fail when trying to import the mp4. the import process then terminates, leaving me with whatever photos imported up until that point.

I've tried navigating the phone's storage in file explorer (This PC\Apple iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM) and manually copying the .mp4, but the copied file ends up 0kb in size despite showing a file size on the original copy.

I don't want to use a cloud service as my upload speed is terrible and it would take much too long.

I can't find any results on Google even remotely similar to my issue, and I couldn't get much help asking on the Apple forums unfortunately.

Updating firmware to get OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD to show via Macbook Air

Basically I am trying to install a brand new Aura Pro X2 480gb SSD into a Macbook Air 2014, the original apple SSD has failed and is not seen by the Macbook Air. I know the Aura Pro X2 requires High Sierra as the previous system so the firmware updates via the Macbook Air.

But for some reason whenever I try to install High Sierra using a bootable installer via the Macbook Air, I get an error message stating that the computer is missing firmware partition on any device. I try to install High Sierra on to, been it a USB key or an external hard drive etc.

Is there anyway I can get High Sierra installed via a USB or external hard drive so the firmware partition updates, so I can then see the new Auro Pro X2 480gb SSD and install new system on to it?

I've tried formatting USB keys and hard drives in different ways but keep getting the missing firmware partition message on anything I do.

I have an old 2008 Mac Pro and also a 2011 Mac mini, if those can be useful in anyway to solving this issue I have.

Why will my MacBook Pro (15" Late 2016) not power on after disabling 'Boot on Lid Open'?

I wanted to disable the boot/power on by opening the lid. To do so, I entered the below command in the terminal

sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03

Post that, I shut down the laptop by going to the Top Left Apple icon. After shut down, I closed the lid. I opened the lid and Voila, it showed the battery indicator 100% on the screen and then the screen went dark. Reasonable, but not for me. This is where my problem starts, as my laptop won't start anymore.

I have taken the below troubleshooting steps.

  • Press the Power Button
  • Press and Hold the Power Button from 3-10 seconds, (tried all)
  • Tried resetting NVRAM
  • Tried resetting the SMC, ^ Control ⇧ Shift ⌥ Option ⦿ Power for 10 seconds.
    ( I am not sure about SMC reset, as the power was not turning on)
  • Opened the back lid, disconnected battery connectors for 60 hrs, hoping SMC would reset. Plugged in the charger, and opened the lid, it showed no battery in red on the screen. No power on until now
  • Removed the charger, connected the battery, opened the lid and we are back to square one. It shows the battery percentage and the screen goes dark.

I am looking for solutions to start the laptop. I don't know what I have done wrong, a simple command to disable the boot on by opening the lid and I am stuck with my MacBook Pro not starting.

PS: Apple Service Centre are closed, as we are still in lockdown. I am posting a question after a long time, apologies for any improper format.

Uninstalled apps on iPhone still show up in Settings

iPhone 8+ iOS 13.5.1

I deleted the app and it still shows up in Settings, so I could not re-download it again. In the App Store, the app just says Open.

I've tried shutting it down multiple times (didn't work).The app is grey with lines and it's Snapchat.

How can I remove it from Settings?

remindd sometimes spikes over 100-200% CPU usage

Over the past few months, I have experienced my MacBook turning on its fans because of high CPU usage. When that happens, I see that a process called remindd is using 100-300% CPU for a long time, usually more than 10 minutes. It seems this process belongs to the reminders app, which I do use, but it doesn't make any sense that the app has such a high CPU usage. This is not a one time thing, it happened at least 5 times in the last few weeks. I usually ended up killing the process or restarting my Mac. Quitting the reminders app does not stop the process.

What can I do to prevent this?

I would like to find out, prior to installation, what permissions an iOS app will ask for.

I understand that granting these permissions is up to me and that no permissions are granted automatically. However, my decision to install an app at all is very much influenced by how over-reaching the permission requests are going to be.

So, without actually installing the iOS app, how can I look up the app and see what permissions it will ask to use ?

I believe the google play store allows you to check this on the play store itself, prior to downloading - how can I do this in the app store ?

How to export downloaded PDFs from iBooks on iOS to a computer?

My wife has an iPad Air 2 running iOS 12.4.1. She has saved many PDF files into iBooks over the years from various sources such as websites.

Her iPad is dying, and she doesn't want to lose the PDFs.

She has an ancient Mac laptop running Yosemite, but the books refuse to sync to iBooks on that. We installed a trial of iExplorer but I couldn't find any of the PDFs in the directory structure.

How can we export the PDFs - either to iBooks on the Mac, or (preferably) as normal PDF files? Doing them one-by-one (e.g. by emailing each, or copying to dropbox) would not be feasible, as there are hundreds of them.

I have looked at similar questions on this forum, but have not found a solution that works for us.

iMail rules are very slow

After I updated my Mac to Mojave, the mail app became very slow, particularly with the rules.

I have rebuilt mailbox, restarted Mac and Mail multiple times.

My account connects to MS Exchange.

It takes ages to open rules, scroll down and add new senders to a rule I have created to mark "spam" and move all emails from this sender to junk folder. I have checked today, and to run the rule on one email takes about 1 minute. Any ideas?

Removed app is still available - how to remove it?

I just removed Calibre app via Finder Cmd+Backspace. The app cannot be found via F4 key now. But it is still available via context menu "open with", even two versions there. So how app can be really removed?

Can an iPad become damaged by leaving it in a bathroom during and after a shower?

I leave my iPad Mini 3 in my bathroom most of the time. If you must know, I enjoy reading my iPad while using the toilet.

I take daily showers in this bathroom. Showering produces steam and increases the humidity in the bathroom. I run the bathroom fan after showering for about 10 minutes, like one should, to remove much of the humidity.

The bathroom is very small. While I never actually spill water on my iPad, I'm sure that it is exposed to the moist air.

Can this moist air damage the iPad?

Can the moist air find its way inside of the iPad, resulting in the formation of condensation inside of the iPad? I'm sure that the iPad was not designed to have water inside of it.

The bottom line: Is it necessary to remove the iPad from the bathroom every time that I shower?

Is there a way to use Google Sheets filter views on IOS?

I made a sheet in Google Sheets on the desktop with several filter views. Then I opened the sheet in the Google Sheets app on my iPhone. In the iPhone app menu, there is an option to create a filter, but I don't see any way to access my existing filter views.

Is this possible?

I have a Wacom Graphire 4 CTE-640, silver. It reacts as though the pen is always down, no matter how I try to use it. The area responds, but I have to lift my hand completely for the pen to stop.

I am running Mac OS X El Capitan on a MacBook Pro.

Using macOS Sierra (latest 10.12.1) on iMac and iPhone (iOS 10), copy/paste (Universal Clipboard) doesn't work. All necessary connections and accounts are turned on and connected.

Why does my brew installation not work?

I installed brew before, but it does not work now.

When I run brew, it gives me the error -bash: brew: command not found

So I tried to reinstall using the code 

ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

But it gives me another one :

It appears Homebrew is already installed. If your intent is to reinstall you should do the following before running this installer again: rm -rf /usr/local/Cellar /usr/local/.git && brew cleanup

If I use the command rm -rf /usr/local/Cellar /usr/local/.git && brew cleanup, it gives back the first error : -bash: brew: command not found

What should I do now?
