Automatic updates of Safari Extensions prompting to quit Safari Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:33 AM PST Using Safari 15, every morning I open up my Mac and see an alert that an extension is trying to reboot Safari:
How can I prevent these alerts? Can extensions instead be set to update, silently, the next time Safari is quit? I'm seeing this alert frequently for a few extensions that have an aggressive update schedule, and I don't always want to reboot Safari daily. I would still like for the extensions to update the next time Safari is restarted, but I don't want to be prompted to quit and relaunch Safari every time an extension has an update. |
Is it possible to change Fn keys behavior for the non-fn layer? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:24 AM PST I know I can change the function row to work as Fn keys and then use Fn keys as shortcuts. That's not what I want to do. What I want to do is change the default actions of the fn row when not in the Fn mode. So say F4 alternate is spotlight and F3 alternate is mission control on 2021 MacBook Pros. I wanna customize these to be something else, but I still want to use F4 and F3 like normal in apps for shortcuts, where I need F3 and F4. Is it possible to modify the non-fn layer behavior to do something else? I tried to press these buttons when selecting keys for shortcuts, but nothing happened, I could only use the Fn layer. I am willing to use a 3rd party for this, if it's stable. |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 09:50 AM PST I have a multi-monitor setup and want to be able to type into a shell on one monitor while I have a document pulled up on the other monitor, and I want to scroll through the document without my hands leaving the keyboard or interrupting the flow of typing into the shell. What is the best way to accomplish this? I am running OS X Monterey on a 2019 MBP. |
iPhone private MAC address not working? 2 MAC addresses appear in my router Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:46 AM PST I just connected my iPhone to a brand new router and saw that 2 new MAC addresses appeared in connected devices. By disabling the "Private address" feature I could verify that both MAC addresses belong to my iPhone. I understand that this is a privacy feature, but what's the point if my hardware address shows up anyway? This was my first time connecting to this network and the private address feature is enabled by default. I have tested this on 2 routers, same thing with this iPhone. However, when using an Android device with the private address feature, only the spoofed MAC appears in my devices list. Is this an iOS bug? I would appreciate if someone could test this or shed some light on why this is happening. |

How can I run a command _before_ a file is modified? [closed] Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:16 AM PST I am trying to find out what process is modifying a file. How can I run a command right before the write operation is performed? In the Linux world, I could use LD_PRELOAD and intercept the syscalls. Wondering if a program or a similar method exists in the macOS world. |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:39 AM PST I'm trying out Raycast app without any prior experience of its kind such as Alfred. To my astonishment, it has a built-in Switch Windows functionality which I can assign a hotkey. I am trying to replace the hotkey for Mac OS' App Switcher with that of Raycast's Window Switcher(CMD+Tab). However, it seems (CMD+Tab) is a not overridable shortcut. I seriously hate how app switcher works and would love to adopt a more reasonable window switcher without additional applications. Any help will be greatly appreciated. |
No bootable device - High Sierra [duplicate] Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:13 AM PST My mac just started displaying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". Previously it was in sleep mode. I can't boot into macOS now: using reFInd shows a legacy OS that will only get as far as the "No bootable device" screen. I can still boot into the windows partition that was setup by bootcamp several years ago - I'm posting this question from bootcamp. No recent changes have been made to the partitioning or boot options. I've tried holding alt to select a boot volume but macOS isn't available as a slection. In recovery mode the partition that was previously used for macOS is displayed as disk0s2, partition type is all "F"s Disk repair showed no errors for the whole disk showed no errors, and repair was unavailable for the partition that held macOS. Is there any way to repair the partition? macOS 10.13.6 macbook pro 11,3 [1 |

App opened beneath the main app what I'm looking on it Posted: 29 Nov 2021 09:23 AM PST I have a problem with opening apps. Not a huge one but it's really a hassle. When I try to open an app it's going to be opened always under what I'm looking on it. As a picture, if I open the "Kasa" app it will be opened underneath Safari. Actually, it happened after hiding the dock automatically, but I want to keep this function. Is there a solution? ] |
File Renaming - Currently Using Bridge Regex // String Substitution // Automator [closed] Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:00 AM PST I have been trying to solve this issue for awhile now - and I am able to get it down to two steps but wondering if it can be done in one step via automator / applescript or javascript / python? Thanks in advance. Examples attached; screenshots at the bottom for reference. Filename examples; files always follow this format but the digital counter is always random. -- 1234567890123_000 ExampleNameRandom1.jpg 1234567890123_000 ExampleNameRandom2.jpg 1234567890123_000 ExampleNameRandom3.jpg -- 1234567890125_002 ExampleNameRandom4.jpg 1234567890125_002 ExampleNameRandom5.jpg 1234567890125_002 ExampleNameRandom6.jpg -- 1234567890135_005 ExampleNameRandom7.jpg 1234567890135_005 ExampleNameRandom8.jpg 1234567890135_005 ExampleNameRandom9.jpg 1234567890135_005 ExampleNameRandom10.jpg Output; desired output to be in this sequence - not a + b + c + d + e instead b + d + e...etc 1234567890123_000_b.jpg 1234567890123_000_d.jpg 1234567890123_000_e.jpg -- 1234567890125_002_b.jpg 1234567890125_002_d.jpg 1234567890125_002_e.jpg -- 1234567890135_005_b.jpg 1234567890135_005_d.jpg 1234567890135_005_e.jpg 1234567890135_005_f.jpg -- I have been doing this using Bridge and using a Regex to extract the first 17 digits (1234567890123_000) - after I do this the files get the multiple file tags of (1) (2) (3) so I use an automator name replace to replace those with b d e f, etc in the folder they go to. Is there any way to do what I am doing now but consolidating it to a applescript/javascript I can run on bridge or an automator that I can run on finder or set as a folder action? Not sure if its relevant but basically these are batches of images and they get renamed as b for captureone metadata - rating 1 star, d for rating 2 star, e for rating 3 star, etc. that's how I determine how to name them before I run the batch rename on bride, I just filter by rating so this bit is manual which I don't mind. I mean if there is a way to include that as well would be grand. |
Connect macbook air 2015 to M1 Macbook air Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:25 AM PST I want to transfer files from my early 2015 MacBook air to 2020 M1 MacBook air. Connected with the USB-A to USB-C cord. How do I abort "add a call" on iOS 13? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:04 AM PST The scenario is I'm in the middle of a phone call, apparently my face brushed the button for "add a call". I'm still in my call, looking at that "Add a call / Contacts" menu. I need to get back to the menus that let me switch between keypad and speakerphone controls. There is no exit/X/back out button on this screen. The only screen features are "Groups" and "+" (to add a contact) then it's a list of my contacts. Dragging down from the top does nothing. Going home and selecting phone app again simply brings me back here. If I navigate the buttons on the bottom, I can get to a "Keypad", but this keypad does not have the button to let me switch to the menu with "speakerphone on/off". Further, typing in this keypad Does NOT generate DTMF touch-tones to the recipient, and so it cannot control navigational menus. How do I abort an "Add a call"? |
Is it possible to Map Function keys to something else on macOS? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:51 AM PST I'm on Apple Silicon MacBook Pro. The Touch Bar is broken. MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) thermal issues Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:54 AM PST A few months ago I got a 16-inch MacBook Pro (A2141) with 32GB ram and Core i9 (I9-9980HK) 2.4 GHz processor. My problem is that that it overheats very quickly and drop the performance of the CPU to the ground. I installed Intel Power Gadget for investigating and turns out, just after a few minutes of heavier workload (clean install a bit larger maven project) get so hot the system limits the maximum core clock speed to 1GHz. When this happens the mac feels very slow and janky and even the most basic things can take uncomfortably long. I heard that this series of MacBook Pros with Core i9 has thermal issues but this seems ridiculous. I already bought a Cooler Master A200 laptop cooler and it's helped a bit, but it still doesn't feel right. Does this MacBooks has THAT bad thermal problem, or should I take mine for a cleaning? I also read that a repaste would help a lot. Do Apple authorized services allowed to perform repaste and cleaning? I could not figure it out from official websites. Does the repaste/cleaning at a non-Apple authorized service spoil the warranty? |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:03 AM PST I want to update from macOS Catalina to macOS Big Sur on a supported MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014). Yet The App Store says macOS Big Sur "Works on this MacBook Pro". When I click the "GET" button, I found here a similar question regarding updating to a prior version of macOS but could not apply any of the answers successfully. What can I do to update to macOS Big Sur? UPDATE: macOS 11.1 was just released, and now I am offered to update! |
How to get calendar invites to come in as iCal when i use a gmail address as my appleID? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:07 AM PST I use myname@gmail.com for my appleid username. If i wish to send an invite to my icloud calendar, how can i do so? I have myname@icloud.com and myname@me.com email addresses that are associated with my appleID (contactable at). I have tried sending the invite to these addresses but nothing has been received. Any ideas how i can send an invite to my icloud calendar? Note this is a different question to "How to get calendar invites to come in as iCal and not as Google Calendar invites?" That asks how to get invites sent to a gmail address show up in ical without adding a gmail calendar. I am happy to send the invite to a non-gmail address. |

Disk full; Terminal in Recovery mode won’t delete files; boot kernel panics Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:25 AM PST I'm in a pickle here. macOS Mojave, just updated the other day. I managed to fill my disk up while creating a .dmg, and the system froze. I rebooted. Kernel panic. Boot to Recovery mode. Mount the disk. Open Terminal.
Essentially the same issue as this Unix thread from '08! https://www.unix.com/linux/69889-unable-remove-file-using-rm-disk-space-full.html I've tried It's borked. Does anyone have any suggestions that aren't "wipe the drive and restore from your backup"? |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:45 AM PST I have a question about using iSCSI mounts in macOS (High Sierra). What is the preferred way to mount iSCSI targets in macOS? Also, is it possible to do so from Recovery Mode? Any advice would be appreciated. |
How can I download an older version of OS X/macOS? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:38 AM PST Sometimes it's hard to search for older versions of macOS & OS X on the App Store. This is an attempt to provide the canonical QA for this issue, as per the Meta QA - How can I get any older version of a Mac OS to be able to run as a VM, or to reinstall on my Mac? |
OS volume shows as type 'FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF' Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:43 AM PST Yesterday, I have tried to delete an Ubuntu partition. Since, my Mac (13", MBPro mid-2014) doesn't boot. Now, I boot on Mac OS copy with an USB. i follow different subject of this forum (like this : Partition type suddenly FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF, drive unmountable), and my volume partition change from FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF to 48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC. How can I download the installer for macOS Sierra 10.12? [duplicate] Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:35 AM PST I have a MacBook Pro running El Capitan that I need to upgrade to Sierra 10.12 (not High Sierra) for development reasons. I have previously upgraded my personal computer as follows: El Capitan -> Sierra -> High Sierra. Knowing that, I should be able to see the previous version in the App Store as outlined in this answer. However, I don't see Sierra in my Purchased tab in the App Store: Was Sierra 10.12 completely removed from the store (including previous purchases)? |
How to enable the sidebar in finder? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:04 AM PST All out of a sudden, the sidebar in "Finder" is gone. The weird thing is that the "Show Sidebar" entry of the View menu is disabled/grayed out, so the sidebar can't be enabled again. Do you have any ideas how to fix this issue? Btw, restarting did not change anything. Edit: Happens on OSX Yosemite/10.10.3 |
What's the difference between Final Cut Pro X and Final Cut Studio? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:41 AM PST I visited the Wikipedia page about Final Cut Studio, which is apparently aimed at professional movie studios. The page says that it's now only available via a 1-800 number, but the link to the official page for Studio at Apple now points at Final Cut Pro X. Also, the prices are wildly different. $299 for Pro X. Around $800 for Studio according to some results on Google. Is Studio an old, retired product and the high end editor suite is now Pro X (with an apparent huge slash in price), or am I missing something? |
