How can I turn off the "Numbers" application?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 01:43 PM PST

"Numbers" is the Mac OS conterpart to Excel. When you extract data from the Web, you can often export it into a .cvs format, which is just a primitive version of Excel limited to a single worksheet. It is very easy to "save as" a cvs file into an .xls file.

But, with Mac OS when you export data into a .cvs file, it actually exports it to Numbers. The interface is quite different. Is there a way to turn off Numbers so it does not automatically capture .csv data exports?

Debloat Monterey [duplicate]

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 02:23 PM PST

I would like to know how to de-bloat Monterey (apps+services), I couldn't find a way. I've tried to look into the installer but I can't see a way to create a custom installer that will not include all those ressource eating features.

Like most, I just want to be able to make my own computer as clean as possible and very much regret the fact I can't delete the bloatware and customize my mac's icons much anymore, and am not good enough to be able to get rid of the services I don't use or to find it by myself.

I plan to delete most apps, leaving only mail.app and safari as it's needed for some security checks, and the utilities. By bloatware I mean apps like music, quicktime, photos, messages, chess, agenda, time machine, siri, and their associated files and/or services.

The installer doesn't show any of these apps, and the read-only partition of Mac Os doesn't show them either.

I've also tried to disable the universalaccess service as I noticed it eats Ram for nothing in my case.

Thank you in advance.

What is eating up space inside Final Cut X bundles?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:51 AM PST

So here is the deal: I am backing up my HD, deleting all the media and keeping just the bundles. Usually it takes no more than 2MB, maybe 5MB. However some bundles are getting 10x more space. Like this one:

enter image description here

Often it is just about embedded render files (and then it can take several GB). No problem, I just get inside the package and delete the Render folder.

enter image description here

Now what is really odd, is that inside some packages, there is nothing using that space.

As you can see, I have already enabled hidden files to display. Could it be some sort of Finder refreshing issue?

This is my system: enter image description here

Shared Mac not showing in Another Mac Sidebar Locations

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:47 AM PST

I am using iMac running macOS Big Sur and MacBook Air running Mojave.

Both of them have File sharing and screen sharing on.

While my iMac shows the MacBook Air automatically in sidebar under locations when they are on the same network but my MacBook Air doesn't show the iMac under the locations Sidebar.

If I go to network it shows the iMac and I can connect but I want it to automatically show up in the sidebar locations.

P.S. Finder preferences on both systems have the connected servers, bonjour etc. checked.

How can I see which files Icloud drive are currently moving to dropbox

Used Automator to automatically insert file path; now "~a" is substituted with "ã"

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 01:24 PM PST

I used Automator to automatically insert a certain file path to my terminal whenever I press a certain shortcut. My AppleScript looks like this:

on run {input, parameters} tell application "System Events" to keystroke "/Users/johnappleseed/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/University" return input end run

The problem is: Whenever I press the shortcut assigned to this Automation in my Terminal, the "com~apple" in the inserted text is replaced with "comãpple". Therefore, I get an error message because that file path does not exist.

Do you have any idea how I can get around this "~"-replacement?

Open or activate an application in specific shortcut [duplicate]

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 09:23 AM PST

I'd like to bind certain keyboard shortcuts to certain applications, and have it open and be visible when it is pressed.

For example, I want to have the Things app open (if not already open) and be focused to front, when pressing Cmd+Ctrl+H.

Can I do this natively on macOS? Or does it require a special application?

At the moment, I press Cmd+Tab repeatedly but this is not idea, as I'd like to bind shortcuts for a bunch of frequently-accessed apps.

TextEdit freezes on opening files via "open" menu (Monterey on MBP 16" 2019)

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 04:34 AM PST

TextEdit freezes every time while trying to open a file from the menu File->Open (or CMD + O) or via menu File->Recent files. But if I open a file from the Finder (by simply clicking on it) TextEdit opens it correctly without any fail.

I am having this problem on MBP 2019 driven by Monterey Mac OS.

Here is a few crash reports (due to their length do not fit 30k symbols they are on external links):

Is it possible to create a link/URL to a particular mailbox folder in Mail?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:37 AM PST

I would like to link to a particular email folder so that when I click a URL file in Finder or URL link in another application (such as Notes), it opens the email folder in Mail for me.

Is this possible?

Three different questions already discuss creating a link/URL to a particular email message in Mail, but I want to link to the folder instead:

How can I delete the files in /System/Volumes/VM?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:13 AM PST

Just as an experiment/exercise, I tried deleting the swap files in /System/Volumes/VM but no matter what I did, it was prevented.

  • sudo rm - operation not permitted
  • sudo xattr - didn't return anything
  • launching Finder as root - some error message

I probably tried a couple of other things too, to no avail.

I don't care if this causes the computer to crash, I am doing it because I curios - so what does it take to delete the swapfiles (besides, they probably won't disappear anyway because they are still kept open by the system and won't go away until that filehandle is released)?

How much memory/cpu is mds_stores consuming for you?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 01:07 PM PST

I'm trying to figure out if the spotlight process "mds_stores" is consuming more resources than it should be. I've turned spotlight on and off and reindexed everything but it's still regularly using between 40 and 80% of the CPU on my lightly loaded system and chewing through insane amounts of memory even after a reboot. Right now, the real memory and private memory it's consuming is over 32 GB on a 64 GB machine. This doesn't seem normal to me.

As far as I can tell, Spotlight finished indexing my drive over a day ago yet mds_stores is still consuming a bunch of resources.

I've told Spotlight to ignore my external drive and the caches. Is there anything else I can do?

Hard drive full no matter what I try

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 12:00 PM PST

I have run into the issue where no matter what files/applications I delete I cannot actually free up any disk space on my Early 2014 Macbook Air with 128GB of SSD storage. The most recent exercise was to delete Xcode ~10GB. Before the delete, the storage summary showed 3.6GB of free space. After the delete, the storage summary showed ~4.8GB of free space. What did change was the allocation between "Applications" and "System". Before the delete, System was 82GB, and Applications was 20GB, afterwards, Applications went down to 11GB, and System went up to 92GB.

Here are the items I have tried / won't consider trying:

  1. Yes, I have emptied the trash multiple times
  2. Yes, I have booted into safe mode and then back into normal
  3. No, I won't install a third-party piece of software to delete screensavers/applications backgrounds, logs. When interrogating Library and System folders those folders do not show 90GBs of usage they show something like ~10GB
  4. Yes, I have tried finding the listing of Time Machine backups and deleting them (there are none listed)

So hopefully someone has encountered this issue and found a substantive solution. I am personally wondering if the "cloud" drives I have installed are just consuming all of the free space (I have two providers).

For reference, I am running macOS 10.14 (Mojave)and I am unable to install the latest update because I cannot free up enough space on the system to do so!

How to do "unified docking": One device to Charge and connect USB to iPad Pro (USB-C) and iPhone (Lightning)

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 03:00 PM PST

My goal is to build a station for my local dancing school with an audio interface for old iPads, iPhones and USB-C devices (Such as the iPad Pro, Android Tablets and Phones and hopefully the next iPhone)

The "station" needs to charge the mobile device and pass through USB-Data. At the moment, it is solved with the Camera Connection Kit (Charging+USB-Port to Lightning), which is plugged into a Power adapter and to the USB-Audio-Interface. However, this solution obviously only works for the old ipads and iPhones, but when a dance instructor comes and wants to connect an iPad pro or - god beware - an android device with USB-C, they completely mess up the system because they unplug all cables and then don't know how to replug them.

The question is: is there a way to have a single cable, preferably USB-C that charges and carries data and then a simple adapter or adapter cable to lighting? Are there any USB-C Docks that would work when adapted to lightning or do we need active components when adapting from lightning to usb c?

When using a dummy VGA projector, some of the software does not appear on my built-in retina screen

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 08:03 AM PST

enter image description hereSo the reason I attached a VGA dummy to my mid-2014 retina Macbook is to solve this problem which it did. But now I have a new problem. From time to time, if I try to open a software, it won't appear on my retina screen. It reappears if I unplug the VGA Dummy. However, the problem does not appear consistently. Sometimes if I restart my Mac it disappears, at least for a while. And I am not a hundred percent sure, but it never happens with Chrome, only calendar, texshop or office softwares.

Please help me because this is seriously hampering my ability to work

Touch ID Canceled by another authentication

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 09:01 AM PST

I've had this issue over multiple iterations of OS. This began for me in High Sierra, followed into Mojave, and now into Catalina. I finally figured I'd deal with it. I've tried everything I've found currently, and nothing works.

I've done the following.

  1. Deleted everything in my Keychain folder and rebooted.

  2. Deleted the entire /Library/Keychain folder itself, and rebooted.

  3. Tested another profile, which did work, however it doesn't help me aside from knowing something's messed up with my profile.

Any other ideas before I blow this profile away? This is a work laptop so it'll be a pain to get this back to normal working order.

< and ^ keys are swapped

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 04:52 AM PST

I'm using a German Keyboard (Lioncast LK20) with OS X 10.11.5. I set the keymap to German and it is displayed correctly in the settings screen. Unfortunately the following two keys are swapped when I type on the keyboard:

< Key (right of SHIFT)
^ Key (left of 1)

Are there any advanced settings to fix this issue?

How to auto-accept cookies notifications as mandated by EU law?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 11:29 AM PST

EU law forces websites to notify visitors about the use of cookies. Clicking on these messages is quite a nuisance. I've found a plugin on https://cookiesok.com but this is only available for Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

Does anybody know of something similar for Safari? Or other means to accomplish the same?

Uninstall all programs installed by Homebrew

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 10:36 AM PST

I am wondering if there is a way to uninstall all "programs" installed by Homebrew? I was using it and installed programs that corresponded to programming or using C/C++ and used the terminal to compile it but will not be using it in a few months.

Will installation of macports automatically install or update OpenSSL?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 09:41 AM PST

I am a mac user and want to stay with the system-provided version of OpenSSL, which is OpenSSL 0.9.8y. I am wondering if installation of macports will automatically update my OpenSSL or install another version?

Also, how can I check the version of the OpenSSL library on my mac instead of the version of the OpenSSL command? Do they always have the same version? Thanks!

Why does iOS insist on using my Facebook email address?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 06:53 AM PST

I fill out webforms on my iphone fairly often. I use autocomplete to speed this process along, and it works pretty well for the most part. However, for some reason, it always insists on using an @facebook.com email address in the email field.

I do not use Facebook for email. I never have, never will, and never want to. I do use Facebook for lots of other things, and thus, would prefer not to turn off iOS's Facebook integration, which seems to be the only workaround that googling has offered me.

How can I force auto-complete to use my preferred email address, rather than the one associated with my Facebook account?

Can I hide the toolbar in Safari while in Full Screen mode?

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 11:45 AM PST

When in non-full-screen mode, Safari lets me use the +| shortcut or View > Hide Toolbar to hide the URL and search bar, etc. However, when I'm in Full Screen mode, this option is greyed out. Is there any way I can hide it without exiting Full Screen?
