Blocking websites on hosts file Posted: 15 Nov 2021 01:57 AM PST I'm trying to block distracting websites on my hosts file like so: Alas, I can't get it to work. Twitter is still viewable. I've also been sure to flush my cache but that's not helped. Could it be due to the fact I'm also using OpenDNS on my router?
How can I plug my MacBook Pro 2019 to my monitor and get 144hz safely Posted: 15 Nov 2021 02:00 AM PST I own a late 2019 16 inch Macbook Pro. For medical reasons I need to plug a monitor to it so I stop looking down all the time. I own an old BenQ monitor, but has Hdmi, capped to 60hz, DVI that goes up to 144hz and and a VGA port (Model is XL2411). I have no idea how to plug it to my macbook so that I can have up to 144hz. I also heard that some cables can cause your Macbook pro to die, so I'm kinda scared and would appreciate any help !
After running 355 phpunit tests, the following takes a very long time Posted: 15 Nov 2021 01:44 AM PST I switched to mac m1 and after migrating the project unit tests take a very long time. The funny thing is that the first 355 tests pass quickly, while the rest take a very long time (10 minutes each). It used to work fast on ubuntu. What could it be because of? Maybe some kind of cache is being clogged? mac air
How to change fn + backspace into different keyboard shortcut? [closed] Posted: 14 Nov 2021 11:49 PM PST I started learning Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop a few days ago and I found out using fn + backspace with those apps is quite troublesome. I'm trying to use Karabiner because I've set as disabling BTT while using Illustrator and Photoshop. Is there any way to change fn+backspace into different keyboard shortcut?
Command line 'open' for app not installed from App Store Posted: 14 Nov 2021 11:18 PM PST So on MacOS, we can use the command line However, when the application has just been downloaded from somewhere, then this gives the alert/popup that the app "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified". I know that I can use the Mac GUI and right-click ctrl-"open" to give me option to open it anyway. However, Is it possible to do this from the command line?
Create schedule for iOS grayscale display Posted: 14 Nov 2021 09:12 PM PST I wish to make my iPhone's screen grayscale following a schedule. I am able to turn on grayscale mode manually, and I am able to schedule "Night Shift", which changes the color profile of the screen, but I am unable to schedule a color profile shift entirely to grayscale.
How to utterly disable every and all zoom gestures on macOS Big Sur? Posted: 14 Nov 2021 08:09 PM PST I have all Scroll & Zoom options unchecked in the Trackpad preference pane of my Macbook Pro running macOS Big Sur 11.6. Nonetheless, every now and then as I am using a word processor, or spreadsheet, etc. I will fat-finger some combination of keys and Trackpad and the screen will freak out with zooming way in or out. I am done with this. How can I utterly disable any and all zoom gestures on my system? I am quite happy to get down on the command line.
How to get 4K resolution on desktop wallpaper and desktop icons by default with external monitor? Posted: 14 Nov 2021 06:05 PM PST I have a 2020 MacBook Air with the following specs: Processor: 1.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 Memory: 16 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4X Storage: 1 TB SSD Operating System: macOS Monterey version 12.0.1 I have connected the USB-C port on the MacBook Air closest to its rear to a Razer Core X eGPU enclosure sporting a Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 GPU with a short Thunderbolt 3 cable. The eGPU is then connected to a 27-inch 4K Dell U2720Q Display via a DisplayPort 1.4 cable. In System Preferences inside the "Displays" section I have the following options enabled: Resolution: Default for Display Color Profile: Display P3 Refresh Rate: 60 Hertz Rotation: Standard I turn on my MacBook Air in the following manner: I open the lid, wait for the password prompt, type in the password once the prompt appears, wait for the computer to fully boot up, and finally I close the lid. At this point the resolution of the dock, menu bar, and of every application on the computer is 4K. However, the resolution of the desktop wallpaper and of the desktop icons is not 4K! To remedy this situation I have to manually reset the desktop wallpaper and the size of the icons which makes them both snap into 4K resolution. Is there a way to make this the default behavior without me having to go through this tedious routine every time I turn on my computer?
Cannot restore from backup due to not enough free space, yet there is plenty of space Posted: 14 Nov 2021 06:46 PM PST My general > settings > iPhone storage shows I am using 16gb of 64gb... yet when I try to do a restore it tells me that the backup can't be done because there is not enough space... ?!?!! This backup is from the same phone, so how can it not have enough space? How am I supposed to free up enough space to complete a restore?! I am so confused.

How to add word to iOS text correction dictionary? Learn Spelling / Hide Red Squiggly Line Posted: 14 Nov 2021 04:03 PM PST I will often type a brand name or other word that the iOS text correction dictionary thinks is a typo or misspelled. This adds a red squiggly line under the offending word. Screenshot from Apple iOS Notes app: Tapping on the red word may suggest an auto-correction: Or if there are no suggestions, it says "No Replacements Found" However there does not appear to be an option to remember this spelling for future uses. In Microsoft Word this was traditionally the "Add to Dictionary" menu item action. In Apple's Pages app for macOS, this feature is called "Learn Spelling" and/or "Ignore Spelling": How can I add a word to the iOS dictionary, or otherwise hide the red squiggly line under "misspelled" words that I want to use in the future?

The xterm launches OK on freshly rebooted machine only [duplicate] Posted: 15 Nov 2021 01:11 AM PST The xterm launches OK on freshly rebooted machine only. After awhile, it won't launch any more. The behaviour is the same if I try to launch it from a terminal window or from the XQuartz Application menu. The other X pgms work OK, like xman, xeyes, etc. If I start the xterm from command line the 'ps' shows that there are two xterm instances and if I kill either, they both disappear. If I start xterm from the XQuartz Application menu nothing happens, but 'ps' shows that there is one xterm instance. If I kill the xterm instance I get blank xterm window which does not respond to anything and 'ps' does not show any xterms any more. I'm running macOS 12.0.1 iMac Pro and XQuartz 2.8.1 However, on my MacBook running 11.6.1 and XQuartz 2.8.1 I haven't seen this problem. It seems that the problem is triggered at least after starting Android Studio. (Actually, the problem is triggered by some internal process as xterm won't launch after awhile even if there were no user activity.) The only way to make the problem go away (temporarily) is to reboot the machine. Output if XQuartz started from command line: Defaults: Pkg info: Display environment variable: Process list:

How to know when battery is "failing" according to Apple? Posted: 15 Nov 2021 01:00 AM PST I have a 2017 MacBook Pro without Touch Bar with 1090 battery cycles, 70% battery capacity and as condition it says "Replace Soon". I bought the computer 2 and a half years ago so my warranty is no longer valid. I contacted the only two apple service repair shops near me and if the battery is faulty they will charge me the equivalent of 250USD, but if they find no fault they will charge me 450USD. That's outrageous, it's almost twice the price if they find no fault in the battery because they will also charge me for the keyboard (they said the keyboard is on Apple if the battery is found to be faulty). I can bring it in for a diagnostic for 40 bucks (that go towards the replacement if I go for it) but I can't afford keyboard+battery, I can only afford to be charged for the battery (250 USD). I asked what is the test they do to know if the battery is failing, if it's the condition in the system report or if its something else. They told me it's something that can only be done at an Apples Diagnostic center. If I take my computer they will have it for 2-5 business days and I can't spare that time if the battery won't be replaced. My computer is my work and I can only afford to be away from it to replace the battery for the 250USD. So, before I take it to be repaired, I need to know 100% that when they test it they will "find a fault with the battery". So, what do they do to test that? It's obvious the store is not gonna tell me, but maybe I can find the info online. Would it be bad for my computer if I wait for the condition in the battery to be "Service Battery"? I am assuming if that message pops up is because it is for sure failing so if I can't find a way to test the battery I might as well wait for that message if it warrantees that they will find a fault. My computer shuts down randomly, it happened more often about a month ago. Sometimes the battery switches from 34% to 4% and then back to 34% once plugged into the wall. It doesn't last more than 2-3 hours when it's on battery. Edit: I am on macOS Mojave
'stuff' subcommand not effective in 'screen' session until it has been attached Posted: 14 Nov 2021 06:04 PM PST In macOS Catalina 10.15.7, screen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06: I'm attempting to use the 'screen' command (/usr/bin/screen) to run a program in the background. I create a detached screen session to run my program, then I use screen's 'stuff' subcommand to send the program a command. But the program never sees that command. If I attach to the session and then detach, 'stuff' works as I expect. How can I make 'screen' forward the command to the program without attaching first? This is used to spin up a number of processes without user intervention, so attaching and stealing the terminal focus is not an option. Here's a minimal example: (Note: I sent this to Ask Different because Apple uses a very old version of 'screen' which AFAIK is not used on any other platform.)
Microsoft Office on Mac Book Air Posted: 14 Nov 2021 11:08 PM PST I used to have Microsoft Office on MacBook Pro. Now I bought MacBook Air. what do you suggest to download and where from? I need to open my files that I created in my previous Mac and of course the Office that works offline
Posted: 14 Nov 2021 09:01 PM PST Whenever I try to proceed with the bootcamp installation or click the download windows support software option from the action menu, it throws me that error. I've googled this problem and made sure I have a strong wifi connection, plugged in my Macbook while doing this, am running the latest Catalina version and apart from the current windows 10 iso on the microsoft website, tried using older versions of windows 10. Nothing helped.

How do I drag a text box in Preview? Posted: 14 Nov 2021 08:07 PM PST When using Preview, I can create a text box to add text on top of a PDF. However, the text box is not always created in the correct area. I find that I can use the Arrow Keys to move the text box. Or, I can stretch the text box with my mouse and pointer. However, I cannot move the text box using my mouse. What am I missing? How do I do that? Apple's reference says, "To move the text box, just drag it." But, I haven't figured out how to do that.
Thunderbolt cable that only works as USB 3.1 Posted: 14 Nov 2021 10:06 PM PST I have an LG 5k Ultrafine screen which does not work when connected to my Macbook Pro 2018. Before thinking that the screen may not be working, it could be that the cable which isn't working. In order for it to work, it must be a Thunderbolt 3 cable, which I know it is (I bought it and it used to work with the screen). I plugged the cable Macbook <> Different USB-C device and it did work, however it Apple -> About this Mac -> System Report, the device only gets shown in the USB 3.1 bus instead of the Thunderbolt section. Are there ways to test if the cable that I have is a working Thunderbolt 3 cable?
How to see count of unread emails from the Mail app in the Mac OS menu bar? Posted: 14 Nov 2021 07:02 PM PST What's the best way to see the count of unread emails from the Mail app in the Mac OS menu bar? (Bonus points if I can use it to open the Mail app as well.) I don't really use the Dock, and I've gotten used to apps like Airmail and Fantastical that use the Mac OS menu bar to show information, like e.g. the count of unread emails. The best I could find after a quick search was https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22042/mail-unread-menu (from this thread), which looks like it hasn't been updated in ~6 years and might not work without also installing the MailPluginFix plugin. Is that really the best way to do this? I'm using Mojave.
How to track screentime of Java apps with Catalina Posted: 14 Nov 2021 03:11 PM PST I am using macOS screen time as a mechanism for parental controls. Before updating to Catalina, the screen time tracked the total time a user was logged in with his/her credentials, regardless of what apps they used or games were played. After the update, it tracks some individual apps. The problem is that screen time is not tracking for example the time used for java apps. E.g with Minecraft, only the Minecraft launcher is tracked but not the game itself which runs java. Is there any way to enable the screen time to track the usage of the java apps and/or total login time? Total logged-in time matches with Finder usage time, but open can not add Finder to the list of tracked apps. The question is, is it possible to add java or Finder to the list of the apps tracked by screen time? An alternative solution may be third-party software, but those I haven't yet looked for.
Migrated VPN server broken with macOS Catalina Posted: 14 Nov 2021 03:16 PM PST My Mac mini has been working just fine with macOS Mojave as a VPN server following the migration method described in the macOS Server Service Migration Guide, but after upgrading to macOS Catalina there is trouble. The VPN clients connect just fine on the internal network, but not on an external network; which makes the VPN server a bit pointless! I can confirm that all was working well with the server running macOS Mojave, and my iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 clients have been connecting just fine; it is the upgrade to macOS Catalina on the server that has caused this problem. Here are the log entries for a failed connection: I'm currently using the built-in VPN on macOS Catalina 10.15.1
Posted: 14 Nov 2021 11:25 PM PST Apple shipped the original MacBook Pro Retina 13" with a default resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels (retina). Why has Apple changed the default resolution to appear like 1440 × 900?

How to hide Gmail labels in Apple Mail? Posted: 14 Nov 2021 04:02 PM PST When searching for mail in Mail.app with a Gmail account, every instance of the mail shows up with every Gmail label, especially in the Bin label, since Apple mail autosaves drafts as you go along, there can be 50 instances of a single mail just in the Bin folder. This makes searching impossible. So I'm trying to turn off those labels in Gmail but no success so far. I have disabled "Show in IMAP" option in the Gmail label settings for all those labels then deleted all the cached items in ~/Library/Mail/V2 and restarted Mail.app but that didn't do the trick.
How do I negotiate dialogue boxes using the keyboard only? Posted: 15 Nov 2021 01:39 AM PST On Windows based machines, whenever a dialogue box pops up with multiple choice options (ie 'Abort', 'Continue', 'Retry'), you can use the 'Tab' key to cycle through those options without using the mouse. On OSX, there doesn't appear to be an option to cycle through dialogue boxes using a key rather than the Trackpad. Is there any keyboard shortcut to do this?
