What kind of server can we connect from iPhone Files app? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 05:28 PM PDT If I remember it correctly, in the past I was able to connect to smb and/or webdav servers from iPhone Files app. But I tried to connect to my webdav server today and it doesn't work. Actually it can create the connection, but not navigate and show the files. What kind of server can we connect from iPhone Files app? |
My hello-world.cpp build in Xcode is too big (65 kB) [migrated] Posted: 08 Jun 2022 03:51 PM PDT On Linux, for this type of code: the final build binary was around 15 kB or something. In Xcode on my Macbook Air M1 it is 65 kB! What am I doing wrong? |
Merge Unallocated Space with a macOS Extended (Journaled) Partition via Terminal Posted: 08 Jun 2022 01:50 PM PDT I have a 2 TB external hard drive and it contains an exFAT partition named "2 TB HDD" of 1.5 TB and a macOS Extended (Journaled) partition named "Time Machine" of 500 GB. I noticed that the Partition button in Disk Utility was greyed out when I selected the Partition Map itself, or either of the two partitions. I decided to use a Windows machine with DiskGenius to knock the 1.5 TB partition down to 1.3 TB so I could allocate an extra 200 to the 500 GB macOS Extended (Journaled) partition, making it 700 GB. Now I have 1.3 TB of exFAT, 200 GB of unallocated space, and 500 GB of macOS Extended (Journaled). My question is: How can I merge the 200 GB unallocated space with the 500 GB macOS Extended (Journaled) partition using Terminal? I am aware that if I run the wrong command I could lose all of my data. This is why I am asking here — to figure out the command. Note: DiskGenius is unable to merge these 2 together. |

allow setugid with sandbox-exec Posted: 08 Jun 2022 01:25 PM PDT I have an executable (Google Chrome) that apparently "is running setugid()". I cannot find a way to make it work when called from within a I'm trying to run a nodejs process in a sandbox so that it doesn't have access to the filesystem outside of its directory. The node process needs to spawn Chrome however, which I'm trying to run without the sandbox. Given the following sandbox profile: The following two commands work:
(although the second one is really not smart) but this does not work: Note that I am not trying to run Chrome with I'm not sure what's preventing chrome from "running setugid()". I've read somewhere that it's something called "AppKit", but I'm not sure how it gets involved here. Is there a way to have sandbox-exec allow the chrome process to do what it needs, without sudo? Any help is appreciated, be it some solution or more info about this |

Method to circumvent macOS Facetime sandboxing Posted: 08 Jun 2022 11:51 AM PDT I would like to use another software camera that modifies my screen to be able to include non-traditional resources in my video stream during calls. One example may be using ManyCam to route various sources into the call as well as change sources during presentation, etc. Is there a physical USB webcam emulation device with both input and output that will accept video input from a source (such as stated) and then route this video back into a Mac as a valid webcam sources such that Facetime can recognize and use it as a webcam? |

How to fix blurry fonts on external monitor (M1 Mac Mini)? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 10:14 AM PDT I previously had a HP U28 28" 4k monitor hooked up to it which worked fine. Now I've changed to a LG 32GN600-B 31.5" 2k 165Hz screen due to me also gaming on it with my Windows machine and when running 2k the fonts look so atrociously blurry that it gives me a headache within minutes. What can I do about it? Would this be the recommended solution as of June 2022? |
MacBook charging only with 5W instead of 80W Posted: 08 Jun 2022 01:18 PM PDT So I have a pretty strange problem I don't really understand. I always charge my MacBook Air 2020 (M1) with my phone's Supercharger. First, I had the OnePlus 9 Pro with a 65 Watt charger and my MacBook always took like 40 - 60 Watts from it, depending on the usage. Lately, I upgraded to the OnePlus 10 Pro which comes with an 80 Watt charger and now my MacBook constantly only takes 5 Watt from it to charge and I don't really get it. I know that it has to work and I know that it actually should too but I don't know the real problem here. |
Why does "iPhone Findable After Power Off" not work from iCloud website? [closed] Posted: 08 Jun 2022 12:32 PM PDT I have an iPhone 11 running iOS 15.5. I was trying to test the "iPhone Findable After Power Off" function by powering down the phone and then trying to find it by logging in with my AppleID at https://www.icloud.com/find but I couldn't get it to work. I tried fiddling with all the settings on my iPhone that I thought could possibly be relevant. Finally, I found the solution: this function does not work when accessing icloud.com through a web browser, but only through a "Find My" app on an Apple product. The page listing features of iOS 15 says this: "Locate your devices using the Find My network if they've been erased, or for up to 24 hours even after they've been turned off." Apple's support page for "Add your iPhone to Find My" says this: "On a supported iPhone with iOS 15 or later, turning on the Find My network allows you to locate your iPhone for up to 24 hours after it's turned off, or up to 5 hours when it's in power reserve mode (iOS 15.2 or later)." It is only at a different support page that I found this: "If you're using iCloud.com/find, you can't see your device's location if it's powered off, the battery has run out, or more than 24 hours has passed since its last location was sent to Apple." My question is why. My understanding is that the U1 chip in my iPhone stays on even when the device has been powered down, and the U1 chip will be tracked by Apple when other people's iOS devices having U1 chips get within range of my turned-off iPhone. Is there any technical reason why that information (the location of my turned-off iPhone) cannot be provided through the iCloud website, but only through the Find My app? Or is there a policy reason for this? I do not own any other Apple product aside from my iPhone. I like the fact that if I misplace my phone, but it's still online, I can log in to the iCloud website and get the location of the phone. But if the phone is not online, why can I not still use my laptop running Windows, or my Android tablet, to track it? |
how can I copy paths in the $PATH environment from bash to zsh? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 04:39 PM PDT How can I copy all the the command paths from the bash environment $PATH variable to the zsh environment? I'm on macOS 11.6.1 (and about to install 11.6.6). Posted: 08 Jun 2022 02:19 PM PDT MacOS Monterey includes "Live Text", which is OCR to use when viewing your photos, including handwriting recognition. But I have thousands of photos, many of which are photos of presentations, pictures of Powerpoint slides taken from my seat in the audience, etc. I also have hundreds of screenshots with text from YouTube. I'd like the Mac to slowly work its way through ALL of my photos and add the recognized text as some type of searchable attribute, attached to each photo. So can I have Live Text OCR my entire photos library? |
Enable/load .plist issue after Big Sur update Posted: 08 Jun 2022 03:08 PM PDT I've spent the last day googling this issue and can't get it figured out. Apparently, Big Sur treats load and unload as legacy and you are supposed to use enable and disable however I've tried many different combinations of commands and still can't get my plist to work. Load and unload give Input/Output errors. I have a script that runs every 30 minutes during the day. It is located in I've tried so many different types of commands using Can somebody please help me get this plist enabled? When I type the above command it doesn't give a message but doesn't give an error either. It just goes to the next line waiting for a new command. |
Better way to access Safari website data on iOS? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 11:00 AM PDT It is really irritating to have to one at a time delete hundreds of cookies/caches from websites I have never visited. (Would that Apple would allow us to block third-party cookies). Is there an API that would allow me to build my own app in Xcode to handle it in a better way? Or something like Cookie 6 (macOS) for iOS? Or someone else's open source that I can compile? I'm not willing to jailbreak, nor to install something with source code not vetted by me or Apple. For example, clearing all website data and then logging in to Facebook.com adds five third-party cookies. Three of them are from domains owned by Facebook, but do not end in Facebook.com. The other two are obviously from advertising services. This is why I use DuckDuckGo for almost everything, and Safari only occasionally. DuckDuckGo lets me clear everything after a session. I use Safari for a few domains where I'd like to keep their cookies only, but the cost of that is consumption of storage space that doesn't benefit me and prevents syncing all the music I'd like. The cookies are less irritating than the consumption of limited storage space. But if third-party cookies are accepted, cross-site tracking is implied. Since I cleared all website data (recently), I have not visited any site with "math" in the name. Only Facebook, UniGen.us, and three SE subdomains. Yet I have a cookie from mathoverflow.com And Safari says it's size is zero bytes. Obviously, it is at least one byte. But more of an issue are the megabytes of third-party local storage resulting in updates and Music syncs failing for insufficient space. |
Microsoft/Windows keyboard number pad with macOS Posted: 08 Jun 2022 01:07 PM PDT I recently purchased a Microsoft keyboard with a number pad. When trying to use the Mac calculator app with the number pad I have an issue where typing a number will clear out previous numbers. E.g if I wanted to type 100 in the calculator, I would press Example: Are my mappings incorrect and causing this issue? MacBook App Store not downloading or updating apps Posted: 08 Jun 2022 10:01 AM PDT When I want to download an app (clicking on the cloud with arrow icon) or when I want to update an app (like XCode), the app gets the "square in circle" icon and stays like this forever.
Is there a command line (in the terminal) to force cancel a started download / update? Is there a place (log file or already installed logging app) to see the errors why App Store is stuck? |

Boot Camp Issue with Mac Pro 3,1 and ATI Radeon RX580 graphics card Posted: 08 Jun 2022 12:05 PM PDT I have a Mac Pro 3,1 with an ATI Radeon RX580 8GB graphics card, a dosDude Catalina (10.15.6) install on an internal SSD and and a Windows 10 Pro (latest Version and updates) install on an internal HD. Both macOS and the Windows work fine along with all parts of the Mac. As I a have the Radeon card I do not have a boot screen until either Catalina has mostly started up or Windows has started to boot, so I cannot change the booting by holding down the Option key. I previously ran El Capitan instead of Catalina, and with that I had installed in Windows the Boot Camp 4 drivers, which allowed me to select macOS from the Boot Camp Assistant and reboot from Windows into El Capitan. From El Capitan I could select the Windows drive in the start up disc control panel and reboot into Windows. However, since upgrading to Catalina, I can still select the Windows drive in the start up disc control panel and reboot into Windows. However if I select macOS from the Boot Camp Assistant and reboot the Mac, it always reboots into Windows. My current work around is to shut down, remove the Windows drive, reboot in to Catalina, select Catalina in the Startup Disk control panel, reboot into Catalina, shut down, re-install the windows drive, start up and it starts up into Catalina again with the Windows disk mounted. I can then just select the Windows drive in the start up disc control panel and reboot into Windows when I need to. From what I have read it's an issue with boot camp not liking the APFS file system Catalina uses. I have also read that a newer version of Boot Camp would fix the issue. I have upgraded Boot Camp to version 6, but this cause other issues in Windows and in the end I had to format the windows drive and re-install it from scratch along with the Boot Camp 4 drivers. Can anybody tell me how I can get this issue sorted out so I can just switch using Boot Camp? Many thanks Duncan |
How can I prevent Cisco AnyConnect VPN from opening on startup? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 12:25 PM PDT Cisco AnyConnect VPN opens whenever I log in and its screen covers everything for a few minutes and can't be minimized. Can I disable pinch to show all open tabs in Safari? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 10:12 AM PDT Too often, when I try to move my cursor and click, or try to drag something or select text, and my two fingers end up on the trackpad at the same time, all my open tabs shrink into this view: This is extremely disruptive as it makes me lose my focus and then I have to locate the page I was currently on, click it and then resume working. I can't tell what this specific feature in Safari is called (I want to still be able to pinch to zoom in and out of a page), and couldn't find info anywhere on how to completely disable it. Can I disable this? (or I can use another browser, obviously...) |

How to quickly move mouse cursor between monitors? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 04:13 PM PDT I have two external monitors, positioned horizontally on each side of my MacBook Pro. When I am working in the far left or far right screens, I find it a little annoying to have to move the cursor all the way across to get to the opposite side (usually requires multiple swipes on the touchpad). Is there some easier way to do this? I already have BetterTouchTool installed but did not see anything in there that would do this. I was thinking of some kind of key combo shortcut I could use that would jump the cursor to the next screen. |
How to simulate location in Safari for macOS? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 05:29 PM PDT I am developer and I'm trying to simulate a different location other than my own on Safari on OS X / macOS. How do I do that? This is not a duplicate of how might one spoof geographic location on a desktop Mac. That question is about spoofing the location system-wide. I am not trying to (and actually don't want to) spoof my location system-wide, I just want to change it for Safari only. |
Posted: 08 Jun 2022 02:20 PM PDT I think the only thing I like about Windows is the fact that you can easily enter Unicode characters using the Alt key plus the numeric keypad. I hate using the Show Emoji & Symbols for this sort of thing as it's very tedious and I can't find a way of entering a code I already know. I know that OS X allows Unicode input using the Unicode Hex Input source, but when enabled I can't use the option key to enter other useful characters. For example the typographical apostrophe (') now requires the full unicode (2019) rather than the original keyboard combination. The question is: is there anything which allows me to easily enter unicode without losing the use of the option key for the rest? |
Is there a way to prevent those pesky .DS_Store files from being ever created? Posted: 08 Jun 2022 12:25 PM PDT Is there a way (eg. a binary hack into Finder) to stop it from creating .DS-Stores on LOCAL Volumes? I am using Leopard, therefore these don't work:
