Can't enable SSH on Catalina - System Preferences keeps saying "Remote Login starting..."

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 11:25 AM PDT

I just did a complete reinstall of my late 2012 Mac Mini, with the latest OS it supports: Catalina (10.15.7). I'm trying to enable remote login via SSH, but when I check the box in System Preferences → Sharing, it keeps saying "Remote Login starting..." and I can't connect to it via SSH.

It looks like the same problem mentioned here. How can I fix this?

Buying apple Mac from second hand [closed]

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 12:06 PM PDT

I am buying a second hand mac 16 inch and it's decent price (only buy it because it's tuning out of stock atm) and this person state that this mac is from office and it's new . Now red flag I have is that he said it's from office new and no receipt ofc. I checked it's not tie to any previous Apple ID and it's not in MDM so clean from those part . But should I consider it as I don't know if there is any drawback as this device he has is technically a office device

External Monitor Sound Volume Slider AND auto switching

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 10:23 AM PDT

I just switched from an iMac to a MacBook 14 inch. I've swapped out my iMac with a Samsung HDMI monitor with a speaker, and it plays sound correctly. However, the volume slider is disabled. I could fix this with Proxy Audio device, as it routed the sound through a volume-changing-compatible device to the monitor. However, when I unplugged my MacBook to go places, I had to change my sound output back to the internal speakers because the Samsung monitor was no longer attached. Then I tried creating a multi-output device with both the monitor and built-in speakers, but the monitor had enough lag that it was nearly impossible to listen to anything with the monitor making a louder echo of the MacBook (which I keep in a vented cabinet with a dock).

So this is my request - can I have my Mac switch to my monitor speakers, with full volume control, when I plug in my monitor, then switch back to the internal speakers when I unplug the monitor? Finally, if this cannot be done for free, I'll just switch the output myself every time I leave or consider using the macbook's internal speakers. Thanks in advance.

How can I locate other Apple ID and remove it?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 09:51 AM PDT

I have checked my settings and appleid.apple.com to no avail. It's the same and enter image description hereonly email I use. Same one as ICloud too. I feel my is compromised. Under messages settings, my email is entered and grey. The check mark to the left of it is blue. By clicking on my email below my Apple ID I can just change location. My number is not there anymore. I need those messages and feel like there is a lot Apple isn't telling me. The IPad is the only thing attached to that account…to my knowledge.

Is there a way to copy content from a broken (no display) m1 macbook to another m1 macbook?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 07:43 AM PDT

The broken MacBook is an M1, still turns on, but the display is broken so no visual. There are no external monitors to connect either. I don't wanna do any open-heart surgery on the broken MacBook either, such as removing the disk etc.

I found that we can connect the two MacBooks using USB-C or Thunderbolt cable, then use the Target Disk Mode. Unfortunately, to do this, the broken MacBook needs to have a display which I don't have.

What other pragmatic approaches do I have to get the content copied to the new MacBook?

top: Is there a way to display the memory usage in percent and not in MB / GB

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 07:48 AM PDT

With top application, one can display the list of application sorted according to memory usage from highest so smallest with

top -o MEM

Is there a way to display the memory usage in percent and not in MB / GB?

For example, part of the output is the following:

PID COMMAND %CPU MEM 401 firefox 10.1 675M 430 Finder 9.8 146M

With 16GB of RAM, I would assume that 675/16000=0.0421875 and 146/16000 = 0.009125. Therefore I would like to have something like this instead:

PID COMMAND %CPU %MEM 401 firefox 10.1 4.2% 430 Finder 9.8 0.9%

What is this "Setup" option in my iCloud?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 05:00 AM PDT

It looks like some sort of bug. This icon disapears after turning off "iCloud Drive" couple positions above this. After turning "iCloud Drive" on and some time later this icon reapears. I tried restarting my iPhone. I also tried "Erase all content and settings" without backup and starting from the sctratch. When I was reintalling my apps I tried to establish WHEN this icon appears in iCloud, maybe with specific app or something but no luck... I this some kind of virus? Should I be worrying about safety of my data and for exaple paying with my phone? Maybe this is some kind of spying virus?? Should I be looking for help from Apple support?

Lost iPhone. 2FA

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 04:25 AM PDT

Initial situation:

You are new to the Apple world, but you know that if you have 2 iPhones and one is lost, you can use the other iPhone to lock the lost one via the Find My app. But they must be connected to the same Apple ID.

But what if you only have a single phone and that phone even has the trusted phone number for 2FA from the Apple ID.

Then couldn't the thief reset the phone or iCloud with the phone number?

And would that mean you'll never find your phone again because you can't locate it? If you think buying a new iPhone, signing in with the Apple ID and then locking it like that doesn't work, 2FA is required and we don't have the phone number.

What now?

In-App Purchase for Hardware-As-A-Service

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 04:07 AM PDT

We are currently working on a Hardware-As-A-Service model in which we are going to sell our hardware products with a monthly subscription.

The customers will first buy this subscription from our website and when they receive the hardware, they will have to use the application on the App Store in order to login with their credentials and be able to control the hardware. If for any reason the subscription is not renewed the application will block the access to the customer and therefore they won't be able to use the product.

Our app doesn't have premium services, however the hardware and app are not usable without the subscription. The question here is, is it a must to have an In-App Purchase through the application or can I just rely on the website to manage the subscriptions?

Thank you for the help.

Open Superdrive mini-menu - where's this from?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 04:01 AM PDT

Mac Pro 5,1 with built-in Superdrive. macOS Mojave.

After several reboots where I was changing 'Displays have separate Spaces' - ie nothing at all relevant to the Superdrive - this extra menu item appeared in the right side of the menu bar.

enter image description here

I've never seen it before. I assume it's from some 3rd party utility but I can't think what. I doubt it's an Apple system utility, as it seems to have [visually] hijacked F12, rather than the default Eject button. [I say visually, because all it does is beep when I actually press F12, it doesn't actually function as Eject. The real Eject key still works.] Selecting Open Superdrive from the menu item itself does open the drawer.

Has anyone any idea what this might belong to, or how to get rid of it?

How can I browse my previous Mac Time Machine Backup?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 05:03 AM PDT

I did move from an iMac to a Mac Mini and I did use the same TM disk but I did not restore from TM backup since I was moving from intel to M1

When I connect the backup TM ask me if I want to inherit previous backup and I said YES

I can see on the right hand side older bars from when I started backing up the Mac mini but I don't know how to access them

Port forwarding

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 06:18 AM PDT

I would like to intercept the tcp traffic from a device on my network. I cannot change the destination but I set the router IP to the IP of my M1 Mac Mini.

I used to do this with ipfw on a virtual machine running Ubuntu. I used these command to accomplish the interception:

sudo iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -d 176.58.117.69 --dport 10004 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.245.32 sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -t nat -p tcp -d 176.58.117.69 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.245.32

I want to obtain the same result with pf on MacOS Monterey. I added a new anchor file under /private/etc/pf.anchors containing: rdr pass proto tcp from any to 176.58.117.69 -> self

Sending a packet to that address on port 10004 from another computer with the IP of the Mac Mini as router IP and running nc -l 10004 on the Mac Mini does not return anything.

I checked that the rules do not contain an error with sudo pfctl -vnf /private/etc/pf.conf The rules were loaded with pfctl -ef /private/etc/pf.conf What am I missing?

BitLocker on Bootcamp Windows 7, 13" Macbook Air 2011?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 03:13 AM PDT

How can I enable BitLocker under Bootcamp Windows 7 on Macbook Air 2011? Is it even possible at all?

Following this answer to an earlier question, I tried to "copy the EFI binaries" with bcdboot and failed:

  1. Can't mountvol b: /s: the /s is not among allowed switches; results in The parameter is incorrect

  2. Can't bcdboot c:\windows /s b: /f UEFI: the /f switch is not supported for bcdboot under Windows 7, per its no-parameters output

  3. For diskpart, it's unclear which disk and volume (partition) to use. I have 5 partitions, one of them unallocated; none displaying EFI:

    Windows Disk Management screenshot

I tried to proceed without copying EFI:

I enabled Allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM with gpedit.msc and invoked Turn on Bitlocker for C:.

After confirming "Are you ready to encrypt this drive?" (captured below), Windows rebooted into black screen; no Safe Boot available either: Are you ready to encrypt this drive?

Background: Windows 7 is already installed long time ago, with a huge amount of user data currenly on Windows volume. Originally I had Professional edition; I just upgraded it to Ultimate edition. Bootcamp 5.0 was installed in a standard manner, also long time ago. Air 2011 does not have TPM module. I also enabled FileVault under MacOS just recently.

What is going on with WindowServer?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 05:04 AM PDT

I know WindowServer manages all the windows on my system. I know that's going to scale with multiple monitors, etc.

At times though... it seems it's working a lot harder than it should if it's just watching all the tabs that I have open in chrome.

In any given top -o cpu command it's almost always the MVP.

So what is it doing? I assume window management is fairly event driven, and static windows should not be an issue. So can someone help demystify this hard working program, and help give it credit for it's work? (Because I really hope it's using all these cycles for something)

Does VirtualBox run on Apple Silicon?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 09:25 AM PDT

I have a new M1 MacBook Air that I would like to use for Virtual Machine development.

Can Oracle VirtualBox VMs run on this new Apple Silicon architecture?

The documentation on the VirtualBox website states:

In order to run VirtualBox on your machine, you need:

  • Reasonably powerful x86 hardware. Any recent Intel or AMD processor should do.

But it's unclear if that documentation is current, or if there are any future plans to support the Apple Silicon ARM architecture. I have not been able to find a VirtualBox blog post or news update that states that M1 chips will or won't be supported.

macOS Big Sur System Preferences Notifications Customize

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 12:02 PM PDT

I am running os 11.2.3 and wanted to customize notifications from system preferences. Specifically, software update notifications show up when there is a new version to upgrade to. However, they always show up as alert notifications. I would like them to display as banners, so it will disappear even if I do not dismiss it. Looking at System Preferences --> Notifications, there is no option for 'System Preferences' unlike other apps (Safari, Messages, etc.). How can I change the settings/format for the system preference notifications? Thank you in advance.

Older MacBook Pro doesn't see new modern Bluetooth speaker, why not?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 06:00 AM PDT

MacBook Pro Mid 2012 readily connects to all my modern Bluetooth devices except it doesn't see my new Sony SRS XB43 speaker.

I turn off any devices that my MBP tries to connect to so only the Sony speaker is available with its Bluetooth light blinking to indicate attempting to pair, but it has never shown up on the MBP Bluetooth list.

The speaker readily connects to my iPhone 6 Plus.

Is there a way to manually enter the device address of the speaker to my MBP?

I have restarted MBP, debug Bluetooth on MBP to reset module, restarted again, turned speaker off and on etc.

Is the MBP so old now it cant see modern Bluetooth devices? I havent been able to test this idea yet with a modern Mac to see if it can discover the speaker.

Any help much appreciated thank you

Troubleshooting: 90 seconds to eject external Time Machine drive?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 02:57 AM PDT

I have a 5TB USB-C drive attached to my 16" MacBook Pro running Big Sur 11.2.3. I use this drive exclusively for Time Machine. When ejecting the drive, it takes anywhere from 90 - 120 seconds before the drive is ejected. This happens even when Time Machine is not actively backing up to the drive. A couple OSs back, I remember thinking 15 seconds was a long time to wait for a drive to eject, but now, 90+ seconds feels like forever.

What steps can I take to troubleshoot and shorten the ejection time?

Update

I plugged the drive in this morning. After letting Time Machine run, I waited for it to finish and ran the command from @jaume :

Anthony@Vincent ~ % sudo lsof +d /Volumes/LaCie.Backup COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME mds 90 root 21r DIR 1,16 510 2 /Volumes/LaCie.Backup mds 90 root 25r DIR 1,16 510 2 /Volumes/LaCie.Backup mds 90 root 27r DIR 1,16 510 2 /Volumes/LaCie.Backup mds 90 root 31r DIR 1,16 510 2 /Volumes/LaCie.Backup mds 90 root 34r DIR 1,16 510 2 /Volumes/LaCie.Backup

I waited another 10 minutes ran the command a second time to see if mds was still using the drive and the results were the same.

While ejecting the drive, I ran the command and the output was:

Anthony@Vincent ~ % sudo lsof +d /Volumes/LaCie.Backup lsof: WARNING -- child process 72811 may be hung. Anthony@Vincent ~ %

Update #2

I added the drive to Spotlight exceptions and reran the lsof command. I noticed that there are now 3 mds processes rather than 5:

Anthony@Vincent ~ % sudo lsof +d /Volumes/LaCie.Backup COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME mds 90 root 21r DIR 1,16 510 2 /Volumes/LaCie.Backup mds 90 root 24r DIR 1,16 510 2 /Volumes/LaCie.Backup mds 90 root 28r DIR 1,16 510 2 /Volumes/LaCie.Backup

Right-clicking and selecting Eject from the context menu still takes quite a while to eject the drive. During that time, I ran the lsof command and received the following output:

Anthony@Vincent ~ % sudo lsof +d /Volumes/LaCie.Backup lsof: WARNING -- child process 73283 may be hung. COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME Finder 431 Anthony 15r DIR 1,6 160 23740 /Volumes Finder 431 Anthony 16r DIR 1,6 160 23740 /Volumes

The Finder commands appeared in the results right before the drive disappeared from the desktop.

However, running diskutil unmount /dev/disk3 from Terminal ejects the drive almost immediately.

Why would Finder take so long to eject the drive? I would've thought Finder was using diskutil in the background.

Update #3 (final update)

After a reboot, Finder, diskutil, and Alfred -- the 3 ways I use to eject this drive -- all seem to work fine. My Mac also restarts and shuts down much faster.

Thank you @jaume for the constructive comments. Can a comment be marked as an answer?

Update #4 (Final, FINAL, update, post accepted answer)

A month or so on from this, I was still having slow eject times. My tests ejecting the drive were done after a reboot but before Time Machine had a chance to run.

The answer from Jaume was helpful but I don't think it solved the problem.

The drive was purchased when I was running Catalina and I don't think Catalina supported Time Machine disks formatted with APFS. Now that Big Sur does support the format, I updated the drive to APFS and the eject times are now in the 5 second range.

After numerous restarts and Time Machine backups, the disk is quickly ejecting.

Also, in Big Sur, Time Machine drives are no longer able to be added to Spotlight Privacy:

Mute/Unmute Microsoft Teams Microphone Using Mouse Button when Teams is Not Focused

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 10:07 AM PDT

I would like to mute and unmute Microsoft Teams, using a spare mouse button, when the application is not focussed. I am using a Microsoft Sculpt mouse and have a couple spare buttons, particularly the navigate back button, which I would like to reassign to the mute function.

The reason I want to do this is because I am typically having a conversation while working in another application and I want to avoid the delay and context switching of having to focus the Teams Application before either clicking on the mute button or using the command+shift+m keyboard shortcut.

It's inconvenient enough that I have considered using something like Touch Portal on my phone to create an easy hot button but that application isn't signed.

Microsoft does not provide Mac drivers for the Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse or Sculpt Ergonomic desktop.

When does Messages message via iMessage vs. SMS?

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 04:05 AM PDT

This is probably an embarrassingly noobish question.

I sent a standard SMS text message from my iPhone 6 to a colleague's iPhone, who mentioned that my message was green and not blue, and that meant I hadn't activated something or wasn't using the right app to take advantage of iMessaging.

Currently I don't use apps beyond what came with my phone. To send SMS text messages I use the green callout balloon button that's near the phone button.

enter image description here

My colleague said I could save money by using iMessage instead of paying for each SMS text message. I countered by saying that if it's not SMS then that means I'd have to keep my phone connected to the internet 24/7 to receive messages and I don't do that.

My colleague then said something like it does but doesn't use SMS, so I wouldn't have to maintain an internet connection 24/7 to receive prompt iMessages and yet would not have to pay for SMS messages when I did.

A quick search turns up plenty of tutorials about how to use iMessages but so far I have not found a clear and concise explanation.

Is it possible to explain in a few clear sentences how the messaging functionality works on my iPhone 6 and when internet is used and when traditional SMS messages are used? For example:

  • Does it check first for an active internet connection on the sender's phone?
  • Does it also check if the recipient is also connected to the internet?
  • Could a message go out as an iMessage and then not be delivered even though the recipient could have received an SMS text message?

How to record system audio? (Soundflower not working)

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 04:11 AM PDT

I've been trying to record some system audio from my computer while screen capturing in Quicktime Player. The thing is, I've done this before. I've recorded myself talking and the system audio through an aggregate device in Soundflower. I was also able to hear the system audio by using a multi-output device as my output.

For clarification, here are screenshots of the setups I've tried.

This is the first one I tried, because it's what I remembered from what I did before.

With this setup, I was able to hear the sound from my computer, but could not adjust the volume, and when I tried, instead of the usual popup showing the changing volume, I got this:

When I tried recording audio using Quicktime Player, it picked up the sound from my microphone, but no system audio.

When this setup didn't work, I searched for an answer on google. Every single tutorial I saw said to set Soundflower (2ch) as both my input and output. (Some said only to set it as output, but then later chose it as the input for Quicktime Player). I tried that like so:

With this setup, I could not hear any sound from my computer. However, I could adjust the volume on my computer, not that it seemed to do anything. I tried recording with Quicktime Player, but it didn't record either the volume from my microphone or the system audio.

I would like to have a setup that only records my system audio, and one that records both my mic and system audio. Optimally, I'd be able to hear the system audio in both cases.

I checked to make sure that the audio wasn't just really quiet, and I did all the basic things like restarting my computer.

So, what should I do? I'd be happy to provide any more details if necessary.

EDIT: An update. I noticed that with the second setup, I was able to hear Skype calls (people talking, not just the ringing), despite not being able to hear anything else. Also, people on Skype were able to hear me with the first setup, but not the second. In neither case could they hear the system audio. Not sure if this is useful information or not, I just wanted to be as detailed as possible.

Open app in background from Terminal

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 05:17 AM PDT

I'm trying to open an app in the background from the Terminal by using the -g or --background flags like so

open -g -a Franz

Unfortunately, the app isn't opening in the background. I've also tried the j flag, which is supposed to hide the app, according to the help:

Usage: open [-e] [-t] [-f] [-W] [-R] [-n] [-g] [-h] [-b <bundle identifier>] [-a <application>] [filenames] [--args arguments] Help: Open opens files from a shell. By default, opens each file using the default application for that file. If the file is in the form of a URL, the file will be opened as a URL. Options: -a Opens with the specified application. -b Opens with the specified application bundle identifier. -e Opens with TextEdit. -t Opens with default text editor. -f Reads input from standard input and opens with TextEdit. -F --fresh Launches the app fresh, that is, without restoring windows. Saved persistent state is lost, excluding Untitled documents. -R, --reveal Selects in the Finder instead of opening. -W, --wait-apps Blocks until the used applications are closed (even if they were already running). --args All remaining arguments are passed in argv to the application's main() function instead of opened. -n, --new Open a new instance of the application even if one is already running. -j, --hide Launches the app hidden. -g, --background Does not bring the application to the foreground. -h, --header Searches header file locations for headers matching the given filenames, and opens them.

The app opens in the foreground as if the I had simply called

open -a Franz

Any idea why this doesn't work and an alternative?

Sparsebundle backups displayed as folders with cryptic name on network drive

Posted: 12 Jun 2022 02:04 AM PDT

I just updated from Yosemite to El Capitan. I have two backups, one being done with Time Machine and one with Carbon Copy Cloner. Both sparsebundles are stored on a NAS (Synology DS213). After the update everything still works as before. I can do backups and verifying them shows them as being there and functional.

However, navigating to the Backup folder on the NAS using Finder shows the sparsebundles as folders, not as sparsebundles. So instead of: Backup.sparsebundle I now have: C33YRS~D

Trying to open them launches Terminal. I restarted the MAC and also the NAS, the sparsebundles are still displayed as folders.

What happened? Does anybody have the same issue? Can I just rename these files back to their original name or is there something else I am missing?
