How to make a Shortcuts message automation to add number to a contact

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 03:00 PM PDT

I'd like to create a shortcuts automation on my phone to automatically add spam messages to a "Spam" contact. However, I can't get the shortcut to work. This is what I currently have

enter image description here

This is for a "when I get a message containing text" automation.

This pops up the automation whenever I get a message, but when I run it, it does nothing.

My external keyboard (Sharkoon Skiller PRO) is not mapped properly for macOS

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 04:27 PM PDT

These are the following key swaps:

  • Q is mapped to X
  • Caps Lock as Rewind
  • Tab and Backspace as Backslash

The keyboard works well with no setup on Linux, Windows, and Android but it doesn't seem to like macOS much.

I tried this method but no luck :(

Automatically add incoming .ics calendar invites to my iCloud calendar

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:56 PM PDT

Is there a way for Mail on my Mac to automatically add .ics calendar invites to my iCloud calendar? I am used to Outlook automatically showing calendar invites as tentative in my calendar, but with Apple tools I need to explicitly click on the .ics file to have it show up in my calendar. Embarrassingly, I've already missed a couple meetings because of this - and really want to see all my invites in my calendar automatically. I'm desperate for a solution and using 3rd party software or scripting is fine if it solves the problem!

NOTE: there is a very old solution to the problem here, but the option no longer exists (I am using Mail version 15.0): Automating .ics import from Mail to iCal

How to resize multiple photos (batch) in Apple Photos app on macOS

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:26 PM PDT

Having 1 TB of photos and videos in Photos.app, one might want to resize some old photos or even videos so that the changes are perfectly updated in the Photos.app and the overall size of it decreases.

We know that touching the originals within the package contents of .photoslibrary might result in corrupted library. I have tried resizing original photos with sips, convert or other programs in bash, and the changes are visible on Photos app. However the metadata is not updated (original is 4000x2000, resized is 640x480 and photos app still shows 4000x2000 while the photo is 640x480).

There are a lot of apps that interact with Photos.app like Photo Sweeper, Power Photos, etc. However I couldn't find any that allows to batch resize.

Couldn't find a way to do that with Automator or applescript although there are scripts interacting with the Photos app.

Seems a very common use case but I couldn't find any answer on the web.

Reverse scrolling per individual mouse

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:53 AM PDT

I know this is a thing for mouse and trackpad and I know the application "Scroll Reverser".

What I'm looking for is an app that let me set the scroll direction per individual mouse.
I want my magic mouse to be in the other direction like a mouse with a physical scroll wheel.

I only use the second mouse with the physical scroll wheel for blender and would like it to be reversed. Just got used to it with the Magic Mouse because it's intuitive like on the trackpad, but the second I have a scroll wheel in my hand this feels wrong.

Any suggestions?

Slightly off topic for the title, but an app that would let me set scroll direction per app would also work for me.

Mac won't even TRY a password

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:45 AM PDT

I don't mean it won't accept my password, I mean it won't even try it.

First thing that happened: I came back to my computer and typed a password, and it disabled the password field like it does when you type it wrong (I probably did), but it stayed that way for minutes. "Cancel" and "Switch User" options were ignored. Eventually I gave up and unplugged the machine and closed the lid, to see if the suspend/resume might change anything.

Now the password field is active, I can type in it, but it's not doing anything - if I typed something wrong, there should be a delay before I can try again. Or there should be a delay if I type the correct password. Nothing. I can always type in the password field immediately. The "Cancel" and "Switch User" options are also ignored.

Yes, I can probably just reboot, but I was in the middle of some things.

Any ideas?

Edit: If I close the lid and re-open, the password field is cleared. "Cancel" does not work, even before password entry, so clearly something is not functioning.

Sync iBooks highlights, bookmarks, etc., without uploading epubs to iCloud Drive

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:22 AM PDT

In the past, it was possible to sync (i)Books bookmarks, highlights, etc., through the cloud, without turning on iCloud Drive for the Books app, or uploading personal epubs (not purchased from Apple) to iCloud Drive. Has this been removed from iOS?

Using iOS 9.3.6 for example, it was possible to do this by turning on Settings > iBooks > Sync Bookmarks and Notes, and Sync Collections, while having Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive > iBooks turned off. Books were not uploaded to iCloud Drive. The highlights etc. were synced using the Apple ID used for iTunes/AppStore/iBooks purchases, which is not necessarily the same as the Apple ID used for iCloud. Books could be synced from the Mac with a cable, with Books disabled in iCloud Drive. The Mac's Books Preferences > General > Sync: "Sync collections, bookmarks and highlights" is checked, and highlights and bookmarks were synced through the cloud, in real time.

I got a new device with iOS 15, and there is only Settings > Books > iCloud Drive, and Reading Now. Below this, it says "To enable syncing across devices, sign in to iCloud and turn on iCloud Drive in Settings". I haven't done that, but I think it will trigger the books that I synced with a cable from the Mac, to be uploaded to iCloud Drive, which I don't want. But I can't see how to get the highlights and bookmarks to sync without that - none of the books on the new device have their bookmarks.

Mac OS JBOD Array - incorrect total size

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:54 PM PDT

I've got a Mac Mini with a bunch of external hard drives configured as a single JBOD array. I recently got a new drive and tried to expand the array by clicking the "+" in the lower portion of the disk utility screen.

I got an error that the addition was unsuccessful. However, now I see two things that are strange. First, the drive shows up in the RAID set anyway. Second, the overall size of the array didn't change - it's still the same as it was before I added the disk.

More info - it's an APFS array. It created it in a little different way than I was used to in the past - it shows up as a RAID set (unmounted) that has an APFS Container disk. That container disk has an APFS volume that is mounted. Interestingly, the unmounted RAID set shows the correct overall size, while the mounted child APFS volume shows the incorrect size. Both show the new drive as a member of the pool.

I tried unmounting it, running first aid on the whole array, restarting my computer, and deleting that specific drive from the array but nothing works. I'd love any pointers or ideas for what to try next. Thank you!

Update - a new run of first aid gave me the following error message:

warning: bitmap store: reached limit of 23040 B-tree nodes

Running MacBook Pro M1 16" on less than 140 watt charger

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 02:36 PM PDT

The MacBook Pro M1 16" comes with a 140 watt charger, with MagSafe plug.

I vaguely recall that such a charger provides rapid charging, but so many watts are not required. I recall that this MacBook Pro can run, without fast charging, on just under 100 watts (98 or 96 W?) with a charger plugged into a Thunderbolt port rather than MagSafe.

This lower watt usage is important, because if the MacBook Pro 16" tolerates under 100 watts, it can be powered from Thunderbolt dock rather than the bundled charger.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any documentation to this point. The Apple specifications page provides no such details.

Can anyone confirm my recollection, and provide details or documentation?

How can I listen for when a disk image is ejected on OS X?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 10:26 AM PDT

I am looking for a way to determine whether or not a volume was recently ejected on OS X. Specifically when a DMG volume is unmounted/ejected but I don't understand enough about the system to know whether or not the solution for that is different from a disk drive image.

It does not need to be instantaneous, but I don't think a cron job which checks the number of mounted volumes every X minutes would be useful because a volume could be mounted and unmounted in between runs.

Shortcut / Siri Command for iPad as second monitor

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:48 PM PDT

I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro. To turn on the iPad as a second monitor, I have to go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays > Add Display (dropdown) > Select iPad

Is there a way to ask Siri to do this with a single command or another way to make a shortcut?

Modifiers key does not work

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:48 PM PDT

This is something that is starting to get in my nerves. Basically I am mapping the Command key to Control key, it is being stressful for me to try the typical combinations (Copy/Cut/Paste) with Command. This menu in settings looks pretty straightforward to change this behaviour but it does not work at all.

Would I need to set up another configuration?

Connecting Bluetooth headset to MacBook Pro, won't last more than a second

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 10:05 AM PDT

I'm trying to connect my bluetooth headset to a MacBook Pro (my work laptop).

(It's an Anko/Kmart neckband with earphones and mic, which is working perfectly with all other Windows/Android devices).

On my Mac, I can see the headset in System Preferences > Bluetooth.

The headset in System Preferences > Bluetooth

When I hit Connect:

  1. "Not Connected" changes to "Connected", while I hear the "connected sound" in my headset,
  2. immediately followed by "disconnected sound", while the "Connected" changes back to "Not Connected"

It won't stay connected for more than a second, often less than a second.
Any idea how to fix this?

Is Apple known to blacklist developers for conduct that takes place outside of official distribution channels?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 02:17 PM PDT

Let's say I develop an app and sell it in the App Store. I make sure the app complies with all of Apple's policies. But outside the App Store, it's clear from social media that I'm in favor of jailbreaking. Maybe I develop apps that wouldn't be allowed in the App Store and distribute them over unofficial channels. Or maybe I have another version of the same app that doesn't adhere to Apple's policies, which I distribute outside the App Store. If Apple finds out about that, would that likely be a problem in practice, assuming I don't promote any of that stuff within my app or its App Store listing?

My MacBook fails to login, and I suspect it's because of FileVault decryption

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:57 AM PDT

When I try to log-in to my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running macOS Monterey, the log-in progress bar reaches the middle before suddenly restarting, saying that the computer's experienced a problem. I am currently in the middle of FileVault decryption. There have been a few times where I've been able to successfully log-in, and I've attached the description of the problem that appears. The only times that I've been able to successfully log-in were when the power adapter is not attached to the computer, however there have been times where, even though the computer isn't attached to the power adapter, I still am unable to login to the computer. In the cases where I am able to login, attaching the power adapter to the computer immediately results in the computer freezing and then restarting.

I have already tried to

How can I generate a spreadsheet of a folder structure on my computer with folder sizes included?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:02 PM PDT

I'd like to make a spreadsheet of a folder structure in my filesystem. Given a parent folder or volume as the input, the output should include:

  1. Subfolders to the nth level (user-specified)
  2. A clean/readable visual format showing the folder names and their hierarchy (perhaps each next level in the path breaks out to a new column)
  3. The total size of each folder in GB

You can't copy and paste more than the names of files directly from Finder, so I understand Terminal / zsh would be the way to achieve this. What command line code would output this result?

What I've tried:

Changing directory to the desired folder in Terminal and running du -k -d 3 gets me somewhat close (-k meaning kilobytes and -d 3 meaning depth of 3). But it's quite an unruly list that is tedious to translate into a spreadsheet format.

I'd still prefer to export a .csv from that, generate GB to the second decimal place instead of KB, and perhaps have each level in the path name break out into a new column of the .csv.

Normal for external SanDisk SSD 2T taking over 2 minutes to access files? Use not to

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:27 AM PDT

So I have a MBP 16" 2019 on Monterey 12.13.1 and using Sandisk external SSD drive partitioned Mac OS journaled and Windows ExFAT. Up to now when mounting the drive all loaded pretty quickly, matter of seconds. I last used the drive 4 days ago for a time machine backup. When I plugged it in today to move some emails to it, the drive and both partitions showed in finder in about 3 seconds, but when I went to access the Mac partition it took over 2 minutes to load.

I then ejected the drive and remounted - same - over 2 minutes to load the Mac part.

How can I tell why the access time has changed to be over 2 minutes? Also I did First Aid on the Mac partition which took 10 minutes to complete. Here are the results:

results

Here is the drive info:

drive info

The only other odd behavior I notice is that before today when ejecting the drive I would pick one partition and eject it then answer "Yes" to eject all drives question. Today, I no longer get that question every time when ejecting.

Here is some more info:

I also tried this, "wmmbp@MacBook-Pro ~ % sudo fs_usage |grep SanDisk Mac grep: Mac: No such file or directory"

But it did not work.....

Stop facetime video pausing when switching spaces

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 03:18 PM PDT

When I facetime call from my macbook (macOS Mojave) how can I stop the facetime video from turning off when I switch spaces (especially to full-screened apps, especially Safari)?

How can I see ALL global shortcuts currently active across Finder + other apps?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 03:03 PM PDT

I've just started using Amethyst and would love to be able to use the CTRL+optn+NumPad[0-9] shortcuts, but some of these just don't work and I'm assuming something else already has these shortcuts that are overriding Amethyst's. I've looked in SysPrefs/Keyboard Shortcuts, as well as some of the other apps like Alfred and Keyboard Maestro, but there's nothing with those matching key combinations.

Is there a way to globally retrieve ALL possible keyboard shortcuts that are currently active across the system?

Macbook Air 2017 Black Dots On Screen

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 04:02 PM PDT

Recently I observed some black dots on the bottom of the screen on my MacBook Air 2017. They appeared suddenly. I don't know what's going on with it! Do I have to replace the entire display because of it? And lastly, is my display going to die soon?

Any idea what's that, and how to fix it?

16GB M1 Mac running slow after couple days of usage

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:03 AM PDT

After a fresh restart, everything is smooth. During the next couple of days of regular usage of the system, a problem of responsiveness gradually increases, until you can count a full second between you swiping a desktop and the system actually responding to the gesture.

I've tried reducing memory pressure by closing high memory apps, but it doesn't help at all.

Video demonstration here.

How do you disable Command + Tab (App switcher) in Monterey so that window switcher shortcuts from other applications can replace it?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 01:04 PM PDT

I'm trying out Raycast app without any prior experience of its kind such as Alfred. To my astonishment, it has a built-in Switch Windows functionality which I can assign a hotkey. I am trying to replace the hotkey for Mac OS' App Switcher with that of Raycast's Window Switcher(CMD+Tab). However, it seems (CMD+Tab) is not an overridable shortcut.

I seriously hate how app switcher works and would love to adopt a more reasonable window switcher without additional applications. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Can't find AirPlay on macOS High Sierra

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 02:03 PM PDT

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro with macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 installed.

I have just found out that my Smart LG TV with webOS has AirPlay incorporated so, I would like to mirror my MacBook Pro screen on my TV.

However I can't find AirPlay on my MacBook. Already searched for some solutions on Google but the only option that I found was to go to Screen Settings on System Preferences and turn on "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" which it is. However the AirPlay icon doesn't appear in the Menu Bar.

Does anyone know how to solve this? Is my MacBook too old to support AirPlay?

Bluetooth lagging on Macbook Pro 16 inch 2019

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 01:53 PM PDT

I have a Magic Mouse connected to my new Macbook Pro 2019. The mouse is horribly lagging. I have another bluetooth device, a pair of Sony headphones, that is working horribly too.

Analysis:

  1. Both devices work perfectly with Macbook Pro 2018 in the very same location.
  2. I suspected interference with the Wifi(2.4 GHz) but when I turned it off the devices were still lagging
  3. Both devices are 100% charged
  4. The mouse's sensor is clean

I tried to reset PRAM and SMC, removed everything related to mouse from /Library/Preferences/, nothing helps.

BT signal strength on both Macbooks is the same: ~ -52 dBm.

I'd appreciate any help!

My Mac crashes and shuts down when charger is unplugged, not immediately

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:03 PM PDT

Hey so my Macbook Pro (Retina 15" 2014 i7 2.6GHz, High Sierra (institute doesn't allow me to update)) is turning itself off randomly, and as far as I've figured out this will only occur when the power is unplugged. At first I found it being more common when my laptop was feeling quite hot, and perhaps even my laptop seems to start overheating when I unplug it? This is very possibly not the case though, I'm trying to find a pattern where there might not be one.

I reset the SMC and did all the other stuff listed on the apple website of "what to do if your mac keeps shutting off".

The screen seems to go off with a backlight still on for some time, and then either it gets stuck and I have to hold down power to shut it down, or it fully shuts down itself. This can occur after 3 hours of no problems using battery, or it can happen within 5 mins and then every 5 mins thereafter for the next 30-45 mins.

I have no sudo privileges fwiw, if there's no solution I can do myself, I'll take it to my institute whose laptop it is, but given current situation I'm trying to avoid making that journey.

Thanks!

How do I access files downloaded through Telegram?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:24 PM PDT

How can I disable iMessage suggestions in iOS 13’s share menu?

Start a video at a specific time using terminal

The volume can't be ejected because it's currently in use

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:56 PM PDT

After working with an external USB backup disk I want to cleanly unmount the drive. When pressing the 'eject' button Finder warns me with the message:

  • "The volume can't be ejected because it's currently in use."

or

  • "The disk "Diskname" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it.".

or when trying to use the Terminal: umount /Volumes/Diskname

  • "umount(/Volumes/Diskname): Resource busy -- try 'diskutil unmount'"

As far as I am aware, I am not using this disk but Finder says I do, so I must be wrong. I prefer a clean unmount of the drive. As I am in the middle of doing multiple tasks, logging out and logging in is not preferred as is the installation of third party software.

Terminal command lsof might be of use here, but personally I think this is too complex for such a 'simple' problem and to be honest, I do not know how to use it properly.

My question: How do I know what program is using my drive so I can properly quit that program and eject my drive?

The volume can't be ejected because it's currently in use. The disk "Camel" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it. The disk "Mammtoh" wasn't ejected because one or more programs... xkcd

Good resources for those transitioning to Mac OS X from Windows

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 10:35 AM PDT

I'm going to be getting a new MacBook laptop as part of the PhD programme I've just started, but have never used Macs before in my life. I'm quite an advanced computer user (running an informal computer repair business for Windows PCs), but I can see that I might just get frustrated with it at first as I don't know some of the standard OS X ways of doing things.

Does anyone have suggestions for resources that could teach me these standard ways of doing things, or any other guides to someone transitioning from Windows?

What's the proper way to start a sentence with the word "think"?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 01:02 PM PDT

For example, when trying to describe a product or service on a landing page, how do you arrange the commas and quotes?

Concrete example:

[clip art describing your product here]

Think, 'Uber meets laundry'!

Does any part of that sentence belong in quotes? Should there be a comma after the word 'think'?

Meaning of "he'd been had" in this song [duplicate]

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:07 AM PDT

There is a song which starts with

Juno was mad, he knew he'd been had
So he shot at the sun with a gun
...

But I'm having trouble trying to understand the expression "he knew he'd been had" in this situation... or any situation for that matter. I believe it must be some idiom.

Song is "Ruler of everything" from Tally Hall.

Do we hyphen ordinal numbers written in letters?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:08 AM PDT

Knowing that we hyphen compound numbers under 100. Do we do the same for the ones used for ranks? Every website I've looked at teaches how to hyphen cardinal numbers (67, 82, 34,...) but does not say what to do with ordinal numbers (67th, 82nd, 34th,...).

As an alternative, I've tried to deduce a rule by looking up examples from Reverso, however what I've seen does not relate to what I look for.

So how should I hyphen these:

  • twenty(-)second

  • eighty(-)first

  • five(-)hundred(-)and(-)sixty(-)fith

I'm just guessing but, if the principle is the same as for cardinal numbers, then this is how I would hyphen them, though I could totally be wrong:

  • twenty-second --> Because the cardinal would be "twenty-two"

  • eighty-first --> Because the cardinal would be "eighty-one"

  • five hundred and sixty-fith --> Because the cardinal would be "five hundred and sixty-five".

If possible, could anyone provide me with a link to a website that covers this?

How should I hyphen decimal numbers written in letters (that contains the word "point" and "and")?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 06:24 AM PDT

All the wesites I've looked at says to hyphen numbers when you are describing compound numbers between 21 and 99 (except 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90). A compound number is any number that consists of two words; for example, eighty-eight, twenty-two, forty-nine. Numbers higher than 99 do not need a hyphen.

--> https://www.vappingo.com/word-blog/when-to-hyphenate-numbers/

But the problem is that none tells me what happens when we encounter decimal numbers.

How should I hyphen these numbers that contain "point" and "and"?

  • three(-)and(-)a(-)half.

  • three(-)point(-)five.

  • five(-)hundred(-)and(-)thirty(-)six(-)and a half.

  • five(-)hundred(-)and(-)thirty(-)six(-)point(-)five.

Can someone perhaps provide me a link that explains this?

Non-defining relative clauses: use 'who' or 'which'

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 07:32 AM PDT

We don't use 'that' in non-defining relative clauses, so we need to use 'which' if the pronoun refers to a thing, and 'who' if it refers to a person.

Is there any grammatical explanation why not to use 'that'?

Is it ok to place "better" like this?

Future in the past with the word "then" [closed]

What does "a paper of sandwiches" mean?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:14 AM PDT

I am quoting from the TV series "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" (episode 3, "The Naval Treaty"):

Should I use commas for this list or semi-colons?

I have the following list, and I am wondering whether I should use commas or semi-colons to separate the list items.

Which is correct - list 1 or list 2?

List 1:

I need a portion of chips, two peas, one fish and chips, three gravys, three chips and scraps, and a pepsi.

List 2:

I need a portion of chips; two peas; one fish and chips; three gravys; three chips and scraps; and a pepsi.

Idioms indicating symbiosis rather than conflict

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 08:04 AM PDT

In order to explain a situation in which it's better to compromise and set differences aside, I'm looking for an idiom.

In fact, I want to say, despite the huge and critical differences and problems (between two parties/things), it's better to select a symbiosis that helps both parties to take benefits of each others.

If it helps, the problem between them could not be settled in the early future and the context is technological.

Logical understanding of this sentence

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 01:04 AM PDT

I'm having trouble with the last sentence:

"My very first day wearing clipless pedals on a road bike I got run up on by a couple of big dogs. My instinct was to stop, as it disarms their chase instinct. Of course I fell over. The dogs looked at each other and trotted off. I guess they figured they couldn't do anything to me that I wasn't capable of doing to myself..."

Does it even make any sense?

Help me understand this phrase: growing base yield royalties over a long period

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 03:33 AM PDT

That phrase is the heading of a short section from The Invincible Company by Alex Osterwalder et al. (The book is about managing, updating and optimizing your business model and constantly reinventing your organization). I quote that section here in full to give you the context:

Growing Base Yield Royalties Over a Long Period

Licensing and royalty fees earn revenues over multiple years. In particular, the sales-dependent royalties constitute a sort of recurring revenue. License and royalty from new IP build on top of existing ones, creating a powerful long-term revenue engine.

Regarding the structure of the phrase, I think growing is an adjective and base yield royalties a noun phrase with royalties being the head. But then, I cannot understand what base yield is referring to and what it means. I searched it and did not find anything helpful or related to this subject (revenues made through intellectual property licensing and royalties). It is unlikely, but there may be typos in that phrase.

Is there a linguistic term that describes words that change pronunciation when combined together?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:24 AM PDT

Examples of this include Breakfast which is just 'break,' and 'fast.'

Of particular interest to me is helicopter, which is a combination of 'helico,' meaning spiral, and 'pter,' meaning wing.

This is of special interest because helico would be pronounced 'heh-lee-kou,' while 'pter' would be pronounced 'tehr,'with a silent p. However, combined become 'heh-lee-kohp-tehr' instead of 'heh-lee-kou-tehr.'

Or even just copter, where the 'co' isn't even a proper prefix.

I suppose this could broadly fall under a portmanteau but I wonder if there's something more specific.

Word order in a sentence using 'that' [closed]

Posted: 29 Jun 2022 11:41 PM PDT

Can I change the word order whatever way I want? They all appear to make sense but are they grammatically correct?

  1. It was so hot yesterday that I went swimming.
  2. Yesterday, it was so hot that I went swimming.
  3. It was so hot that I went swimming yesterday.

"now that a brace of more able-bodied men were coming home" [closed]

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 04:24 AM PDT

now that a brace of more able-bodied men were coming home.

Brace doesn't make sence in this sentence. Is it used as a metaphor? Brace means:

  1. a device fitted to something, in particular a weak or injured part of the body, to give support.

  2. make (a structure) stronger or firmer with wood, iron, or other forms of support.

I'm looking for the descriptive word of small group with a special language

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:15 AM PDT

This word refers to the special language a family or group of children would use to communicate with each other.

I thought it was sartorial, but that is about clothing choices or tailoring.

It was used to describe a large family's special language that others could not easily understand. For example in my family we used the word plogged up to describe a clogged or plugged drain and the like.

What do you call a person who tends to be assigned to a project when the project is struggling?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:52 AM PDT

In my company, there are a few people that are assigned to a project when the project needs to be "saved". It can be miscommunication with a customer, which needs quick resolution. It can be that we were executing on the wrong path. It can be that we need to go "back to the basics", re-think the goal and re-prioritize action items.

What do you call such a person?

I thought about "firefighter", but it's not quite the nuance I am looking for. The project is pan-pan, not mayday. Another analogy from the Ground Proximity Warning Systems, the project is "GLIDESLOPE" or "SINK RATE", but not "TERRAIN".

How to write from this, to that, to that, to that

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 10:36 AM PDT

For example, if I were writing the menu options for a restaurant, how would I write something like this?

Restaurant ABC offers many different dishes. From pizza, to burgers, to shakes, to fries, to hotdogs, to sodas, and more.

Is that the correct grammar? It seems like a lot of "to"'s.

"Either value can be higher"?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 06:04 AM PDT

I'm writing a math paper and want to say that two quantities, a*b and (a-b), cannot be ranked in a unique way. Depending on the values a and b, either can be higher.

My idea is to say "either value can be higher" or "either of the two values can be higher".

As a non-native speaker, I check my ideas with google - whether I get many hits when search for the exact sentences. Surprisingly, though both sentences above seem very normal to me, and it seems the point I'm trying to make ("either can be higher") should arise in many contexts, I get zero hits with both above sentences.

So, what's the succinct way of saying that "For some values a and b, a*b higher that (a-b), and for some values, the reverse inequality is true".

Thanks a lot!

English proverb or idiom for bad bargaining

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:02 AM PDT

I am looking for a proverb or idiom that indicates bad bargaining skills of a person. For e.g., a person might bargain for a kilo/pound vegetables, succeed but end up buying only a quarter kilo/pound. This would also indicate a foolish person.

Made in USA vs Made in the USA

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:52 AM PDT

Headline for a subsection that refers to a summary for the whole section

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:47 AM PDT

I am looking for a subsection headline that describes that the subsection will summarise all the information given in the subsections before (within the larger section).

For instance,

  1. Section title
    1.1. Subsection title A
    1.2. Subsection title B
    1.3. Subsection title C
    1.4. Headline needed <- summarises all information from 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3.

For chapters I would probably go for Chapter summary. However, I am not dealing with a chapter at the moment and the equivalent Section summary sounds rather strange to me.

In German we have the word Zwischenfazit which can be used for summaries on the level of chapters, sections or even subsections. I looked it up and the most often given suggestions on http://dict.leo.org/ is interim conclusion. However, this also sounds somehow strange to me.

I also found Recapitulation and conclusion as a possible headline.

So my question therefore is: What do you think about the suggestions given above? And if none of them sound right to you, do you know a term that I could use for my purpose?

Can I use quotation marks to suggest that somebody should say something?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:03 AM PDT

Simple question, can I use double quotes (") to suggest that somebody should say something?

For example, can I say:

You should say "Hello" to your neighbours

Is this grammatically correct?

“Everything is not…”

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:01 AM PDT

I keep hearing people say everything is not… which frustrating because it is ambiguous. It could mean either

Nothing is… (for the set of all things, no thing is…)

or

Not everything is… (for the set of all things, some things are not…/not all things are…)

I have been hearing it more and more in the past few years. In fact, when you Google the phrase everything is not, you get Selena Gomez's rendition of the Wizards of Waverly Place theme song which only further popularizes it with the youth.

Is this phrase grammatically correct/legitimate (ie, would an English teacher complain?), and if so, which is the correct meaning (if any)?

How to pronounce "tuple"?

Posted: 30 Jun 2022 10:12 AM PDT

A recent question has reminded me of something I've been wondering about for a while: what is the correct way to pronounce tuple?
