How to make a Shortcuts message automation to add number to a contact Posted: 30 Jun 2022 03:00 PM PDT I'd like to create a shortcuts automation on my phone to automatically add spam messages to a "Spam" contact. However, I can't get the shortcut to work. This is what I currently have This is for a "when I get a message containing text" automation. This pops up the automation whenever I get a message, but when I run it, it does nothing. |
My external keyboard (Sharkoon Skiller PRO) is not mapped properly for macOS Posted: 30 Jun 2022 04:27 PM PDT These are the following key swaps: - Q is mapped to X
- Caps Lock as Rewind
- Tab and Backspace as Backslash
The keyboard works well with no setup on Linux, Windows, and Android but it doesn't seem to like macOS much. I tried this method but no luck :( |
Automatically add incoming .ics calendar invites to my iCloud calendar Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:56 PM PDT Is there a way for Mail on my Mac to automatically add .ics calendar invites to my iCloud calendar? I am used to Outlook automatically showing calendar invites as tentative in my calendar, but with Apple tools I need to explicitly click on the .ics file to have it show up in my calendar. Embarrassingly, I've already missed a couple meetings because of this - and really want to see all my invites in my calendar automatically. I'm desperate for a solution and using 3rd party software or scripting is fine if it solves the problem! NOTE: there is a very old solution to the problem here, but the option no longer exists (I am using Mail version 15.0): Automating .ics import from Mail to iCal |
How to resize multiple photos (batch) in Apple Photos app on macOS Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:26 PM PDT Having 1 TB of photos and videos in Photos.app, one might want to resize some old photos or even videos so that the changes are perfectly updated in the Photos.app and the overall size of it decreases. We know that touching the originals within the package contents of .photoslibrary might result in corrupted library. I have tried resizing original photos with sips , convert or other programs in bash, and the changes are visible on Photos app. However the metadata is not updated (original is 4000x2000, resized is 640x480 and photos app still shows 4000x2000 while the photo is 640x480). There are a lot of apps that interact with Photos.app like Photo Sweeper, Power Photos, etc. However I couldn't find any that allows to batch resize. Couldn't find a way to do that with Automator or applescript although there are scripts interacting with the Photos app. Seems a very common use case but I couldn't find any answer on the web. |
Reverse scrolling per individual mouse Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:53 AM PDT I know this is a thing for mouse and trackpad and I know the application "Scroll Reverser". What I'm looking for is an app that let me set the scroll direction per individual mouse. I want my magic mouse to be in the other direction like a mouse with a physical scroll wheel. I only use the second mouse with the physical scroll wheel for blender and would like it to be reversed. Just got used to it with the Magic Mouse because it's intuitive like on the trackpad, but the second I have a scroll wheel in my hand this feels wrong. Any suggestions? Slightly off topic for the title, but an app that would let me set scroll direction per app would also work for me. |
Mac won't even TRY a password Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:45 AM PDT I don't mean it won't accept my password, I mean it won't even try it. First thing that happened: I came back to my computer and typed a password, and it disabled the password field like it does when you type it wrong (I probably did), but it stayed that way for minutes. "Cancel" and "Switch User" options were ignored. Eventually I gave up and unplugged the machine and closed the lid, to see if the suspend/resume might change anything. Now the password field is active, I can type in it, but it's not doing anything - if I typed something wrong, there should be a delay before I can try again. Or there should be a delay if I type the correct password. Nothing. I can always type in the password field immediately. The "Cancel" and "Switch User" options are also ignored. Yes, I can probably just reboot, but I was in the middle of some things. Any ideas? Edit: If I close the lid and re-open, the password field is cleared. "Cancel" does not work, even before password entry, so clearly something is not functioning. |
Sync iBooks highlights, bookmarks, etc., without uploading epubs to iCloud Drive Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:22 AM PDT In the past, it was possible to sync (i)Books bookmarks, highlights, etc., through the cloud, without turning on iCloud Drive for the Books app, or uploading personal epubs (not purchased from Apple) to iCloud Drive. Has this been removed from iOS? Using iOS 9.3.6 for example, it was possible to do this by turning on Settings > iBooks > Sync Bookmarks and Notes, and Sync Collections, while having Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive > iBooks turned off. Books were not uploaded to iCloud Drive. The highlights etc. were synced using the Apple ID used for iTunes/AppStore/iBooks purchases, which is not necessarily the same as the Apple ID used for iCloud. Books could be synced from the Mac with a cable, with Books disabled in iCloud Drive. The Mac's Books Preferences > General > Sync: "Sync collections, bookmarks and highlights" is checked, and highlights and bookmarks were synced through the cloud, in real time. I got a new device with iOS 15, and there is only Settings > Books > iCloud Drive, and Reading Now. Below this, it says "To enable syncing across devices, sign in to iCloud and turn on iCloud Drive in Settings". I haven't done that, but I think it will trigger the books that I synced with a cable from the Mac, to be uploaded to iCloud Drive, which I don't want. But I can't see how to get the highlights and bookmarks to sync without that - none of the books on the new device have their bookmarks. |
Mac OS JBOD Array - incorrect total size Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:54 PM PDT I've got a Mac Mini with a bunch of external hard drives configured as a single JBOD array. I recently got a new drive and tried to expand the array by clicking the "+" in the lower portion of the disk utility screen. I got an error that the addition was unsuccessful. However, now I see two things that are strange. First, the drive shows up in the RAID set anyway. Second, the overall size of the array didn't change - it's still the same as it was before I added the disk. More info - it's an APFS array. It created it in a little different way than I was used to in the past - it shows up as a RAID set (unmounted) that has an APFS Container disk. That container disk has an APFS volume that is mounted. Interestingly, the unmounted RAID set shows the correct overall size, while the mounted child APFS volume shows the incorrect size. Both show the new drive as a member of the pool. I tried unmounting it, running first aid on the whole array, restarting my computer, and deleting that specific drive from the array but nothing works. I'd love any pointers or ideas for what to try next. Thank you! Update - a new run of first aid gave me the following error message: warning: bitmap store: reached limit of 23040 B-tree nodes |
Running MacBook Pro M1 16" on less than 140 watt charger Posted: 30 Jun 2022 02:36 PM PDT The MacBook Pro M1 16" comes with a 140 watt charger, with MagSafe plug. I vaguely recall that such a charger provides rapid charging, but so many watts are not required. I recall that this MacBook Pro can run, without fast charging, on just under 100 watts (98 or 96 W?) with a charger plugged into a Thunderbolt port rather than MagSafe. This lower watt usage is important, because if the MacBook Pro 16" tolerates under 100 watts, it can be powered from Thunderbolt dock rather than the bundled charger. Unfortunately, I cannot find any documentation to this point. The Apple specifications page provides no such details. Can anyone confirm my recollection, and provide details or documentation? |
How can I listen for when a disk image is ejected on OS X? Posted: 30 Jun 2022 10:26 AM PDT I am looking for a way to determine whether or not a volume was recently ejected on OS X. Specifically when a DMG volume is unmounted/ejected but I don't understand enough about the system to know whether or not the solution for that is different from a disk drive image. It does not need to be instantaneous, but I don't think a cron job which checks the number of mounted volumes every X minutes would be useful because a volume could be mounted and unmounted in between runs. |
Shortcut / Siri Command for iPad as second monitor Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:48 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro. To turn on the iPad as a second monitor, I have to go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays > Add Display (dropdown) > Select iPad Is there a way to ask Siri to do this with a single command or another way to make a shortcut? |
Modifiers key does not work Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:48 PM PDT This is something that is starting to get in my nerves. Basically I am mapping the Command key to Control key, it is being stressful for me to try the typical combinations (Copy/Cut/Paste) with Command. This menu in settings looks pretty straightforward to change this behaviour but it does not work at all. Would I need to set up another configuration? macOS Monterey Version 12.4 |
Connecting Bluetooth headset to MacBook Pro, won't last more than a second Posted: 30 Jun 2022 10:05 AM PDT I'm trying to connect my bluetooth headset to a MacBook Pro (my work laptop). (It's an Anko/Kmart neckband with earphones and mic, which is working perfectly with all other Windows/Android devices). On my Mac, I can see the headset in System Preferences > Bluetooth. When I hit Connect: - "Not Connected" changes to "Connected", while I hear the "connected sound" in my headset,
- immediately followed by "disconnected sound", while the "Connected" changes back to "Not Connected"
It won't stay connected for more than a second, often less than a second. Any idea how to fix this? |
Is Apple known to blacklist developers for conduct that takes place outside of official distribution channels? Posted: 30 Jun 2022 02:17 PM PDT Let's say I develop an app and sell it in the App Store. I make sure the app complies with all of Apple's policies. But outside the App Store, it's clear from social media that I'm in favor of jailbreaking. Maybe I develop apps that wouldn't be allowed in the App Store and distribute them over unofficial channels. Or maybe I have another version of the same app that doesn't adhere to Apple's policies, which I distribute outside the App Store. If Apple finds out about that, would that likely be a problem in practice, assuming I don't promote any of that stuff within my app or its App Store listing? |
My MacBook fails to login, and I suspect it's because of FileVault decryption Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:57 AM PDT When I try to log-in to my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running macOS Monterey, the log-in progress bar reaches the middle before suddenly restarting, saying that the computer's experienced a problem. I am currently in the middle of FileVault decryption. There have been a few times where I've been able to successfully log-in, and I've attached the description of the problem that appears. The only times that I've been able to successfully log-in were when the power adapter is not attached to the computer, however there have been times where, even though the computer isn't attached to the power adapter, I still am unable to login to the computer. In the cases where I am able to login, attaching the power adapter to the computer immediately results in the computer freezing and then restarting. How can I generate a spreadsheet of a folder structure on my computer with folder sizes included? Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:02 PM PDT I'd like to make a spreadsheet of a folder structure in my filesystem. Given a parent folder or volume as the input, the output should include: - Subfolders to the nth level (user-specified)
- A clean/readable visual format showing the folder names and their hierarchy (perhaps each next level in the path breaks out to a new column)
- The total size of each folder in GB
You can't copy and paste more than the names of files directly from Finder, so I understand Terminal / zsh would be the way to achieve this. What command line code would output this result? What I've tried: Changing directory to the desired folder in Terminal and running du -k -d 3 gets me somewhat close (-k meaning kilobytes and -d 3 meaning depth of 3). But it's quite an unruly list that is tedious to translate into a spreadsheet format. I'd still prefer to export a .csv from that, generate GB to the second decimal place instead of KB, and perhaps have each level in the path name break out into a new column of the .csv. |
Normal for external SanDisk SSD 2T taking over 2 minutes to access files? Use not to Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:27 AM PDT So I have a MBP 16" 2019 on Monterey 12.13.1 and using Sandisk external SSD drive partitioned Mac OS journaled and Windows ExFAT. Up to now when mounting the drive all loaded pretty quickly, matter of seconds. I last used the drive 4 days ago for a time machine backup. When I plugged it in today to move some emails to it, the drive and both partitions showed in finder in about 3 seconds, but when I went to access the Mac partition it took over 2 minutes to load. I then ejected the drive and remounted - same - over 2 minutes to load the Mac part. How can I tell why the access time has changed to be over 2 minutes? Also I did First Aid on the Mac partition which took 10 minutes to complete. Here are the results: Here is the drive info: The only other odd behavior I notice is that before today when ejecting the drive I would pick one partition and eject it then answer "Yes" to eject all drives question. Today, I no longer get that question every time when ejecting. Here is some more info: I also tried this, "wmmbp@MacBook-Pro ~ % sudo fs_usage |grep SanDisk Mac grep: Mac: No such file or directory" But it did not work..... |

How can I see ALL global shortcuts currently active across Finder + other apps? Posted: 30 Jun 2022 03:03 PM PDT I've just started using Amethyst and would love to be able to use the CTRL+optn+NumPad[0-9] shortcuts, but some of these just don't work and I'm assuming something else already has these shortcuts that are overriding Amethyst's. I've looked in SysPrefs/Keyboard Shortcuts, as well as some of the other apps like Alfred and Keyboard Maestro, but there's nothing with those matching key combinations. Is there a way to globally retrieve ALL possible keyboard shortcuts that are currently active across the system? |
Macbook Air 2017 Black Dots On Screen Posted: 30 Jun 2022 04:02 PM PDT Recently I observed some black dots on the bottom of the screen on my MacBook Air 2017. They appeared suddenly. 16GB M1 Mac running slow after couple days of usage Posted: 30 Jun 2022 11:03 AM PDT After a fresh restart, everything is smooth. During the next couple of days of regular usage of the system, a problem of responsiveness gradually increases, until you can count a full second between you swiping a desktop and the system actually responding to the gesture. I've tried reducing memory pressure by closing high memory apps, but it doesn't help at all. Video demonstration here. |
How do you disable Command + Tab (App switcher) in Monterey so that window switcher shortcuts from other applications can replace it? Posted: 30 Jun 2022 01:04 PM PDT I'm trying out Raycast app without any prior experience of its kind such as Alfred. To my astonishment, it has a built-in Switch Windows functionality which I can assign a hotkey. I am trying to replace the hotkey for Mac OS' App Switcher with that of Raycast's Window Switcher(CMD+Tab). However, it seems (CMD+Tab) is not an overridable shortcut. I seriously hate how app switcher works and would love to adopt a more reasonable window switcher without additional applications. Any help will be greatly appreciated. |
Can't find AirPlay on macOS High Sierra Posted: 30 Jun 2022 02:03 PM PDT I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro with macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 installed. I have just found out that my Smart LG TV with webOS has AirPlay incorporated so, I would like to mirror my MacBook Pro screen on my TV. However I can't find AirPlay on my MacBook. Already searched for some solutions on Google but the only option that I found was to go to Screen Settings on System Preferences and turn on "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" which it is. However the AirPlay icon doesn't appear in the Menu Bar. Does anyone know how to solve this? Is my MacBook too old to support AirPlay? |
Bluetooth lagging on Macbook Pro 16 inch 2019 Posted: 30 Jun 2022 01:53 PM PDT I have a Magic Mouse connected to my new Macbook Pro 2019. The mouse is horribly lagging. I have another bluetooth device, a pair of Sony headphones, that is working horribly too. Analysis: - Both devices work perfectly with Macbook Pro 2018 in the very same location.
- I suspected interference with the Wifi(2.4 GHz) but when I turned it off the devices were still lagging
- Both devices are 100% charged
- The mouse's sensor is clean
I tried to reset PRAM and SMC, removed everything related to mouse from /Library/Preferences/ , nothing helps. BT signal strength on both Macbooks is the same: ~ -52 dBm. I'd appreciate any help! macOS version: Catalina 10.15.5 |
My Mac crashes and shuts down when charger is unplugged, not immediately Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:03 PM PDT Hey so my Macbook Pro (Retina 15" 2014 i7 2.6GHz, High Sierra (institute doesn't allow me to update)) is turning itself off randomly, and as far as I've figured out this will only occur when the power is unplugged. At first I found it being more common when my laptop was feeling quite hot, and perhaps even my laptop seems to start overheating when I unplug it? This is very possibly not the case though, I'm trying to find a pattern where there might not be one. I reset the SMC and did all the other stuff listed on the apple website of "what to do if your mac keeps shutting off". The screen seems to go off with a backlight still on for some time, and then either it gets stuck and I have to hold down power to shut it down, or it fully shuts down itself. This can occur after 3 hours of no problems using battery, or it can happen within 5 mins and then every 5 mins thereafter for the next 30-45 mins. I have no sudo privileges fwiw, if there's no solution I can do myself, I'll take it to my institute whose laptop it is, but given current situation I'm trying to avoid making that journey. Thanks! |
How do I access files downloaded through Telegram? Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:24 PM PDT I Googled it, but haven't found anything. Basically I've downloaded a couple of files through Telegram. I can see them in Telegram settings- storage usage. But how do I get access to them and transfer them to iCloud Drive? |
How can I disable iMessage suggestions in iOS 13’s share menu? Posted: 30 Jun 2022 05:01 PM PDT In iOS 13, when I try to share something, the first row is all suggestions about who I should text whatever I'm reading to. How can I disable this "feature" so that it stops taking up space in the share menu? |
Start a video at a specific time using terminal Posted: 30 Jun 2022 03:04 PM PDT I want to be able to start a video, 30 seconds in, using the terminal. I'd prefer to use IINA because it's awesome, but VLC would work as well. |
The volume can't be ejected because it's currently in use Posted: 30 Jun 2022 12:56 PM PDT After working with an external USB backup disk I want to cleanly unmount the drive. When pressing the 'eject' button Finder warns me with the message: - "The volume can't be ejected because it's currently in use."
or - "The disk "Diskname" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it.".
or when trying to use the Terminal: umount /Volumes/Diskname - "umount(/Volumes/Diskname): Resource busy -- try 'diskutil unmount'"
As far as I am aware, I am not using this disk but Finder says I do, so I must be wrong. I prefer a clean unmount of the drive. As I am in the middle of doing multiple tasks, logging out and logging in is not preferred as is the installation of third party software. Terminal command lsof might be of use here, but personally I think this is too complex for such a 'simple' problem and to be honest, I do not know how to use it properly. My question: How do I know what program is using my drive so I can properly quit that program and eject my drive? |
Good resources for those transitioning to Mac OS X from Windows Posted: 30 Jun 2022 10:35 AM PDT I'm going to be getting a new MacBook laptop as part of the PhD programme I've just started, but have never used Macs before in my life. I'm quite an advanced computer user (running an informal computer repair business for Windows PCs), but I can see that I might just get frustrated with it at first as I don't know some of the standard OS X ways of doing things. Does anyone have suggestions for resources that could teach me these standard ways of doing things, or any other guides to someone transitioning from Windows? |
