Slow start-up and right click on link lag in Safari

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:50 AM PST

Earlier today I had an issue with an extension not showing up in Safari. In a desperate attempt, I ran the following command:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Immediately after that command ran, Safari became unresponsive. In particular, I am facing the following issues:

  • The start-up time is very large (i.e., 35 seconds or more)
  • The beachball appears when right-clicking a link on a webpage. Then, it takes roughly three seconds for the context menu to appear.

It is clear to me that lsregister did something, and my question is what exactly did it do and how can I reverse it? I am running macOS Monterey 12.2.

Tried flashlight solution but it won't work for recent Mac OS Versions.

Identifying location of used time machine file

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:38 AM PST

Running timeutil status provides me with the following details on the current TimeMachine activity:

Backup session status:

{      BackupPhase = Copying;      ClientID = "com.apple.backupd";      DateOfStateChange = "2022-02-04 16:34:41 +0000";      DestinationID = "B9XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX";      DestinationMountPoint = "/Volumes/Time Machine Backups";      EventFractionOfTotalProgressBar = "0.1";      Progress =     {          Percent = "0.4345236771612808";          TimeRemaining = "746.5909203181016";          "_raw_Percent" = "0.4345236771612808";          "_raw_totalBytes" = 601310056448;          bytes = 255471616;          files = 481;          sizingFreePreflight = 1;          totalBytes = 601310056448;          totalFiles = 4300546;      };      Running = 1;      Stopping = 0;  }

What I'm missing here is the name of the file that is used for the backup. With multiple files sparesbundle file being available in the destination, how can I get the name of the spares bundle file that the Time Machine is using?

Disable group chat notifications with Focus mode, even from allowed people

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:26 AM PST

iOS 15 has a Focus feature that lets you disable all notifications except for a list of specific people. I've added one person to it.

Unfortunately, when this persons sends a message to a group chat or even uses the quick "like"/"haha" responses in the group chat, these notifications get through the Focus mode.

Is there a way to use Focus to allow notifications from specific people, only if they call/message me directly? In other words: use Focus mode to mute notifications from group chats where there are participants not in the list of allowed notifications.

Mac Partition Error (Cannot add new Partition / Bootcamp partition not showing / Spaces don't add up to disk)

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:18 AM PST

So I am trying to add more space to Bootcamp by following this tutorial. But the first red flag came when I went into the partition menu: It doesn't show the partition for Bootcamp. Then I saw that the "free space" part and the "Macintosh HD" doesn't add up to 1TB, in fact, it is more, and I 100% know for sure that this iMac model that I bought in 2019 is only 1TB. (shown in image)

I decided to add a new partition and set it at 200GB and run it, but then it gave me this error (can't copy paste so the image below) enter image description here

So I decided to do some googling but didn't see anyone has anything close to this.

I ran diskutil list and got this back:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk0 1: EFI ⁨EFI⁩ 209.7 MB disk0s1 2: Apple_APFS ⁨Container disk2⁩ 870.0 GB disk0s2 3: Microsoft Basic Data ⁨BOOTCAMP⁩ 130.0 GB disk0s3 /dev/disk1 (internal, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *28.0 GB disk1 1: EFI ⁨EFI⁩ 314.6 MB disk1s1 2: Apple_APFS ⁨Container disk2⁩ 27.7 GB disk1s2 /dev/disk2 (synthesized): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: APFS Container Scheme - +897.7 GB disk2 Physical Stores disk1s2, disk0s2 1: APFS Volume ⁨Macintosh HD - Data⁩ 546.7 GB disk2s1 2: APFS Volume ⁨Macintosh HD⁩ 14.9 GB disk2s2 3: APFS Snapshot ⁨com.apple.os.update-...⁩ 14.9 GB disk2s2s1 4: APFS Volume ⁨Preboot⁩ 285.5 MB disk2s3 5: APFS Volume ⁨Recovery⁩ 652.6 MB disk2s4 6: APFS Volume ⁨VM⁩ 3.2 GB disk2s5 /dev/disk3 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: FDisk_partition_scheme *250.0 GB disk3 1: Windows_FAT_32 ⁨KIMI'S USB⁩ 250.0 GB disk3s1

What should I do so that I can partition space from my free space that is in the Macintosh HD drive?

One note is that when I was initially installing Bootcamp, I did force quit bootcamp helper and deleted that partition because it was taking too long, and I reran it afterwards, so that might be the root of the problem

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Will a Magic Trackpad 2 work on a USB switch on a Mac and a Windows laptop?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:26 AM PST

I've got a Windows laptop that's my day-job machine, and a Mac Mini which is my personal machine. Right now I've got a mouse with a USB receiver plugged into a USB switch, to switch between the two.

With a Magic Trackpad 2, would this setup still work? I'd be fine with either a bluetooth receiver, or wired permanently to the switch if necessary.

My understanding is the Magic Trackpad can connect to Windows and do all of its cool precision stuff, possibly with either an app found on GitHub or a paid service. Would that still work with the trackpad switching back and forth all the time between machines, or could that cause a problem?

Copying a folder from a Mac to an external hard drive using Terracopy: if you delete the source file does the destination file get deleted too?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 09:11 AM PST

When copying a folder from a Mac to a backup external hard drive using Terracopy? If you delete the source file or folder does the destination get deleted too? This happens using Carbon Copy Cloner App.

I want to copy pictures from my Mac to an external hard drive. When I am out of space on my Mac, I want to delete some older picture folders/files on my Mac, but I still want the pictures to reside on the backup external drive. I will like the backup to be scheduled everyday.

Will Terracopy accomplish this for me or is there a better method or app?

Why won't iPhone charge?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 06:03 AM PST

I have an iPhone 13 Pro, it is running iOS 15.4. It will only charge when it's dead, and even then it charges really slowly. It only will charge to 1% and then stops charging. I have tried restarting the phone,2 wireless chargers, 3 lightning cables and no luck.

Allow menubar apps to cross the macbook notch

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:19 AM PST

I have lots of menubar apps. In my previous macbook, that wasn't a problem. I can run some app without any menus (like python apps) and see all of the menubar apps. However, the macbook I purchased has a notch and macOS won't allow the menubar apps to overflow to the left of the notch. How can I change this behavior such that menubar apps can extend to the left of the notch(, until it reaches the menus of the current app, like it was the case for all older macbooks)?

Migrate google chrome profile

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:15 AM PST

I bought a new mac and would like to transfer most of my settings, preferences, and files to the new mac. In my experience using the same hard drive (macOS system) with different laptops, Google Chrome seems to record the specific information of the mac it's originally on, and resets most settings when it detects that it is on a different mac. I would like to override this behavior and tell Chrome to ignore its environment and continue to work the way it used to. How can I do this?

I read something similar here, but it seems like it is Windows only. Maybe there is a macOS equivalent?

PlayStation 5 Controller differences USB and Bluetooth

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 04:32 AM PST

I have a PlayStation 5 Controller to play some games on my MacBook.

Now the strange thing is, that if I connect it via USB I can use the controller for my game perfectly fine.

There is also some feedback if I'm outside the game (if I press a Button, something happens.)

If I connect it via Bluetooth, the controller is useless.

No feedback on Desktop and Game.

Does anyone know a solution to this?

Is it possible to record video on an iPhone 13 mini and have sound coming from an external audio interface?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 02:59 AM PST

I would like to record videos of myself playing musical instruments and have the sound being fed via my USB-C audio interface (MOTU Ultralite MK5).

I have tried answer given in another post but this doesn't work on an iPhone 13 mini.

open new windows in maximise size by default (not fullscreen) [closed]

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 04:22 AM PST

I want every new window/app to open and cover the entire screen (NOT full mode).

is that possible?

some apps remember their window size when you close them, but not all of them (i.e. vscode)

I searched around this. community, reddit, and google, and all answers refer to full screen, which is not what I want.

How to get "Open with Google Docs" option in mobile browser

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:49 AM PST

i need to share some Google Docs i created with some people who have a variety of devices they use. i'd like to send them a link to the shared documents. problem is, at least on iPhone & iPad (i don't have any android devices to test with), when they click the link in an email, it launches Safari. i AM getting the popup to get the Google Docs app. but after i download it & sign in, i can't find a way to get the shared document to open in the Google Docs app!

now, on my iPhone, i do get the bar at the top that comes down with an "Open in app" button. but nothing like that on the iPad. and i have no idea about android.

also of note: i did create some Firebase Dynamic short links for these docs. i thought perhaps those would do the work of getting the user to open the documents in the app from the browser, but i don't think that's making any difference.

so, is there anything i can do to make this EASILY happen for people who aren't very technically minded?

are there some steps/instructions on how to get a gDocs link in Safari to open in the gDocs app???

i've looked thru the "Shared" options but gDocs is not an option there. and you can't copy/paste the link directly into the gDocs app (as far as i can find).

thanks for any help/insight.

Is there a way to identify which windows/apps are open on which monitor?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 06:48 AM PST

I have a Macbook with 2 external monitors attached and my Mission Control setup for Displays to have separate spaces.

enter image description here

Having recently switched over from Windows 10, one thing I miss significantly is the ability to quickly identify at a glance which app/window is present on which monitor. In Windows 10, I can configure the taskbar such that it shows only the windows that are present on the given screen. This allows me to quickly identify which app is open where.

I've been looking for a tool or a configuration in MacOS 12+ that allows me to do the same, but I can't seem to find anything.

Is there a setting that I haven't been able to find or a utility that I can add to present this information? With the Dock only visible on a single monitor at a time, I would be happy to have some other visual indicator to allow me to quickly find my window.

MacBook Air update to Big Sur broke my Spotlight search

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 09:54 AM PST

I have been experiencing multiple issues since upgrading to Big Sur.

  • My zsh terminal takes upto 30s to open (never happened before)
  • My Firefox tabs crash when I wake my Mac from sleep
  • Spotlight search is broken (can't search for Apps, docs, anything)

I have tried re-indexing from the Preferences (add whole drive to Spotlight privacy, remove it again). I also re-indexed it from the terminal using:

sudo mdutil -E /

and

sudo mdutil -i on /

Both these options bring Spotlight back to life temporarily. However, as soon as I restart my machine, I have to do this all over again!

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?

MacBook details:

  • MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014)
  • OS: macOS Big Sur Version 11.6.2
  • Processor: 1.4 GHz Dual-Core i5
  • RAM: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I have been installed iTerm2 and brew. In the process, I have some problems with my terminal. It doesn't show anything whatever I command it. That's all I can do is /bin/bash to return to bash. There also appear -tail in front of the zsh. How to change the zsh back to normal?

Could sb give a have a hand with this? I just want to beautify my terminal. Greatly appreciate.

Change default shortcut on MacBook Pro 2021 [closed]

Those shortcuts I don't use them and I wondering if possible to switch them to do something else like launchpad, keyboard brightness, etc ... I've already check the keyboard settings but I couldn't find anything there.

I'm running macOS Monterey 12.2

How can I make a column reference a row in another table?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 03:06 AM PST

I have this table that was created by using the "Form sheet" on iPad

Table A ------------------------------------- Month | Rent | Groceries | Netflix | January | 100 | 100 | 100 | February| 200 | 200 | 200 | -------------------------------------

Naturally, it's weird that the months are the columns, and not the rows. So I want to create a 2nd table that references this table, but transposed

Table B --------------------------------- Description | January | February | Rent | 100 | 200 | Groceries | 100 | 200 |

I can make the Cell reference the other table, but when I click+drag to autocomplete the remaining cells (around 20), they follow the column.

Table B January Groceries points to Table A February Rent.

Of course I could do it manually but it'll take me a few hours, and I'll have to manually update each table if I insert a new column on Table A

Does certain Fn key like F11 does not work for services which are linked to automator?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:15 AM PST

So I did a small automator to toggle wifi on/off. I put that in services so I can assign a shortcut in keyboard in system preference.

I can assign F12, F10 all seems good but when I assign F11, when I press F11 it does not do anything but give me a error sound... However assign F11 to other non-service like mission control totally works...

I'm using Apple Wireless Keyboard (latest) with my Macbook pro on Catalina

Is F11 special for certain programs or blocked for assignment?

How to retrieve a shopping list out of Face-Id?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 09:05 AM PST

So I write down what I'm going to buy before going to buy grocery.

Whether I am masked or need to enter my PIN, it's a pain to retrieve the list several times during a shopping trip. I usually use Notes for this list since it enables syncing from macOS.

I can of course disable an iPhone's PIN and Face-Id before entering the store and reenable afterwards, but this is far from a good solution.

How else might I prepare my iPhone to be able to pick it up, press the power button, and see a grocery list (while masked and without entering my PIN)?

How can I find what swcdn is trying to download?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:06 AM PST

I have two mac computers. One of them is constantly downloading from swcdn.apple.com, the other does not. My guess is that swcdn stands for SoftWare Content Delivery Network. I have a limited internet connection and swcdn.apple.com is often consuming my connection preventing other work. Using Little Snitch, I can see nsurlsessiond is making connections to mesu.apple.com and swcdn.apple.com. I have disabled automatic software updates.

How can I find what my computer is downloading or streaming from swcdn.apple.com?

Drawing a time chart in Numbers 11

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:02 AM PST

I am trying to use numbers to plot a chart of my electricity consumption. I have a table that looks like:

date consumption
01/01/2021 10
15/01/2021 110
17/01/2021 140
10/02/2021 180

As you can see the measurements are not taken at regular intervals (I am nerd but not to that extent). If I try to generate a graph selecting this table I would have something like this: Graph 1

As you can see the X axis is regularly spaced: the 4 points are equally distant and one could infer that the consumption is simply linear.

By adding in column A all the possible days of the year and in column be the corresponding value, I have this result: Graph 2

From this graph I can detect that there is an acceleration of consumption between the 15th and 17th of January. In other words, the second graph is drawing each point in the right moment in time.

Is there an option to do this automatically without having to add every single day of the year (or hours, in other use cases) to a column?

Thanks!

How can I troubleshoot or fix when macOS Photos app import from a connected iPhone gets stuck on "Preparing to import from..."?

How can I troubleshoot or fix when macOS Photos app import from a connected iPhone gets stuck on "Preparing to import from..."?

Devices:

  • iMac Retina 5K 27-inch 2017, macOS Big Sur 11.2.3
  • iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14.4.1

Setup: iPhone is connected to the iMac with a USB-Lightning Cable

Problem:

Photos app on MacOS import from connected iPhone appears to be stuck on "Preparing to import from" and never makes progress.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Launch Photos
  2. Unlock iPhone
  3. Connect iPhone to iMac with cable
  4. Click the name of the connected iPhone under "Devices" section of Photos
  5. Photos shows a message: Preparing to import from "Device_Name" where Device_Name is the name of the iPhone
  6. Wait... forever...

Additional Information:

  • Imports previously used to work between these devices.
  • The Photos Library has been repaired multiple times by opening Photos while holding Option-Command.
  • The iPhone successfully synchronizes and backs up via the Finder when connected.
  • Swapping out cables does not change the behavior.
  • Restarting the iMac, iPhone, or macOS Photos app does not solve the problem.
  • iPhone has over 40,000 items (photos, live photos, videos, etc.) and a few hundred are new items since the last import while the others are already imported.

macOS Big Sur Startup Error - "Backup and Restore has Encountered a Fatal Error"

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 06:01 AM PST

I have been getting this error message constantly upon startup:

enter image description here

From some quick research, I found out that this might be related to permission issues for Google directory in Application Support. So I went in and typed the following:

 sudo chmod -R 755 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Google

Upon restart, it still creeped in. I am not sure what this problem is anymore. Could anyone help me?

Activity Monitor columns missing

My Activity Monitor does not have any columns that show more details about each process.

I've already ensured that under "View" in the menu bar, the relevant columns are enabled.

Can't sign in to the Mac App Store

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 09:10 AM PST

I am trying to update to El Capitan. I am being asked for my Apple ID and password. I entered both correctly however I am being asked to enter a verification code after the password (see screenshot). This makes no sense, it's absurd, and very unlike Apple. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Note: I updated the password using the 2-step verification process, but the new password still does not work.

How can I prevent Homebrew from installing a duplicate of software I installed through other means?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 09:36 AM PST

I like using Homebrew for installing Unix software on my Mac, and appreciate that it doesn't try to install multiple copies of things like Python. There are some packages I've already installed manually, though, and I don't want Homebrew to install its own copies of them.

In my current situation, I installed OCaml using the standard installer. Now I want to install Coq via Homebrew. I see via brew deps coq that it depends on OCaml. I know I can tell it to skip installing OCaml this time via brew install --ignore-dependencies coq. However, I'd rather not have to do that every time I install a Homebrew package that requires OCaml.

How can I make Homebrew pretend that it installed software that I installed through other means, so that it doesn't try to install a duplicate copy?

Can home and end keys be mapped when using Terminal?

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:52 AM PST

The Home and End keys on a MacBook Pro can be emulated with Fn + or fFn + . Or when certain settings are changed, with the ⌘ Command key instead of Fn.

None of these works in Terminal.

As I frequently need to go to the beginning or end of the line and would also like to jump forwards or backwards by word.

How can I jump around on a line in Terminal?
