Limit internet access for an app for an specific network Posted: 21 Nov 2021 02:09 AM PST Thanks for reading. The perfect example for what I what is: Can I deny access to internet to Transmission (or downloading solutions) if the mac is connected to a mobile network (defined by name) or allowed if it is connected to a home network? Much appreciated. |
Escape button, Siri and possibly other features stop working after waking 2021 Macbook Pro Posted: 21 Nov 2021 02:08 AM PST This does not happen every time my Macbook goes to sleep, but sometimes, I find that the escape button and Siri have stopped functioning after waking up. It goes back to normal after restarting. Is there a way to get them back to normal without restarting the computer? |
Unable to stop and start playing music or soundtrack at the exact same place Posted: 21 Nov 2021 12:08 AM PST I don't know if this is a new problem as I don't use itunes mostly. But today when I tried to play music on Itunes (my own music saved on my local driver, not music downloaded or streamed from itunes store), I found that when I clicked stop button to stop playing and then play again, it won't start at the same place. The starting position is a few minutes before the position where I stopped the music/sound. This doesn't happen when I am using VLC to play sound. Spec:mid-2014 Macbook Pro, macOS BigSur |
Mac getting stuck during update Posted: 20 Nov 2021 11:56 PM PST So I'm updating the new macOS Monterey, but what's happening is the bar is freezing at the end of the update. I have waited multiple hours and left it overnight, but in the end, the bar is just frozen; it isn't moving an inch. So what I did is, I went to recovery mode, and went to macOS utilities, and reinstalled macOS Monterey, and selected that it should install on my Macintosh HD disk (where all my data is on), but however, even after this, it is still just freezing at the end of the bar, at around 95%. I reset the NVRAM and the SMC as well, but nothing is working. Previously, I booted it up on safe mode by holding shift, and it worked, but those were for shut downs. This is a reinstallation and I tried booting it up on safe mode, but it isn't working, it's still just freezing at the end of the update. And also, if I reinstall macOS Monterey, will all of my data and files and applications still be there? Because that Macintosh HD startup disk does contain all my data. Anyways, any clue on what's going on? Thanks for the help! |
Error while installing PostgreSQL 12.9 on Apple Silicon (M1 Max) via asdf Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:55 PM PST I'm trying to install PostgreSQL via Please note that I'm trying to install it against OpenSSL 1.1 (which is installed via Homebrew already). Also, I'm exported I believe Postgres is already supported on Apple Silicon, am I missing something here? |
dsconfigad gives back node name wasn't found (2000) even though time is synced Posted: 21 Nov 2021 12:57 AM PST I'v Been trying to add a Mac to our domain and for some reason it gives back the error "node name wasn't found (2000)" I have checked and saw that it relates to an incorrect time and it needs that I set the clock correctly, things is its already set correctly. our domain syncs up to time.windows.com. and the Mac syncs to that as well, I tried pointing to our AD that's hosting our NTP(which syncs to Microsoft time) and I keep getting the error, am I missing something? |
Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:31 PM PST I owned a MacBook Pro with an Apple-certified SSD. I erased my entire disk (using the erase option in disk utility) with TRIM disabled, then reinstalled the Mac OS and enabled it as soon as when I got into the system. Since my TRIM was disabled when I erased my data, I assume it didn't get trimmed that time and was still in the disk physically (assume the time was very short and the GC hadn't started either, and the data could still be recovered). Would my data be trimmed immediately when I enabled TRIM? Or my data wouldn't be trimmed because it was erased before the trim was enabled? Besides that, will reinstalling the system change the TRIM setting (Like every time a system is reinstalled, the TRIM is set to enabled by default)? Can my data still be recovered after all the process? In terms of my case, could anyone explain what would happen in detail? |

How to disable scroll acceleration in macOS Monterey Posted: 20 Nov 2021 05:37 PM PST After updated to MacOS 12.0 (Monterey), the annoying scrolling acceleration is back. And I can't scroll down with my Logitech Master MX1/MX2/Vertical. I tried these solutions: And none of these works.(all from question: How to disable scroll acceleration in macOS Sierra?) I think it's a very basic setting and I don't want to pay for it. Is there anything I can do? Thanks. |
M1 Mac running .NET-Core WebAPI using Windows AD Posted: 20 Nov 2021 05:33 PM PST I am using an M1 Macbook and trying to run a .NET-Core WebAPI Project that uses Windows Active Directory for Authorization Purposes (f.e. Classes like System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity). I was trying to use Parallels with Windows 11 (for Arm64) only to find out that .NET 5.0 SDK is not supported on Arm64. I was hoping to use VS Code, however I tried using Visual Studio but that does not support Arm64 either (or is unusable with unknown Error Messages). I can build the project just fine using Rosetta2 and .NET-Core 5.0 SDK for Mac but I do not want to rewrite all the Authorization Code just so I can use it. Any ideas what else I could try? |

Can I import a list of contact name as the definition of a group Posted: 20 Nov 2021 04:56 PM PST I need to create a Group in Contacts on my mac book air. Each contact in the group already has a contact card. I know I can drag contacts into a new group but that is too labor intensive, error prone, and doesn't alway work (I replaced my group with a contact by accident for example). Is there a batch way to create a contact group, say from a file with a list of contact keys (e.f first and last name)? |
Turn off auto quote when answering gmail on iphone Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:24 PM PST When I send the 10th reply in an email thread on my iPhone8S, I am looking at all the previous replies above my typing, AND all of them quoted below my typing. Can I turn this off, so that either my reply is sent by itself, or the quoted replies are hidden by the 3-dot line? |
Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:09 PM PST I have a back up in time machine of 420gb. I need to get another machine that has only 128gb storage. I have a third party app that is essential to my profession and it's no longer downloadable from the third party. Will I be able to select this app and some others, narrowing down the size of the new install to fit the 128gb? And will this 3rd party app run? Please advise. Thanks. |
Catalina and pyenv install python versions fine, but anything needing ssl fails Posted: 20 Nov 2021 04:06 PM PST I seek to use pyenv instead of manually installing an official python release. My goal is to run the included script titled "Install Certificates.command". My assessment of the situation is pyenv is supposed to handle the same tasks that script performs during the automated install of a python version. Every python install via pyenv allows setting my global or local version just fine. after it's installed without error. I assume pyenv could not miss reporting install errors for any of the 6-8 official versions of python install, uninstall, and reinstall several times now. To narrow things, the following 3 versions of python matter: I seek to migrate a few packages to 3.10.0 and updating some of the ones I'm personally working on to make sure my required site-packages are all there for these versions.
Finally, I have removed all versions of python I successfully installed with pyenv (pyenv uninstall) and then uninstalled pyenv/pyenv-virtual with brew. Reinstalled both openssl@1.1 and openssl@3 (The only two required casks for pyenv and pyenv-virtual, depending on the python version, as of this writing according to brew) Even after reinstalling everything and looking over my .bashrc/.zshrc/.bash_profile, no matter what I do, I am unable to do even the most basic things that utilize ssl/certs. If I use the system version of python (2.7.16), the same things that fail on my pyenv versions work fine. Here is an example of the failure I get on any of the installed python versions I have except for Might there be a guide on resolving OpenSSL errors in this case? |
How do I set an .m4r file ringtone I airdropped to my iPhone 13? Posted: 20 Nov 2021 03:13 PM PST I have an old .m4r file on my Macbook, which I used AirDrop to copy to my iPhone 13. There's no way to set it as my ringtone, however. In the ringtone settings page, it's not there, and if I go to the Files app I can open the .m4r file and even play it, but there's no option to "set as ringtone". |
Inverted colours after waking up from sleep mode Posted: 20 Nov 2021 06:04 PM PST My 2020 MacBook Air M1 shows inverted colours when it wakes up from sleep mode after several hours. I installed macOS Monterey beta 12.1, so I am not sure if the problem is related to that or if it is a Hardware failure (which is strange too me because it really just happens after the device has been in sleep mode for multiple hours.) |
Understanding Airpods Pro pairing behaviour Posted: 21 Nov 2021 12:04 AM PST I got a pair of Airpod Pros last month (Sep 2021). I paired them with my phone initially, but noticed quickly that this means they automatically pair with my MacBook Air as well. For a while using both felt smooth and I had no trouble, but in the last week or so it has suddenly started feeling janky. My main annoyance is that when I have them paired to my laptop and I'm listening to music (on Spotify), sometimes even just picking up my phone and looking at the locked screen (which FaceID unlocks) will switch the pairing to the phone and my music stops, and I have to manually click at things for a while to get them back to the laptop and the music playing again. I think this happens when some other audio app is on top of the phone (say if I listened to podcasts on the phone earlier). Can anyone explain the logic to how the Airpods decide which device they should be paired to? And is there a way to stop them jumping to my phone by their own decision even in the middle of music listening? |
Macbook pro late 2011 good replacement battery? Posted: 20 Nov 2021 09:00 PM PST I'm having trouble finding a good MacBook pro battery that has an original voltage of 16.5V 3.65A max. Even for any laptop, I can't find the one with a voltage of 16.5V. Unless the information on the back of my MacBook is not the correct info I should be looking at. Also at this point should I even fix and upgrade this Macbook pro in late 2011 13 inches. |

How to always allow any app to do anything / disable Security & Privacy authorization dialogues Posted: 20 Nov 2021 06:02 PM PST Currently on macOS Catalina. I work in sound design and audio development. I use several Automator-scripts and other workflow applications to control various stuff, and for every new project or when I make any change in any AppleScript, I get a nagging dialogue to "Allow for Keystrokes", "Allow for Accessibility", etc. Sometimes I have to re-authorize all my automator scripts after changing a single line in one of them. This is killing my workflow, and this was implemented in macOS Mojave and forward with the new Privacy and Integrity-routines. On High Sierra this was never a problem, which was the system I used before. I need to disable this permanently. I want any app to make any change it want. I know the risks, but I don't care. It is not a problem for me running an isolated systems with absolute control over all apps I use. I never install anything new, it's an audio workstation with bare minimum applications installed. I've tried Disabling SIP, didn't help. Adding an application to "Full disk access" still makes me have to authorized it in all other fields. Sometimes, when I use application A to control application B, if doing changes in App A, the option to again authorize it to control B never shows up, and is not available. Question is: Does anyone know how I can globally disable the Security & Privacy check in macOS Catalina so that any application I start can control/do whatever it want? If there's no "official" setting, is there no way to hack the underlying preferences or similar? macOS should have a power user mode. |
Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:03 PM PST I just bought a pair of AKG Y500 bluetooth headphones. They paired up ok to the Mac and first time played perfectly. However, if I switch off the headphones and switch them back on, the audio is choppy. The only way I have found to clear it is to reset the Bluetooth module, then it's fine until the next time I switch the phones off. Is there a fix for this? Surely I don't have to do this every time I switch the phones on? |
Apple Health draining battery following iOS 14 update Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:06 PM PST Since updating to iOS 14 (now 14.0.1) Health is draining my battery even though I don't use it much. For example, just one minute of use results in 37% of battery use and I need to recharge 2-4 times (iPhone XS) to get through a day, rendering my phone pretty much useless. What causes this and how do I fix it. Is it another bug with iOS 14? |
Suppressing "The default interactive shell is now zsh" message in macOS Catalina Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:39 PM PST I know Catalina uses zsh as the default login shell and interactive shell, but it is very annoying when I open iTerm.app or run command with The support document the message links to is https://support.apple.com/kb/HT208050 How can I hide the verbose logging? I do not want to be reminding that the "default interactive shell is now zsh" every time I open Terminal. |
How to download macOS High Sierra from the Mojave App Store? Posted: 20 Nov 2021 07:05 PM PST I use the beta of macOS Mojave and I want to download High Sierra for another install. I don't find it in the new App Store, maybe because the update of the OS is now in the System Preferences. I try the link from the online version: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?mt=12 but the Download button is disabled. Any idea to download it? |
Does iCloud Two-factor authentication send a code to the same device as a log in request? Posted: 20 Nov 2021 04:14 PM PST My Apple-ID (e.g., on https://appleid.apple.com/ ) is set up to require entry of a 6-digit code sent to my registered Apple products. This code is being sent to the same device I'm currently requesting to log in. I feel this absolutely defeats the purpose of this 2-Factor Authentication: If a person knows my password, this person can receive the code on that device, and access my apple account without any problems. Is this a bug or can I set up / change how this security step works? |
Unable to format / erase hard drive Posted: 21 Nov 2021 01:26 AM PST I have an external HD that died on me a while ago and I'm trying to see if I can format / erase it to start using it again. The disk does not show up in Finder but I can see it in Disk Utility. When I try to erase it from there I get When I try to verify the volume: I've tried running a surface scan in Techtools Pro, it processed 650 blocks and all were bad. I cancelled the operation cause it was very slow.
I've also tried: Can I salvage this drive somehow or is it ready for the trash? |
How to know the duration of battery usage in one session? Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:15 PM PST I would like to know how long was my battery running since it's last charge. There is a built-in time-remaining counter but I would like a time-used counter. |
