Strange Ports opened on my Iphone?

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 03:34 AM PST

I've run NMAP several times on my home network in my campaign of learning the basics of network security.

So far all my devices except my PC have been Iphones/Chromebooks so nothing has been found in the way of open ports and so on (Apart from a few clear ones i.e 443/80).

However, runnining Nmap today I've found these ports randomly opened on the macaddress + Ip address associated with an Iphone 6(IOS V.12.56) I have at home.

  • 1062/tcp filtered veracity
  • 1088/tcp filtered cplscrambler-al
  • 1105/tcp filtered ftranhc
  • 1217/tcp filtered hpss-ndapi
  • 2002/tcp filtered globe
  • 2006/tcp filtered invokator
  • 2323/tcp filtered 3d-nfsd
  • 4443/tcp filtered pharos
  • 5102/tcp filtered admeng
  • 6101/tcp filtered backupexec
  • 6346/tcp filtered gnutella
  • 7103/tcp filtered unknown
  • 18101/tcp filtered unknown
  • 26214/tcp filtered unknown
  • 44443/tcp filtered coldfusion-auth

Highly confused and wondering if anyone recognizes these ports for Iphone. Off the bat I see things like Gnutella and coldfusion, to name a few. Highly boggling.

Is it the case that Iphone has these specific ports configured. If so, why are they configured if anyone knows? I've referenced some ports with Apple's official statement on TCP/UDP ports [1] and none seem to match.

For comparison when doing a network scan on my Iphone 6s(another device), I dont get these results let alone any detection of ports (if I recall correctly, maybe I've seen 443/80 open)

How to receive calls on Mac while iPhone is in focus mode

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:22 PM PST

I have turned on Focus on my phone (for a specific location) because I don't want to disturb my colleagues at work, but I have also turned it off on my Mac. It seems calls are not redirected to the Mac when the phone is in Focus mode. This doesn't seem very intuitive to me. Can I change that?

MacOS Monterey Terminal CLI: "open" command does not change focus

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 10:15 PM PST

Has anyone encountered an issue in which Terminal.app is no longer able to switch focus to another application?

For example, typing in the command open . would have previously opened the current folder in Finder, and then switch focus to Finder (i.e. bring Finder to foreground). However, that no longer works, and no options/etc. seem to fix it.

Similar results with applications (e.g. open /Applications/Safari.app/) and URLs (e.g. open http://www.google.com/). The requested action takes place, but the OS' focus stays on Terminal.app.

Terminal.app has full Accessibility permissions, so that's not it.

Anyone else run into this and/or found a solution?

Turn off iCloud on iPhone without removing Apple-ID

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:52 PM PST

When I created Apple-ID on iPhone (iOS 15) and then went to "Settings > Account name", there was "off" in iCloud line.

Then I tapped this line and followed instructions to create iCloud binding for the Apple-ID now knowing what will come next.

What came next is that there is constantly "5 GB" displayed in iCloud line and I can't turn it off again.

All the instructions on removing iCloud from iPhone found by me in Internet suggest to sign out from Apple-ID. But I do not want to sign off from Apple-ID! I just want the original state with "iCloud ..... off". Please help.

How can I update macos from app store that does not support 2fa?

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 01:13 AM PST

I have a machine with Yosemite currently and I aim to install Big Sur on it.

Unfortunately, even after I found the secret link to Big Sur on the app store, I'm not able to "get" it because I cannot log in with my Apple ID. It fails with a red error message saying:

 MZFinance.BadLogin.MacAppStore_Message

I'm able to log in online with the same credentials.

I'm assuming this is because 2FA was added after Yosemite/the bundled version of the app store, but I might be wrong. It seems I can only disable 2FA on a device, not online.

This presents an interesting conundrum; I cannot bypass 2FA without a newer OS, which I cannot get without using 2FA? Maybe there is another way?

Remapping Menu/Context Menu key to Option - Karabiner Not Working

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 10:25 PM PST

I'm using macOS BigSur with a Windows Keyboard - Drevo Tyrfind v2. I want to remap the Menu key that's on the right side of the keyboard next to the control button to the Opt key.

I'm using Karabiner v 13.2 however in the event viewer the app doesn't show/detect any Keyboard events even though I've allowed the INPUT observation for all Karabiner processes under System Preferences > Security & Privacy section.

Could someone help me remap the menu key to Opt key?

how should I delete a container to allow its disk space to be claimed by another container?

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 10:50 PM PST

On my 2017 Macbook Air, running Big Sur, I created a new "container" to install Monterey to test it. So I have a dual-boot system with Big Sur and Monterey living on two separate containers (along with separate copies of all my user and other files). Here is the diskutil list ...

I'm happy with Monterey, so I want to delete Big Sur and make my entire disk available to Monterey.

Can I simply go to DiskUtility and delete the Big Sur container, thereby ending up with a single container filling my entire disk ? It's appears not; if I click on "Partition" in DiskUtility, while booted into Monterey, the '-' button is greyed out for BigSur.

So must I clone my Monterey container onto an external disk, wipe the internal disk, and restore the Monterey container back ? I believe I can do this with DiskUtility too, using disk images; but I'm unclear on the exact steps.

Mac Mail search not working after updating to Big Sur

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:56 PM PST

I've recently updated from macOS 10.15 to Big Sur.

Generally everything works, apart from the search tool in macOS's native Mail.app: when I try to search for an email, phrase, contact etc, half the time i get 0 results, or the search query does not impact the results eg nothing changes / is search for.

This never used to happen on 10.15.

Any ideas?

How to recover from a renamed /etc directory in Mac OS Monterey (causing inability to log in)

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 09:39 PM PST

I unintentionally renamed the /etc directory on a Mac running macOS Monterey, with disastrous consequences: the password for sudo in Terminal is no longer recognised (because the /etc/sudoers file can no longer be found), which means I can no longer run any commands that require a password. Worse, I can no longer even log into the Mac.

To resolve the problem I began with the accepted answer described by David Rouse in response to a similar question - Renamed /etc folder. I can't login anymore - asked in 2019.

The first part of that solution (booting the Mac using Single User Mode with the existing password and running mount -uw) works perfectly.

However, even from Single User Mode I am unable to rename the /etc directory. For instance, attempting to run cd or mv in relation to /etc results in a No such file or directory message, and the symlink /private folder appears to be empty - see image below.

So how can I change the folder name back to /etc so that the Mac becomes operational again?

ER: MacOS Keyboard Text Shortcut Delimiter Options

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 03:49 AM PST

I rely on text snippets which I have built up over years. Coming from Catalina to a new M1 MBP I have attempted to switch from TextExpander to Phrase Express. However, both company's Arm-compatible offerings are completely devoid of quality.

That leaves me to ask if the native keyboard text replacement could perhaps be extended to include a delimiter to trigger its snippets instead of basic text replacement.

I use shift+~ as my delimiter to trigger snippets. Perhaps if I could get that to work we could finally leave paid snippet software.

How to save/export Memojis on macOS Monetrey

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:35 PM PST

I have been using macOS Monterey for the past 2 weeks, saving Memoji into my account. It isn't showing up anything. It has been raised while using Monterey in BigSur there was an folder called com.apple.Animoji.StickersApp.MessagesExtension where all my Memojis were stored, but in Monterey its showing me an empty folder.

Any solution suggestions for this problem ??

Always open links from other apps in "N Tabs"?

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 03:20 AM PST

Clicking on a link in another app when Safari is open to a tab group other than "N Tabs" (that must have a name) opens a new window rather than switching the "N Tabs" and opening a new tab there (as it does on iOS). Is there a setting to fix that?

How to skip verification of .dmg file located on a network filesystem?

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:48 PM PST

I have a file server (SMB/Samba 4.5.16) in the local network. If I put a .dmg file on it (anywhere) and try to mount it, MacOs will ALWAYS verify it first, which means reading through the whole thing, which takes almost 30 minutes for a 200GB file over GBit Ethernet.

So again, the scenario is: An SMB server exports a share, I mount that normally on the Mac (which works fine), the share contains a .dmg file, I try to mount that, the .dmg file gets verified. Every time. After that, the mount succeeds and I can use the dmg's filesystem without issue, but the 30 minute verification is a total show stopper.

I tried the following things, none of which help (all from How do I skip verification of a .dmg file?):

# Disable the "Are you sure you want to open this application?" dialog defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices LSQuarantine -bool false # Disable Disk Image Verification: Verifying ... defaults write com.apple.frameworks.diskimages skip-verify -bool true defaults write com.apple.frameworks.diskimages skip-verify-locked -bool true defaults write com.apple.frameworks.diskimages skip-verify-remote -bool true

Mounting the thing with hdiutil attach -noverify mounts the filesystem read-only -- useless.

This is an M1 Mac running Big Sur. I had an Intel Mac running Catalina before, and I didn't have this problem with that. The file mounted almost instantly (i.e. no verification), from the same file server.

If I copy the file to the local disk and mount it from there, it works without verification.

How do I fix this? Is anyone doing this successfully, and if so, which file server and MacOs version are you using?

Open external links in existing Safari window with tab groups

How to turn off new popup for spell checking in Word for Mac on macOS 11.3

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:05 PM PST

After the last macOS update, a popup started appearing when you click on a misspelled word in Word for Mac. Popup for helping with spelling in Word for Mac

This is a very frustrating function when you work in several different languages not always wanting to spell-check even though the red underscoring is good as a reminder. Hence, I want to keep the previous functionality to get suggestions when right-clicking on an underscored word but would really want to turn this popup function off. Does anyone know how this could be done?

The only option I've found is to turn spell-checking as you write off completely, which also removes the red underscoring that I'd like to keep.

Which partition do I need to format or fix in order to install Sierra or lion?

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 10:05 PM PST

I have tried in vain to get my MacBook Air back up and running. I did a system restore or reinstall a while back and something broke.

I've tried command+R and a bootable USB, there doesn't appear to be a time machine partition or option.

enter image description here

enter image description here

Which partition should I format? Can I clear them all and start from scratch?

If someone could show me how to get this issue resolved so I can use my laptop again that'd be great.

Can I tell my Mac to charge to 80% only?

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 02:14 AM PST

I leave my MacBook plugged in for days at a time, so the battery stays charged to 100%. Despite Apple claims to the contrary, I believe that the battery's capacity would be better preserved if I could keep it at an 80% state-of-charge. Is there any command or setting that would let me disable charging from the power adapter?

Here are various options, (1) being my most preferred:

  1. A setting to automatically maintain battery at 80% SoC (like my Tesla has)
  2. A setting/command to use the AC adapter for running power only ("not charging" state)
  3. A command to tell my Mac to totally ignore the AC adapter power

(2) could be cobbled into (1) with some kind of script. Even if not possible from the Mac itself, (3) could be cobbled together with an IOT switch. But with (3), it's unclear the lower maintained SoC would outweigh the cost of the additional cycling.

MiniDisplay port to HDMI to optical 5.1 audio only has 2-channel output

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 01:05 AM PST

I have a Macbook Air 2017. My goal is to have an optical output capable of 5.1 audio for my home theatre. My series of connections are, mini display port to hdmi and the hdmi connected towards hdmi to optical output and optical connected to my 5.1 home theatre. My midi setup and audio out setting automatically detected the hdmi out and and the hdmi icon appeared in both settings. But in my midi setup, it is showing 8 channels but, volume level of all of them is shown as disabled.

All of the channel volume sliders are disabled.

enter image description here

When I go for configuring, it shows 5.1 out. But when I tried to test each channels, only left and right are heard. All other channels are silent. When I played a 6 channel audio, it is missing every surround except from left & right.

I tried everything like soundflower, soundflowerbed app, MonitorControl etc. Nothing worked, still hearing only 2 channels.

Is there any solution for this? I need a 6 channel audio output.

sshfs mount directory disappears in Finder

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:42 PM PST

OSX High Sierra, sshfs setup:

sshfs username@hostname:/tmp/mnt/cruzer64 /Users/user/mount

Listing the contents from the command line performs as expected:

ls /Users/user/mount

The target directory is returned in BASH:

la -l /Users/user | grep mount

The folder ~/mount disappears from Finder after the sshfs server is mounted.

  • Why does the sshfs folder disappear in Finder and
  • What can be done to restore visibility in finder?

The problem / issue is confined to the Finder application

How do I disable mouse acceleration AND adjust tracking speed in High Sierra?

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 10:54 PM PST

The obvious answer you can find everywhere is:

defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1

which disables mouse acceleration, but locks you at one sensitivity.

Old solutions:

SmoothMouse no longer works. Mouse Acceleration Preferences Pane and SteelSeries ExactMouse both behave the same as com.apple.mouse.scaling -1 at all tracking speed settings (but without restart required).

Is it possible to disable mouse acceleration while still being able to adjust the sensitivity?

How does /usr/bin/java work on Mac?

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:37 PM PST

I found /usr/bin/java linked to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Commands/java. And its file content is different from /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_121.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java. But when I type /usr/bin/java -version it prints

java version "1.8.0_121" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_121-b13) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.121-b13, mixed mode)

So I'm curious about the implementation of /usr/bin/java and wondering why it can always point to the latest version of my JavaVirtualMachines?

DuetHeuristic-BM and nsurlsessiond hogging CPU and Memory on MacBook Air

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 09:40 PM PST

I recently updated my MacBook Air to macOS 10.12.2 and there are these two programs, DuetHeuristic-BM and nsurlsessiond which have been hogging CPU and memory continuously:

enter image description here

This heats up the machine and has significantly reduced the battery life. I went through the logs in Console and the most common logs that I see for these processes are as follows:-

DuetHeuristic-BM

:[ ] sumScores:38.410000, denominator:42.410000, FinalDecision: Must Not Proceed FinalScore: 0.000000}

and nsurlsessiond

HTTP load failed (error code: -1001 [4:-2104]) NSURLSessionTask finished with error - code: -1001 Task 281 for client will be retried after error - code: -1001

etc.

I am not sure what's causing this. My MacBook is critical to my work and this issue is causing me a lot of trouble. This has been happening the whole day, please help.

Update

Had a call with the Apple Customer support regarding this, they suggested me to reformat the MacBook and it worked. The processes aren't showing up at all, the laptop is working perfectly.

"Save as ..." in Microsoft Office always brings up "Documents" folder in Finder

How would I identify what's causing my Mac to permanently hang on shutdown?

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 09:07 PM PST

Whenever I try to shutdown or reboot my Mac (Macbook Pro 15" Retina late 2013, OS X 10.11.3) it closes all programs like normal and then it goes into that black screen with the progress bar. When it gets to about halfway it permanently hangs and won't ever finish rebooting. I looked at the log viewer and couldn't find anything in particular. Is there a way to monitor a shutdown more closely and find out what's causing it to get stuck?

How do I get the actual ip address of a printer in OSX Yosemite

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 09:10 PM PST

I need to know the ip address of my printer from OSX to be able to configure it in my daughters Windows laptop. I tried the solution suggested in How do you get a printer's IP in lion? but I only get: dnssd://AL-CX11-08F61E._printer._tcp.local./auto, and I cannot ping AL-CX11-08F61E._printer._tcp.local. because it does not resolve. Still, I can print. How do I get the actual IP address?

Edit: why doesn't it resolve from the commandline, but still OSX can print?

Vimeo embedded videos don't show in Safari

Posted: 19 Nov 2021 02:35 AM PST

Vimeo embedded videos do not appear in Safari although they appear in all other browsers on the same machine. Not only do the video not play but the placeholder where the video should be on the page is blank. This seems to be Safari 5 related.
