Character combinations appearing on the terminal when certain key-combinations are pressed

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:07 AM PDT

When I hold the Shift- and the Ctrl-Key on the keyboard and press the arrow-keys, then character-combinations are shown on the screen: ;6D;6A;6C;6B

What's the meaning of these characters ;NumberLetter?

After Mac OS Montery(12.0.1) update, my VirtualBox will not start and give NS_ERROR_FAILURE

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:46 PM PDT

Error: The virtual machine 'BASE' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: MachineWrap Interface: IMachine {85632c68-b5bb-4316-a900-5eb28d3413df}

I updated my mac to Monterey last night. After that, my VM will not start. I have tried several things after looking at various other blogs but none seem to solve the issue.

  1. Updating VirtualBox to latest release i.e. 6.1.28
  2. Downloading extension for VirtualBox from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
  3. Uninstalling VirtualBox and executing VirtualBox.pkg and then allowing "Oracle America" in Security and Privacy setting this link
  4. Enable/Disable SIP in Recovery mode. csrutil status , csrutil enable/disable this link
  5. The 'Discard' button is greyed.
  6. I also checked the read/write access of the VM folders but they are fine.

Here is the OS details.

Why does MacOS 11.6 still use Python 2 as its system Python in end of 2021?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:33 PM PDT

Why does MacOS 11.6 still uses Python 2 as its system Python instead of Python 3? The deprecated Python 2 has no security fixes since 2020, isn't it dangerous to still ship it in an OS?

I have been reading this thread explaining which packages still required Python 2 two years ago: Which macOS tools require Python 2 (rather than Python 3)?

But what about now? Are there still packages in MacOS that are not fully tested with Python 3 at the end of 2021?

Macos Monterey update broke my Fn-a Emacs keybind; how to disable it?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:15 PM PDT

I am resigned to moving the keybind to Fn-x, but just in case there's an easy way to disable it, I thought I'd ask.

Eminent domain! Eat the rich!

How to create a keybinding using the [fn] key as a modifier?

Not what I want.

iPhone 13: Possible to resize Google Calendar Widget?

Mac Mini M1 with three monitors

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:59 PM PDT

As you know the Mac Mini M1 has one HDMI, 2 USB-C connectors. Currently I connected two monitors to it via the HDMI and through one of the USB-C port.

So what happens if I connect another monitor to the 2nd USB-C port? Will it provide me a third display?

Change the menu bar's height

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:45 PM PDT

The latest MacBook Pro has a notch on the top of the screen. Due to this, Apple changed the height of the menu bar. I actually prefer the taller menu bar, but don't use a MacBook Pro. I use a Mac mini. Is there a way to change the height to the new one?

Recreate Documents folder that was deleted

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:21 PM PDT

How do you recreate a documents folder (Or desktop or downloads folder) after permanently deleting them. If someone deleted the documents folder and permanently removed it from the trash, how can you get it back?

When you try to create a new folder in the user's directory, it gets a message along these lines: The name "Desktop" is already taken, please choose another one.

Restoring time machine, icloud, or 3rd party backup recovery software is not an option. It was also on Mojave. I don't believe any of the ACLs have been removed/modified so I don't understand how the folders were deleted.

I have the same kind of situation as this: How to restore default folders for Desktop, Downloads and Documents?

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch 2020) RAM Upgrade

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:47 PM PDT

I purchased and installed 4x32GB of RAM (OWC2666DR4S128S) in my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch 2020) RAM. It works.

I noticed that neither Manufacturer nor Part Number are detected when I inspect and wondered if this is a function of my installation or the OWC2666DR4S128S or just MacOSX.

Should MacOSX be able to identify the Manufacturer and Part Number from OWC2666DR4S128S?

And do I need to reinstall the memory if it indicates that it is not done well?

enter image description here

I also ran this (per response from @pion)

ioreg -p IODeviceTree -n memory -r

and returned

hw_lock_bit_nopreempt() kernel panic M1 Macbook Pro

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:35 PM PDT

My M1 Macbook Pro has constant kernel panics with some variation of:

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffe0017ae7a44): "hw_lock_bit_nopreempt(): timed out (0xfffffdf036ef019c)"

I cannot figure out what the cause is. Usually the crash report will include information about the last run kext to identify the faulty software but the crash reports I get don't have any kext information.

Anybody know what the cause might be?

Machine info:

Old Time Machine disk - can't restore or see files

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:24 PM PDT

I recovered an old external hard drive that I used for Time Machine backups. Now my files look like this

TimeMachine\Name MacBook Pro.tmp\0

TimeMachine\Name MacBook Pro.tmp\1a

TimeMachine\Name MacBook Pro.tmp\1a0

TimeMachine\Name MacBook Pro.tmp\1a0b

... and so on. Is there a way to look into this Time Machine backup to recover old files?

Does anyone have Areca backup running on a Mac with Big Sur?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:38 PM PDT

I have used Areca backup software for years. First with a laptop running MS Windows XP and then with several MacBook Air machines. Going from Catalina to Big Sur, the Areca backup software doesn't work. Does anyone have it working with Big Sur? Areca is written in Java.

Yes, I do use Time Machine for backups also.

How can I get a list of processes running on my mac that are not system processes?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:32 PM PDT

I need a way to get a list of non-system processes running in the background. Most preferably I would like it to send this list to a text file. By "System processes," I mean processes that were started by a 3rd party app, like Adobe's absolute parade of background processes that stay on even if you close the app.

How to set default nice value for a particular process that is started by launchd?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:38 PM PDT

I want to set the custom priority level (i.e. nice) to a particular program as the default priority level. The tricky thing is that the process is not started by me but by background processes not under my control. Is it possible?

Is there a way to increase tracking speed beyond mac's fastest point?

I have the tracking speed set to go as fast as it can, is there a way to make it even faster?

I have come from a PC where it is a lot more sensitive so this feels still quite slow.

How to save a video from the web to my iPhone Camera Roll

I uploaded a video to the web and I want to save it to the Camera Roll. How can I do that? I first uploaded it to Youtube and then I tried to download it from bitdownloader.io but it only opens it on a new Safari window. Also, I have phone 4 so I'm kinda limited in options.

Can 2021 MacBook Pro displays be permanently set to 1000 nits?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:25 PM PDT

For those who work in very bright environments, it was promising to hear that the new MacBook Pros have a display brightness of 1000 nits (peak brightness of 1600 nits):

enter image description here

However, a more recent review of the laptops said:

but it's not quite what you think, the display mostly runs at a max of 500 nits ... allows it to hit that 1600 nits brightness, but only when you're viewing HDR content, the rest of the system is the same as ever 500 nits

Question

Can the new MacBook Pros be somehow forced to stay at 1000 nits all the time? That is, is there a way to force a higher-than-500-nits brightness on all content (not just HDR content)?

Modify SIP in normally booted system

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:22 PM PDT

I have MacBook Pro (2017) with macOS High Sierra (10.13.6). I have SIP and amfi disabled. I want to enable a part / the majority of SIP (e.g. csrutil enable --without fs) without having to reboot into the recovery partition and run the csrutil command there.

I tried to modify the nvram variable csr-active-config using nvram csr-active-config="w%01%00%00", but it returned an error: nvram: Error setting variable - 'csr-active-config': (iokit/common) general error. Modifying the variable name gave successful result:

# nvram ccsr-active-config="w%01%00%00" # nvram ccsr-active-config ccsr-active-config w%01%00%00

Which indicated that there is still something protecting the SIP configuration even when SIP is completely disabled:

# csrutil status System Integrity Protection status: disabled.

Note that I can change boot-args variable with nvram because I disabled SIP:

# nvram boot-args="amfi_get_out_of_my_way=0x1" # nvram boot-args boot-args amfi_get_out_of_my_way=0x1

There is only one relevant log message while setting SIP nvram:

ERROR 09:47:22.096544 +0800 kernel Sandbox: nvram(92857) System Policy: deny(1) nvram-set csr-active-config

Is it possible to change SIP configuration to become stricter (not less strict) booting into Recovery OS?

Preferably, the solution can enforce SIP configuration as soon as it's changed. The following logs in Console when I do chmod -x /bin/ls make me think it's possible:

INFO 11:07:38.852242 +0800 sandboxd Symbolicator for chmod[94599] is NULL. ERROR 11:07:38.862934 +0800 sandboxd Failed to produce a full report for: chmod[94599]. ERROR 11:07:38.863015 +0800 sandboxd Sandbox: chmod(94599) System Policy: allow file-write-mode /bin/ls

How to write defaults value from a file as bytes?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:59 PM PDT

How to save content of a file into via defaults in such a way that they are handled as -data type?

In fact, I am searching for a command line alternative for this obj-c code:

NSData *data = // ... get the data  NSUserDefaults *userDefaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];  [userDefaults setObject:data forKey:@"mykey"];

When I call defaults read on that key I get:

% defaults read mydomain mykey  {length = 400, bytes = 0xdcf2dbbb cb4343d7 ec4324ae 1234de18 ... 289f4567 ec4324ae }

Later in an obj-c app, the data are read using:

NSUserDefaults *userDefaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];  NSData *data = [userDefaults dataForKey:@"mykey"];

Even I have no idea what the right approach to mimic setting the key is, I presume it might be something like:

% FILEDATA=... # read abc.xyz into a variable % defaults write mydomain mykey -data "$FILEDATA" # save into user data

How to bypass password prompt with vnc connection from terminal

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:04 PM PDT

Previously, screen sharing to Catalina (10.15.7) from Big Sur (11.1) using terminal:

open vnc://[user]:[password]@[host].local

would open a screen sharing session without having to enter a password.

After the Big Sur 11.2 upgrade, Catalina now displays the login screen and asks for the password.

How can I correctly pass the password to the screen sharing session and bypass the login screen?

Macbook Pro keyboard and mousepad hang after waking up while connected to VPN

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:04 AM PDT

I have a 2018 15" MacBook Pro running OS X Catalina 10.15.5 (19F101). When I am connected to the company VPN (via the built-in client, no third party VPNs), and my computer goes to sleep, it often freezes for a few minutes when waking up.

When this happens, upon tapping a key or the track pad the screen wakes up, but the mouse cursor is frozen, and the keyboard does not seem to register any input. The touch bar still works (I can adjust volume, brightness, etc), and if I press Esc then the screen immediately turns off, as though it realized "oh snap, I'm actually still asleep". If I wait 3-5 minutes, it will eventually shake itself out of this stupor and wake up properly.

It also only seems to happen if it goes to sleep for at least a few minutes (so, only on actual sleep, not just display blanking).

On MacOS 10.15.5, "About This Mac --> Storage" is not recognizing my RAID-1 drive correctly

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:07 PM PDT

I upgraded from El Capitan to Catalina 10.15.5 on a MacbookPro mid-2012 , the oldest HW that Catalina will run on. Then, I created a RAID-1 drive using 2 USB disks. "About This Mac --> Storage" is not showing a logical 500-gb RAID-1 drive, the 500-gb disk RAID member, and the 500-gb partition RAID member is not displayed, but the 1-tb disk for this partition, and the other 500-gb partition on the same disk, is displayed.

On the other hand:
(1) "Go -> Utility -> Disk Utility ", (2) "Finder", and (3) command-line utilities all show the correct drive structure: the logical RAID-1 drive, the 2 physical disks, the 2 partitions of the 1-tb disk. Further, the amount of available drive space, on all disks, all agree.

note:
I did a major reorg of my data when I upgraded to Catalina. My internal disk is SSD, and Catalina automatically formatted it to APFS. Next, I emptied the 500-gb and 1-tb disks into a 2-tb disk. I decided to re-format both (hfs+). Using Catalina's RAID tool, I created the RAID-1 drive.

Everything, except "About This Mac --> Storage", looks great so I am proceeding. So, I'm just reporting this and thinking this has something to do with a mid-2012 MacBook Pro being the oldest HW to support Catalina. Since data is critical to me these days, please tell me if I should be concerned about the strange "About This Mac --> Storage" result.

I looked around online and discovered the app OmniDiskSweeper. I gave it a go and discovered a massive file that appears to be related to google chrome, located in /private/var/folders/j9/T/com.google.Chrome/zip_cache-9F00A5C9-014F-4D48-AC13-2F74C26F4Fc7-31472-000034BBAF5DAD8A

Does anyone have any idea what this could be, and how it could be so large? can I delete it?

When i try manually searching for any of those files in finder, it turns up blank. omnidisksweep is the only way I can see it (that I know of anyways) and thus the only way to delete it as well. I really want to destroy this file but afraid to destroy some crucial thing on my computer.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Three monitor set up - how to set one monitor to grayscale?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:16 PM PDT

I have a Retina MacBook Pro (mid-2015), powering an Apple Cinema Display 24" monitor, and a run-of-the-mill, cheap and inaccurate Samsung monitor (when it comes to color). I've connected both of these displays to the RMBP via Thunderbolt.

Now, since the color accuracy is pretty weak on the Samsung monitor - I'm trying to figure out how to use macOS Sierra to change that, and that monitor only, to grayscale. I would only use it to display information that can be viewed in grayscale (Slack chats, email, Terminal, logs, Mixpanel/Geckoboard analytics, you know, not browse websites). I am well aware that the Accessibility -settings in System Preferences can be applied so that each of the three screens is grayscale. I'm not looking for that. If I was looking for that, I'd just launch a Grayswicha-app I made with AppleScript.

I'm looking to set the Samsung, and only the Samsung, to grayscale.

Is there some way of doing this?

Would really appreciate any assistance on this.

PS Not looking for "change all your apps to be grayscale, and then if you want the same app to be colored too on a different display, do another profile/alias for each and every one of the apps, then run it with the color... oh hang on that's a great deal of work, do it anyway cos this is a good solution" -type solutions :(
