iMac late 2012, temperature issues

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 12:06 AM PDT

I have a late 2012 iMac that's always worked really well but out of the blue it started to slow down significantly. It will work fine for half an hour and then slow to a crawl, cursor drags, starting/quitting apps takes forever, etc. I ran a dtrace profile and see a ton of these stack traces:

AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement`AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement::free()+0x55f1  mach_kernel`call_continuation+0x17  284

Which made me think it's something wrong with one of the thermal sensors. Rebooting doesn't fix the issue, I have to shut the box down for a few minutes. Resetting the nvram seemed to work for a bit but it came back.

I'm happy to open it up and change a part, but I've no idea where the sensor(s) are. Any ideas, alternate theories or suggestions on how to debug this further?

Thanks!

Any idea on how to solve this error?

How can I access a resource or file from one Homebrew formula in another's `install`?

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 06:02 PM PDT

I have one formula "A" that installs stuff in its share directory, and I want to know how to read the directory from another formula("B")'s install. Is it possible?

Do I need to install A's resources into etc. instead of share? Or how can I share data between packages?

I would use B's data as a resource, but it's got its own build process, so then I thought having its own formula would be better.

Thanks in advance!

Ethernet <-> Thunderbolt 2 <-> USB-C : What speed?

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 05:58 PM PDT

Over a lazy weekend, I find myself wanting to connect my fairly new MacBook Pro, with its USB-C connections, to wired ethernet coming off my cable box. Nominal cable speed is 200Mbps; I regularly measure speeds of up to 250Mbps.

However, unfortunately I do not have a direct Ethernet to USB-C. And -- re: lazy weekend -- I can't be bothered to drive to a store to buy one (e.g. this Belkin). However, rummaging around my box of ancient, obsolete, and otherwise weird crap, I find I do have:

  1. An Apple A1433 Ethernet female to Thunderbolt 2 male connector; and
  2. An Apple A1790 Thunderbolt 3 female to USB-C male connector

Bolted together, those two give me Ethernet female to USB-C male.

Trouble is that, while that does work in terms of connectivity, and while each of the components should be well capable of handling the nominal 200Mpbs coming in from the street (and, as I say, I often get up to 250Mbps), it's only giving me around 60Mbps.

So, any idea what part of the setup could be causing the speed degradation?

In the Find My App - why does Macbook show a random time in the middle of the night?

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 07:38 PM PDT

I have family sharing on, and one of my own laptops was showing a timestamp of 3am, but I was asleep then.

Will a macbook ever periodically "ping" its location, or is it exclusively when it is being requested? I asked all my family members if anyone was awake then and looking at the app, but everyone said they were asleep.

Is there another reason that a macbook may show a time when it's not actively in use, or if its location is not being requested?

How to Auto-Enable Low Power Mode when iPhone is on Standby

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 03:46 PM PDT

Is there a way to have an iPhone automatically switch to Low Power mode when it's in Standby? I can use Automation to switch to Low Power mode when an app is closed, but if I press the power button to put the phone in Standby the automation doesn't run.

MacBook sky-blue screen login

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 02:13 PM PDT

I have a E2008 black MacBook 4.1 (core2duo, GMA x3100)

When I boot osx 10.6 or 10.7 it will show a light blue screen at Login (as if the display was a second monitor).

It's possible to go further by enabling auto-login, which will bring you to the desktop and avoid the issue but the login stays blue and unusable. this happens only after boot, not if I switch users.

sometimes with autologin, the desktop will be unresponsive (only cursor moves) for a minute, and then as if nothing happened. everything else seems normal

New user account for installing command line software

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 04:49 PM PDT

I have two accounts on my computer - one is the admin and another is a standard "user" account.

I want to install a few command line tools, some of which I am unsure if they will install successfully or not.

I'm wondering if the best way to do this would be to create another new user account so I can try installing them there? I don't want to mess up my day to day account by attempting to install them there.

If something did go wrong, I'm guessing that nothing on my admin account or standard day to day account would be touched? I could simply just delete the "test" account?

Thanks

I’m lost and I need help figuring out something having to do with “signed certificates” I found on my iPhone [closed]

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:52 PM PDT

I'll try and explain this the best that I can, if I leave any necessary information out just let me know and I will answer what I am able to. I have read some of the responses to other questions here and it seems like maybe there is an atmosphere of skepticism when people ask questions or suggest that they believe that they have been hacked, I'm sure there are reasons for that skepticism that are completely over my head, but I am completely legit and actually trying to figure out and resolve an issue that may or may not be the result of being hacked, but it seems extremely unusual to me. As far as my level of knowledge with computers, networks, software etc. overall….I've never had any type of actual class or training, I'm in my early 40s so when I was in school the extent of our "computer" class was really just basic typing, (I.E get to the point where you know what "home row" is and are able to type 25 words a minute and you pass. I do know what jailbreaking/rooting is, I can configure a router, I've been trying to learn how to do more using the command line (I have an older MacBook Pro and a newer Windows 10 Asus laptop),but I think somewhere around the release of iCloud by Apple, something about the level of technology and the speed that it was advancing just left me completely confused and I probably shouldn't have started using it until I fully understood it but that's in the past and here I am…So it started around 2014/15 and I started dating someone who also had an iPhone and Apple products, and at the time I didn't understand what happened if you used someone else's device to log into your iCloud account, I thought that if I signed in, did what I needed to, signed right back out I was good and obviously that's not the case. Soon after that her contacts began syncing to my Apple ID and vice versa, it was a big mess that caused a lot of problems and to this day isn't resolved (if I log into that iCloud account I end up with a list of over 200 contacts that aren't mine. The first thing I don't understand is; Are these the saved contacts from the first time that they would have synced or would they continue to update in real time? (Meaning our accounts are still somehow linked together?) Is this fixable where I can be confident that she isn't able to still somehow access my account? And now for the main reason I'm posting. Just about an hour ago I was logging into a site and accessing my saved usernames/passwords on my iPhone (6S running iOS 14.6) and I noticed a website that didn't sound at all familiar to me and a warning that my password used an easily guessable number sequence, so I clicked on the "change password on website" option and it wouldn't open,Checked the web address and it's "https://servicenowservices.com/.well-known/change-password". I found a URL redirect checking site that is supposed to show whether you are being sent to the actual site or somewhere else and I got the error "self signed certificate in chain", then I noticed that the link was something to do with a VPN but the URL it was showing me ended in .gov, so when I tried opening that site I got the safari security warning page stating that they can't guarantee the legitimacy of the site, I clicked on "view certificate" and took several screenshots that include a list of "alternate DNS names" I'm just extremely frustrated and have no idea where to even start at this point to find this "certificate" and remove it if it exists, or what…Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

is there any version of siri shortcuts for PC [closed]

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:59 PM PDT

yes - recently i'm using my PC more than mobiles, so i'm just trying to find a port or version of siri shortcuts for my PC because im publishing them on facebook && routinehub. i was trying to use js-shortcuts but theirs documentation is far away from best. i was also trying shortcuts-py but the build is broken (and i'm even unable to install, what more to say?). there is shortcutor app but this one is paid. all online editors are tiny and doesn't contain all useful for me actions (like download-app and system settings actions). and the funniest thing is that my PC run under... ubuntu 21.04 (no, no, not a joke). no way to make it when i'm far away from phone? anyone?

Macbook Pro 16" (2019 with i9 processor) performing terribly when connected to an external monitor

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 12:58 PM PDT

I've been using my macbook pro with an external monitor for about 1 year now. In the past few weeks though, I'm struggling doing so because my macbook performance drops as soon as I connect it to my external monitor (I have a 1440p LG monitor which I connect to via a Displayport cable). The lag and the poor performance are clearly visible even if I'm simply browsing a web page. If I try to move a window around the desktop it just gets visibly laggy. Temperatures are also quite low (the lag is visible even at 55-60 degrees for the CPU). Just so you know how bad it is, I ran two geekbench tests, with and without external monitor.

Geekbench without external monitor

Any suggestions on how to fix?

When printing, does Mac handle converting PDFs to rasters, or does the printer do that?

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 12:00 AM PDT

My printer states in its specifications that it supports PostScript 3, PCL 5e/6, PDF, and TIFF. However, several other printers from that manufacturer do not state they support PDF. On the printers that support PDF, does Mac send the PDF file to the printer to be rasterised, and on the non-PDF supporting ones does Mac handle the rasterisation? I am specifically asking about Mac's default print window.

Downgrade iOS to bypass passcode?

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:51 AM PDT

I have an old iPad Air 2 that I forgot the passcode for. I want to unlock it without losing my data. I know it's probably impossible on the newer iPadOS but I want to know if I can downgrade the OS to an older version that has security exploits. Can someone tell me if this is possible and if so how to downgrade and the bypass the passcode.

Mac 11.4 custom app shortcuts disappearing

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:46 AM PDT

I just updated to macOS 11.4 on a 2020 M1 mac mini. When creating an app shortcut in system preferences, everything works normally. I select an app, create the shortcut, then everything works.

Upon closing system preferences and reopening, the custom shortcuts list disappears. This makes altering the shortcuts impossible so if there was an error, I have to start ALL OVER. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Thanks!

blacklist a bluetooth device that repeatedly connects to MacOS

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:35 AM PDT

An Esinkin bluetooth audio receiver that I connected to once is DOSing my Macbook Pro! I unpaired from it and disabled BT discoverability, but the thing keeps trying to connect to my computer. I see its name repeatedly appearing briefly in the BT device list, and while that's happening my computer becomes sluggish.

Is there a way to blacklist its BD_ADDR so my computer will not respond to it? My only option is to turn it off (it's my housemate's) or ensure that multiple devices other are connected to it. I'd just buy the owner a new one, but I'm not content to let this vulnerability persist without knowing how to secure my computer.

MacOS missing after using EaseUS partition on Bootcamp

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:32 AM PDT

I used EaseUS partition on bootcamp in order to resize the storage on my Windows OS. After succesfully resizing it, the mac OS is missing. Whenever I restart my Macbook Air and hold alt(option) button, it only shows windows.

I tried the diskutil list and gpt disk show and here's what I found: enter image description here

The volume is the wrong format for a backup. Why?

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 09:39 AM PDT

For late visitors to this question - the highest-voted answer is completely wrong. I offered the bounty but did not award it. The bounty was auto-awarded by the system. I cannot revoke it.
I have now managed to find a workaround & marked my own answer as accepted.

TL:DR
I've honed this issue down to one simple 'fact'.
The Time Machine drive will error with "The volume is the wrong format for a backup." on any attempt, by any method, to copy any file from within Backups.backupdb to any APFS volume. It works to any HFS+ volume.

I can copy a file to the TM volume root [outside the Backups.backupdb folder] & then copy out to APFS, but anything inside the backups folder will error.

I've trimmed most of the early experimental structure from this & left just the pertinent latest information

macOS Mojave, Mac Pro 5,1
Boot drive APFS [SSD], Time Machine drive HFS+ [HD]. All drives internal.

I have tested using two clones of my boot drive, as one SSD is mounted on a PCI card & the Mac considers it 'external'. This seems to make no difference. Boot drives are SSDs, GUID/APFS, case-insensitive.

Time Machine has been tested to three different drives, starting with the original year old backup & then with brand new backups & even brand new hard drives. All formatted GUID/HFS+ case-insensitive, as standard.

All drives have been tested with both TechTool Pro 14 & DiskWarrior [HFS only for DW] & all have a clean bill of heath.

All drives were formatted in Disk Utility using standard methods. Time Machine was set up & run as standard.
Files tested for recovery have been checked & opened to see they are still correct & not corrupted in any way - from original source & also directly from within Time Machine. Images & text files have been tested. No corruption detected at all.
Recoveries tested from Safe Mode [from where I deleted all local snapshots, including some sticky ones that wouldn't go away], no change.
Recoveries also tested from a new admin account. No change.

Additional, possibly pertinent [though possibly not] information.

Backups to the same Time Machine from HFS+ volumes will restore to the original HFS volume. Admin permission is requested.

Any file restored this way will then request admin perms even to delete [& even if 'ignore perms' is set on the drive.]. This is whether it was restored in the normal [working] manner back to HFS or manually dragged from an APFS backup to HFS.
Perms show the same as any other file on the volume, eg -rw-r--r--@ 1 glee staff which is exactly the same as any other file in the same folder that wasn't brought back from TM.
Removing all attributes xattr -c & setting perms to 'everyone' does not change this request for admin perm to delete.
Removing ACLs, chmod -N does stop this admin request, but I can't see what the offending ACL is 0: group:everyone deny write, delete, append, writeattr, writeextattr, chown unless it's that the owner seems to be 0 not 501.

Realised SIP was disabled. Re-enabled, ran fix perms on boot drive

diskutil resetUserPermissions / id -u
trying yet another brand new Time Machine drive…
No change.

Any suggestions, next steps, tests to perform?

At the moment I am not willing to destroy the entire boot drive to clean install. I shall be able to try this as soon as Apple ship the new M1 iMacs, as I will then have a spare, almost identical Mac Pro I can play with.

Results of diskutil list & below diskutil apfs list
The boot volume is disk6 & disk7 which is PCI-mounted, though the OS thinks it's external.
If I boot instead from the other 'internal' SSD, 'Clone' I get exactly the same results.

Internal hard disk won't wipe, can't reinstall OS because not enough disk space

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 10:07 AM PDT

My MacBook Pro 2017 (running Big Sur) is not booting. Instead, it is showing me a flashing folder with a question mark.

When I boot from an external ssd, I can see my data from my internal ssd, but I can't delete something from it.

When I'm in recovery mode, I can't reinstall the os because I don't have enough space, and in disk utility, and when I'm trying to erase my disk, it says: "A writeable disk is required (-69772)".

What can I do to erase my disk and reinstall the os ?

Export emails but keep them searchable

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 08:06 PM PDT

I've got a couple of mailboxes for old businesses on my MacMail. I keep them there because there are loads of emails, and I may need them in the future. The reason I haven't just exported them and archived them is that I still want them to show up in search results when I search through my emails.

The problems I have are:

  1. I keep getting notifications that I have to put the passwords in for these mailboxes. That's very frustrating.
  2. For some reason, something keeps blocking my IP address from one of the business' domain name. Any time I log onto a different wifi, it blocks that IP address too. I suspect it's something to do with invalid details on one of these mailboxes (but if it could be anything else, please let me know).

My ideal solution would be to have these mailboxes sat there, but completely inactive, not connected to the internet in anyway, just a repository for a bunch of emails. But I may have to face facts that I may need to delete them altogether, exporting the emails first. But then they won't be included in the search. Is there any way I can have my cake and eat it?

Connecting MacBook Pro Retina late 2013 with Thunderbolt 2 ports to USB-C hub

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 12:04 AM PDT

Can anyone confirm that if I purchase Apple Thunderbolt 2 adaptor I can connect my MacBook Thunderbolt 2 port via Thunderbolt cable to adaptor and then connect to USB-C hub. Will it provide power to the hub when connected?

How do I add locally hosted DNS server while preserving default LAN DNS

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 05:02 PM PDT

My question is very similar to How do I add custom DNS server and preserving default DNS of ISP in OS X Mountain Lion however I am looking to filter and resolve all dns requests via my resolver, so adding a domain specific file to /etc/resolver/ won't work, unless there's a way to target all domains (https://serverfault.com/a/164215/203355 seems interesting but doesn't seem to work in my testing).

I don't want to use a hard-coded public dns as the upstream dns for my local resolver because I have a dnat rule on my local network to redirect all dns traffic to my pihole, however when this rule is in use, the traffic appears to the pihole to be from the router and messes up my analytics.

My current setup is:

dnsmasq has resolv-file=/etc/resolv.conf in its config so that it uses the DHCP provided dns as its upstream (after doing filtering).

I have a file /etc/resolver/root which contains this:

nameserver 127.0.0.1 domain . search_order 1000

scutil --dns lists my 127.0.0.1 resolver (as #8), the order value is the lowest in the list, though resolver #1 (from dhcp) does not have an order value.

resolver #1 nameserver[0] : 10.0.1.204 if_index : 11 (en10) flags : Request A records, Request AAAA records reach : 0x00020002 (Reachable,Directly Reachable Address) [...] resolver #8 nameserver[0] : 127.0.0.1 flags : Request A records, Request AAAA records reach : 0x00030002 (Reachable,Local Address,Directly Reachable Address) order : 1000

I don't know if unbound can use the DHCP provided dns server as an upstream any easier than dnsmasq but I could switch if that would be easier. Otherwise I'm just trying to configure the macOS resolver system to prioritize my local resolver.

How to customize Touch Bar on the Macbook Pro 13" when Mathematica is on

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 02:04 PM PDT

Whenever I use Wolfram Mathematica, the Touch Bar on my Macbook Pro has a "New Document" button. My question is, how do I make sure I don't have that button when I open Mathematica?

It is annoying, as every time I reach to hit the esc key, sometimes the "New Document" button gets tapped, resulting in a new document popping up.

Thanks for any advice you have!

Mac chrome can't drag and scroll in bookmark folder

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 12:08 PM PDT

I tried asking reddit and chrome forum but I think it's a Mac thing, something with scrolling, anyway I can't drag bookmarks up or down a folder on the bookmark bar, it gets stuck, from googling I found at least one person with a similar problem and lots of others with bookmark dragging problems.

Sometimes I want to rearrange on the fly, or add a seperator, bookmark manager is better, but less convenient for things like adding horizontal seperators, here's what it looks like

Don't really have any ideas, I won't reinstall my whole chrome profile for it, too many bookmarks and things in my profile, I don't want to risk corruption, but any other ideas I'll try before I give up on it.

No allow button in security and privacy preferences

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 02:53 PM PDT

An example of what should be there. When trying to install VMWare in MacOS Catalina, under security and privacy system preferences and then general, I do not see a way to allow what it needs to work properly. Even when I unlock the system preferences, it does not give me an option to allow in order to complete the setup. I also recently tried installing parallels desktop, which requires the same procedure in system preferences, and I was not able to get that working properly either because the allow button is not there. Anyone know why this might be? Thanks so much for the help!

How to add keyboard shortcut for "Move to Predicted Mailbox" in Apple Mail?

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 04:02 PM PDT

In Apple Mail (under macOS Catalina, 10.15.3) there is a menu item "Move to Predicted Mailbox" . It already has a keyboard shortcut ^ CMD M.

I would like to change that to something else. Now, the problem is that this menu item changes every time I select a different message, depending on the folder Mail predicts. So, one time it is called 'Move to "MailboxA"' , another time it might be called 'Move to "MailboxB"' . Consequently, I cannot define a keyboard shortcut in System Preferences for it. I have tried to define it for "Move to Predicted Mailbox", but when Mail actually does predict a mailbox, then it shows the original shortcut, not mine.

Does anyone have an idea how I might be able to define a shortcut for this that "sticks"?

How to change the appearance of volume & brightness overlay in dark mode?

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 03:04 PM PDT

As you all know, in MacOS Mojave Apple has released a thing called Dark Mode. My problem is that I got used to the previous appearance of dark mode, when there were only dark Dock and Menu Bar. I've found out that I can type a command in Terminal to get back that previous view:

defaults write -g NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance -bool Yes

That worked fine, BUT there is one trouble. Not everything turned white correctly. For example, language switcher stayed as white text above white background, which is not really legible. Brightness and volume regulators stayed as dark cells above dark background, which is similarly illegible. Pictures below:

Illegible volume regulator Illegible brightness regulator Illegible language switcher

Appearance of language switcher was fixed by typing:

defaults write com.apple.TextInputSwitcher NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance -bool No

After this, it turned fully black (like for regular dark theme), that's fine by me.

Legible language switcher

I believe, that I can do the same thing to the audio & brightness overlay. The problem is that I don't know the specific name of this UI element to address it using that command. I would like to change its appearance to light one. It there a way to do that?

One more thing - is it possible to change the color of Notification Center and notifications themselves? They also stayed fully dark. I prefer seeing in dark only menubar and dock. I would be very grateful if there is a solution to my problem. Thanks in advance!

Is there any way to install homebrew on iOS (jailbroken)

The command that I tried to use is the command that macOS uses to install homebrew.

Is there any way to successfully install homebrew on my iPhone?

This problem could be caused by the fact that my phone is only semi-jailbroken.

Ruby is installed, and my phone is semi-jailbroken (no tweaks, whenever I try to jailbreak with tweaks enabled, it gets stuck springing, respring two times and gets stuck at the same spot both times, and then reboots into regular iOS).

Mount a samba drive, with password from keychain

Posted: 06 Jun 2021 12:33 PM PDT

I have a problem with Jettison, that tries to remount a samba drive, that is protected by a password.

It uses the following command line:

/sbin/mount_smbfs //[user]@[server]/work /Volumes/work

Of course it fails since the password is not present (nor the -N switch)

I am aware that it should contain a password, but I do not want the app to know it. So my question is:

Is there a way to request the password like this (I am aware this is not correct):

/sbin/mount_smbfs //[user]: %keychain->[identified keychain]%@<server>/work /Volumes/work
