How to set a bluetooth device as my playback device without going to the device menu? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:12 AM PDT I have some speakers that I would like to easily connect to when I arrive home and I'm already playing something on my device. Is there a way to easily set the device, when I arrive? Probably an automation script? |
Build Chromium or Firefox with X11/Xorg and without Cocoa Posted: 19 Jun 2021 12:56 AM PDT I like to use X11 on my Mac. I know that you can run X11 Apps through Docker, but that just isn't as efficient. Is there any way to compile Firefox or Chromium with X11 support on a Mac? |

Posted: 18 Jun 2021 08:58 PM PDT I have a single 2019 16" Macbook Pro, and due to a desire to separate my work from personal projects, I have created a new APFS volume to contain my personal work. I installed macOS Big Sur on it and generally things work as expected. Both installations are the latest version of macOS Big Sur (currently 11.4). Signing into my Apple ID does not work as expected. I expect to be able to sign in to my single Apple ID on both volumes and be able to use standard Apple ID and iCloud features on both volumes, independently, more or less as if they were two separate devices (in reality it seems that Apple does understand that it is one device, I only have a single "devices list" entry). However, I am experiencing a problem where signing into the Apple ID on one volume causes the other volume, at the time it is next booted, to have a "problem" with my Apple ID. I encounter a warning message that says there was something "wrong with my Apple ID" and that I needed to "sign-in again" to fix the problem. Visiting System Preferences like the prompt asks shows the following problems: Pressing "continue" and signing in again solves the problem for the installation/volume that I am currently logged into, but the act of solving this problem here will trigger the same problem in the other volume. I have googled this problem extensively but cannot find references to my exact situation - multiple volumes/installations with the same Apple ID, with this "Apple ID problem" problem. Generally, people with this "problem with your Apple ID" message do not explicitly say that they are running multiple volumes, and that the problem can be solved either by following the prompts, deleting a corrupted keychain directory (tried that with no luck), or with a sign out -> restart -> sign out (tried that with no luck). Apple themselves seem to support this exact multiple-volume setup, so either my google-fu is lacking, or nobody has reported this problem before. Some ancillary questions:
Any suggestions on how I might proceed? |
Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:38 AM PDT I have successfully used my Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 (wired) with my Mac mini. Recently it stopped giving me anything when I asked for a capital W - which is a pain in the ass for a guy named Wayne. Now it has spread to other keys. So I switched to another keyboard (two actually- one of which was an apple keyboard) and I'll be damned if they doesn't produce the exact same errors - dead keys. How can that be? I'm not smart enough apparently. Please advise |

Audio cuts out of iMovie just before clip ends? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 03:09 PM PDT I made a quicktime video of myself speaking. I wanted to speed it up so I used a video speed changer online to do that. When I import the new clip to iMovie, however, the audio cuts out somehow near the end (~3 secs before the clip ends). I'm not sure why this is happening - is it since I used the video speed editor and iMovie doesn't support that or something else? Any help on fixing this would be appreciated, thanks. |
Ghost Swipe up iPhone X after screen replacement Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:55 AM PDT My girlfriend breaks her iPhone X at least 2 times per year, so after having spent 630€ at the Apple Store in one year I started to change her screen by myself. With today I did it 5 times, but a strange thing happened; the screen functions well but sometimes the iPhone do a "ghost swipe down" by itself. So I am asking if this is something that I can fix by myself (maybe opening and closing it again, moving the screen cables etc.) or if the problem is probably the screen that is defective. Is there an error in assembly that could result in this problem? |
Can I use Apple cups as a programmable printer API? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 03:00 AM PDT My intent is to have a "fake printer" (Appple cups) show up on the user's desktop/Chrome browser (print settings) after it's added through a server ip/port. And it's not going to deal with any printers... I want to extract the documents that would be printed and then treat them as files to then be shared with other computers (by regular file upload/download). I know it sounds backwards but the printer as a starting point is key in this particular application. This "fake printer" has to be added by Printers & scanners say through TCP/IP/port |
Mcabook Pro aluminum bottom cover bent - from battery overheating? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 06:51 PM PDT I have a Macbook Pro Early 2015, model A1502, that I opened up recently because I was worried about a wobble that I saw. I don't use this laptop as much anymore but in the past, I had noticed that it tended to overheat a lot so I was worried that there might be a problem with the battery. Before opening it, I checked the battery health and it was around 600 cycles, with a life span of 1000 cycles. After opening it, I didn't seen much swelling from the battery and figured it was fine. But when I was putting the bottom cover back on, I felt a lot of resistance/tension in the cover and figured that something was in the way of the cover and preventing it from lining up with screws grooves. Should I replace the battery or is it okay to use as is? |

Why can't I connect to local devices via VPN when IP subnet is the same between both networks? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:03 AM PDT I have a VPN server running on my home network that I can connect to fine. The local IP subnet is set to 10.0.0.1 with the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0. This works fine. When I'm on a friends network, they have the IP subnet set to the same value as mine. In this case I can connect to my VPN fine (doing an IP check online shows my home IP), but I'm unable to connect to any local device. If the friend changes their router settings to use 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, everything works perfectly (and I'm able to connect to my local devices on my home network). It almost seems like when the IP subnet is the same, there is a conflict where it will prioritize sending it to the local network instead of sending it through to my VPN connection. I have verified that all of my traffic is set to send over the VPN connection. Is there a way on macOS to fix that so that no matter the local IP DNS subnet of the network I'm connected to I'm able to access my local devices on the VPN network? |
Graphics glitch - checkered pattern in Chrome Posted: 18 Jun 2021 06:00 PM PDT I've had this MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) for a while now, but today it glitched out with huge green fields in all apps. After a reboot I see this checkered black/green glitch pattern in Google Chrome on some sites, in some "sizes". Basically if I resize the browser window the glitch goes away, but if I resize it too much it comes back. Happens both on the internal and on external display. I am hoping this is a software glitch, but I am afraid it's my graphics card. Would be very grateful if someone knows the answer. Here's the stackoverflow logo with the glitch: |
How to access older iPhone auto-backups / restore lost Safari cards? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 07:05 PM PDT Recently I've lost all my open Safari cards on my iPhone. Since i want to move my data to a new model anyway, I was just disabling wifi every time I plugged it to the charger in order to not let it auto-backup. I did not turn off the backup function, because I was too scared of the iThreat, threatening they'll delete all my iCloud files, backups, photos, etc. if i cancel anything iCloud-related. So sadly, that one time I forgot to turn off the wifi, and it did back up automatically. Since I've tried doing a computer backup many times before on many different PC's and cables, changing settings, including replacing the whole charging port, I couldn't do it, so iCloud backups are the only ones I could make. Now, as you might have guessed, the latest backup doesn't contain any of those lost 48 open cards, and the latest backup i did manually is almost half-year old. Is there any way I can get access to the older AUTOMATIC iCloud backup? If not, how do I get my cards back? They couldn't just disappear without the trace of I didn't physically press 'delete' button right?? 😰 |
Does OS X support SMB Direct (RDMA)? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 03:18 PM PDT SMB over RDMA technology was introduced in SMB 3.0, and gained broader popularity in the last couple of years. Does anyone know if I can recompile sharing or enable this on macOS? |
iPadOS Add entry to text replacement (user dictionary) from shortcuts Posted: 18 Jun 2021 07:05 PM PDT I'm using the apple pencil on Ipad and work with a lot of abbreviations. So every-time I write one, it will be replaced with whatever is the closest match in the English dictionary. I can work around that by adding the abbreviations in the user dictionary (settings - general - keyboard - text replacement). So I often find myself going to this setting to add a new abbreviation. I would like to make this a bit easier by creating a shortcut that can do it for me. So far, all I can do is a shortcut that will take me to the "text replacement" page : It's ok but I wish I could just ask for input and push this into the user dictionary all through the shortcut. Is there a way to do this? |

Security Update 2020-004: Apple Remote Desktop and Screen Sharing Not Working? Anyone else noticed? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:06 PM PDT I just installed the security update on a remote computer and can no longer access that computer via Apple Remote Desktop or Screen Sharing? Luckily I had Teamviewer as a backup... Anyone else notice/got any ideas how to fix this? I tried cycling everything on and off a few times, restarts, etc. SSH is working OK. It seems to be exclusively the security update 2020-004 that broke it...I haven't changed anything else, and it's worked all year. Another computer on the network also on 10.14.6 is working fine (since I haven't installed that update on it yet...nor will I until I can resolve this). Thanks. |

Files grayed out in Finder. Can preview them, but cannot open, move or copy them Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:06 PM PDT I don't know how they got this way. I have files with this problem in at least several directories. I found out about them today because I was trying to move a ton of directories to a new disk (Journaled to APFS) using Forklift (a file manager) and it couldn't move these files to the target volume. I don't know if Forklift caused this problem, or not. They are JPG photos. I can preview them by pressing {Space} in Finder. But I cannot open them with a double-click — nothing happens. If I right (or Ctrl-) click and choose "Open in Preview", I get an error box saying, "Item "DSC_1507.JPG" is used by macOS and can't be opened." macOS Catalina 10.15.5. Volume containing these files is formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". In the directory I'm focused on, most of the files are fine and only two have this problem. Here is the output of "ls -@BOaen" in that directory: The two troublesome files are DSC_1460.JPG and DSC_1507.JPG. As you can see, each is followed by this in that ls output:

How to edit m4b audiobook metadata in Catalina? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 02:10 AM PDT In Catalina it is not possible to edit audiobook metadata anymore as it was possible using iTunes in previous macOS versions. I tried a third-party tag editor (kid3), successfully edited the audiobook metadata, but still, when I import the audiobook into the Books app, the metadata is wrong. What could possibly be going on, is there anyway I can work around this issue? |
Using Raspberry Pi as a home hub for Apple HomKit setup Posted: 18 Jun 2021 04:07 PM PDT I'm trying to make my home a bit smarter using HomeKit without actually buying HomeKit accessories. Now I'm using python and the pyhap libary and it is working so far. I can control my Raspberry Pi using Apple HomeKit and the Home app. But there's one thing I consider a big disadvantage of HomeKit: it cannot be controlled from outside the Network without an iPad, HomePod or Apple TV working as a home hub. Question: Can I somehow turn my Raspberry Pi into a home hub so I can control my lights etc from outside my home? |
MacBook Pro: Can't change the screen brightness Posted: 18 Jun 2021 10:58 PM PDT On my MacBook Pro 2012, I can't change the screen brightness. When I click on the brightness keyboard controls, nothing happens. Under System Preferences → Displays, the Brightness slider is missing: I have also tried with an AppleScript and when I run it, I hear an error sound: Where does the problem come from? How do I adjust the brightness? |
macOS Mail: How to remove background color of a message in message list? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:13 PM PDT In MacOS Mail, we can change the background color of a message in the message list. This could happen in two ways AFAIK: (i) Select a message, go to Format -> Show Colors, then choose a color, or (ii) Setup a rule that automatically set the background color based on some conditions. The question is: once the background color is set, I can't seem to find a way to remove the background color. I can only change it to another color. This does not work well when we switch between dark mode and light mode. What I would like to do is to remove the colors all together (or equivalently, make the background transparent). Is there a way to do this? |
On iOS, how can I insert a date/time stamp while I'm writing something? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 04:55 PM PDT I often write short text documents on my iPhone, and want to insert a date stamp in the format YYYY-MM-DD. Is there a utility or other means by which I can quickly insert a date stamp instead of typing it manually each time? |
How to create a blank RTF file in AppleScript? Posted: 18 Jun 2021 07:32 PM PDT I want to be able to create a new TextEdit document with an AppleScript file. The AppleScript file will then be triggered by a system-wide keyboard shortcut via FastScripts. Specifically, I want the AppleScript to:
Here is what I have: That's where I am, at this point. I'm not sure how exactly to approach the rest. I could create a new TextEdit document within TextEdit itself, and then save the file with the custom filename. Or I could create the RTF file outside of TextEdit, and then open the file with TextEdit. Similarly, the AppleScript can either insert the blank line by keystroke after the file is opened, or the AppleScript can actually write the line to the file when the file is created. And I have no idea how to set the preset font size for a specific document in AppleScript (without changing the application-wide default font size), or if it is even possible. |
