I can’t figure out how to use 4 snippets in Cipmenu shortcuts on Big Sur

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 06:37 AM PDT

I'd like to know how to use shortcuts to copy and paste any 1 of my 4 snippets on macOS Big Sur.

I have the most current version of ClipMenu that I'm aware of and not sure what number version that is.

Is there a guide on this?

Volume keeps returning to zero in GarageBand

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 04:46 AM PDT

I am editing a podcast in GarageBand. Strangely the volume automatically drops to zero in one segment of a track whenever I do anything. Completely baffled - every time I reset the volume it drops back to zero.

Any help appreciated!

Allowing apps to access specified contacts

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 04:43 AM PDT

iOS has a feature of allowing only photos you select to be accessible from an app instead of allowing all photos.

Is there a similar feature where I can specify which contacts should be available to an app instead of sharing all of my contact list?

Fresh Start with SSD

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 06:29 AM PDT

Looking for advice on the best way to reformat my SSD and start all over with my Mac.

I've got an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) whose operating system has been upgraded every year for about five years. For the past several months, I've been seeing crashes on shutdown, error messages on startup that say "the Mac shut down because of a problem" even though it seemed to shut down fine, disk errors when running Disk Utility in Recovery mode, occasional random crashes (not many), etc.

There's been no data loss so far but it feels like it's time for a fresh start. I'm aware these could be signs of impending drive failure but I would like to reformat the drive and see if it clears things up before I go the route of buying new hardware.

From what I've read, I'm considering creating a bootable USB installer and then wiping the internal drive clean with it. Hopefully I can "fix" any bad sectors by writing to every block?

Any advice on the best way to do this would be appreciated—as would any advice on other strategies to address these problems. Thanks in advance.

How does the hardware know the restart? [closed]

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 04:58 AM PDT

A Mac can be switched off via the software. But switching on the hardware cannot be done if the software is not running.

How can a Mac restart when it is switched off? Somebody else has to do that or am I confused? Who turns the Mac back on when it's off?

If this is a stupid question please forgive me.

Can't import facetime live photos to windows 10

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 03:07 AM PDT

I have an iphone xs max (up to date, ios 14.6) and I'm trying to import photos taken during a facetime call to my PC running windows 10.

using the photos app on windows 10, i can import photos and videos fine, and live photos taken with the camera will give me a jpeg and mp4. the importing process seems to go through the selected photos fine until it reaches a facetime photo, where it will import the still and fail when trying to import the mp4. the import process then terminates, leaving me with whatever photos imported up until that point.

ive tried navigating the phone's storage in file explorer (This PC\Apple iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM) and manually copying the mp4, but the copied file ends up 0kb in size despite showing a file size on the original copy.

i dont want to use a cloud service as my upload speed is terrible and it would take much too long.

i cant find any results on google even remotely similar to my issue, and i couldnt get much help asking on the apple forums unfortunately

How to turn off the alarm on an iPhone XR without looking at the screen?

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 03:18 AM PDT

When the alarm rings on the iPhone, I have to pick up the phone and hit Stop on the screen. Pressing the volume buttons and the power button don't turn off the alarm but just snooze it. Is there a way to stop the alarm while snooze is active?

Copy music library from Big Sur to Windows10

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 05:11 AM PDT

Recently I had to copy my music library on Big Sur to Windows10. It seems iTunes on Win10 only supports the import of .itl and .xml so it doesn't go well:

  1. Big Sur uses a .musiclibrary instead of .itl, so I can't export/import the library via .itl file;
  2. I exported .xml on Big Sur and imported it on Win10. iTunes on Win10 says "some songs in the playlist were not imported because they could not be found". Then nearly all songs got imported but all of them CAN'T be played, they all have a radio icon on the left.

I can open WindowsExplorer and just double click the mp3 file to play any song on this drive using iTunes, so it's not the drive/file access problem.

And I've tried to rename the folder name to broke the link, but suprisingly I can still open the property window without seeing any warning

  1. Can Home sharing be used to duplicate the library? iCloud? Any 3rd-party backup software that supports both Big Sur and Win10?

Just wonder if anyone can help me with this. Thanks in advance!

How to list top 10 process/services in terminal

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 02:15 AM PDT

I'm trying to run a command every 5 min to check the top 10 services/process that are using more CPU.

I would like to run the script and save the result in a file and after 5 min add the new result in the same document.

I would like to be able to see: CPU, Memory, Disk, Network if it's possible.

I have tried top -R -u -s 10 but this doesn't contain all the information I need.

suddenly all special characters like `control`, `option` and `command` have disappeared from menus

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 12:42 AM PDT

OK this is weird, suddenly all special characters have disappeared from all my menus on all my applications. Anyone have any clues on this? Trying to think of anything I've done recently. This is MacOS Big Sur 11.3.1.

One thing I did do recently is disable SIP due to some Golang unit testing stuff, but I don't really think that would be the problem. enter image description here

--- UPDATE ---

So, restarting/installing 11.4 solved this. I don't want to make this an accepted answer however because, well, a) I don't know why it happened and b) an upgrade isn't always available. It would be preferable to actually know how to solve without an upgrade, i.e was it a permissions issue, did something get deleted, etc.

Does a Installer Package guarantee that all files are tracked?

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 02:32 AM PDT

I know about <command> <l>, pkgutil --files, and lsbom. I know also that installer packages are really a XAR archive.

What I do not know yet, is that whether running a .pkg installer packages guarantees that all the files produced as a result of running it will be tracked?

For instance, when a .pkg installer package ran some arbitrary scripts, will the files be tracked by macOS? I tried searching and there does not seems to be any official documentation on this.

Some unofficial guides:

https://matthew-brett.github.io/docosx/flat_packages.html

http://s.sudre.free.fr/Stuff/Ivanhoe/FLAT.html

Although not explicitly mentioned, these guides seems to be indicating that the files won't be tracked, is this correct?

Also, are there any official answer on this?

No file systems that can be activated?

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 05:10 AM PDT

I have a problem when trying to open disk images I keep getting the message that there are no file systems that can be activated, although the DMG file is recognized without any problems on other Macs. macOS 11.2.3

I tried to repair the DMG file even if it works on other machines.

enter image description here

hdiutil attach /path/to/dmg -nomount -noverify -noautofsck and then with fsck_hfs -y the HFS Partition

In addition, my Mac no longer recognizes removable media. However, the Disk Utility. The hard drive is displayed there but not in any other location.

enter image description here

When deleting independently of the hard drive, I get the message:

enter image description here

An internal error occurred:(-69624)

When deleting independently of the hard drive with the Terminal I get the message:

enter image description here

Error: -69888: Couldn't unmount disk

When I open the DMG with the Terminal:

enter image description here

hdiutil: attach failed - No file systems that can be activated

When I create a DMG with the Terminal:

hdiutil: Build failed - RPC version is invalid

hdiutil: Build failed - RPC version is invalid

When I create a DMG using Disk Utility:

enter image description here

Operation failed with status 73: RPC version is invalid

17.06.2021

Meanwhile I manage to open the images with the DiskImageMounter However, creating the DMG does not work with either the Terminal or the Disk Utility Opening with the Terminal does not. In addition, at the same time, I can no longer use removable media as a Volume. They are shown as devices but not as Volumes. Unfortunately, deleting removable media does not work either. Changing the user didn't help either.

Older MacBook Pro doesn't see new modern Bluetooth speaker, why not?

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 04:01 AM PDT

MacBook Pro Mid 2012 readily connects to all my modern Bluetooth devices except it doesn't see my new Sony SRS XB43 speaker.

I turn off any devices that my MBP tries to connect to so only the Sony speaker is available with its Bluetooth light blinking to indicate attempting to pair, but it has never shown up on the MBP Bluetooth list.

The speaker readily connects to my iPhone 6 Plus.

From the Sony specs page:

Is there a way to manually enter the device address of the speaker to my MBP?

I have restarted MBP, debug Bluetooth on MBP to reset module, restarted again, turned speaker off and on etc.

Is the MBP so old now it cant see modern Bluetooth devices? I havent been able to test this idea yet with a modern Mac to see if it can discover the speaker.

Any help much appreciated thank you

2015 MacBook Air: Internal SSD Is Locked and Can't erase/update

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 05:34 AM PDT

Have Early 2015 11" MacBook Air, with original 128GB SSD installed. Running High Sierra 10.13.6 Filevault has never been on.

Computer crashed, and upon reboot, progress bar gets about 3/4 of the way through, and then screen just goes dark.

Am able to boot into all the various recovery modes, but in none of them is DiskUtility able to reformat the internal SSD drive, as it is showing as not writable. I created a boot USB with High Sierra 10.13.6, and can see the internal SSD drive and copy files off the drive, but it is not writable.

Any idea what's going on, and what else I can try?

Adjust path for iTunes / Music files after files move

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 12:07 AM PDT

I moved all my music library to a network drive. So now all my library is messed up as Music (former iTunes) can not find the files. I have to manually set the path for each file I want to play (~3500) files. I tried to grep -r '/Volumes/S_Drive/Music/Music/' to see which file I could replace the paths in my home but it came up with nothing. So guess the music library is saved somewhere else. I would like to run this in one step instead of having to adjust paths manually every time. Cheers, EL

Menu Bar Display icon has disappeared from the macOS Menu Bar

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 05:26 AM PDT

The Display icon has disappeared from my Menu Bar and I cannot figure out how to get it back.

The ability to add it to the toolbar has disappeared from System Preferences > Displays

enter image description here

I found an excellent article that contained instructions on how to add it back in this scenario:

For one reason or another, some menulet options remain hidden in System Preferences by default. Interested users can find the full collection in the System folder: Open a Finder window, from the menu bar select Go -> Go to Folder..., and then navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras.

Some of the extras in this folder are pretty obscure, but one or two might come in handy – like Eject if you use an optical drive, or Ink if you connect a graphics tablet to your Mac, for example. Just double-click any that look useful and they'll be added to the menu bar. They can be removed just as easily using the Command (⌘) key method described above.

When I try this method, the Display icon does indeed show up on the Menu Bar again...

However, when I try to click it, it immediately disappears.

(MBP 2010 13") EFI BOOT Frozen when Trying to Install Windows 10

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 12:24 AM PDT

Would like to get some assistance: Device: Macbook Pro 2010 13"

Previously I was successfully install windows by manually create partition, format partition to hybrid GPT/MBR by following a guide. And windows working fine, everything normal until one day I am thinking about install linux so I can have complete 3 OS on mac. And I just carelessly install it and linux installation failed, microsoft partition got affected and OS gone. So I delete partition and now MacOs own fully the disk and partition.

The issue now, I am trying to install windows again and its all working until EFI boot on flashdisk done. When turn on mac and hold option button and the "EFI BOOT" appear as installing windows. When we click or press enter, thats it. Its freezing for a moment and will reboot again.

Anyone can help to advise on what to do? I have tried to repair disk on MacOs recovery. But nothing seems work. If anyone have solution or advise I will be open. Thank you in advance.

Instruction I followed previously which was successfully installed windows without bootcamp: https://bit.ly/2JiffBl

I wish Mr David Anderson >> https://apple.meta.stackexchange.com/users/107222/david-anderson can have a look as well and advise what to do as previously I followed his instruction and all is well until I am carelessly tried to install linux without further research.

Will clean install High Sierra OS fix the issue??

Thunderbolt 1 to USB Type C adapter?

displays - drive displays from USB-C hub

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 12:37 AM PDT

Is it possible to drive a monitor from a hub? If the hub was Thunderbolt 3 compatible and I used a USB-C to HDMI adapter, from the hub to the monitor, would this work? The monitor in question is a Full HD (1080p@60Hz) monitor - nothing crazy.

I ask this question as I'm currently looking at a USB-C to 3 HDMI adapter however the price is pretty high - and I'm looking for a workaround. It seems that individual USB-C to HDMI cables are a lot cheaper.

Track volume keeps resetting itself

Posted: 17 Jun 2021 02:53 AM PDT

I'm using garageband, and I am trying to lower the volume of one track. I adjust the volume slider to where I want it (-13.8 db) , but when I start playing the song, the volume slider for that track instantly resets itself back to a much higher volume (+1.8 db).

If I adjust the volume while the song is playing, it works, until I restart. If I start the song from anywhere but the very beginning, it plays at this right volume. If I start it from the beginning, it plays with the higher volume. I'm so confused as to why this is happening. I'm using volume automation to fade out at the very end, but it's flat until then, so I don't know why it would cause this. (Yes, the line in the automation is where I want it).

Any ideas?

Here is a video of the issue in case my description was unclear.

Icons remains the same after I have changed the default program for opening the file

I have just uninstalled a program from my new mac. The program was making itself default to open all .r files. I installed a new program, and I maked it default for opening .r files, but the old icon of the files remains. The icon of the old program is stil at every .r-files.

How can I update the icons of the .r-files, so they view the icons of the new program? And why do this icon still exist at my mac, can I remove the icon of the old program?

For example, if I had four Terminal windows (and I didn't have something cool like iTerm to do this for me), I'd like to be able to set each one to 1/2 screen height and 1/2 screen width, and people to position them via x, y coordinates so that they took up the entire screen, and exactly one fourth of them individually.

Can this be done using applescript?
