Windows 7 on MacBook Pro installed successfully but restarts with a white screen Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:57 PM PST I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2009. Unfortunately, I erased my internal drive which led me to OS X Utilities only. When i clicked on reinstall OS X, it asked me to sign into my Apple ID. But it ended with a popup, "This item is temporarily unavailable." So I tried installing Windows 7 on that dead MacBook. I created a bootable usb, plugged it, pressed the power button with holding option key, selected my bootable usb(EFI Boot). After that, i saw an installation screen of Windows 7. All the process went good. I selected my internal Drive to install Windows. At last, i saw a popup, "Restarts in 10 seconds". But after the restart my MacBook turned on with a blank white screen only. Anyone please help me to get rid of this problem. |
How do I make my display automatically mirror my mac's screen? Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:06 PM PST (I actually have a capture card, but capture cards are essentially virtual monitors.) I'm trying to mirror my mac on a "display" so I can record it for further reference. I noticed in settings (display) that when you link up the monitor, you have an option to either mirror your main screen (essentially your macbook's POV), or use it as an external monitor. By default, macOS thinks you want to use the display as an external monitor so you'd have to change it. When I do change it, it remembers my decision for that one monitor. When I boot into recovery mode, the monitor is treated as a secondary monitor. How do I make it so my macbook treats the external monitor as the primary monitor (or at least mirrors it), so that recovery mode window appears on the external monitor instead of the laptop screen; or other interfaces appear on the external monitor. An example being the first time macOS setup screen/user setup which I have tested on OBS to capture the display and only shows the blurry macos monterey screen. I can also move my mouse cursor to the right onto the external screen. Significance? - Your laptop screen is broken. |
Moving Virtual Memory (VM) partition from SSD to HDD - macOS Catalina Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:04 PM PST Currently my MacOS Catalina is installed onto my SSD. I have 128GB SSD and 3TB HDD. Half space of the SSD and large part of the HDD will be used for Linux that I am going to install. For MacOS I have around 60GB available on SSD and around 1.2TB on HDD. I am looking for the best way (or all possible ways) to make my MacOS saving content of my VM partition (kernelcore, sleepimage and swap files) on my HDD. I am looking for a way to either:
My disks list: I found similar question here, however I can't make it working with the "UPDATE: Simpler method". I can't mount anything by using the fstab - when I did as it was described in the question from the link, my disk appears as unmounted and can't be mounted due to an error (Error com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter: 49218). Also I can't unmount the original VM disk: With sudo prefix, it just freezes the terminal. Also mounting a volume didn't work when I tried: I also tried to mount to /private/var/vm with the same result. Volume is not locked - when I tried unlockVolume. At the end I can add that when I eddied fstab by adding this line: it still mounted to /private/var/vm. |
Disk Utility with extra Mac HD after clean install on Monterey (formerly Big Sur) Posted: 06 Feb 2022 08:52 PM PST Not sure if I need to re-format and re-install again. Is it normal to see so many Mac HD, and should I try to remove the extra ones? Had some HD issue where somehow there was no space left and thus there was nothing to do but to clean install everything. Now it seems there are multiple Mac HD / Mac HD - Data, with different avail space, as shown: |
Mac in endless loop of keychain prompts Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:59 PM PST this has occurred a couple of times in the last week. The Mac (Monterey 12.1) will unexpectedly prompt for the local keychain password for a process. Whether I hit ESC or enter the password and continue it then immediately prompts again, but for a different process. This goes on and one and on, each time a different process as if something is looping through all the running processes and prompting for the local keychain password for each one. Anyone got any idea what's going on and how to stop it? |
Record Internal Audio on iPad Pro while listening on Bluetooth Headphones Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:59 PM PST I am a student who is enrolled in a Zoom lecture. I watch my lecture on my Macbook Pro. The problem is that I record my lectures on Notability, and due to my class schedule I have to listen to my lectures on headphones as I can't make it home between classes. Notability records the audio that normally would come out of my speakers, so when I'm listening on my headphones, the recording feature is useless. I followed the steps for this solution I found on reddit (link) but I can't seem to get it working - my iPad doesn't recognize the internal audio. I have two of the Sabrent dongles and a TRRS cable. I also downloaded loopback and would appreciate any help with that as well, as I understand that is an alternative. If someone could offer help on how to configure it so I could also record internal audio from web browsers, not just zoom, that would be great, as I my professor posts youtube videos for us to watch before lecture that I take notes on. Basically, I need to route audio from my MacBook Pro to my iPad Pro so that it can record in Notability while simultaneously listening to the audio. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

MacBook Pro mid-2012 freezes or crashes when external monitor is plugged in Posted: 06 Feb 2022 05:02 PM PST I have a MBP mid-2012 (pre-Retina) running Mojave or High Sierra. I use the latest version of SwitchResX to handle the external monitor rarer resolution of 1440x900, surely not too many pixels for the older Intel graphics chip. Video adapter is a Thunderbolt 1-to-VGA. Previously, I used a DisplayLink USB3-based video adapter to light the second monitor (legacy from a slightly older MBP with a burnt Thunderbolt chip) with few issues, except the ginormous CPU consumption that made it impossible to use said adapter for anything else than text or short animations, the single reason why I want to revert to the Thunderbolt adapter. USB3 was never made for streaming video data, no matter how good the compression and algorithms. Problem: Every time I try to connect the external monitor in Mojave, the OS freezes with a short delay. However, briefly before freezing, SwitchResX does acknowledge the external monitor presence, albeit at an extremely low resolution of 800x600. If external monitor is plugged in before boot, boot doesn't proceed. Already tried:
Not tried: Full OS reinstall. While it would be pretty radical, it is extremely time-consuming and may or may not yield results What could be happening here? |

Possible to create a blockquote in Apple Notes? Posted: 06 Feb 2022 04:06 PM PST I'm using Apple Notes for lots of things lately (especially after discovering the Safari note taking workflow described here). Often I want to indicate a section is a quote, much like I can with Markdown, here in Stack Exchange, in GitHub, Slack, etc.
Is there any way to do a blockquote in Apple Notes? |
What version of Apple TV is required for a HomePod mini stereo pair to work? Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:06 PM PST I have two HomePod minis configured as a stereo pair, that is not recognized by my Apple TV. Instead I see each individual HomePod in the audio settings for the TV and can only select and play through one at a time. I have a very old Apple TV (a replacement is on order) and also a very old AirPort Extreme Base Station (also about to be replaced). What version of Apple TV is required for a HomePod mini stereo pair to work? |

How to show open tabs on other devices on Mac Safari? Posted: 06 Feb 2022 09:02 PM PST I want to show open tabs on other devices that share the same Apple and iCloud account, but for some reasons there is no open tab on Mac Safari when I click the top-right icon (the icon of two tabs overriding). On my iPhone and iPad I can access the tabs opened on my Mac, but the other direction is not true. How can I open the tabs opened on iOS devices on Mac or maybe is it just a bug? UPDATEI found out that sometimes the tabs appear properly whereas other times they don't. UPDATE 2This might be a bug, but I think 60~80% of the time the tabs don't appear. I upgraded to macOS 11.1 but the problem still persists. Any workaround would be appreciated. |
Posted: 06 Feb 2022 03:00 PM PST I've created a custom keyboard shortcut for the "Show In Playlist" command in the Music app. When I use the shortcut, I can see the menu bar is selected, but it does not open a menu showing the playlists. I am aware this is possible by right/cmd-clicking on a song in the library, but this is a tedious process for a large library. Thanks! |
MacBook Pro 16 2019 + External Monitor. Battery Life Posted: 06 Feb 2022 08:06 PM PST I've recently bought a MBP Pro 16' 2019. I'm using right now a Thunderbolt 2 adapter so I can connect it to an old iMac 21' and using as an external monitor. My question is: It is safe for battery life keep it connected all the time? Right now, I'm only working from Home (Pandemic) and I'm afraid of leaving it at power source all the time. I don't mind when it hits 80% of battery charge, unplug and plug again when it's 30%. But just to clarify if it's correct. Also, I'm planning on buying an LG Monitor with Thunderbolt 3, that has an 85W plug connector to provide energy to the MBP. Should I use it? The official charger is 96W. |
How can I highlight text on a screenshot using Markup in macOS? Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:28 PM PST When I take a screenshot in macOS Mojave, I get a handy screen with Markup tools to edit the screenshot. But I've never been able to get the "highlight" feature to work. I want to highlight text on a page in yellow, similar to a highlighter pen. It looks like it should do it, but the highlighter tool is always disabled. Nothing I do seems to enable it. Does this tool work? How can I use it? |
Migration Assistant not recognizing ethernet Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:55 PM PST I am currently migrating from a MacBookPro to a desktop. The desktop is running Sierra and the MacBookPro is running Yosemite. The desktop is a late 2013 (I think) and the MacBookPro I'm not sure. (I think it's 2010 perhaps. can't check because it is currently migrating). Anyhow, they both have Ethernet ports and I have successfully plugged in an Ethernet cable between them. (complicated task, I know) However when I use How can I get Migration Assistant to use the Ethernet connection? |
