How to use new magic keyboard with MBP 2019 16inch?

On the official website, it doesn't say that the new Magic Keyboard (with fingerprint) is compatible with the MBP 2019 16inch model.

But is there a way to make it compatible?

This on a 2017 iMac currently running Big Sur. However, the problem has persisted since at least Mojave.

Periodically, the following dialog appears:

Clicking on the "?" reveals nothing interesting. I can find nothing revealing in the system.log. Clicking either Deny or Allow dismisses the dialog until the next time but seems to have no effect on whatever is running on the machine. I've never clicked on Always Allow. Note that my WiFi SSID is "mgn".

Any ideas on how I can identify the process that is asking for keychain access?

iPhone VS iPad sound?

About 3 years ago I got a Bose QC35 and an iPhone 7 at same time. Listen to my music was a new experience then, mostly because of Bose I think. Before I used an iPhone 3GS with the earphone that came with it. I also used 2015 MBP and iPad Air 2.

Last year I got the earpods and this year an iPhone 12 mini. With all these I tend to stick to the old iPad Air 2 with Bose headphones which sounds better for me. Is it just me? Is there something on iPad which might make it sound different/better than newer iPhone?

I listen to music on apple music only.

Is there a way to export aliases in macOS in the Korn Shell (ksh)?

Earlier versions of the Korn shell (ksh) allowed aliases to be exported to subshells by using the -x option, for example:

alias -x dog=cat

With the current version of macOS the ksh man page says:

"The obsolete -x option has no effect."

Is there an alternate way to export aliases in macOS in ksh without putting them in .kshrc?

How Many Unique Audio Channels Are Supported In Spatial Audio?

I hear the term Dolby Atmos mixed with Spatial Audio. Dolby Atmos has 7.2 channels I think. Does that mean Spatial Audio has 7.2 channels?

How Could I Delete Downloaded Default Wallpapers?

I've downloaded some of the optional wallpapers in the settings panel and I can't find the option to delete them. They're 100MB HEIC files so I'd rather them not sit on my drive being unused. How could I delete them? I've downloaded the Big Sur and Catalina wallpapers.

Remove the duplicate password warning

I'm going through all my Safari passwords and updating the ones that Apple is warning me are no good for one reason or another. About half of the warnings are not accurate because Apple is warning me that I am using the password multiple times for different websites, but those websites all use the same account. The passwords must be the same.

I'd like some help accomplishing any one of the following:

  1. Merge or group the two (or more) websites in Safari so that they show up as rightfully sharing the password.
  2. Disabling the warning about duplicate password use. Either for specific sites or entirely.

Why might only some of my iPhone photos be backed up to iCloud?

I used Image Capture on my Mac to pull photos from my iPhone. There are 1000 photos on my iPhone, Image Capture pulled 600 of them, and the remaining 400 are on iCloud. I have the upload to iCloud option selected on my iPhone.

Why would some of them be on iCloud and some not?

Why the Preview app in macOS Monterey shows only the metadata rather than the actual content of media files?

Previously in macOS Big Sur pressing the space bar on an image/video file, Preview.app shows the preview of the media content (image content / play video), but now in macOS Monterey (version 12.0.1 (21A559)) it shows the thumbnail of the media file, its name, size and last modified timestamp. Why is that? Is this happening for everyone or I have something off in my system? I recently updated my macOS from Big Sur to Monterey.

Find images from folder B missing in folder A

I am paranoid about losing data. When backing up my photos, I will move the memory card contents to my hard drive, then start to copy groups files into a different folders sort of like:

  • A
    • Monday's Photos
    • Tuesday's Photos
      • Zoo
      • Park
    • Wednesday's Photos
      • Family
        • Wedding
        • After Party
  • B
    • Memory Card 1
    • Memory Card 2
    • Memory Card 3
    • Memory Card 4

After I think I am done copying files from the memory card folders, I'd like to see a list of all the files throughout all the folders in B, which are missing anywhere in the A hierarchy. I've looked into duplicate finders like Gemini which work great for what they do, but I want to do sort of the opposite, ignore the duplicates and only show me what is missing. I also tried Beyond Compare but if that can work, I couldn't figure out how to have it search all folders in the hierarchy.

Changing text via a Services-based Perl shell scripts in Shortcuts on macOS 12 Monterey

I have a handful of Automator actions that I'm trying to port to Shortcuts. One of them works like this:

  1. I select some text in an app.
  2. I right-click the selected text and select Services → Prefix With Arrows.
  3. The text now has > on the left edge of every line (I use this to quickly blockquote Markdown text).

All this is handled, at its core, with a short Perl script:

I've made a new Shortcut, called Stick Arrows In Front, that attempts to replicate the functionality without success. The Perl code is exactly the same. Here's what the rest of it looks like:

However, when I run my Shortcut while having text selected, the text doesn't change at all.

Am I doing anything wrong, and/or should I file a Radar?

Can 2021 MacBook Pro be permanently set to have display brightness of 1000 nits?

It was promising to hear that the new MacBook Pros have a display brightness of 1000 nits (peak brightness of 1600 nits):

However, a more recent review of the laptops said:

but it's not quite what you think, the display mostly runs at a max of 500 nits ... allows it to hit that 1600 nits brightness, but only when you're viewing HDR content, the rest of the system is the same as ever 500 nits

Question

Can the new MacBook Pros be somehow forced to stay at 1000 nits all the time? That is, is there a way to force a higher-than-500-nits brightness on all content (not just HDR content)?

How can I make my Mac automatically switch to a new speaker when it is connected, and back to my internal speakers after it's disconnected?

For some reason, when I connect my Sony Bluetooth speaker to my Mac, my Mac usually does not automatically set this Bluetooth speaker as my audio output device. Audio continues playing from my internal speakers until I manually click the audio icon in the menu bar and set "SRS-XB12" as my output device.

Furthermore, when I disconnect this speaker, my Mac sets the audio output device to my USB Microphone, rather than back to my internal speakers.

When I connect my Bluetooth speaker, I want my Mac to automatically start playing audio from that speaker. When I disconnect my speaker, I want it to play audio from the internal speakers. How can I make that happen?

Do I have to learn and use Apple's language if I want to make "App Store" apps for iDevices and Macs?

Let's say I have made something in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and I currently have it running in NW.js, the Chromium-based "webview" which runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Now I want to actually make money, and not just have people theoretically find it and jump through hoops to make it run.

That means it has to go into the Apple "App Store", and be usable on iPhones. And I have to buy the cheapest possible Mac Mini as well as a developer fee to be able to submit it to the App Store. (I already have registered an "Apple ID" account.)

It appears as if Apple heavily suggests that you use Xcode and Objective C or Swift. I obviously would like to skip that part. In fact, if it's a requirement, I might as well forget about this whole thing.

Is it a requirement? Or am I allowed to use what I already know, meaning "web technologies"? And if I'm allowed to, does it come with some kind of punishment/downside? Will my app be labeled as "lesser", and/or will it run poorly on iPhones and in practice force me to learn and use Apple's language/environment after all?

Default app window you land on when cmd+tab between apps on multiple monitor setup

I have a question regarding tab switching on MacOS.

Basically, I have a main monitor connected to my macbook, which I use for work and my macbook screen is used primarily for playing media in a browser.

The problem I'm having is whenever I switch Apps, say Terminal -> Chrome, MacOS arbitrarily picks one Chrome window (which more often than not is the one playing media on my laptop screen), and switches to that, making me accidentally refresh my media webpage. I'm basically never touching the media browser window, but even then doing the swich from focus on main screen browser window -> CMD + TAB to terminal on main screen -> CMD + TAB back to chrome, seems to focus on the laptop screen, even though that one was never really focused before.

Hope the explanation makes sense and someone can help!

Set Terminal tab name automatically?

If I connect to one of my Pi using ssh ssh pi@MilliwaysPi4.local

This sets the macOS terminal tab title to "pi@MilliwaysPi4"

If I connect to one of my Macs using ssh ssh ian@Zaphod.local
The macOS terminal tab title remains at its default.

I can then manually set using the following:-
echo -en "\033]1; $(hostname) \007"

This sets the macOS terminal tab title to "Zaphod.local"

Is there any way to get macOS to automatically set the title?
Is there a ssh setting which would facilitate this behaviour?

I have tried many options;
Including echo -en "\033]1; $(hostname) \007" after ssh does not work, as any subsequent commands do not run on the host.

Including echo -en "\033]1; $(hostname) \007" before ssh sets the Title to the host on the host.

I could hard code the Title into a script before ssh which does work, but often I use IP Address rather than a HOSTNAME so this is not generic.

Apparently something happens when sshing to Linux which sets the title, but not when sshing to macOS. Ideally I would like to discover what this is.

The Linux .bashrc contains

although frankly this is inscrutable.

Thunderbolt monitor running at 30Hz when second monitor connected

I have a macbook pro (15 inch, 2018, Radeon Pro 560X) to which I plug 2 external monitors: a LG 32UL950 4K over thunderbolt & an old ASUS full HD over HDMI. The problem is when the ASUS is connected then the LG is only running at 30Hz. enter image description here

This machine is supposed to support 4 4K@60Hz screens. Any idea how to fix this? (I can't confirm it but I think this issue started with one of the latest macOS updates, 11.3 or 11.4)

If my iCloud storage is full, does Reminders and Contacts still sync?

I bought a new Macbook Air and my 5 GB free iCloud account is filling up quickly. Does Reminders and Contacts still sync even if I used up all my iCloud? If yes, what if I add photos to my 100's of task in reminders, will it still sync?

TouchID not filling passwords on Safari and just showing passwords stored inside Safari, not Keychain

I am using BigSur for the first time today, after unboxing a new iMac M1.

I migrated all my stuff from an old iMac with Catalina, to this one, using a time machine backup.

The new machine is working well but everything related to passwords is a mess.

I have been using macOS for 15 years. I have billions of passwords for websites on keychain.

Now, on this new machine, when I visit a site that requires username/password, the field username appears filled but when I click on the password field, I am offered the option to unlock the passwords using touchID. This feature fails 100% of the time. If instead of using TouchID I type my mac password I see only the passwords stored inside safari, not those on Keychain. But the keychain passwords are there.

Any way to make this work as before?

Macbook air M1 - Repeated kernel panics because of display/external hub

I've used my Macbook air M1 for about three month and already got about 15+ crashes/reboots. Whenever this happened, I hadn't been doing anything special, nothing that was related to any installed software.

I have noticed that other people are describing similar problems online, but I am not an expert, and I am very scared that these crashes might damage my computer in a permanent way.

All in all my questions are:

Q1. Is my computer at risk of death? I can stand these reboots, even if they irritate me, but I cant afford it to suddenly be permanently fried.

Q2. Is the problem software or hardware?

Q3. More specifically, what is the problem?

Q4. Is there something I can do?

I am quite sure that the problem is related, even caused, by the interaction between my computer and my monitor (or the external hub to which it is attached). I have tried different monitors and the problem keeps coming (even though less frequently with a more recent monitor).

Update: Since I installed the beta of Monterey the problem has completely been solved.

Attach unique attachment to email using apple script to send email to different users

I'm new to apple script:

Does anyone have an example of using an AppleScript to send individual emails with unique attachments for each email using an excel list? (Lots of examples out there sending emails with an attachment, but no one seems to have done it with different attachments for each mail???)

Basically I have an email list in excel which holds all email addresses and file names

and

a Folder with each excel file in it.

I want to send the email to user in email list and attach file to email and on a loop until complete. Each person should receive the same email but will have different file attached.

Can someone provide example please?

I followed the two answers from Dell Color Laser 1320c with Mac OS 10.15 Catalina: Filter failed including removing and re-adding the printer. These were very helpful - thank you! By using the FX Docuprint C525 A-AP v3.2 Driver software I can now print via the manual feed but not the paper tray.

In the print dialogue screen I did not see all the content from the previous post: enter image description here

Maybe I'm missing something in this Layout step? Maybe I need to be in "Admin" mode or something?

No matter the choice output only prints via the manual feed.

In the print job Presets from Pages I see that the Fuji Xerox is set for the alternate paper source. Maybe if this could be changed I'd be in business?

How can I override the default "Work" travel time start location in Calendar.app on macOS?

I have both my work and home locations on my contacts card in Contacts. However, I'm working from home now far more than I used to. My work hours have remained the same however, so most of my calendar events during the day need to start from home rather than work.

Calendar.app defaults to using the "Start of Day" and "End of Day" to determine your location (or a previous event within the 3 hours preceding). This means that any events during the day always default to give my travel time from my work location, not my home location. I've noticed this even includes holidays - eg. tomorrow is Labor Day in the USA, I'll be home, but Calendar is setting Work as the start location, and not letting me override it.

How can I override that start location with one that I set?

I know I can go into the event and edit it on my phone using the iOS calendar, but that seems a little clunky when I'm at my computer I want to use the computer.

Using an sd card for extra space on bootcamp

I finally got bootcamp working on my Mac so I could play windows steam games on it. The only problem is that I don't have enough storage on bootcamp to download games from steam and I ran out of space on my Mac to put more space on bootcamp. I bought a 64 gb sd card to fix this, but I can't figure out how to actually store the sd card storage on my mac. I converted the sd card to an external drive but that still didn't solve it because I can only partition the sd card and I can't add it to my mac's storage. I also can't add the external drive to my bootcamp storage, and whenever I try to use it on bootcamp (like installing steam on it or installing steam games) it won't work. Is there any way to just add the external drive to my main Mac storage or to the bootcamp storage?

Sorry for the long rant it's really frustrating me lol any help at all would be really appreciated!!

I am trying to install Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro 15-inch 2019, (macOS Catalina 10.15.5) using Boot Camp. I have two different Win10 ISO files. They both gives me this error:

Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.

I have seen some "fixes" online, but none of them has been working for me. I have tried the following:

  1. Re-run Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Windows partition and restore the full Mac HD as a single partition.
  2. Run a PRAM reset (restart, while screen is still black, hold down ⌘+Option+P+R and keep them pressed until you hear the startup sound a second time).
  3. Open disk utility and repair permissions on the Macintosh HD partition. TWICE.
  4. Start Boot Camp Assistant again.

Any tips?

Can Adobe Photoshop Elements 2020 app in the App store construct and print multi month wall calendars?

I have an iMac ( 2017 ) running Catalina 10.15. A year and half ago when I was running Mojave I purchased Adobe photoshop Elements 2019 directly from Adobe . The program was very glitchy but did function after a fashion.

When I upgraded to Catalina, Elements got even worse and the only solution Adobe wanted to offer was to get me to pay more money and then to continue to do so. When I bought Elements 2019 it was not available in the App store and now it is.

My question is this: is the ability to design and print the multipage wall calendars that are part of the Adobe purchased app, still available in the App store version?

Using an iMac as a display for PC laptop in dual mointor configuration

My goal is to have two large monitors for my PC laptop without having to purchase new monitors. My current setup is a late 2013 27" iMac with a 27" Thunderbolt Display. For work I was given a Lenovo T480 which has a Thunderbolt 3 port on it.

I want to know if I'll be able to use my iMac in Target Display Mode as one Monitor, plus my Thunderbolt Display as the second monitor? I can use the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter from the laptop to the iMac, but will it recognize the Thunderbolt Display as the second one? It's about $100 of cables and adapters to try this so I wanted to ask first.

Anyone tried this?
