Why does Number function STOCKH and STOCK give different results?

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 12:09 AM PDT

Why do these 2 functions give different results?

STOCK(BTC-USD,previous close)

Result: 44452.7030

STOCKH(BTC-USD,close,"Aug 7, 2021")

Result: 44555.8008

Both done on August 8.

Are they using different closing times? UTC 0 is what I think they should use.

Time Machine requires huge amount of storage

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 10:31 PM PDT

So I have a MBP 16' with 1TB SSD running Big Sur. Right now it has 731GB space available so a total of ~270GB used.

I setup a SMB for Time Machine backup on my Synology NAS. It has 1.4TB of free space on it. The backup failed complaining

"The backup disk needs 4.52 TB for the backup but only 1.42 TB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files.".

Is it normal that I should have 16 times of data to do 1 backup?

MacBook Pro Didn't Go to Sleep and did not ask for password

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 08:59 PM PDT

I closed my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro (running Big Sur) at 9:57 p.m. I have my MacBook Pro set to passcode lock after 5 minutes of sleep. I opened my Mac at 10:09 p.m and my MacBook was not asleep/unlocked because it opened up to the Safari page I was on. This has happened before once as well (Mac should have been on Lock Screen/asleep but was not).

It had been well over 5 minutes, so shouldn't my MacBook have gone to sleep and went to the lock screen when I opened it back up? Do you think that my MacBook probably never went to sleep, and thus didn't passcode lock? If so, what kind of things could have caused that.

I checked terminal and "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep" had a "1" but said that it was due to the display being on. Are there other things that could sometimes prevent my MacBook from going to sleep, and thus not locking?

Picture in picture with YouTube app on iPhone?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 08:39 PM PDT

I was surprised the iPhone YouTube app didn't provide Picture in Picture support by default:

enter image description here

But this video has a lot of views and seems to show a simple way (basically go into settings and enable the feature).

However, when following the video's instructions, the option is not available in settings so it cannot be enabled.

The comments on the video indicate similar experiences.

Note

There is a short exchange in the comments which suggests YouTube Premium may be required, but then suggests that's not the issue (since people who have YT Premium also cannot access the feature):

I'm ... trying everything and can't get it

You need youtube premium.

Disk utility says partition is unformatted, Fsck says Macintosh HD is OK

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 06:37 PM PDT

I'm having an issue with my Mac OS X installation. When I start up the system I see a circle with a line through it. I reboot into Recovery Mode by pressing Cmd-R and open Disk Utility. It shows the Macintosh HD partition (/dev/disk0s2) as being "unformatted". I open Terminal, run fsck_hfs, and it says Macintosh HD is OK.

I can also successfully mount and unmount Macintosh HD with no signs of corruption. I have two questions.

Why does it have a circle with a line through it when I try to boot?

Why does it say unformatted when it clearly isn't?

Showing a macOS service in the menu

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 04:22 PM PDT

I have written a simple Automator workflow which process selected text. It does the job, and is available from most applications in the Service menu in the Text group.

I have one application, the application I really wanted to use it for, which doesn't show the text group in the Services menu, but it does show the development and general group.

Is there a technique to either show the Text group or to change the grouping of the workflow to the Development or General group?

What is new about the "new" Magic Mouse as of August 2021?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 08:56 PM PDT

The Magic Mouse is currently marked on Apple.com as being "new". I do not recall any news stories about the mouse having changed.

➥ What is new about it?

And what is the model number to identify these newer ones?

multiple Mac performance issues, possibly related?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 03:06 PM PDT

In the last few years my Mac has acquired several annoying quirks. In order of severity:

  • Save-dialogs take 15~45 sec to appear – and take awhile to dismiss if I hit cmd-S by accident.
  • Hitting caps lock often freezes the keyboard for several seconds.
  • In a few old fonts (Courier, Times, Palatino, Helvetica) lowercase 'z' and 'y' vanish, and 'x' appears as '"' (double opening quotation mark) – in Firefox and a few other apps but not everywhere.
  • Although I turned off screensavers (and hot corners), once in a while the Flurry screensaver activates while I'm working, after freezing all inputs for several seconds.

Other than the caps lock thing, each of these has persisted through a couple of major OS updates; I didn't notice that any of them began soon after an update.

There's no obvious link among these, so I won't be surprised if you tell me they ought to be separate Questions. But maybe they're all related to hidden Preferences and the like, accumulated over the years (this is my third or fourth Mac Mini since 2005), and I need to purge all that?

macOS Big Sur - Is "Documents" ""You have custom access" normal?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 05:07 PM PDT

New to the MacBook and Big Sur. Did multiple searches, no results specific to my question. Is it normal for the "Documents" folder to only show under "Sharing & Permissions" the "You have custom access"?

I know I change permissions, but the "Documents" folder doesn't allow that. Guidance? Explanation please?

Oddly enough, when I view the Documents from the second Admin account on the Mac, I don't see the "You have Custom Access", and I'm allowed to adjust the Documents folder permissions and access.

Thanks in advance.

Find Boot ROM Version in Big Sur

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 02:22 PM PDT

I swapped a failing SSD in my MacBook Pro 15" retina Late 2013 model, which had High Sierra v10.13.6 installed, with a NVMe ssd and directly installed Big Sur v11.5.1 from a bootable usb. It works fine.

I am aware of sleep/hibernate issues with NVMe drives, but as per this Macrumors thread (search for 6 - Hibernation issues on 2013-2014 laptops to arrive at the relevant section), Big Sur with Boot ROM 427.0.0.0 and higher prevent deep sleep issues without further system modifications.

But when I go to About This Mac > System Report > Hardware, the line for Boot ROM Version is missing there. It definitely was listed under High Sierra (I have a screenshot of it before the swap).

Currently, it shows me the following (relevant lines shown):

Model Identifier: Macbook Pro11,2 System Firmware Version: MBP112.0146.B00 SMC Version: 2.18f15

I even tried running /usr/libexec/firmwarecheckers/eficheck/eficheck --integrity-check and the output was:

EFI Version: MBP112.88Z.0146.B00.1804111138 Primary allowlist version match not found for version MBP112.88Z.0146.B00.1804111138

How can I figure out what is my current Boot ROM version. Any pointers?

P.S - I am aware of the workaround to completely disable deep sleep and hibernate, but I think with the right Boot ROM version i.e. 427.0.0.0 or higher, I wouldn't need to do anything at all.

Better way to access Safari website data on iOS?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 05:09 PM PDT

It is really irritating to have to one at a time delete hundreds of cookies/caches from websites I have never visited. (Would that Apple would allow us to block third-party cookies).

Is there an API that would allow me to build my own app in Xcode to handle it in a better way? Or something like Cookie 6 (macOS) for iOS? Or someone else's open source that I can compile?

I'm not willing to jailbreak, nor to install something with source code not vetted by me or Apple.

For example, clearing all website data and then logging in to Facebook.com adds five third-party cookies. Three of them are from domains owned by Facebook, but do not end in Facebook.com. The other two are obviously from advertising services.

enter image description here

This is why I use DuckDuckGo for almost everything, and Safari only occasionally. DuckDuckGo lets me clear everything after a session. I use Safari for a few domains where I'd like to keep their cookies only, but the cost of that is consumption of storage space that doesn't benefit me and prevents syncing all the music I'd like.

"Enter Passcode for Other iPhone"

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 08:03 PM PDT

I'm setting up an iPhone for a friend, who lost her old iPhone. She got a new iPhone at the Apple store. But when they configured it, she neglected to write down the new passcode & then keep it where she could find it again.

Fast forward to today. Now I'm trying to turn on "Find My" & iCloud backup, but can't because it requires that passcode. After checking with her, I followed instructions to reset the phone ("restore"). And now I'm going through the setup procedure: I chose "English", then "United States", then entered a new passcode (WHICH I WROTE DOWN!).

But now it says, "Enter Passcode for Other iPhone". That appears to refer to her old iPhone, which as I mentioned was lost, and I don't think she knew the passcode for that one either.

I thought I was out of the woods when I was able to set a new passcode, but suddenly there's this new hurdle to overcome. TIA for any ideas on how to get past this!

How to delete burst photos stuck in Recently Deleted folder?

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 12:07 AM PDT

I have a known bug (outlined here, here, here, here, and here) where burst photos won't delete.

I suspect instructions here would help, except my problem is more complicated since the bursts are not in Photos, but in 'Recently Deleted'.

Also, I have Emptied 'Recently Deleted' many times, so the files are still there, but they appear blank, so I cannot tell which of the 25000 files are bursts (there are 17 sets of bursts among the 25000 files).

Attempts to 'Delete' the files from 'Recently Deleted' results in them simply reappearing after exiting and reentering 'Recently Deleted'. Attempts to restore them results in blank files going back into Photos, with no way of distinguishing the bursts from the regular photos.

How to prevent Macbook from bluetooth reconnecting to lost connections?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 04:03 PM PDT

I have an Macbook Pro mid-2017 and a pair of Bluetooth ear-buds.

When I turn bluetooth off and on again on the Macbook, the ear-buds do not reconnect automatically, but when I just put the ear-buds in its case, so they turn off and I take them out again, they reconnect automatically.

When I get home and take the ear-buds out they still do reconnect, but when I take them out on the next morning, they don't.

It seems like there is an timeout or something for "lost Bluetooth connections".

I already tried this command:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist DontPageAudioDevices 1

Like I described it works, when I turn Bluetooth off and on again, but not when I only turn the ear-buds off.

The iPhone "xyz" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (4000)

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 03:14 PM PDT

Using iTunes to update my iPhone, I got:

Das iPhone "xyz" konnte nicht aktualisiert werden. Ein unbekannter Fehler ist aufgetreten (4000)

English:

The iPhone "xyz" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (4000).

enter image description here

I could not solve it with the Apple recommended answer at I got Error 4000 when updating iPhone asking you to:

  • update iTunes
  • update the pc
  • plug in the cable directly (I have not done anything else anyway)
  • Restart both pc and iPhone
  • Switch off antivirus and firewall in all possible options

How to fix this? And if there is no fix, which workaround can help?

Any iPhone app crashes whenever time radio dial is pressed

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 09:09 PM PDT

Problem

A few weeks ago, I noticed that I could not add any new alarms on my iPhone. Eventually, I figured out what was going on:

  • Whenever I press any button that launches a time-based radio dial (one of the pop-up context menus that has you choose a time or date), the app crashes.

Attempts to Fix It

  • I thought this was just a problem with the Clock app (I just use the standard iPhone clock), but when I tested other apps that have the datetime radio button, like the transit app I use, the same problem occurred.
  • I don't seem to have any other problems, other than this time-radio-button. No other problems on other apps, and the phone otherwise is working fine.
  • I have tried all of the standard means of trying to fix something while in ignorance:
    • reboot the phone
    • reset all of the settings (that was a pain, but I did it)
    • uninstall and reinstall the offending apps
  • None of those efforts worked, and Google searching, I couldn't even find anyone who had a similar problem.
  • There was even an iOS update recently, and after the update, the problem was still there.

Any ideas on what could be causing the problem and what I might be able to do to fix it?

My iPhone details:

  • iOS version 14.2
  • iPhone Xs (model #: MT9J2QN/A)
  • 256 GB, with 214 GB free

What is changing the default keyboard layout from "U.S." to symbols after hitting <option>+<e> in 10.15.7 on a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 05:05 PM PDT

The event:

After updating to 10.15.7 on a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro and hitting first time the + key - "é", the keyboard layout changed to symbols (instead of asdfg I get åß∂ƒ©). I have only the "U.S." keyboard layout installed. A few years ago I had the Greek because it was easier to type greek letters, but removed it about 4 years ago.

Symptoms:

  • Of course I am unable to log in. /Sometimes I can, but I was unable to determine what sequence of trials /+, , , , +, +++

    , etc.../ sets it back to "U.S".

  • The "About This Mac" menu item under the Apple menu disappear. A new menu item "System Information" appears.

  • When I am in an Application - let's say Safari -, the "Quit Safari" menu item changes to "Quit Safari but keep the Windows"

Remedies tried:

  • All the key combinations and more listed above. Did not work
  • Chat with Apple Support twice. They had no clue but recommended to reformat and reinstall.
  • Reformated all volumes that Apple allows to reformat and reinstalled from the Base Mac OS. Did not work.
  • Reformated again and installed 10.14.6. Did not work. After the first hit of + or +, the keyboard layout changed to symbols. Upgraded it to 10.15.7, hoping it will wipe the Base Mac OS clean and updates the EPROM... Did not work
  • Tried to boot from an USB drive that is bootable and contains 10.15.7 but after the Installer rebooted the machine the install did not continued from the USB drive, but rather of the Base Mac OS stored on the internal drive. So, ultimately did not work.

Any good suggestion that will work to keep the "U.S" keyboard layout?

Installing Ubuntu 20.04 on external drive with iMac running macOS + Windows 10

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 07:04 PM PDT

I have a late 2012 iMac running macOS High Sierra (10.13.6) and Windows 10 (Build 18362) through Bootcamp in legacy BIOS mode and I'd like to do a full install of Ubuntu 20.04 to this external drive and be able to boot it from the iMac when it's plugged in. I've seen guides that address installing Ubuntu either to a Mac + Windows system or to an external drive but not both at the same time. My guess is that the process is similar to this guide but if it's not, how would I go about doing this?

Apple Private Email Relay address - can I use it to request password reset?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 06:38 PM PDT

Recently I have used an Apple Private Email Relay address to sign up with an app in order to hide my own email address. Everything went well and I purchased the subscription.

Now I want to use the service on the other platforms as well. But in the web interface they are missing Sign In with Apple.

Since I know my Apple Private Email Relay address I can still sign in with this email, but I need to reset the password to do so.

I already requested password reset for the email address. But how could I access to the private relay email address's inbox.?

The mail has not been received by my default email address associated with my AppleID.

  1. Can I request password reset with an Apple Private Email Relay address?

What happens to an iOS app when a provisioning profile expires?

Posted: 07 Aug 2021 11:59 PM PDT

Question. What happens to an app when the provisioning profile used to build it expires? Does the app still launch on the device? Dos the app ever "call home" every few days/weeks to Apple to see if it is still valid?

I would assume that it would not (once its installed, its there), but if the phone was ever lost, and needed to be restored from backup, I would assume that the app would no longer work in this case, as when it calls back to apple, it is deemed not valid.

Forgive my simple question, but is my assumption correct?

How to save password for Cisco IPSec in Mac native VPN client?

Everytime I connect to the Cisco VPN using the built-in VPN client, it asks me for the password. I am wondering is there a way we can auto save the password, like using the keychain?

How can I save iOS Notes that maintain remain formatted?

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 12:00 AM PDT

I have an iPhone 5 running iOS 8.4.1. I have many Notes that are formatted using bold, italics, carriage returns, etc.

How can I save these Notes off to my Windows laptop via iTunes or some third-party software, while preserving the formatting of my Notes? Such software would need to be able to sync those Notes back to my iPhone, while still preserving all the rich text.

I want everything to remain local to my devices, so I don't want to use iCloud.

Thank you.
