iOS/iPadOS: Shortcuts from unknown source - inspect what it does for real Posted: 30 Aug 2021 12:27 AM PDT I'm trying to teach iPhone/iPad to import a calendar event from *.ics file (by default it's possible only when *.ics is opened from and only from Mail app). I found there is a shortcut called ICS To Calendar which does exactly what I need. But routinehub.co is not one of official trusted sources. I'd like to examine what does this shortcut in real before installing it. What I know about shortcuts is that they are basically XML files with routine blocks there. Is possible to download it from different device and open in text editor to see what it does? Or is there some other way? Thanks for your help! |
Macbook Pro is connected to wifi, but can't connect to internet? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:47 PM PDT I've recently changed my router(+NAS), Time Capsule, due to this problem, and now using new router, which is this one. It's working very good with my iPhone, iPad, two iMac and a Mac Mini. However, when it comes to my Macbook Pro, they don't work as intended. Before changing my router the wi-fi internet connection was very fine. So, I thought the router is having some problem, but it doesn't make sense since every other device I have is working very nicely. Then, I re-connected my Time Capsule to see if I can connect to internet with my MBP, and it works. So, I have no idea what's happening right now. The problem is only happening with the new router, other wifi is working fine, like workplace wifi, tethering, etc... I've checked if I'm having any error code or something but there wasn't anything I can find of. Now I don't know what to do. |
Which Apple/Beats earbud models have sound isolation (don't have air vents that allow room noise in)? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:35 PM PDT Which Apple or Beats earbud models (if any) have sound isolation (don't have air vents that allow room noise in)? I can find no mention of noise or sound isolation in the marketing material of AirPods or Powerbeats. Some places I looked: No mention of sound isolation at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210633(Choose your AirPods Pro ear tips and use the Ear Tip Fit Test) (just ANC) or at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201125(About your Beats eartips) No identification of Noise-isolating models at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201129(About Beats noise cancellation and noise isolation) The AirPods Pro have an air vent and I didn't perceive any sound isolation when they were in and off, vs. not in at all. Yes, I'm aware of the ANC/Transparency(w/customization under Accessibility)/Conversation Boost/Off settings, but they don't directly address the question. I get the feeling that the air vent has to be there to provide great sound quality, but Apple avoids talking about it. ANC is good, but I'd rather have sound isolation + ANC, not one or the other, as I find the hiss of ANC annoying at times. So I'm thinking I have to go with non-Apple earbuds if I want this. |
What is the procedure for completely and permanently removing all Adobe products? [closed] Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:04 PM PDT I am looking for reliable and complete instructions for completely removing all traces of Adobe products from my Mac (Big Sur). I know that in theory I should just use Adobe's uninstaller(s) and that if Adobe's apps were well behaved I would simply drag them to the trash. But my experience has been otherwise: traces are left behind that come to life zombie-like on their own, and there appears to be no permanently kill them. What is the procedure for completely and permanently removing all Adobe products? I'm fine with using the command line if I have to, but ideally something like App Zapper would be enough. I will be permanently removing everything Adobe-related, so there is no need to preserve settings account information, documents, or history. Specifically, what techniques have people had success with? (I should note that I have done the obvious: follow Adobe's instructions, even following step by step using Adobe chat support. But these do not work and I end up with processes that keep restarting.) |
Blinking question mark folder icon after Ubuntu USB boot Posted: 30 Aug 2021 12:41 AM PDT A few days ago, I booted into Ubuntu from a USB drive on my late 2011 13'' MacBook Pro. The computer has an SSD that was installed about 5 years ago to improve performance. Yesterday, I turned my computer on, it booted normally, I logged in, startup programs opened up, and then it froze. I left it by itself for a while, came back, and it was still frozen. I restarted it and got a blank screen with a blinking question mark in a folder icon. I first tried rebooting it again, to no avail. I rebooted into recovery mode so that I could use Disk Utility to copy the computer's drive into an external HDD. Disk Utility sees my internal drive, but when choosing Restore I get the following error message: restore failed, could not validate source - error 254 I then tried booting into Ubuntu with the same flash drive, which worked and ran sudo fdisk -l in the Ubuntu terminal, which again shows (among other things) my internal drive (it appears as /media/newhd). I then ran sudo mkdir /media/newhd sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/newhd I again get an error message, this time it reads: mount: /media/newhd: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda, missing codepage or helper program, or other error Where do I go from here? I could try Clonezilla, but my understanding is that it can be quite painful to use. I've also read the hard drive cable can become damaged with time, so I was considering buying a SATA to USB adapter and trying to access the internal SSD from another computer, so as to determine if the disk itself is still working. Is there anything else I can do? I don't recall there being anything super important on the computer, but I'd rather try more data recovery options before wiping everything and doing a clean install of some OS (of course, assuming the disk itself is not the problem). |
Size on disk smaller than actual size Posted: 29 Aug 2021 04:21 PM PDT I have Bitwarden on my machine and looked at the reported file size, wich is 423,6MB . The downloaded file is much smaller, also the reported size on disk is much smaller too with 176,5MB I expected if anything that the size on disk would always be larger due to block size, but not smaller. How can this be? |

Good alternative to Adobe Photoshop Posted: 29 Aug 2021 11:16 AM PDT Adobe products have always been the bane of my Mac existence, and lately they seem to have gotten even worse (notably running multiple processes in the background constantly accessing my keychain and connecting to the internet without being explicitly launched). As near as I can tell there is no way to avoid this, so I need a good alternative app. A paid app is fine. As close as possible to Photoshp's feature set would be nice, but I do not do professional image work, but mostly basic web design elements and tweaking of photos. |
Safari downloads files to last opened folder Posted: 29 Aug 2021 11:02 PM PDT Although Safari has a setting for a default download folder, it always defaults to the last folder I uploaded something from when downloading via "save as". This is very annoying for obvious reasons: I rarely want to download something to the last opened folder and I rarely remember what that folder was. Is there a way to make it not do this? |
Couldn't read partition map when deleting APFS container Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:02 AM PDT I'm trying to clean install macOS 11.5.1 via a bootable USB. But I couldn't find the internal SSD through the onscreen installation steps. I searched Google, trying fixing this problem, and found this command: diskutil zerodisk force disk0. So I tried this in the command line(Now I realize I really shouldn't do that). I think after this, the partion map becomes corrupt. When later found and execute the diskutil apfs delteContainer disk0s2, it returned the error: Couldn't read partition map. Here are the result of the command: gpt -r show disk0 and diskutil list (I couldn't get the text to another computer, so it's an screenshot. Sorry for the inconvenience.) If more information is needed, please tell me. Thank you for any help or suggestion. disk0 and disk1 is the internal SSD(I don't know why there're two identifier for it). disk2 is the bootable usb installer. |
How to properly (quickly) iterate over Reminders using AppleScript/osascript? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:03 PM PDT What is the proper, efficient way to iterate over Reminders using AppleScript? The script below works as expected, but takes 18 seconds to iterate over 180 Reminders when run from the command line using osascript! (This same script takes only 2-3 seconds when run from within the ScriptEditor.) # Find all Reminders whose name contains "Alumni" set findMe to "Alumni" set answer to "Maches: " tell application "Reminders" set names to name of every reminder end tell repeat with name in names if name contains findMe then set answer to answer & " --- " & name end if end repeat return answer I've run this script two ways from the command line: As a compiled script: osascript testReminders2.scrpt and as a text file: ./testReminders2.applescript (where this file begins with #! /usr/bin/osascript . Both versions take about the same amount of time. |
macOS Catalina does not allow incoming connections from local network. Firewall is down Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:04 PM PDT I starting facing this issue some days ago. Can't connect to any apple servers, third party apps have trouble connecting Posted: 29 Aug 2021 11:02 AM PDT Problem I can't login to iCloud, Itunes, App Store on my Macbook Accessing the App Store app displays a 'Cannot connect to App Store' message Attempting to sign in by going to [System Preferences > iCloud] and entering my password results in "There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server" (On my last attempt it made it to the two step verification step. But after entering the code it hung for some time before the message "Account Details could not be opened because of an error connecting to iCloud." - I can sign in to apple.com on the same computer through a browser with the same login information just fine.
Context I've never had this issue before until a few days ago. One day I had issues login through another application (Clip Studio). I also get "steam was unable to sync your files with the steam cloud" message when trying to play games on Steam (another application on my mac). Is there any way to write an automation or program on an iPad except Shortcuts? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 07:00 PM PDT I would like to build an interface - a set of menus, for example - which presents information from an app or a webpage and allows me to read and interact with it in a different way than it is presented or accessible in that app or website. I am working on an iPad, so I am considering trying to write some kind of web scraping Shortcut which returns information from the website. I was curious, is there any other hypothetical way to create an automation, on an iPad? Could there be any tool which could override, control and automate the iPad, even if Apple has made it very difficult to do so? |
Why is there no "Restore" or "put back" button in my trash? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:01 PM PDT There is no restore option when I right click a folder in my trash. Did I do something wrong with my computer to cause it to do away with this option? |
Sending mouse to different monitors for all sides Posted: 29 Aug 2021 06:04 PM PDT So I have external monitors set up like this (one vertical) And as you can see I am only able to send a mouse to another screen via lower half of each sides. I want to be able to send mouse not just the bottom half but upper half as well. Is there a way to this? I understand there is a keyboard shortcut approach but I'd prefer to be able to move mouse straight to another monitor. |
Windows installation through bootcamp and SSD error Posted: 29 Aug 2021 08:01 PM PDT I have a Macbook Pro 2017, and I've been trying to install Windows 10 on it for quite a while through Bootcamp, but I was advised to purchase an SSD (Samsung T7 500 GB). However, that also did not solve my issue. Every time I try to install Windows, the first time the Mac boots from the external startup disk, I am faced with a BSOD error saying 'your computer ran into an error, please restart'. I have tried multiple Windows 10 ISO's 1909, 1809, 1607, and the current version 20H2 available on Microsoft (30th October 2020). I also reset PRAM before every installation. To install Windows, I followed this 9to5Mac tutorial, as well as the accepted answer to this question. Can someone PLEASE HELP ME :((( |
Is there any way to force CLI "softwareupdate" to display & install updates other than the latest one? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:01 AM PDT I'm currently trying to install updates for Mac OS Catalina using softwareupdate CLI tool. I successfully upgraded a 10.15.5 installation on a VM to 10.15.6: softwareupdate -iaR I tried installing 10.15.3 in a separate VM and I noticed if I list the available updates, the only one being displayed is the latest: Which is inconvenient since I would like to manage updates selectively. Any way to force this to display more updates? I know creating a temporary file in /tmp/ forces the command line tools update to be displayed, for example. I was thinking as well of just downloading the specific update dmg from Apple Downloads. |
Track volume keeps resetting itself Posted: 29 Aug 2021 11:36 AM PDT I'm using garageband, and I am trying to lower the volume of one track. I adjust the volume slider to where I want it (-13.8 db) , but when I start playing the song, the volume slider for that track instantly resets itself back to a much higher volume (+1.8 db). If I adjust the volume while the song is playing, it works, until I restart. If I start the song from anywhere but the very beginning, it plays at this right volume. If I start it from the beginning, it plays with the higher volume. I'm so confused as to why this is happening. I'm using volume automation to fade out at the very end, but it's flat until then, so I don't know why it would cause this. (Yes, the line in the automation is where I want it). Any ideas? Here is a video of the issue in case my description was unclear. |

error -36 on a brand new samsung 850 ssd drive Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:03 PM PDT I after some advnature (as described here) I have successfully booted osx installation from a brand new SSD by Samsung (EVO 850). I am running osx 10.11.6 (trim is not enabled). My Mac is mid 2009 macbook pro. When installing, I have restored a Time Machine state. Now, whenever I try to access large files on the disk, they fail to be copied with an error message -36: saying that source file "cannot be read or written". I am able to successfully copy files from the backup disk or from internet to the SSD, but once there, they cannon be copied further (they can be moved, but this is just bookkeeping operation, no data is read then). So it seems the problem occurs when the OS tries to actually read something besides FS entries. The error persists both in Finder and Terminal. The SSD is brand-new. It has uptime of 7 hrs, and 41 power cycles. It comes clean with "disk utility" - no problems detected, but I guess this tool does not perform disk read/write integrity test, just checks FS entries. Am I right? So what options do I have here? |
How to disable scroll acceleration in macOS Sierra? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:15 AM PDT A few releases ago OS X introduced scroll acceleration, which means if you keep scrolling in some direction, the speed of the scroll will be greater and greater. You cannot disable this from the UI. It is extremely annoying if you want to scroll through a long website or a long source code in an editor. Until macOS Sierra you could disable this using DisableExtremeScrollAcceleration tool. But this tool is no longer working. Is there any way to prevent the scroll acceleration? |
What application can rotate a TIFF without re-encoding it? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:13 PM PDT This question is inspired by my earlier question: Ask Different: Why does rotating a TIFF in Preview increase the file size? One thing I don't like about the Preview application is that even something as simple as rotating an image 90 degrees requires Preview to re-encode the file, adding an alpha channel in the process. This results in a file that is 10% to 20% larger than the original, with no added benefit. This size difference may not matter much on a 5 MB file, but on a 500 MB file, it is a nuisance. Are there any applications that can rotate a TIFF image 90 degrees without re-encoding it and altering the image in any other way? The source of the TIFF is a scanner, which does not offer a rotation feature. I did a search and all I found were JPEG programs. (2013 rMBP) -- (OS X 10.11.4) |

iPhoto - find all photos that look like this photo? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:16 PM PDT All, is there a way in iPhoto to find all the photos that look like a given photo? I suppose I could use Face, but it's actually not for a face, so that's a bit strange. For example, I'd like to tag my pet's photos with the pet's name. I also would like to find all the photos I took of plated food, etc. |

OSX Yosemite - Mission Control stopped working Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:55 PM PDT Not sure how long this has been happening, but I just noticed it AFTER Yosemite update. Mission control just does not work: using hot corners, keyboard shortcut, or even double clicking Mission Control.app, there is no way to make my Mac go to Mission Control/Exposé. By the way, I have hot corners for showing desktop and app windows exposé, neither of which work. Hot corners for dashboard and Notification center work as usual. Any ideas why does it happen, how could I solve it? Thanks a lot. |
How to get Gmail Categories in macOS Mail app? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 08:36 PM PDT I'm using the default Gmail inbox, where emails are magically filed under the proper tab: Primary, Social, Update and Forum. In Mail on OS X Yosemite (10.10) however, all end up in the Inbox. I can see my custom labels (I use several) under "Google" in the left panel. Under Mailboxes, I have of course the standard Inbox, Drafts, Outbox... But the Gmail tabs appear nowhere, not even as folders. I could maybe create rules on Gmail that would match the tabs, e.g. if this is a "Social" email, then add a label "Social", but this seems clumsy. Is there an easy/elegant way to enable it? EDIT You can follow the instructions from this page (too long to reproduce them here). It boils down to creating server filters for each category (=tab), in order to archive the email from your inbox and apply a label on it. Then, it will show nicely in OSX Mail. Some caveats though: - The search function in Mail does not work on all folders at once
- You lose the small tab counter, telling you for instance you have 3 new emails in Social. The counter resets itself as soon as you hit the tab in Gmail. Not in OSX Mail
