Is there a way to open the app only on the currect screen? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 12:19 AM PDT I have a MacBook pro and I connected the additional screen to it, so I have two screens one of the MacBook and the other one is that I connected. The situation is that I work with XCode and I opened two instances of it one XCode window I put on the first screen and another window of it I put on the second screen, then (eg:) I opened Safari browser on the first screen and on the second one I opened Finder(or something else), so in this case, my XCode windows left behind. Now I need to get the XCode window back on the second screen, BUT I want to leave the Safari browser on the first screen, the problem is that if I move the mouse to the bottom panel where is XCode icon and click on it (in order to bring it forward as on Windows) as a result it brings me forward XCode on both first and second screens, so I need to go and open Safari on the second screen. It is very annoying because each time I expect that it opens me XCode on the screen where I invoke it, it opens it on both screens (because I have 2 of the instances). I would like to get functional as on Windows, when I go to the specific screen and open the app on that screen, it opens exactly on that screen and doesn't bring forward all windows of the app on all the screens. It is a little bit confusing, but I hope you got my idea. Are there any solutions for it? |
Automate switching to login screen in Big Sur or later Posted: 18 Jul 2021 11:46 PM PDT I am looking for a way that I can automate switching to the login window in Big Sur. App blocking access if I don't allow tracking Posted: 19 Jul 2021 12:03 AM PDT my government's (Hungary) health app just received an update and now it prevents me to use it unless I authorize the Privacy Tracking of iOS. Reading on the Apple knowledge base, I found this:
Source: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212025 From my understanding, apps are not allowed to limit the app functionalities if the user doesn't allow tracking. (See policies below) I tried to contact Apple about that but the operator was completely clueless about the whole App Store policies and the way apps' updates get approved by Apple. I'm now out of options since there's no way for me to access my COVID immunity certificate if I don't allow my government to track me, and considered the recent news about spywares used by Hungary I don't feel safe to allow a gov app to track me. Is there any way to circumvent this limitation or report the problem to Apple? Policies:

I can't set the default printer size to 4"x6" on my MacBook (Big Sur) Posted: 18 Jul 2021 08:26 PM PDT It's pretty frustrating. I can set it manually each time I print something from that device (Dymo 4XL label printer) but thats not what I want to do. I want to set it as the default size under printer settings so that I can have it be selected by default when I go to print with the Dymo 4XL. I can see that there is a method to do it via CUPS (I have it on a print server) which would be great, but 4"x6" isnt available there either lol. THANK YOU! |
How to troubleshoot Canon scanner no longer scanning via image capture? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 07:55 PM PDT I have a Canon MF4770n printer/scanner connected via Ethernet to the home network, and a Mac running Mac OS 10.14.6. Previously (for years), I could open Image Capture and choose the scanner and thereby scan images to my computer either from the flatbed or the document scanner. Although the print capabilities still work, AND the scanner still shows in the list in the Image Capture utility, I now get the following error when I actually click the "scan" button in Image Capture: What's even more interesting, if I click the scan button on the computer without anything in the document feeder, I just get a message that there's nothing in the document feeder. So the scanner is definitely connected. This is repeatedly reproducible. How can I troubleshoot? |
Any known method to export old version of an App stored in iPhone device to .IPA file? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 05:52 PM PDT I have an old version of an app running on an iPhone 4S with iOS 9.3.5 I'm trying to find a way to export this version of the app as an .IPA file to be able to install it to another device running same iOS version. Anyone knows any method that works on 2021? I've searched so many things but can't find a working method. |
msd_stores consuming twice the amount of memory than I have available on my mac Posted: 18 Jul 2021 05:19 PM PDT There's only 16Gb of RAM on this computer (quad-core 15" Macbook Pro) but Activity Monitor is saying mds_store is using 32Gb. Rendering in Sublime and Brave browser when I scroll and type was lagging considerably. It's been indexing for at least the last two days.
After that, I run Also, after upgrading to Big Sur, Spotlight basically useless since it's so slow. |
Big Sur and Seagate 2TB Expansion Drive Slow Posted: 18 Jul 2021 05:13 PM PDT I've been using these 2TB Seagate Expansion Drives for a while with Logic Pro, but today it the HD usage in Logic Pro keeps maxing out: CPU usage is negligible. I tried moving Logic's Sound Library to a different drive, but that didn't seem to make a difference. Disc Utility didn't find any errors on the drive and a Disc Speed Test returns the following: Which compares very unfavorably to a test on the internal drive: However another Seagate 2TB Expansion drive shows the same speed, so maybe that's expected. Disc Util reports the following on the Seagate External drive: The temperature in the room is about 85-90 degrees, so I'm wondering if that is causing the issue. |

Will AirPods Max play (low-latency) audio over USB connection to Mac? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 02:08 PM PDT Given AirPods Max connected via a USB-C to Lightning cable to a Mac - will it be able to play audio with (relatively) low latency over the USB connection? Playing audio over Bluetooth has too high latency for my purpose (in the range of 175 ms). I know lower latency (in the range of 10 ms) audio is possible with the Lightning to 3.5 mm cable. However, I would like to be able to connect it to my Mac via USB directly. |
Screenshots aren't working on my Apple Watch Posted: 18 Jul 2021 01:05 PM PDT I have an Apple Watch series 6 running WatchOS 7.5. I used to be able to take screenshots by pressing the Digital Crown and side button simultaneously, but this no longer works. In Settings > General > Screenshots, "Enable Screenshots" is enabled. However, when I press the Digital Crown and side button simultaneously, my watch doesn't take a screenshot. Instead it appears to register the press on the Digital Crown first (so for example, if I'm on the home screen it opens the App view), then the side button a moment later (i.e. shows the app switcher). |

Microsoft Teams "Files" tab missing on iOS Posted: 18 Jul 2021 11:02 PM PDT Unfortunately, we are unable to visit the user in person and they are not very technically able, so apologies in advance for the lack of information available. Model: ? iOS Version: ? We have tried removing the app and reinstalling it. We have also tried removing the app via "offload App" to remove any cache. User has access to the rest of the functionality of the Teams app, however, there is no "Files" option in any of the groups or chats they have access to. The Files option shows fine on the desktop, and they can access the files, so we know it's not an access rights issue. Any ideas are welcome :) |
Buzzing sound through MBA earphones while charging Posted: 18 Jul 2021 09:04 PM PDT I have got a MBA M1 base variant and am in India with 220 V @ 50 Hz power supply. Currently, my MBA is plugged in (and 100% charged) and through my earphones I am hearing a buzzing sound. If I turn off the power then the sound vanishes. More interestingly though, if I touch my hand to any area on the metal surface the sound vanishes. Likewise, if the power is plugged-in and I drag my hand through any area of the metal surface then there is a distinctive vibration I can feel which is absent when my hand is resting. Is this normal behaviour? Is there any chance of damage of any kind? Could this be a grounding issue? I'm pretty sure that the power is grounded (but not 100% sure). Edit : Additional Comment - In case it's relevant I bought the MacBook through official online store of Apple so no chance of a run-in with power rating issues. Also, the power supply at my place is rock-steady. |
Catalina crashing at shutdown: “watchdog timeout: no checkins from watchdogd” Posted: 18 Jul 2021 04:04 PM PDT I have a MacBook Air 2017 with 8GB of RAM and 1.8 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, After updating to macOS Catalina, while I'm using my laptop it would freeze and the screen would turn black with a folder sign with a question mark in the middle flashing. This happens a lot and when I reboot my laptop this message pops up: I have gone to apple and they wiped my laptop and reinstalled macOS Catalina but the problem still persists. What do I do? |
When accessing my Windows DFS share on my Mac machine, it shows empty folder Posted: 18 Jul 2021 02:04 PM PDT I have a domain server mydomain.com and a DFS server which is part of mydomain.com. DFS server has a share with namespace //mydomain.com/Datashare, which points to a TestData folder inside the machine. TestData has few files 1.txt,2.txt. When i access my DFS share on a windows machine it mounts the share and shows the folder TestData with files 1.txt and 2.txt. When I access same share on my Mac machine it mounts the share and dispalys TestData folder. however it does not show any file inside this folder. Someone discuss a solution of setting same search domain on Mac machine as AD sets on windows but that solution does not work for me. |
How can I have a key pressed at a specific time? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 06:02 PM PDT I want to press a certain key (e.g. 'p') in a certain time (e.g. at 00:00), how can I accomplish this? Does OS X support SMB Direct (RDMA)? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 07:08 PM PDT SMB over RDMA technology was introduced in SMB 3.0, and gained broader popularity in the last couple of years. Does anyone know if I can recompile sharing or enable this on macOS? |
iMac running on external SSD won't boot from it after upgrade to Catalina Posted: 18 Jul 2021 07:02 PM PDT it seems a very similar problem has been reported. Nevertheless, its resolution is not clear and seems to be a matter of chance. For clarity let me add the following background info: For a couple of months I've been successfully running my 2013 iMac from an external SSD (for speed reasons). Initially, the SSD was a clone of my internal High Sierra Macintosh HD. Since then, program updates and content were added successfully to the SSD. Today I performed a successful upgrade to Catalina. The system looked fine. I then performed another recommended security + Safari update. When completed the Mac booted to the old High Sierra OS from the internal HDD! I used the Startup preferences to set the external 10.15 OS X SSD as boot disk - no effect! still booting from HDD. I tried rebooting into Recovery mode (cmd+R+power) to get access to the disk utility - no effect! the boot process form HDD continued regardless of that. This key combination worked fine when I cloned my HDD. The same happened when I tried NVRAM reset (opt+cmd+R+P) - the boot process form HDD continued regardless of that. I disconnected the SSD and tried again Recovery mode and NVRAM reset. This time the key combination commands seem to work, but even though I selected to boot from the SSD, which I reconnected, iMac simply booted from the internal HDD. I made the above attempts following advices provided in various forums where success was reported on sporadic cases. Is there any structured procedure (or another wild idea), to set it right? i.e. make iMac boot from the external Catalina SSD Comments:

iPadOS Add entry to text replacement (user dictionary) from shortcuts Posted: 18 Jul 2021 08:02 PM PDT I'm using the apple pencil on Ipad and work with a lot of abbreviations. So every-time I write one, it will be replaced with whatever is the closest match in the English dictionary. I can work around that by adding the abbreviations in the user dictionary (settings - general - keyboard - text replacement). So I often find myself going to this setting to add a new abbreviation. I would like to make this a bit easier by creating a shortcut that can do it for me. So far, all I can do is a shortcut that will take me to the "text replacement" page : It's ok but I wish I could just ask for input and push this into the user dictionary all through the shortcut. Is there a way to do this? |
Default paper size for 4" x 6" label printer - Mac OS 10.15.7 Posted: 18 Jul 2021 08:27 PM PDT I have two 4" x 6" label printers. Every time I print a label, I have to MANUALLY select 4" x 6" output (which is often forgotten -- screwing up several labels) ANNOYING! So I remember -- head smack -- default paper size setting in System Preferences! But go there and there is no selection for 4" x 6" I feel like I am not the first to have this issue. How can I set a label printer to have 4" x 6" as its default media? |

I deleted Macintosh HD - Data and now the computer won't boot even in Recovery Mode Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:01 AM PDT Okay all, I think I messed up really big time. Was so excited and delighted today to see my brand spanking new MacBook Air arrive (running Catalina). Everything was wokring great; I started Migration Assistant to get it migrating over from my old computer and, after a little while for the preliminaries, it said it was going to be 6.5 hours. So I thought let's not do this right now, so I can still use the old computer, and cancelled it. That was my first mistake. It wouldn't let me go back to the original state of Migration Assistant; the users were already on the new computer. Okay, fine, I have to go into Utilities to find Migration Assistant on the new computer. But then when Migration Assistant did start up again, it would keep freezing in the early stages, stalled and not progressing - never even got to the part where it estimated time remaining. It did this in multiple ways, whether I was connected through WiFi or Ethernet, direct from the old Mac or through my Time Capsule. So I figured I wanted to start clean. And this appears to be where I made the REALLY big mistake. I thought "well, I'll just wipe the data so I can start clean, right?" I tried to followed instructions for a factory reset: went into Recovery Mode (cmd-R), entered Disk Utility, deleted the Macintosh HD-Data partition. I thought that what I was supposed to do next was delete the Macintosh HD partition too. But it wouldn't let me do that because it was in use. I also tried to reinstall the US, and it wouldn't let me do that either (also because it was in use). Okay, I thought, I'll just restart and see what happens. And now my brand new $1800 computer is completely bricked. The Apple logo appears, followed briefly by the start of the progress bar - and then I hear this whooshing sound, like ocean surf or a heavy breath, and it turns back off again... and then the Apple logo appears again and the same thing happened. Over and over on an endless cycle, just Apple and whoosh. I can sometimes get it to turn off by holding the power button, but turning it back on just gives me the endless cycle and whooshing again; I can't get into Recovery mode. In the old days I would have tried sticking a paper clip in or some other option for a hard reboot, but there's nowhere to do that. Help! How can I get back to a brand-new computer with the old data smoothly migrated? |

Screen on Max Brightness Appears Slightly Dim After Sleeping, MacBook Pro 2015 Posted: 18 Jul 2021 05:02 PM PDT The issue: Screen appears about 2-3 dots dimmer on max brightness after waking from sleep for more than 30 minutes. I only noticed this a few months after upgrading to Catalina, it's been ongoing ever since. My settings: No auto-adjusted brightness, disabled screen temperature modifiers like NightShift/Flux, slightly higher gamma color profile for better contrast/brightness (it looks a bit faded otherwise). My computer: MacBook Pro 13" early 2015 mid-tier model with Catalina 10.15.4. (bought in 2017 used, no repairs or hardware issues the whole year. Great battery cycle life). My Temporary solution: Resetting the PRAM (cmd + opt + P + R). This fix lasts until I close my laptop and let it sleep overnight usually. Sometimes I've had success reducing the brightness before putting it to sleep. I am not completely sure if this is hardware or software related. Edit: There have been rare/infrequent occasions when my display would do weird things after waking from sleep. There was one incident of my display completely blanking out with a white pixelated screen for a moment (like an old static TV out of tune). A few other incidents where the display blinks black or totally freezes. It was at first a problem with video playback and hardware acceleration, but now I am beginning to believe it may be a hardware-related problem (though this Mac doesn't have a graphics card). Thanks for your time and consideration! |
Strictly limit macOS Photos library size using "Optimize Storage"? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 09:10 PM PDT I want to use the Photos.app option "Optimize Mac Storage" to free up space on my Mac, rather than downloading my entire iCloud Photos Library to my small laptop SSD. Is there any way to strictly limit the space given to the Photos library? I want to give, say, 40 GB to Photos. The app can "optimize" that space as it sees fit, but I never want it to take more than 40 GB.

How to scan for duplicate files / images in one direction only? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 10:24 PM PDT I am looking for a solution to search for duplicate files / images on my mac but only in one direction: Folders A and B should be compared but I am only interested in files in folder A with duplicates in folder B. If there are any duplicates within B does not matter. In detail: On my Mac I have large collection of photos and images. Lets say they are all located in Within these folders there same known duplicates which where created intentionally. For example I have one folder When I import photos from my camera it can happen that some of them have been imported before. Thus I would like to compare the import folder to the existing photos folder and find only duplicates
I am not interested in duplicates within the existing photos. I tried some known duplicate scanners like Gemini, Cisdem, etc. They all allow to select multiple folders to compare but they don't seem to have an oneway option. Can this be solved with macOS features or is there any tools which offers this option? EDIT: As requested here is an example: Potential duplicates: The first duplicate is within the existing collection and is a known duplicates which should not be deleted / scanned for. The second duplicate is within the import folder and should be deleted The 3rd duplicate has one version in the import folder and one in the existing collection. The import version should be deleted. All duplicate scanners I have tests do not only test the file name but also the capture date, other raw data etc. to make sure files are equal. Additionally they can scan for similar pictures which are not 100% identical but almost the same. |
Posted: 18 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT I have had X11 installed on my Mac for quite some time (as long as I have owned it I think) and have never used it. Do applications still use X11 or is out outdated at this point? Should I "learn" how to use it because I may use it in the future? The reason I ask is that I read that you can run X over SSH and I thought it might be useful to run a window manager to get some graphics from a remote machine. Then I realized I have never used X11 and launched it only to become confused. So should I use X11 and why? |
