In Big Sur on a 2020 Mini, is there a way to change the initial user login screen background? Posted: 24 Jul 2021 08:31 PM PDT Dear Technical Wizards, I have been told by Apple that it is impossible to remove or change the initial login screen background. Is this true? I'm talking about the cheap, garish, brightly coloured abstract image. It's totally intrusive. The sort of thing Steve Job might have fired someone for. |
All bluetooth devices disconnect repeatedly. Host controller terminated Posted: 24 Jul 2021 09:02 PM PDT My primary question is what should I be looking for in logs to help pinpoint the cause of this? Keyboard, mouse, and headphones all disconnect at the same time, possibly when memory utilization is high or temperature is high. After reconnecting, they will disconnect again in a few minutes. The only way to get them to reconnect reliably, is to restart the computer, and not reopen the resource intensive apps. This behavior is new, started within the last week. No updates or new software were installed in the days leading up to the first occurance. I have been able to reproduce the behavior using different resource heavy programs. It primarily occurs while running OBS studio and zoom at the same time, while screen sharing from my ipad, but it also happens when streaming video in chrome for example. So it doesn't seem to be from running one of those apps specifically, just anything that consumes a lot of resources. That level of RAM use (>60%) also only happens when the CPU temp (cpu diode) is at 200F or above, so hard to say if it's a memory issue or a temperature issue. Again, this level of resource utilization wasn't triggering this behavior a week ago. Checking in console near the time of the disconnect shows Not sure what other logs/info is relevant. Device: MacBook Pro (Late 2013) OS: Big Sur 11.4 (previous to today), Big Sur 11.5 I've tried various combinations of resetting the bluetooth module, deleting and repairing all devices, resetting the SMC, clearing the NVRAM. None of these things prevents it from happening again the next time resource utilization gets high. It looks like there was a similar issue in the past that bluetoothd (or similar) was killed by the kernel when memory pressure got too high, but this was fixed in Catalina 10.15.3. Bluetooth audio devices stop working after a few minutes https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251061620 However, I don't have any similar messages in console. Maybe I'm not sure what to look for though. |
How can I sync ebooks to my iPad without removing the existing ones? Posted: 24 Jul 2021 07:32 PM PDT I have an iPad 3 ("iPad 2 Retina") that I use basically just as an e-reader now. It is still running iOS 6.1 and has a collection of eBooks on it. I want to sync a new ebook over to it from my Macbook Pro running Catalina, however if I tick the Sync box in Finder I'm asked if I want to remove all the books on the iPad currently. Clearly I do NOT want to do this! How can I add an eBook to my iPad from my Mac without removing anything that's currently on it? |
Why is the Bookmark button disabled in Apple Books? Posted: 24 Jul 2021 03:27 PM PDT I'm reading a PDF manual downloaded from the internet in Apple Books. The Bookmark icon is disabled. How can I fix this? Can I fix it directly from my iPad? |

Local iPhone backup stuck - confusing folder sizes Posted: 24 Jul 2021 12:51 PM PDT I'm making a local backup of my new iPhone.
I'm a bit lost here. How can I fix this and make sure that I have a proper backup? This is the first backup on this phone. |
Obtaining the Russian Typewriter keyboard layout Posted: 24 Jul 2021 12:23 PM PDT This is my very first experience with Apple products. For the last 20+ years, I have been using the Russian Typewriter keyboard layout that is available out-of-the-box in all Windows and GNU/Linux distributions. (This layout is much more convenient than other Russian layouts, as the digits are typed via Shift, while , and . are available when you press 6 and 7 without Shift. In many other Russian layouts, the comma and the dot are under the right pinky, and sometimes even on the same button, so that you need to use Shift to type a comma.) I have tried to find the Russian Typewriter keyboard layout in System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources. In the list of available Russian layouts, there are only three options:
Is that possible to find the Russian Typewriter keyboard layout in the settings? Or my only option is to utilise an external application, such as Ukelele? |
What caused the iOS DCIM folder structure to change? Posted: 24 Jul 2021 01:43 PM PDT For years, whenever I connected an iOS device to my Windows computer, in file explorer I saw a What triggers this change? Is there a way to switch back? At first I thought it was updating to iOS 14.6; since my second device has an even more recent version, though, I'm wondering if there's some other necessary condition to trigger the folder name change. I've found a couple references to this around the internet, but nothing definitive. |
Is it okay to create space on APFS synthesized disk to install windows without bootcamp? Posted: 24 Jul 2021 02:20 PM PDT Honestly I do not have enough reputation to comment on this post: https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/307469/425311 Step two in the above link says:
His command Mine shows: What would it look like if the space was inside "any APFS or Core Storage containers"? Continuing with the instruction will "absorb the free space" into a volume which is on an APFS container scheme, which defies the instruction. Does it matter that the volume to "absorb the free space" is in an APFS type container? Perhaps I should be trying to change the type to HFS as per the instruction example? Should there be any other changes that you could make me aware of or shall I continue straight ahead and absorb the free space into JacOS? I'm hesitant to experiment as there is only one OS. I appreciate your answers. I am using MacOS High-Sierra 10.13.6 with an intel CPU and SSD drive. |

Downgraded from Big Sur to Mojave on Macbook Air, Photos app won't open Posted: 24 Jul 2021 11:52 AM PDT On my Macbook Air, I downgraded from Big Sur to Mojave, and the Photos app won't open. Photos are located on an SD card and not on the MacBook HD. The reason I downgraded was because the essential software I constantly used did not work on Big Sur. I simply restored from a backup I had made on Mojave before I got the local Mac service people to install a new (larger) hard drive. It may be (I don't recall) I opened the Photos app when Big Sur was installed, and if so, it may have altered the database setup. |
Inconsistent rendering of UTF-8 in Mail Posted: 24 Jul 2021 06:02 PM PDT I recently received this (not the first time) in Mail.app on MacOS 11.4: This is curious. I have everything on this end set to use UTF-8 output and to assume UTF-8 if the encoding header is missing. (Unless Apple changed it during an update as they sometimes do). Why would the first two hanzi be rendered correctly and the third use ISOLatin1? Is it a bug I should report, and to which (Apple or web host)? It looks correct in the Sent folder. It also looks correct in the To: line of the headers on the same message that has the error in the body. It has not happened in recent replies for other places, so it's unlikely to be an Apple bug. Yet if the encoding header is missing, odd that the headers are correctly rendered differently. |
Dead battery screen @ usable battery % Posted: 24 Jul 2021 01:01 PM PDT This is a 2020 13-inch MBP on 10.15.7. It's already had its logic board replaced once. I have had this issue a few times. I keep getting the dead battery screen: But when I plug it in, it turns on straight away and the battery is at a usable percentage. This time the battery was at ~54%. The fix is simple and quick: plug it in to a socket for a second, wait for it to turn on & unplug it. Is this a known bug? Do I have some other hardware issues that need addressing? |
Spotlight Indexing of Google Drive File Stream Disabled on Restart Posted: 24 Jul 2021 06:55 PM PDT I recently got issued a Macbook Air M1, 2020 running macOS Big Sur 11.2.3. I rely on Google Drive file stream for my work and I have so far managed to successfully install the program. However, it seems I am having problems indexing the drive with Spotlight. Spotlight does not automatically index the drive, and I need to run: There are separate instructions for installing GDFS on an M1 Mac, but since my install worked pretty seamlessly I didn't boot into recovery mode or anything like it suggests in there. I'm wondering if allowing user management of kernel extensions will help this problem, as I'd rather not tamper too much with this work computer. |
How to turn off new popup for spell checking in Word for Mac on macOS 11.3 Posted: 25 Jul 2021 12:01 AM PDT After the last macOS update, a popup started appearing when you click on a misspelled word in Word for Mac. This is a very frustrating function when you work in several different languages not always wanting to spell-check even though the red underscoring is good as a reminder. Hence, I want to keep the previous functionality to get suggestions when right-clicking on an underscored word but would really want to turn this popup function off. Does anyone know how this could be done? The only option I've found is to turn spell-checking as you write off completely, which also removes the red underscoring that I'd like to keep. |

How to save picture viewed in iOS Safari to Files (iCloud) Posted: 24 Jul 2021 03:03 PM PDT Open safari, browse to a page with images, press and hold on the image, select "Share..." tmutil command to install a new larger Time Machine disk, copying old backups to it Posted: 24 Jul 2021 07:08 PM PDT My old Time Machine backup drive (external USB) is now almost full. I have purchased a larger drive and want to switch to it for Time Machine, migrating all my old backups to the new drive's archive. I presume that I start by copying the Time Machine archive from the old backup drive to the new one. Then it seems I need to use The iMac runs OS 10.13 (High Sierra). |
Can't seem to remove or alter website blocking restrictions on iPhone 6 Posted: 24 Jul 2021 05:03 PM PDT having given my daughter an old iPhone 6 (latest ios12) to use around the house I'm struggling to unblock certain websites. The error messages are slightly different whether in Safari directly or an in-app browser - In-app browser says 'You cannot browse this page at "...." because it is restricted' Safari says 'Safari cannot open the page. The error was: "The URL was blocked by a content filter".' She was previously using a 1st gen iPad mini (ios9) and has her own limited/child Apple ID. On the iPad she would attempt to visit a website and upon being notified it was blocked, you could click a link to enter the parental password and unblock that site. Since restoring onto the iPhone it seems some of those restrictions have been passed on, in that some sites are accessible but others aren't. The problem is that when seeing an inaccessible site on iOS12, there is no direct link to unblock it. Screen time was not set up initially, however upon turning this on, and either setting content restrictions to completely disabled, or having it enabled but having web contact set to unrestricted, or having web content limited but with specific urls in the 'always allow' section, I'm seeing the same behaviour whatever I do. Where else can I adjust these types of settings? Edit: I've noticed in settings/safari that favourites are greyed out and set to 'allowed sites' I can view any site which is already listed in favourites but cannot find anywhere to edit the favourites. |
MacMini 2009 fan sensor goes to zero after 1500RPM Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:26 PM PDT This might be pretty obvious that the sensor is bad and I need a replacement, but this sensor is very hard to get here in Brazil, so I'm hoping there's a way to fix the RPM sensor of the MacMini Late 2009. Sometimes the fan lost it's reading and the speed tops maximum with an annoying noise. I noted this happens when in fact the fan needs to speedup. So I stressed the CPU to get a higher RPM on the fans and this is what happens. When the machine is idle, it behaves as expected: In fact I've changed the default hard disk for and SSD drive, upgraded to 8GB of RAM an installed a patched version of Catalina, since it's non supported, pretty "standard" thing to do on this old machines. So my question is, anyone have a similar situation? Any workaround or fix? And I must answer: can it be related with the installation of an unsupported release of macOS? EDIT: That's really a hardware issue, this happens on a Linux install that I've made on the machine too. |

Mount folder as a volume (OSX) Posted: 24 Jul 2021 08:22 PM PDT Is it possible to (auto) 'mount' folders as Volumes? I have a large DAS Volume, 'Data', that contains all my data. To make paths shorter and more future proof, I'd like to have Volumes like /ContentTypeA/ /ContentTypeB/ Instead of using /Data/ContentTypeA/ /Data/ContentTypeB/ etc, which is where the data actually resides. Any ideas on how to do that? It's not a big problem. Just curious. |
Compass in maps and app always wrong Posted: 24 Jul 2021 04:36 PM PDT When I use the direction in maps the direction is almost always ~90° off, occasionally it will be 135-180° wrong but mostly it looks like I'm travelling sideways. The phone is flat. Is there something wrong with the hardware? Or can I manually calibrate it (like tell it to offset by 90°)? Or tell it to ignore the compass and just use the direction of travel. Also the compass app gives the wrong direction but it doesn't even match the incorrect direction in maps. For example I was travelling along this road, away from the motorway. |
Installing gnuplot (or similar) on Lion Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT All the packages needed to install gnuplot through MacPorts on Lion succeed, except for aquaterm. Installing gnuplot through Fink is far less lucky on Lion. Fink bails out after only a third of the packages needed for gnuplot have been installed, but Fink does install aquaterm. Is there a way to 'port install gnuplot' while pointing MacPorts to the aquaterm installation generated by Fink? Also nice would be to know of a method to install gnuplot on Lion that uses neither Fink nor MacPorts. Learning about a replacement for gnuplot itself on OSX would be handy. |
Are there any native tools for SVG conversion on OS X? [closed] Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT How can I convert SVG image to something raster? Are there any native [command-line] tools on OS X that can do that? I am able to open them in Safari or Firefox, but doing "Save as..." only proposes original (.svg) or web-archive formats and no rasterized image format. |
iOS Developer Tools & Utilities (must haves and nice to haves) [closed] Posted: 24 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT I'm new to Mac's in general and iOS development. I've used an iPhone and iPad, and I'm looking to write apps for both. I'm a (newly) registered Apple developer and have Xcode downloaded and working my through it. My question is this: Are there any third party tools that iOS developers with more experience than I (which is everyone) uses? Example, in the Windows world I use
