| How does apple mail deal with 2FA Posted: 18 Jul 2021 12:34 AM PDT I recently set up 2fa and chose google authenticator as the second method. My email accounts are outlook, gmail and icloud. After setup I experienced what was expected, by which I mean a trade-off between convenience and security. I have struggled with outlook & thunderbird for example, my credentials (app password) expires every now and then, so I have to update every so often or just use a web browser. Gmail seems to be more stable but that isn't my question here. Mail on iphone (SE 2020, os 14.6) always works at first setup, never failing, despite only knowing my login password (each three providers). What is going on here? Am I dealing with a feature or a vulnerability? Here is what I've considered but failed to query here or on google. A) the smart phone connects to the server very often, therefore the app password does not expire B) the smart phone always looks up one-time passwords on google authenticator, performing repeated logins that I do not see C) the smart phone is a "trusted device" that can somehow ignore 2fa If this is a vulnerability, I would like to know if it is serious. If it is a feature, are there methods to implement it on other devices (e.g. ubuntu pc) |

| Installing Windows 10 on Old Macbook Air Mid 2011 version. After Install, I see only windows logo Posted: 18 Jul 2021 12:47 AM PDT MacBook Air Mid 2011, Win 10 I have created another partition using bootcamp, followed some video how to install on old macbook so had issues but all of those issues are sorted now. I saw windows was installed ( setup and it finished all installation and then it rebooted and then I see Windows Logo, I waited for many hrs but nothing ) I am not sure even what debug info should I provide ? I have downloaded Win 10 ISO from Microsoft site and there was issue with Bootcamp where I have to edit a file to make Bootcamp work for Win 10 version and then another issue came when USB drive where I was downloading, it was always failing because of file size limit ( some file was over 4GB and FAT/exFAT has 4GB limit on file so I found out another video where big file was spilit into 2 so another ISO file was created where bigfile was split in two files. All that worked fine and installation went fine but what I need to fix this issue ? Since there is error displayed so not sure what to look for ? I have also tried resetting NVRAM, it helped to move forward since I saw some windows configuring but later on it crashed and now same thing. https://teching.nl/2017/03/bootcamp-windows-10-stuck-on-logo/ |
| App deletes all progress after closing Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:45 PM PDT I recently downloaded the game "Lost City" from Apple Arcade and after closing the app it deleted all my progress. At first I thought it was a one time thing but it happened the next time too (and for the other four times I tried it). I really don't know how can I fix it because it basically makes the game unplayable. I tried a few things:
Also, Game Center saved my achievements and high score, IDK if it's relevant but it's something. I'm out of ideas, any help? |
| No internet access when Internet Sharing through Mac mini, but MacBook Pro works fine Posted: 17 Jul 2021 01:24 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac mini. I can share my internet connection fine from my MacBook Pro, but it doesn't seem to work as well when I'm trying to share the same connection from my Mac mini. My goal is to share an Ethernet connection plugged into the Mac mini as a WiFi network that my phone can then connect to. This worked just fine on my MacBook Pro. However, when I connect to the Mac mini's network and connect to it via my phone, nothing loads implying that there is no internet connection. I have tried various sources/sinks for my internet connection. Sources for my MacBook Pro included connecting an Ethernet cable from a switch connected to my router through a Thunderbolt 3 dock and through a USB adapter. Sinks included sharing as a WiFi connection and sharing through iPhone USB. All of these combinations worked for me and my iPhone could connect to the internet. I tried using the same sources and sinks (except I was able to plug the Ethernet cable directly into the 2014 Mac mini), and even used the same exact USB-Ethernet adapter on the mini, but whenever I connect the iPhone to the created WiFi network or USB cable, it is simply unable to connect to the internet. I have verified that the Ethernet allows me to connect to the internet on my Mac mini. However, when sharing the same exact ethernet connection through Internet Sharing, it doesn't seem to work. What could be the issue on the Mac mini that doesn't allow a created network to reach the Internet? Mac mini's network settings (it's connect to the switch from both the built-in Ethernet port and the USB-Ethernet adapter) Internet sharing settings on Mac mini: When I click "WiFi Options" to configure the created WiFi network Message I get when trying to access Google from Safari while connected to the above WiFi network To me it seems like I'm using the same exact settings on my MacBook Pro (except the "Security type" is different, as shown below), but on |

| Secure erased drive - always one file can be found Posted: 17 Jul 2021 01:58 PM PDT I've been going through some old HD drives, secure erasing before sending to recycle. I periodically run Disk Drill over one of them, just to make sure I'm doing the job right. No matter whether I do the 'quick' secure or the full-blown two day multiple run, Disk Drill always manages to find one plist file… apparently the same file each time, or very similar. It appears to be some drive spec & prefs. Could this be something to do with the EFI partition, generated as part of the new format, rather than anything left over from the old? I honestly can't think of any reason it should always be able to find this & nothing else - oddly, even if the drive was previously NTFS. All the secure wipes are to GUID/HFS+, whatever they were formatted before. EFI is my only logical conclusion. |
| How to run bootcamp when os is on external ssd? [duplicate] Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:31 PM PDT I have a late 2015 iMac, the internal drive was very slow so I erased it and am running everything from an external ssd. All my files I have are on the external ssd and the internal one is empty. I made a partition 500gb on my external ssd and want to run windows on that partition. Im following this official apple tutorial that suggests using bootcamp. However When bootcamp start and I click on continu it says to first remove all external storage. However im running osx from the only attached external drive (the ssd). How can I run bootcamp when im running my os from an external partition? |
| EasySMX game controller on Big Sur Posted: 17 Jul 2021 09:31 AM PDT I am using a wired (via a 2.4GHz dongle) EasySMX game controller on my MacBook Pro (Late 2016). It has worked for years, but is no longer detected after upgrading to Big Sur. I hear that it won't work, but perhaps this is just via bluetooth for the similar XBox controller? Is there some way to completely reinstall it and get it working? |

| Intel iMac freezes halfway through boot Posted: 17 Jul 2021 09:20 AM PDT After a recent power cut, my late 2018 iMac can't seem to complete a normal boot process. About halfway through the booting progress bar, it hangs and doesn't make any more progress. What I've tried so far:
I've read through this similar thread here. But it's very old and nothing in there helped. |

| 'stuff' subcommand not effective in 'screen' session until it has been attached Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:00 PM PDT In macOS Catalina 10.15.7, screen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06: I'm attempting to use the 'screen' command (/usr/bin/screen) to run a program in the background. I create a detached screen session to run my program, then I use screen's 'stuff' subcommand to send the program a command. But the program never sees that command. If I attach to the session and then detach, 'stuff' works as I expect. How can I make 'screen' forward the command to the program without attaching first? This is used to spin up a number of processes without user intervention, so attaching and stealing the terminal focus is not an option. Here's a minimal example: (Note: I sent this to Ask Different because Apple uses a very old version of 'screen' which AFAIK is not used on any other platform.) |

| How do I run diagnostics on an iPad Pro 11 with nonfunctioning screen and touch? Posted: 17 Jul 2021 01:04 PM PDT I have an 1st generation iPad Pro 11 with a broken screen with no video image and unresponsive to touching. I would like to run some hardware diagnostics on it before committing to replacing the screen. So far, I've managed to successfully clean and reinstall iPadOS 14.2 by tethering it to my MacBook Pro using a USB cable. I'm able to see the initial iOS setup screen via QuickTime, but can't proceed any further without a functioning touch screen. Is there an alternative input device I can use? Also, is there any diagnostic mode or software utility available for testing the device's hardware? |
| Macbook Pro two external display, one keeps blinking/turn-black Posted: 17 Jul 2021 02:00 PM PDT I recently set up 2 external displays to my MacBook Pro, 2017. 1 monitor is a Samsung 27" 4k, the second one is Dell 28" LCD. The Samsung is connected with this adapter and another one with this. The Samsung display works perfectly, no issue at all. But the Dell, from time to time turns to black or starts to blink and eventually turns to black as well. In the end, I need or remove the cable from the MacBook or turn the display off and turn it on again. Any idea how I can handle this issue? If more information is needed I will be happy to provide it. Computer info: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports, 16 GB RAM) OSx version: 10.14.6 Thanks in advance UPDATE 11.2.1 the issue was fixed. |

| Can a Mail.app smart mailbox take *nesting* into account? Posted: 17 Jul 2021 11:05 AM PDT I'm using the fairly old version 9.3 of Mail.app on a computer running El Capitan; I just set up my Gmail account with it, and it seems to be correctly syncing. For organization purposes, I would love to have a smart mailbox that simply contains every message not in another specific mailbox (edit: that is, a folder), which I'll call A. The problem is that I don't keep any messages directly in A -- I keep them in A's sub-mailboxes (sub-folders) B, C, etc, and the sub-sub-mailboxes of those in turn. So the smart mailbox is not very useful. Is there any way I can make my dream a reality: A mailbox that only lists messages that are not inside Mailbox A at any level? |
| Posted: 17 Jul 2021 09:08 PM PDT Whenever I try to proceed with the bootcamp installation or click the download windows support software option from the action menu, it throws me that error. I've googled this problem and made sure I have a strong wifi connection, plugged in my Macbook while doing this, am running the latest Catalina version and apart from the current windows 10 iso on the microsoft website, tried using older versions of windows 10. Nothing helped. |

| How do I drag a text box in Preview? Posted: 17 Jul 2021 07:00 PM PDT When using Preview, I can create a text box to add text on top of a PDF. However, the text box is not always created in the correct area. I find that I can use the Arrow Keys to move the text box. Or, I can stretch the text box with my mouse and pointer. However, I cannot move the text box using my mouse. What am I missing? How do I do that? Apple's reference says, "To move the text box, just drag it." But, I haven't figured out how to do that. |
| Thunderbolt cable that only works as USB 3.1 Posted: 17 Jul 2021 11:04 PM PDT I have an LG 5k Ultrafine screen which does not work when connected to my Macbook Pro 2018. Before thinking that the screen may not be working, it could be that the cable which isn't working. In order for it to work, it must be a Thunderbolt 3 cable, which I know it is (I bought it and it used to work with the screen). I plugged the cable Macbook <> Different USB-C device and it did work, however it Apple -> About this Mac -> System Report, the device only gets shown in the USB 3.1 bus instead of the Thunderbolt section. Are there ways to test if the cable that I have is a working Thunderbolt 3 cable? |
| Linking between tables in different spreadsheets in Numbers Posted: 17 Jul 2021 10:04 AM PDT I wonder if it's possible to link tables from different spreadsheets. I have several live projects running at the same time, for each I have a "Project finance" sheet, in which I have different tabs (Labour cost, Material cost, Project summary). I would like to create a SUMMARY sheet with all my project, where I can link/mirror copy the project summary tables from all my projects. This needs to be "live", i.e. as we make changes in the project finance sheets (as the projects progress), on this summary table it would update automatically. In Google sheet this is the formula I would use, but I only recently started using Numbers and I couldn't find anything similar in there. You can basically create a "live carbon copy" this way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
| How to see count of unread emails from the Mail app in the Mac OS menu bar? Posted: 17 Jul 2021 06:01 PM PDT What's the best way to see the count of unread emails from the Mail app in the Mac OS menu bar? (Bonus points if I can use it to open the Mail app as well.) I don't really use the Dock, and I've gotten used to apps like Airmail and Fantastical that use the Mac OS menu bar to show information, like e.g. the count of unread emails. The best I could find after a quick search was https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22042/mail-unread-menu (from this thread), which looks like it hasn't been updated in ~6 years and might not work without also installing the MailPluginFix plugin. Is that really the best way to do this? I'm using Mojave. |
| Using tkinter with Catalina, how to avoid deprecation warning? Posted: 17 Jul 2021 08:11 PM PDT I want to use the tkinter GUI library with python3 and Catalina 10.15.1, but I get a deprecation warning. I looked at this answer but Is there a straightforward way to get tkinter to work, or is a different GUI library the recommended way to go? (I'm a bit worried that if I start installing new Python versions, I'll end up breaking other things.) |
| Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:12 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running 10.13.6 and I am now getting "Bluetooth: Not Available" in the menu bar. I also cannot access the "Bluetooth" section within System Preferences. Under "Network" in System Preferences it says "Bluetooth PAN is not connected" and "No PAN devices found". Under System Report, it says "No Information Found" under Bluetooth. I have tried the following in an effort to troubleshoot:
What other options do I have to troubleshoot this? If this is a hardware issue, do you have a recommendation for a Bluetooth USB adapter that I can use to limp by with? |
| Posted: 17 Jul 2021 08:01 PM PDT I got a message from my Mac IDrive app that there has been no backup for four days. The message says the most common cause is the Mac being turned off, but my Mac is always on and connected. IDrive has been working fine for months. IDrive support suggested that I upgrade to version 3.5.1.5 but that's what I have, and they haven't responded further. There's no clue in the logs; it just says "Backup operation failed" at the end after listing files for backup. I Have paid for a years service. Is there a way to troubleshoot this other than requesting another support ticket? |
| Posted: 17 Jul 2021 06:37 PM PDT While prepping for the switch to a new computer, I made the dreadful decision to move files from the "All My Files" Finder view to a new folder. All of the files moved to the new folder, but left the old folders in all of the previous locations (now with no files in them). I've completely lost the file structure that organized all of the files into something meaningful. I didn't realize my mistake until it was too late to "Undo". Is there any way to look up the previous location of a list of files?

| Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:02 PM PDT I've got a 2015 iMac running Yosemite, attached via HDMI to a 1080p TV, in extended desktop mode that I use simultaneously as a video server/media player and an occasional work machine. In short, I'd like to sleep the internal display but not the external on demand. More detail: I'd like to be able to run a video player (Plex) in full screen mode on the TV (Screen 2), but set the internal display (Screen 1) to automatically sleep if I'm not doing anything else on the computer but playing video on Screen 2. Apps like Plex have an option to blank the other screen, but that doesn't work here, as I'd like to be able to use Screen 1 some of the time. I used to make this work on my old Mac Pro by simply turning the computer monitor off but leaving the TV on, but that's not an option with the iMac. Something akin to an off switch (or hotkey) for the the internal display (that doesn't disable the desktop) would be perfect, as I often remotely control Screen 1 from another computer while video is playing on Screen 2. Have tried SwitchResX, which is great, but it doesn't seem to have the right combination of settings/features to meet my goals (or I've failed to figure them out). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! |
| How to hide Gmail labels in Apple Mail? Posted: 17 Jul 2021 03:04 PM PDT When searching for mail in Mail.app with a Gmail account, every instance of the mail shows up with every Gmail label, especially in the Bin label, since Apple mail autosaves drafts as you go along, there can be 50 instances of a single mail just in the Bin folder. This makes searching impossible. So I'm trying to turn off those labels in Gmail but no success so far. I have disabled "Show in IMAP" option in the Gmail label settings for all those labels then deleted all the cached items in ~/Library/Mail/V2 and restarted Mail.app but that didn't do the trick. |
