MAC Big Sur - Mission Controll half disabled

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 12:16 AM PDT

I got a MacBook Pro from the company I work for.

MacBook Pro 2019 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7

I'm having trouble with Mission Control that after a while of using it, it disables some features. I can still open it up and select an different application. But I cant move windows around neither can I access other Desktop's. If I hove over an window in mission control the blue border doesn't appear anymore. A Restart of the MacBook fixes it but I can't restart my Laptop every 30min....

Does anyone know this issue?

Using OS Sierra 10.12.6 Mac desktop and iPhone SE

I have just updated my iPhone SE to 14.7.1 and now my Mac desktop running Sierra 10.12.6doesn't show any photos to import from the phone. Does this update mean I can no longer transfer photos from the phone?

Multiple tabs in apple notes

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 08:55 PM PDT

is there a way to open multiple notes in apple notes at the same time. It is the app I use for note taking at the moment (I keep changing but recently I've been using apple's default apps) and if I need to refer to another note, I need to access that note, exit it and go back to my original note. Is there a way to open tabs in them like in apple pages. Thanks!

macOS Mojave (10.14.6) + iTunes 12.9 + iOS 13.4.1 - Cannot, at all, transfer ringtones to device

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 04:15 PM PDT

Yes, I tried dragging them into the Tones screen. Yes, I tried copypasting them in there instead. Yes, I tried removing them all and adding them back. Yes, I tried deleting the .plist config file inside the folder. Yes, I even tried deleting the one outside the folder. But still no dice. Nothing even showed signs of a transfer being supposed to take place. :( Does any of you kindly know anything else I could try?

tmutil remove old timemachine backups but does not free space

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 02:33 PM PDT

I have BigSur 11.2.3 and my TimeMachine ran out of space, so I was trying to delete old backups from storage for some extra spaces.

As usual, here is list of backup enter image description here

I ran sudo tmutil delete -d /Volumes/Sabrent -t 2021-08-08-170818 and it was successful. enter image description here I go into Finder and verified enter image description here

yet, the storage still has same amount of space taken by something invisible (I assume the backup did not get deleted)

It seems like the command only deleted shortcut or pointer to the backup files not the backup itself.

enter image description here

The command used to work with previous macOS, i searched a while on google, but did not find any useful solution. Does anyone know how to properly delete a timemachine backup now? or maybe a useful GUI tool?

What is the difference between /Library/QuickTime/ and /Library/Components/

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 02:11 PM PDT

In legacy versions of OS X (e.g. Snow Leopard), QuickTime supported third-party video components. For example, it was possible to play files encoded with the UT Video codec by copying the third-party utv_qt.component to either Library/Components/ or Library/QuickTime/.

Both folders existed by default in the root Library folder (although not in the user Library folder).

What is the difference between these two folders? Are they, in fact, completely identical? Should I prefer to keep third-party QuickTime components in one location over the other?

(I've created my own QuickTime component to play HEVC and VP9, and I want to know where to recommend other users install it.)

Why can't I add my non-gmail Google account to iPhone?

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 01:43 PM PDT

I tried to add my Google account to iPhone in order to see my calendar in the iOS Calendar app. However the Settings app just went back to the previous page, without any error message. What's going on?

If it's relevant, my Google account is not a gmail address.

Is it possible to view video/audio information in finder or a similar program

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 01:00 PM PDT

From what I can see finder cannot display codec, resolution, bitrate, basic metadata about batches of video and audio files that would be really helpful.

As there any way to achieve this or a program that can do it in bulk, I searched and did not find anything online specific to macOS.

How can I force delete files in the trash? [duplicate]

Macos version is big sur . How can I force delete everything in the trash ?

Flattening/extracting from folders with duplicate file names in correct order, is this possible in finder/terminal/any app?

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:39 PM PDT

I know the trick of command F and searching within multiple folders to copy paste and get out different named files from folders quickly, but I often come across horrible folders like this with the same file names inside:

enter image description here

If I try that trick, it will warn me about overwriting, if I do it by track pad dragging, it's very slow, is there any way I can extract them in the correct order and add a name, I searched commercial products and found nothing that would do it.

Editing/correcting "Places" in macOS Photos

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 04:10 PM PDT

I have about 300 images taken here at "Home" as labeled in macOS Photos (v 6.0, Big Sur) but when I look at "Places" they are scattered all over the place. I have 1 photo stack with 20 photos that seems to be in the front yard, another 25 out in the back yard, 17 that are slightly down the street but I know were taken inside, etc.

In previous versions of Photos and iPhoto, I thought that you were able to edit what Photos considered a "Place." It gave you the option to expand the radius for a particular place, allowing you to group pictures together with that place name.

Is there a way to do this in the current version of Photos? It's very difficult to have to try to expand each stack to look for a photo. If I just type in "Home" it shows most of the photos, but since a few of them are down the street a bit, it misses them.

It seems to be a matter of GPS being off by 50' here and there, but it would be nice to be able to gather all of my "Home" photos on a location that I choose, like I was able to before.

Edit: Here's a screenshot of the view I'm referring to. Places view

For example, all of those photos should be at 1 location, but they are kind of scattered around. I cannot select them all with Cmd-A, and Select All is greyed out.

Edit: According to this older link I might not be able to even do this in Photos. I can add a location if a photo doesn't have one, but can't change it if location already exists. I may need a separate tool to do this.

Understanding the activity monitor of mac

I am trying to understand each field of activity monitor to understand my process usage.
But I am not able to wrap my heads around few things.

Restore Time Machine backup

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:51 PM PDT

I want to restore from my Time Machine backup.

My Time Machine backups where saved on a QNAP NAS. After a clean install (forgot password) of my MacBook, I wanted to reinstall from my Time Machine backups. This was not possible because the file was corrupted. I couldn't fix it with Disk Utility nor CLI. Disk Warrior was able to fix the file (xxx.backupbundle).

When I now want to install from my Time Machine backup (295 GB), I can select the backup but it seems empty. The same thing happens when I try Migration Assistant.

On this Mac I am still running Catalina.

Is there a possibility to retrieve the files out of the (xxx.backupbundle) or is there any other solution to get my files back?

trying to install mojave on another volume

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:16 PM PDT

i was following the instructions in the bottom part of this question:

Can Mojave be installed on separate APFS volume under Catalina?

I've created a partitioned separate volume (named portal) and followed all the steps, but when I put in the command in terminal in recovery mode

$ /volume/mac/users/bluelina/portaling/Install\ macOS\ Mojave.app/Contents/Resources/startosinstall --volume /Volume/portal

it says command not found

i could not find a way to put the mojave installer directly under /mac/ hence the longer code. i've tried deleting .app from behind mojave because the name of the file is just mojave. it's the file i downloaded from the app store, it says it's an 'alias' so i'm hoping that's the right kind of file

i'm just trying to get an older OS so I can play portal again, if that was unclear from how i named the directories

What is the randomness of Apple generated passwords?

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 04:02 PM PDT

Today I was reading about an issue with the Kaspersky Password generator (https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1412411435842519049.html). They had an issue where the seed used was the epoch time in seconds which is a very insecure method. I was curious about the strength of the strong passwords generated by Apple. I haven't been able to find any details on the process Apple uses to generate their passwords. However, I did find something that really bothers me when I looked at my saved passwords. I sorted my saved passwords alphabetically and found that the exact same generated password was used on three completely different websites. The passwords are 18 characters long so this is not random chance. The passwords were created in different years on different times of day. This brings up a couple of questions:

-First, does anyone else see this issue?

-Does Apple have any info on the password generation process?

Terminal cd .. TAB does not add slash

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 02:24 PM PDT

When using the terminal to navigate through my files I was used to be able to type

cd .. TAB where the TAB would add the / at the end of the .. and I could just continue typing. Now, on big sur, this does not work anymore. When I type cd .. and TAB the screen just flashes once and that's it, I always have to type the /

Can anybody help how to get the old behavior?

Disk Space taken up by misc/other - not TimeMachine

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 05:07 PM PDT

I have OS X 10.15.7 running on a 500GB SSD and OmniDiskSweeper, GrandPerspective and System Information show that I have used about 270GB but only have about 30GB free. OmniDiskSweeper just counts what is there, but GrandPerspective shows 191GB of "Miscellaneous used space" (big grey box on the side) and System Profiler lists it as 'Other'. I know I should have loads of space because I moved my Photos library to an external disk and I was sitting at over 100GB at that point, but in the months since then it has ticked away.

I've tried tmutil listlocalsnapshots / but nothing shows up.

Something curious but possibly unrelated things

1: the disk drive has that second partition "- Data" and it is listed as 500GB too. It may be just me misinterpreting the read out, or poor interface design on Apple's part. The reason I mention this is that Disk Xray Lite also seems confused about disk space, claiming I have used 536GB, presumably because it has counted System > Volumes > Data > Users as well as Users, despite them appearing to be the same thing.

2: I replaced ~/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backup with an Alias that is to an external drive. I think it only backs up when that drive is plugged in, but maybe it is writing to 'other'

Folder won't delete from Trash for "Can't delete "_ImageItems" because its pathname is too long"

I'm trying to empty my trash on my iMac. When I do, I can detete everything but 1 folder. The one folder seems to reference itself infinitely. Each time I click on the expander chevron, I get another folder of the same name with the same date. When I created _ImageItems, there was only one level.

I've attached some screen clipsToo Long Error.

iPhone App Store: can I install free apps using Face ID instead of my Apple ID password?

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 07:34 PM PDT

The App Store prompts me for my password for every free app I am trying to install. I have already Face ID setup for the App Store, can I use it instead? Or even the phone's passcode?

On my Macbook I have disabled the password prompt for free apps, but I'm not sure whether that's device specific.

I have tried restarting the phone and disabling Face ID for the App Store.

Install Windows10 on older mac with boot camp does not provide install option

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 07:01 PM PDT

I'm trying to install Windows10 on my old MBP (Model: MacBookPro10,1). I prepared a USB-Stick formatted as FAT32 with a MBR. I followed this documentation (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/bootcamp-assistant/bcmp09f5f773/6.1/mac/10.14) and Step 4 says:

At the Select Tasks step, select all the tasks, then click Continue.

But in my case, the last task is not available. What do I need to do?

I'm running macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6 (all updates are installed) on that machine.

Best way to connect Remote Mac with audio from Mac or PC

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 05:33 PM PDT

I am in a need of a solution, where I can remotely connect from my PC/Mac to remote Mac Pro or Mac mini with audio coming from it. I will be using VPN to access Remote Mac, so I couldn't get Airfoil working for me (correct me if I missed something from the tool). I went through several tools such as nuoRDS, SoundFlower (didn't work on Catalina), VNC Pro (paid one also didn't work for macOS).

Any ideal solution that would help me as I am looking for 10-15 users. So purchasing one tool or a year license would be a solution too but per month, per user, per session is quite out of context.

Please suggest anything that you recommend, I will test it.

Does Sys Prefs > Software Upgrade > "Automatically keep my Mac up to date" automatically install Catalina on a Mac running Mojave?

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 04:49 PM PDT

Given a Mac running macOS Mojave, does turning on the checkbox "Automatically keep my Mac up to date" in System Preferences > Software Update mean that Catalina will automatically be installed?

I want only minor updates and security patches to be installed automatically, not the major OS upgrades. I do not yet want to step up to Catalina.

screenshot of Sys Prefs > Software Upgrade > "Automatically keep my Mac up to date" panel

I found this useless Apple support page about the Advanced panel that simply repeats the text of the checkboxes' labels as a pseudo-explanation. (Tip: Click the Helpful? > No button at bottom of that page as feedback to Apple.)

"open with" default app not working

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 02:00 PM PDT

Mac OS 10.14.3 [Mojave]:

QuickTime Player is set as the default app for Finder's "open with" for .mp4 files on my Mac. This is what I want. But when I double-click an mp4 file, the kid3 app [a tag editor] launches instead of Quicktime Player!?

Why and how is kid3 invisibly hijacking the default app for "open with" for mp4 files? I found nothing related to this in kid3's preferences.
