Finder preferences are ignored

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 11:14 PM PDT

After installing the latest version of the driver for my AmazonBasics USB-Ethernet Adapter my Finder sidebar has removed a bunch of folders and I can't figure out how to get them back.

I checked my preferences and everything is still listed.

How do I get them back?

Preferences vs Actuals

I am running macOS 11.5 on a macbook pro (mid-2015).

Reminders: prevent app quit on CMD+W

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 06:19 PM PDT

I'm used to closing only the open windows when pressing CMD+W. However, when all Reminders windows are closed, the application itself quits.

How to prevent this behavior?

Both for reminders and notes?

How can I browse or search any alert tones (notification sounds, contrary to ringtones) in the official store other than those ~50 displayed up front?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 04:30 PM PDT

When I open the "ringtone store" directly from inside the iPhone settings for ringtones, there is a special section available for alert tones, rather than ringtones (which will end up in the "alert tone" list in iOS if you purchase them, rather than in the ringtone list where ringtones will end up).

But there are only around 50 such alert sounds listed there (and most are soundbits from contemporary movies and similar, rather than your classical alert and notification sounds), and I cannot for the life of me find any way to expand this list? To make things even worse, when using the search feature in this store, the results never contain any alert tones at all, only ringtones?!

For a company that has seemingly locked down any possibility for users to add their own custom alert tones (or haven't they?), this seems even more crazy, so I'd be super happy if someone would tell me that I'm just blind and/or stupid, and that there is after all an easy way to both browse and search for lots of more alert tones in Apple's "tone store"?

Is there any possible way whatsoever to install your own (not purchased) custom "alert tone" / notification signal (not ringtones!) on an iPhone?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 03:29 PM PDT

I have a very simple question about custom alert tones on iPhones, which there doesn't seem to be any good Google hits for:

Is there any possible way whatsoever to install your own custom "alert tone" / notification signals (not ringtones!) on an iPhone?

And when I say "your own custom", I do not mean purchasing alert tones from the Apple store, but rather, importing them from whatever audio you have in your iTunes library, or somewhere else.

There are a lot of apps for making custom ringtones (including Garageband), but none of them seem to be able to save these as "alert tones" (notification tones) in iOS, but rather just ringtones.

The problem with this is that most other apps that allow you to customize their notification sounds (e.g. Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp etc), only allow you to choose from the "alert tones" list in iOS, rather than the "ringtones" list, which makes this distinction critical indeed.

There a lots and lots of tutorials and apps online that claim to be able to install custom alert tones / notification tones, but every single one that I have found end up installing a custom "ringtone" after all. :-(

If the answer to my question is "no", an extra bonus question would be: Why on earth would Apple lock down such a feature?

Convert multiple .mp3 files (or single .m4a) into .m4b with ffmpeg and afconvert on macOS

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 02:05 PM PDT

I'm using macOS and have a set of .mp3 files that represent the chapters of an audiobook. I want to combine them into a single .m4b file.

How can I do this from command line without significantly increasing file size?

Can I use iCloud for offline archive?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 11:33 PM PDT

I want to take about 50 Gb of files off my computer but have them stored in iCloud. (I will also keep a local offline hard drive archive of the same files – the iCloud piece is to give me an additional copy offsite in case of disaster like my house burning down.)

Try as I might, iCloud's basic functional model and the meanings of the host of status icons in the iCloud Drive finder windows have eluded me. It's still just not clear how I can designate an iCloud folder to not sync to any local copy on my Mac like the local iCloud Drive folder.

I will also want to continue to use iCloud's synch services to maintain local and cloud copies of other files such as those created in select applications and specified in the iCloud settings panel. So, a separate use case from my offline archive needs, and one that seems to be iCloud's default so no need for help on that. I just mention it for clarification in case iCloud will do manually manage offline archive OR automatic synching but doesn't provide for both on one Mac.

All the info I find on how iCloud works seems to cover the common backup/synch use case, but not the archive use case I also need.

I would love to find a clear, simple abstract of what iCloud's file handling model itself is, so that I could infer from that whether my offline archive use case is possible. No love on that front, so I'd be happy to find just an explicit description of how to do offline archiving instead.

Choosing OS X version for mid-2012 MacBook Air 6,2 with 4GB RAM (EMC 2559)

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 12:24 PM PDT

The situation

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Air 5,2 (13'' A1466 EMC 2559) that I plan to sell.

It is currently running OS X 10.7 Lion (for which Safari is obsolete). I want to upgrade it to a newer version, without compromising performance, as I want the buyer being happy with his purchase.

I'm looking for feedback from those who actually upgraded their MacBook Air 6,2 (mid-2012) with i5 and 4GB RAM to any of these versions: El Capitan / Sierra / High Sierra / Mojave.

Here are the specs:

  • i5 @ 1.8 Ghz
  • 4GB RAM (DDR3)
  • 384 MB VRAM
  • 500 GB SSD (replacement from 256 GB original one)

The generous graphic card, the SSD and the relatively fast processor should still make it a very decent computer for office use. It should run without problem a system like Windows 10. However, some users reported 4GB RAM being not enough for recent Mac OS X versions.

Result of my investigations so far

Officially, the MacBook Air 6,2 can be upgraded up to Catalina (10.15). However, you have to stay to Mojave (10.14) or below if you still want keeping the ability to run 32-bit apps.

I read here and there that some users of MacBook from 2012 encountered performance issues when upgrading to High Sierra and upper. However, I'm not sure if this is because they were possibly using MacBook Pro and consequently HDD (if no SSD upgrade done), since recent OS X versions are optimized for SSD, or if recent OS X versions are very RAM-hungry to run well.

With an SSD, i5 and 4GB RAM, I'm pretty confident that there should be no performance issues with OS X El Capitan (10.11). I have some doubt for OS X Sierra (10.12), and more doubt with OS X High Sierra (10.13) and Mojave (10.14).

Although I could clone the existing OS and come back to it in case of any perfomance issue, in order to save time I would prefer upgrading directly to the latest possible version known to be without performance issue. Thank you for your feeback.

How to lengthen the amount of time the display is at half brightness before sleep?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 11:32 AM PDT

When I leave my 2019 iMac idle, it first dims the display to about half brightness after about 10 minutes, and then turns the display completely off after about another minute. How can I change the amount of time the display is at half brightness for without affecting the amount of time it takes to enter this half-brightness state?

New SSD does not show in Disk Utility

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 02:42 PM PDT

I wanted to upgrade the internal SSD of my Mid 2013 MacBook Air. I bought a normal M2 SSD and an adapter.

The ssd is not shown by diskutil ls. The output of the command is shown in the screenshot.

Could it be, that the SSD is wrongly formatted or is the only possibility that either the adapter or the SSD itself is broken? I could check the SSD with a friend in the next couple of days.

Also, I am wondering about all the smaller disks shown in the output (disk 2 - disk 11). What are those?

Unable to claim free space for APFS partition Big Sur

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 05:26 PM PDT

I'm trying to add additional space to my macOS Big Sur. I've tried to do complete the process by using diskutil. Although I did not get any errors, I was unable to claim the free space.

Subsequently, I tried running the following command to increase the size of disk1 from 70.9 GB to 99 GB.

This command gave the following error:

diskutil apfs resizeContainer disk1 99g Started APFS operation Aligning grow delta to 28,073,046,016 bytes and targeting a new physical store size of 98,999,996,416 bytes Determined the maximum size for the targeted physical store of this APFS Container to be 107,163,398,144 bytes Error: -69519: The target disk is too small for this operation, or a gap is required in your partition map which is missing or too small, which is often caused by an attempt to grow a partition beyond the beginning of another partition or beyond the end of partition map usable space

How do I go about claiming the free space and expanding the size of disk1 from the current 70.9 GB to 99 GB without losing any existing data? I've seen a couple of related questions but could not really understand what exactly needs to be done in my situation.

Below are some additional details about my disk partitions.

diskutil list gives the following results:

My 10 days old MacBook Air M1 laptop is behaving abnormally i.e it's Keyboard Backlit light turns ON after I Shutdown my laptop or put it on sleep. The light starts flashing or becomes still. Is there an AppleScript command to zoom a sheet in Numbers?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 11:13 AM PDT

I think the answer to this question is "no", as I've not found any mention of it in the Numbers dictionary, but I thought I would ask here in case it's an undocumented feature.

I have a fairly large Table that I'm using AppleScript on. I'm running a script like this on it and have noticed it's very slow when the zoom level is low. When I set it to 400% it runs 100x faster.

repeat with i from 2 to the count of cells of column "E" set the value of cell i of column "E" to (the value of cell i of column "C") end repeat

So is there a way to automated this in AppleScript so that before I enter that repeat loop I can set zoom to 400%?

I would like to add that I can't use System Events in this case as I need it to happen in the background.

How to connect 2nd monitor to iMac 2020 without usb-c?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 07:19 PM PDT

My iMac 2020 reboots when 2nd monitor is connected via USB-c. I've been through apple support so many times! I gave my iMac to Apple Genius etc. Nobody at Apple is willing to admit that iMac has a malfunction. I've been struggling with it for over 8 months and I know for a fact that it reboots only when I connect any 2nd monitor! Apple thinks I should go to the monitor's manufacturer or to Adobe (since I use Photoshop). I know that this monitor works great with other computers and it's not the only monitor I tried with my iMac. But only my iMac reboots. So support essentially is useless for me and I have to deal with it by myself.

So I wonder is there any other way I can use a second monitor apart from connecting it via USB-c? Is it possible to use a Bluetooth dongle to my second monitor? Are there any other ways?

macOS crashes on any sound

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 01:00 PM PDT

My M1 Mac has started facing strange problems since yesterday. It would crash every 2-3 mins into login with a pink screen. What I have noted is that whenever I try to do something that has an audio output (notification, test sounds in settings, YouTube, auto-play videos on Facebook and LinkedIn), a crash happens. This happens even in safe mode. Here's the log:

This happens even when I have disabled sounds by muting it. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Edit: Reinstalled the OS, still facing the issue. Mostly a hardware issue. This happened very abruptly last night, not sure what changed.

How to turn your iMac's speakers into an output device for your Windows Laptop?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 12:01 PM PDT

I recently bought a Windows Laptop for gaming purposes and as usual the speakers suck. So, I was wondering if there's any way to use my iMac's speakers as an output device for my laptop, I researched a bit like there's some mirroring softwares and all but I could not find a proper way of making this possible.

Siri Keeps Trying to Redirect Me to Asana When I Edit a Note

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 02:31 PM PDT

Having trouble with Siri. It keeps thinking that editing a note (from the default Notes app) somehow involves the Asana app:

  • Me: "Siri, edit note"
  • Siri: "What would you like it to say?"
  • Me: "blah blah blah"
  • Siri: "You'll have to continue in Asana" [pops a yes/no dialog]

This applies to editing a note. Adding a new note works fine.

How do I get Siri to understand that editing a Note doesn't mean go to Asana?

Update

After deleting Asana, Siri started to contend it didn't have any apps to edit notes with.

After deleteing and reinstalling Notes, this behaviour continued.

I suspect the Asana bit is a red herring and Siri is having a problem with Notes.

Re-Downloading an app after switching Apple ID country: Does the old app data stay (stored files, level progress in games, ...)?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 02:05 PM PDT

I need to change the country of my Apple ID, and I already found that fortunately any apps that did cost money will be available for free download after I do this (as long as the app exists in my new country of course).

But I couldn't find out whether the data of the app is also kept when I redownload an app I already have on my device - like the progress in a game, any data that is stored like photos or documents etc.

Does anyone happen to know?

tar: Error opening archive: Failed to open when upgrade using brew

Using command line to activate Switch Control

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 09:50 PM PDT

To activate Switch Control in Settings, I click the checkbox located in Accessibility -> Switch Control -> Enable Switch Control (at least in Catalina). If I want a program to open Switch Control and automate that process, I have to navigate through the System Preferences app (which I could do with AppleScript). It would be nice if there were a command I could run in the terminal to directly open the Switch Control Panel application. I couldn't find one in my research.

What I tried:

I followed the instructions in this answer. If it had worked as I wanted it to, I could have changed the "Switch Control" setting by editing its corresponding .plist file (sudo defaults write). When I tried this approach with the example provided in the answer (changing "Display Login Window as:" from "List of users" to "Name and password") it worked well. It didn't work when I tested it by changing the "Enable Switch Control" setting.

Following the instructions, I made a copy of the preferences folder and the enclosed plist setting files:

$ sudo cp -r /Library/Preferences before

After changing the Switch Control setting and exiting System Preferences, I made a new copy:

$ sudo cp -r /Library/Preferences after

Next, to see which files changed, I tried:

$ sudo diff -ur before after

which doesn't return any "Binary files differ" messages.

I then tried to use the Activity Monitor to find out what programs run when "Enable Switch Control" is on. I found a running application named Assistive Control (AssistiveControl in Activity Monitor).

I ran $ ps aux and I found this under the COMMAND column:

/System/Library/Input Methods/Assistive Control.app/Contents/MacOS/Assistive Control launchd -s

When I try running the command with Switch Control off in System Preferences, it doesn't do anything. When I try the command when Switch Control is on, I get this error: invalid mode 'kCFRunLoopCommonModes' provided to CFRunLoopRunSpecific - break on _CFRunLoopError_RunCalledWithInvalidMode to debug. This message will only appear once per execution.

How can I use the command line to activate Switch Control?

It would be great if someone could help me out or give me suggestions.

External iSight camera with M1 Mac?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 05:36 PM PDT

I'm attempting to use a 2003-era external Apple iSight Camera with an M1 Mac mini via adapters:

iSight > FireWire 400 > FireWire 800 > Thunderbolt 2 > Thunderbolt 3

This same adapter chain works for video on a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro running macOS 10.15.6 Catalina. Audio required an additional fix, but is now also working on Intel.

On a new Apple Silicon M1 Mac mini, the video webcam does not seem to work. When first plugged in, it makes an autofocus sound and the green light turns on briefly.

Photo Booth is black and says:

There is no connected camera.

The FireWire Bus device is recognized by the M1 Mac's System Information:

System Information

Are there known FireWire support issues for either M1 Macs or macOS 11 Big Sur?

How can I use this iSight video webcam with my M1 Mac?

How to prevent even root users from uninstalling or tampering the application on macOS

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 12:55 PM PDT

The aim is to prevent even root users from uninstalling our app on their mac.

Apparently, many security applications have this sort of functionality wherein a user(even with root privilege) can not uninstall or tamper with the agent on their machine.

I tried tampering/deleting an antivirus app on Catalina but I failed and noticed a few interesting things:

  1. It has a kernel extension. But I can not remove the kernel extension(as root).
#kextunload /Library/Extensions/xxx.kext (kernel) Kext com.xxx.kext did not stop (return code 0x5). (kernel) Kext com.xxx.kext can't unload - module stop returned 0xdc008017. Failed to unload com.xxx.kext - (libkern/kext) kext (kmod) start/stop routine failed.
  2. The application is installed in /Library directory rather than the usual /Applications directory.
    drwxr-xr-x 7 root wheel 224 Oct 28 14:40 xxxx

The folder does not have any extended attributes. I can not delete this folder or any of its subfolders and getting permission denied error even as root.

  1. The app has a bunch of launchdaemons but I can not remove them (again tried as root)

#launchctl remove com.xxx.xxx. Not privileged to remove service.
  2. Tried killing the processes, again operation not permitted.

  3. The app comes with an uninstaller which can somehow uninstall the app, but it needs a special password (separate from system password) to be entered to work

Many of Apple's own apps and services have this sort of behavior but they come with the system and are backed up by System Integrity Protection.

How can a third-party app achieve this sort of behavior? This is not unique to this particular application but antivirus have similar sort of features. Any insight on how to achieve this..

Note: Ours is an enterprise app that will be installed on machines owned by the companies and managed by IT but end users will have root access on their machine.

Upgrading High Sierra to Catalina on 2016 MBP using local webserver

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 04:06 PM PDT

In the past colleagues (and I) believed it was often a bad idea to install newer OSs on older Macs. I get the feeling that has changed, and that putting Catalina on my 2016 MacBook Pro shouldn't be a problem.

What I'm wondering about is whether my local webserver will survive the upgrade. I have Apache/MySQL/PHP set up in the same approximate manner as we were told to do this years ago - sites running in /Library/WebServer/Documents, custom hosts and httpd-vhosts.conf files in /private/etc and so on. In past os upgrades and moves to new machines it's been necessary to re-set-up all that, which isn't a huge problem but also not a lot of fun.

In the past it helped that I was migrating to a new machine, so I had access to my whole old setup and could do things like export MySQL databases from the old and import into the new. This time I'm thinking about upgrading my existing machine so I won't have easy access to a backup while I'm doing this.

I hate the thought of buying a new machine just so I can upgrade the OS. On the other hand this is my work machine and it's 4 years old (and has a dead speaker) so perhaps it's time to bite the bullet.

Any of you experienced migrators have an opinion about which way I should go?

How do I turn off AirPods notifications in macOS?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 04:45 PM PDT

As of Big Sur, every time I open or unlock my Mac or walk over to it from being somewhere else I get this notification:

AirPods Nearby Notification Center Notification

AirPods
Nearby

I don't need it, dismissing it is a distraction and waiting for it to disappear is an obstruction to getting work done.

How and turn it off so I never get notifications about my Airpods?

Where can I find the APFS format documentation / volume specification?

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 11:14 PM PDT

One of my favorite Mac apps, DiskWarrior, has been waiting for the APFS format documentation (also called the APFS volume specification) for a while, in order to make a new program version which can rebuild APFS disks. Recently, according their page linked above, this documentation was released and Alsoft is using it to update DiskWarrior. I would like to look at this documentation myself, as I find it interesting. However, I can't find the documentation anywhere. Do I need a certain Apple subscription to see this documentation or am I simply failing at googling for it? I've found a few documents like this, but I don't think that's what I'm looking for, since that document is not as comprehensive as what I would expect from a full volume format specification.

"Play on" UPNP/DLNA device from OSX

Posted: 22 Aug 2021 04:43 PM PDT

I have a TV and an AV-receiver which are DLNA-capable and which are attached to my home network together with a Windows 7 desktop and a MBP running OSX Lion. I can access audio from both computers using a DLNA-server software on either computer (built in DLNA-server on Windows, PS3Media Server on OSX). So far this setup works fine and i can browse through my audio on the receiver.

However the TV and the receiver also act as UPNP/DLNA media renderer. For example I can use my phone to display photos on the TV (e.g. using the Twonky app on Android). On Windows, I can use Windows Media Player to play audio on either device without having to touch any remote control. I select the track/playlist I want to listen to, right click select "Play on" (maybe not the exact wording as my Windows is German) and select one of the two devices (e.g. the AVR for audio). Now I'm looking for the same for OSX. Either an application/media player which can use a media renderer as output device or an app which redirects all audio output to such a device. Does anybody know such software?
