trying to install mojave on another volume

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 09:38 PM PDT

i was following the instructions in the bottom part of this question:

Can Mojave be installed on separate APFS volume under Catalina?

I've created a partitioned separate volume (named portal) and followed all the steps, but when I put in the command in terminal in recovery mode

$ /volume/mac/users/bluelina/portaling/Install\ macOS\ Mojave.app/Contents/Resources/startosinstall --volume /Volume/portal

it says command not found

i could not find a way to put the mojave installer directly under /mac/ hence the longer code. i've tried deleting .app from behind mojave because the name of the file is just mojave. it's the file i downloaded from the app store, it says it's an 'alias' so i'm hoping that's the right kind of file

i'm just trying to get an older OS so I can play portal again, if that was unclear from how i named the directories

App Store app icon is duplicated in Lauchpad

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:38 PM PDT

Somehow, Apple's App Store app icons are duplicated in the Lauchpad on my MacBook Pro running macOS 11.5 (Big Sur). Since this is a system-level application, I cannot delete one of these redundant icons. I tried the strategies that I found on the Internet, i.e.,

  1. Remove ~/Library/Application Support/Dock/*.db
  2. Run defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool true
  3. Run killall Dock
  4. Restart the system

But these duplicated icons are still in Lauchpad after reboot. I am wondering how to remove one of them. Thanks a lot for your help!

Why won't macOS let me write files in a directory although it is write enabled and owned by me?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 06:32 PM PDT

I am stumped why I can't write into a directory for which I have all permissions:

>ll -d . drwxr-xr-x+ 1739 schwarz staff 55648 Aug 1 22:33 ./ >touch xx touch: xx: Permission denied

All higher-level directories have the same user permissions. The directory was copied via cp -rp from a TimeMachine backup.

Minimal/Oldest Mac OS that allows the green screen for the Zoom video app

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:43 PM PDT

What is the minimum oldest version of the Mac OS that allows the successful green screen for the Zoom video app?

I am asking the case with the camera on, with the person showing physical presence, and with the background JPG image of his/her own choice.

  • 10.10.5 Yosemite does not work for the green screen.

  • 10.11 High Sierra, does it work for the green screen?

  • 10.15 Catalina does work for the green screen.

How can I use AppleScript to change the sort view in Apple Mail?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:49 PM PDT

I'm running Apple Mail on Big Sur. I'd like to be able to sort my view by either Received From or Date From depending on my needs. Although I'm an experienced developer I'm struggling to figure out how to interpret the AppleScript dictionary for mail so as to actually be able to write short scripts.

I tried the following:

use AppleScript version "2.4" -- Yosemite (10.10) or later use scripting additions tell application "Mail" activate set viewer to the front message viewer set sort column of viewer to from column end tell

but that just gives me an "Mail got an error: AppleEvent handler failed" with no useful information other than the number -10,000 at the bottom of a dialog

Suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Can apple mail on iOS be used to configure server-side rules on exchange server

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:05 PM PDT

When using an Exchange mailbox, Exchange supports server-side rules to filter and sort mails automatically. This works on the server, so the client does not have to be online.

Those rules can be configured with Outlook and with Outlook Web Access, but can they also be managed used Apple Mail for Exchange mailboxes?

Unable to ssh over internet

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 11:11 AM PDT

I'm trying to ssh into a Linux server I run and I'm having a weird issue where I can ssh over the internal network but not over the internet. Over the internet, the ssh connection hangs at "connecting over port 22"

I have another computer (PC) that can successfully ssh into the server over internal and internet, so the problem is not with the server config.

To summarize:

# PC ssh -i key [user]@[internal ip] > Works ssh -i key [user]@[internet ip] > Works # MacBook ssh -i key [user]@[internal ip] > Works ssh -i key [user]@[internet ip] > Fails

Does anyone know what the issue might be?

Update: If I start an EC2 instance, I can SSH from my macbook into EC2, then from EC2 into my server. But trying to SSH directly from the macbook into the server still fails.

Is it true that Apple won't allow users to download full resolution photos from iCloud Photo to Windows computers?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:46 PM PDT

I have a subscription to the 50GB iCloud Photos. It contains 50GB of my photos. I hope to back up these photos to my Windows laptop. I've downloaded iCloud for Windows and synced the photos from iCloud Photos to my Windows laptop. However, I notice a big discrepancy between the total size of the photos I downloaded and the total size of the photos on iCloud (32GB on my Windows laptop vs 50GB on iCloud). I've contacted Apple Customer Support and reached a very arrogant rep. He told me that there's no way to backup the full resolution version to a PC. I need to buy a Mac to do that. Is that a sticky feature Apple uses to keep people on its ecosystem?

Trying to disable “ignore ownership” option on NTFS partition, not much going right

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 06:04 PM PDT

Cloned a Boot Camp partition from my old Mac with dd (both thus being NTFS), but, unlike the original, it does not show in the boot menu. Research suggests this is because ownership is disabled.

Thus I want to disable the "ignore ownership" option. Research finds two different ways: a checkbox in the "Get Info" section of the drive, which I don't have, and Terminal. The latter can achieve it either through "sudo vsdbutil -a [partition]" or through "sudo diskutil enableOwnership [partition]". Except the first one finds "No such file or directory" whenever pointed to it, and the latter responds with "Error enountered enabling user/group ownership: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-69860)".

So, what am I to do? Thanks to anyone who'll help me out.

How can I stop iOS from substituting emoji icons for some Unicode characters? [duplicate]

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:38 PM PDT

On iOS I'm getting bizarre (and mostly goofy) icon glyphs substituted for the glyphs that I expect — and see as expected on macOS — for many fonts.

For example, if I enter a "Black Right-Pointing Triangle" in various fonts on macOS (here Open Sans, Avenir, and Book Antiqua) I get, as expected

but on iOS I get

I understand that glyphs, especially emoji, can change depending on many things (platform, font, OS, etc.) but the substitution of crazy icons for standard characters in common fonts shared between macOS and iOS clearly wrong. For example, it ruins the UI of apps that rely on the correct glyphs, as in Ncalc for example:

Why does iOS substitute goofy icons for some Unicode characters? Is there a setting somewhere on iOS that I need to change?

Renaming files sequentially from folder name with Automator

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 11:03 AM PDT

Asked previously about renaming files in a folder (Rename File(s) from Foldername using automator/AppleScript), and now I have a folder flow that almost works.

I have created a folder in my Downloads called DOIT (As per attachments and workflow screenshots). I drop a folder in there called "Race Track 2019" which has a few random filenames in.

What I want is to rename the files sequentially from the folder name. I have the folder name variable working (as per screenshots) but it won't rename the files.

I was after (in this example) to be left with 2 files called "Race Track 2019-1 and Race Track 2019-2"

Is it a battery problem or SMC problem?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:27 PM PDT

I have a mid-2015 MacBook Pro running High Sierra. Except when I'm traveling, I always use it in clamshell mode and connected to power. I rarely put it to sleep (I have Energy Saver set to just put the display to sleep).

On July 21 I noticed that the light on the power connector had gone to amber, but Energy Saver said that the battery was fully charged. However, coconutBattery said the battery was at 95%.

Today I noticed that the lightning bolt was no longer showing on the battery status in the menu bar, and when I click on it it says "Battery is not charging". Energy Saver says that the battery is at 97%, but coconutBattery says 81%. Here's its full report:

Current Charge 6347 mAh
Full Charge Capacity 7092 mAh
89.5%
Design Capacity 8755 mAh
81%
Manufacture date 2018-03-07
Cycle Count 31
MacOS battery status Good
Battery temperature 37.0°C
Charging with 0 Watts
Power adapter Connected

Does this look like a problem with the battery, power adapter, or SMC?

UPDATE:

I reset the SMC, and at first it seemed like the problem was solved. The battery item in the menu bar said it was charging, and eventually said it was fully charged, and the power adapter changed to green. At that time coconutBattery said:

Current Charge 7030 mAh
Full Charge Capacity 7030 mAh
100%
Design Capacity 8755 mAh
80.3%

But while I was posting an answer to the question, it changed to:

Current Charge 6766 mAh
Full Charge Capacity 7030 mAh
96.3%
Design Capacity 8755 mAh
80.3%

The adapter light is still green.

How can I delete the partition table on a USB flash drive?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:59 PM PDT

I have a 32Gb USB flash drive, and I flashed it with a bootable image. So, that process modified the partition table, and the drive now reports a size of 1Gb. Unfortunately, erasing or reformatting the drive doesn't fix it. From what I've read, I need to completely nuke the partition table. Usually, this would be very easy to do on a Linux machine, but I must do it on a Mac right now. The Disk Utility app doesn't seem to have an UI for this. Is there another tool or set of commands I could use?

Logitech MX Master 2s Stops working

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:31 PM PDT

I have a MX Master 2S paired to a Macbook Air 8/8 16gb 512SSD on 11.4

I came from windows for the past 20 years. This is my first mac. I used the logi options software to change the scroll pattern and configure the buttons. It works as intended until it stops working. The only thing that fixes it for me is restarting the macbook. It's very annoying have to restart sometimes two times a day, especially in the middle of a busy work day.

Sometimes the scroll wheel stops working totally. I try killing the logi daemon process but that doesn't solve anything. I never had any issue with this mouse connected to my Surface devices.

I'm ready to pull my hair out and open to solutions.

(I've tired deleting logi options and installing it again)

How do I abort "add a call" on iOS 13?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:07 AM PDT

The scenario is I'm in the middle of a phone call, apparently my face brushed the button for "add a call". I'm still in my call, looking at that "Add a call / Contacts" menu.

I need to get back to the menus that let me switch between keypad and speakerphone controls. There is no exit/X/back out button on this screen. The only screen features are "Groups" and "+" (to add a contact) then it's a list of my contacts. Dragging down from the top does nothing. Going home and selecting phone app again simply brings me back here.

If I navigate the buttons on the bottom, I can get to a "Keypad", but this keypad does not have the button to let me switch to the menu with "speakerphone on/off". Further, typing in this keypad Does NOT generate DTMF touch-tones to the recipient, and so it cannot control navigational menus.

How do I abort an "Add a call"?

How can I kill and/or restart all wifi processes?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:06 PM PDT

My MacBook (Big Sur) has a problem about once a week when it stops being able to access the internet. Why do I think this is a problem with the Wifi processes? When I go up to the Wifi symbol in the top bar (the one that shows the signal strength), if I try to turn off the Wifi with the slider it just ignores it and keeps showing full signal strength (not greying them out). Trying to select another Wifi router just ends up with it spinning, more fiddling eventually makes the machine hang. The only solution I've found is restarting the laptop, but that takes forever as every app running refuses to restart until it's been able to talk to the network (that isn't there). Eventually it says my computer restarted because of a problem. It's not the router as other laptops are fine, they keep running, it's just this one.

So I'm hoping to find a way to avoid a full restart - is there a way to kill the processes that handle the Wifi?

p.s. someone already asked this question, but no-one answered it exactly, they gave an answer on how to type something in the terminal to turn the wifi off and then on again. I've tried that, the command doesn't complete - the command just hangs forever, and even control-C doesn't bring it back.

"Disk you attached not readable" - PMBR/MBR corrupted?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 04:01 PM PDT

Background:

Purchased 2 12TB WD Gold drives about 2 years ago and have been using them in an external enclosure without problem.

After upgrading my Mac mini server to 11.4, the message "The disk you attached is not readable" was displayed for this one drive post-boot. All other attached drives are fine, including it's twin 12TB drive. The message follows the bad drive to other Macs.

Both 12TB drives are encrypted and APFS. They're simply used for storage, so they've never been partitioned or set up for booting.

Since I have a twin drive (note: not a RAID pair, just an identical physical drive), I've compared them side by side, and the main issue that I've found so far is that it appears that the PMBR in sector 0 has been corrupted somehow.

Here's output from gpt for the bad drive:

New-iMac:~ user$ sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk2 Password: gpt show: /dev/disk2: mediasize=12000138625024; sectorsize=512; blocks=23437770752 gpt show: /dev/disk2: MBR not found at sector 0 gpt show: /dev/disk2: Pri GPT at sector 1 gpt show: /dev/disk2: Sec GPT at sector 23437770751 start size index contents 0 1 1 1 Pri GPT header 2 32 Pri GPT table 34 6 40 409600 1 GPT part - C12A7328-F81F-11D2-BA4B-00A0C93EC93B 409640 23437098928 2 GPT part - 7C3457EF-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC 23437508568 262151 23437770719 32 Sec GPT table 23437770751 1 Sec GPT header

The good, twin drive:

iMac:~ user$ sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk5 Password: gpt show: /dev/disk5: mediasize=12000138625024; sectorsize=512; blocks=23437770752 gpt show: /dev/disk5: PMBR at sector 0 gpt show: /dev/disk5: Pri GPT at sector 1 gpt show: /dev/disk5: Sec GPT at sector 23437770751 start size index contents 0 1 PMBR 1 1 Pri GPT header 2 32 Pri GPT table 34 6 40 409600 1 GPT part - C12A7328-F81F-11D2-BA4B-00A0C93EC93B 409640 23437098928 2 GPT part - 7C3457EF-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC 23437508568 262151 23437770719 32 Sec GPT table 23437770751 1 Sec GPT header

When I look at sector 0 on the good drive, I see what appear to be good/reasonable values when using iBored (old time Mac disk too which can read disk sectors, and show values for MBR partition table).

iBored MBR output - good disk

When I look at sector 0 on the bad drive, it (sector 0 only) is zeroed out completely.

All of the remaining sectors appear to be present (some other corruption notwithstanding). That is, data exists where I would expect it to exist and zeros exist where I expect zeros to exist. You can see that besides sector 0, gpt generates the exact same output that the good disk does.

My intuition - which I freely admit could be completely wrong - is that I may be able to edit sector 0 on the bad drive to match the values found on the good drive and then be able to at least try to mount the drive at that point.

However, I haven't done anything yet other than looking. TIA for any help!

Unable to delete Dropbox folder from my local hard disk

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:08 PM PDT

I have installed Dropbox app on Mac. This created a folder named "Dropbox" in my home folder.

I copied a large folder into this Dropbox folder.

The syncing of this folder is taking a lot of time so I have unlinked the Dropbox folder from Dropbox app (Dropbox app preferences -> Account -> Unlink the dropbox). Now when I try to delete this "Dropbox" folder I get the below error:

The operation can't be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure "Locked" is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again.

I have seen the 'Get Info' and see that the folder has 'locked' checkbox not ticked and also in users I see that I have read&write access

I also restarted my Mac but I still get the same error

How do I delete this folder(including all its sub-folders). How can I force delete this folder?

I am able to move the folder to Bin but I cannot delete the folder from Bin. I was doing 'Delete immediately' option and the folder is not getting deleted. How do I get the free space on my hard drive back?

Time Machine in the "Cleaning Up..." state forever

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:41 PM PDT

My Time Machine is in the cleanup state for a long time (several days). The backup is to an external drive and the disk on the mac laptop is less than 500 GB. It usaually takes much less time to clean up.

Is there a way to inspect what the Time Machine actually is doing during the cleanup?

The following log is not helpful.

What's the best way to update Homebrew when upgrading macOS?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:16 PM PDT

I'm just about to finally update my MacBook Pro to macOS Mojave, hoping that the issues have all been resolved. But when I got this new machine I changed from using MacPorts to using Homebrew.

When I used MacPorts, I had a (semi-successful) recipe for handling an OS upgrade: save a list of the ports, remove the MacPorts installation, install the new OS, install the new developer tools, install MacPorts, and then slog through the saved port list and update (since inevitably the set of ports would have changed).

What's the corresponding recipe for Homebrew? I have searched for "brew update Mojave" and found nothing.

How to get calendar invites to come in as iCal when i use a gmail address as my appleID?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 11:06 AM PDT

I use myname@gmail.com for my appleid username. If i wish to send an invite to my icloud calendar, how can i do so? I have myname@icloud.com and myname@me.com email addresses that are associated with my appleID (contactable at). I have tried sending the invite to these addresses but nothing has been received. Any ideas how i can send an invite to my icloud calendar?

Note this is a different question to "How to get calendar invites to come in as iCal and not as Google Calendar invites?" That asks how to get invites sent to a gmail address show up in ical without adding a gmail calendar. I am happy to send the invite to a non-gmail address.

My Desktop folder is missing from favorites menu and also from Finder Preferences. How do I restore to the favorites menu?

How to quickly move mouse cursor between monitors?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:03 PM PDT

I have two external monitors, positioned horizontally on each side of my MacBook Pro. When I am working in the far left or far right screens, I find it a little annoying to have to move the cursor all the way across to get to the opposite side (usually requires multiple swipes on the touchpad).

Is there some easier way to do this? I already have BetterTouchTool installed but did not see anything in there that would do this. I was thinking of some kind of key combo shortcut I could use that would jump the cursor to the next screen.

How do I enable extended mode with dual monitors in OS X 10.11.6?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:00 PM PDT

Equipment: Early 2015 MacBook Pro - Retina 13" with the Intel Iris 6100 graphics. Two Dell U2414H monitors. One MiniDP to DP cable connecting MBP to monitor #1. DP to DP cable connecting monitor #1 to monitor #2. OS X 10.11.6.

History: According to the specs for the Early 2015 13" MBPr the laptop is capable of supporting "Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on up to two external displays, both at millions of colors."

According to Apple Support article HT206587 the video card does "support multi-stream transport (MST) displays at 60 Hz".

According to http://www.displayport.org/cables/driving-multiple-displays-from-a-single-displayport-output/ support of MST 1.2 means the laptop should provide "the ability to stream independent video displays from a single desktop or notebook video output".

Lastly, according to https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-processor-graphics the video card is in fact capable of supporting DisplayPort 1.2.

Problem: When I connect both monitors to the MBPr and "Enable 1.2" on monitor #1, the screen from #1 is mirrored on monitor #2. After doing some research, it appears that I need to change a setting to switch from mirrored mode to extended mode in order to have two different screens. I did Enable 1.2 on monitor #2 as a test but there was no change.

Support: I called Apple and was told to call Dell. I called Dell and the tech informed me that it was definitely a problem with the source and explained how on a Dell PC you could switch between mirror and extended modes within the graphics settings. I again called Apple and spoke with a senior advisor. I was first told that it could only be done using Thunderbolt cables. I directed his attention to the support article and said the listed Dell monitors did not have Thunderbolt. I was then told my video card didn't support that feature but explained that he was referencing the AMD Radeon R9 M370X card which is not my card. He said he would escalate the issue.

Question: How do I enable extended mode?

How do I set environment variables on OS X?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:19 PM PDT

I have always difficulties setting the Environment variables in OS X like JAVA_HOME, M2_HOME or PATH. How to set these on OS X Mavericks?

I did some research but the answers I've found didn't really help me yet:

  1. export JAVA_HOME=/... (But it seems that the changes are temporary, just for one terminal session.)
  2. setenv JAVA_HOME=/... (But command not found.)
  3. Open .profile and write the variables inside to make the changes permanent- (.profile does not exist).
  4. Open .bash_profile and write the variables inside to make the changes permanent- (.bash_profile does not exist).
  5. vi ~/.bash_profile (Quite a challenge for somebody who doesn't know vi.)
  6. Creating your own enrivonment.plist file.

Can somebody please walk me through the steps to get that to work on OS X Mavericks, assuming no Unix knowhow?

Why is java always running?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:47 PM PDT

I have a MacBook Air running 10.8.3. I have Java running almost all the time and it is consuming ~500 MB of RAM. I didn't start Java, and—as far as I can tell—nothing that uses Java is still running. Surely something in the background is using Java, but I don't know what. I would like to kill it (if I can) because I'd like to have my RAM back.

I noticed this happening a few months ago, but never could figure out how to solve the problem. I can kill Java itself, but it restarts immediately and eventually consumes too much RAM.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Case-insensitive ls sorting in Mac OSX

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:16 PM PDT

How can I make the ls command in Max OS X Lion sort files and directories similar to how Ubuntu Linux does (case-insensitive, directories NOT on top, dot files NOT on top)? Ideally I'd like to do this without piping output to another command such as sort.

For example, I want to see:

foo Foobar MyStuff/ .stuff/ test.txt

instead of:

.stuff Foobar MyStuff/ foo test.txt

In Linux, ls sort order is controlled by the system's locale, specifically LC_COLLATE. When LC_COLLATE=en_US.UTF-8, ls will sort items like I want. When LC_COLLATE=C, ls will sort similar to OS X.

LC_COLLATE is set to en_US.UTF-8 in OS X, but ls still sorts the old POSIX way. Does anyone know how I can make this behave more like Linux?
