Preventing macOS Big Sur from automatically swtiching to Bluetooth audio device output

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:07 AM PDT

I have a bluetooth headset that I use for an Android phone and a MacBook. It has the feature of being able to connect to both at the same time, and switch to whichever one is actively playing. There is no mixing, the audio is just "stolen".

However, when some audio applications idle, they will "steal" the audio. So, if I'm using my phone, and the MacBook will come into range while Spotify is open (but not playing) it will pause playback on the phone and switch to the MacBook. This is because once the headset is in range, macOS automatically connects to it and then switches the default audio device to it.

So far in Big Sur I've not found an option to disable it. This question has a solution that works for previous versions but not Big Sur.

It will even switch audio devices if I have wired headphones connected!

Is there some workaround I can use for Big Sur?

Enable file sharing for Everyone

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:07 AM PDT

I have a folder on my iMac "Movies" and have enabled file sharing for Everyone.

If I connect from my iPad in Files and login it works.

I want to allow other family members to connect as Guest, but when I try this I get an error message "You entered an invalid username or password for server".

I tried from my wife's iPad (she has a login on my iMac), but she could not see the Movies Folder.

I tried connecting from her iPad using my login, but this gave access to everything (including my time machine drives). There is nothing I wist to hide, but wish to avoid accidental damage.

My Question is how to access my shared Movies folder to guests (or other registered users)?

As a secondary question If I login as myself, I can see the root drive, mounted volumes (including Time Machine). This is undesirable, but I can not see how this is enabled.

Non-sudo alternatives to get the current time zone?

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 10:05 PM PDT

sudo systemsetup -gettimezone will return the current system set time zone to the command line but it requires sudo.

date "+%z" will return the offset (e.g. +0900) and date "+%Z" will return the time zone short code (e.g. JST).

Is there another way, either command, executable or API? My searches have turned up nothing. I'm writing a CLI terminal program (not Objective-C/Swift) within which it would be helpful to have access to whatever the system currently is set to.

Any help or insight will be much appreciated.

Is there a way to save or export Screentime data?

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 07:34 PM PDT

Screentime on Mac and iOS records data every day but it only keeps the data for a few weeks. Obviously the data must be stored somewhere, is there a way to access it?

Seeking old version of Preview

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 06:40 PM PDT

The latest version of Preview (and perhaps it's been true for a while) stops respecting the preference to open a new window for each image after 15 images are open. I have to manually go through all the rest that have been opened in a single window, right-click on them to select the 'view in own window' menu item. What a pain. I see no way to change this. I'm thinking if I got a previous version of Preview, it might work as before, but the farthest back I go in my backups is to last January. That version behaves the same. (My application backup drive went south then). Any thoughts on how I might proceed? AFAICT I need version 9 of Preview.

What is ~/Library/ContainerManager/PendingUpdates for? (Big Sur)

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 06:32 PM PDT

I have a folder on my M1 Mac Mini at ~/Library/ContainerManager/PendingUpdates. The folder is (was) full of .plist files with recent modification dates. The plists were named with the bundle IDs of recent apps that I'd recently used on the machine, followed by a hyphen and a number, another hyphen and my userID e.g. com.foo.bar-2-501.plist

I cannot find any info, documentation, etc about this folder or where these "pending" files are destined for (iCloud?)

Upon reboot, the folder usually clears itself.

Can anyone help demystify this?

Is MacBook able to turn on the isight camera even the green light indicator is burned or damaged?

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 02:08 PM PDT

I am referring to the URL below stated that no software able to bypass or turn off the light not even the macos firmwares.

Does a modern MacBook's green "camera light" always turn on when the camera is activated?

I wonder what if my Mac book Pro green light indicator is damaged or burned, will the iSight camera still able to be activated?

Refuse Calls - missing button

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:10 AM PDT

I have an iPhone5S running iOS 12.5.4.

Recently I have been getting annoying calls from my "ISP" threatening cut off my internet. I would block these, but they use a different number each time (often not even a valid number).

I would like to be able to refuse calls from suspicious looking unknown callers until they give up, but only have a "Slide to Answer" button. An Apple help site suggested double tap to cancel, but this doesn't work.

Thanks to those who answered. Unfortunately I have been unable to test, as the nuisance caller has stopped. (I mainly use the iPhone for outgoing calls, and only get calls from family or a few trusted contacts.)

Can't find AutoUnattend.xml?

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 10:02 PM PDT

I have followed this link https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/316512/408833 in order to download Windows, and I have reached the part where I need to edit the AutoUnattend file, however I can't seem to find it on my USB. I've tried redownloading the support software and the iso file but still nothing (also tried the terminal command, says the file doesn't exist). Any help?

Error: -69519 when resizing partition of apfs container scheme

"No device connected" for Wacom One tablet

Update I rebooted with the Wacom One connected but still get the "No Device Connected" fro the Desktop Center.

iPhone 7 running iOS 14.3 can't make WhatsApp calls over WiFi

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 11:34 AM PDT

My iPhone 7 (iOS 14.3) will no longer make calls - audio nor video - over WiFi. I have tried re-installing WhatsApp and although it then asks me to grant permission to the microphone / camera / etc, it does not ask me for permission to use the Local Network.

I have checked Settings->Privacy->Local Network and WhatsApp does not appear in the list. Similarly if i look in Settings->WhatsApp, there is no setting for Local Network at all.

I have tried Reset the network settings, Reset all settings, and also just went through the Erase all content and settings. Following this I set the phone up again from scratch, downloaded WhatsApp and the situation is exactly the same.

Any ideas why WhatsApp wont use the Local Network? Other mobile devices on the same WiFi network work fine.

UPDATE

I have connected the iPhone to my Mac and been running Console.app as I tried to make a WhatsApp voice call. The following error is generated but I cannot find any information about this process: enter image description here

Confirmed that this error does not occur when my other iPhone (a 5S, connected to the same WiFi network) makes a WhatsApp voice call.

How can I troubleshot bluetooth occasionally restarting on MacBooks?

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 07:24 PM PDT

During the last 4 years I've had 3 different MacBooks (one personal, two from different jobs) that had the same issue: bluetooth randomly dropped all connections. I typically have a bluetooth keyboard, mouse and headphones connected but headphones are typically optional.

If it happened with one machine, I would blame myself for messing something up or maybe faulty hardware in that particular unit. However, this is my third macbook that's suffering from the exact same issue. Bluetooth either comes back after a few minutes or I restart the thing manually. It's a bit annoying during conference calls.

Is this by any means a known issue and something I could do anything about?

How to delete old and stuck local time machine snapshot from one year ago

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 03:08 PM PDT

I have an old and stuck local time machine snapshot or directory (probably from Mac OS 10.14/Mojave/2018) that seems impossible to delete (now on Mac OS 10.15/Catalina/2019).

The directory is empty (0 kB) and located here:

/com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/Jons Mac/2019-09-19-223308

But it does not show up if I run:

% tmutil listlocalsnapshots / Snapshots for volume group containing disk /: com.apple.TimeMachine.2020-08-03-161551.local com.apple.TimeMachine.2020-08-03-162946.local

If I try to delete the directory, I get a error message that the directory is a read only file system:

% rm -rf /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/Jons\ Mac/2019-09-19-223308 rm: /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/Jons Mac/2019-09-19-223308/Macintosh HD: Read-only file system rm: /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/Jons Mac/2019-09-19-223308: Read-only file system

Same happens if I try to delete the old local snapshot root directory.

% rm -rf /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots rm: /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/Jons Mac/2019-09-19-223308/Macintosh HD: Read-only file system rm: /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/Jons Mac/2019-09-19-223308: Read-only file system rm: /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/Jons Mac: Read-only file system rm: /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb: Read-only file system rm: /com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots: Read-only file system

This also happens if I disable SIP.

Does someone have an idea how I get can rid of this directory?

When printing photos to the Canon TS960 printer from iPhone/iPad using AirPrint, the printer thinks the print job is a CD label

When printing *photos to the Canon TS960 printer from iPhone or iPad using AirPrint, the printer thinks the print job is a CD label and asks me to 'Place a printable disk on the multi-purpose tray'. How can I fix this?

*Printing anything but photos works normally. Also, the issue is specific to iOS devices and doesn't happen when printing photos from my MacBook.

Activity Monitor No Longer displays columns

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 12:22 PM PDT

I have a Mac Mini (late 2012) running Catalina (10.15.3). I can't remember when I first noticed it, but for a while now, I cannot sort Activity Monitor's columns. This is essentially what it looks like:

I've tried to find some way if I can perhaps reset its preferences, but google is not my friend.

Extreme slowing down of MacBook Pro due to pkd process

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 06:06 PM PDT

I am debugging this issue for several days now, but just realized that a certain pkd process is responsible for extremely slowing down my MacBook Pro. When I kill this process, everything works fine. While the process is running, I cannot work with the MacBook. I cannot startup Finder, I cannot typ anything, etc. I can barely manage to open the Activity Manager and kill siad pkd process.

Here is a picture of which files this process is using:

enter image description here

Does anyone know where this is coming from? Why does it block the laptop entirely? How can I solve this issue?

The laptop is a MacBook Pro Mid-2012 (serial number is C1MK9X6ZDTY3; it is a MacBook Pro 13-Inch "Core i5" 2.5 Mid-2012). The operating system was recently updated to Catalina 10.15.4. Thanks for your help.

2nd monitor is mirroring the first external monitor

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 02:49 PM PDT

For years I've been using a Dell U2515H monitor as external display for my Macbook Pro. Yesterday I purchased a second monitor (exactly the same) and connected it through HDMI to my Macbook Pro (2018) using a docking station. The first monitor is connected over DP.

The screen is working, but my Macbook doesnt recognize it as a second monitor, it just sees the Macbook and one external screen (Dell U2515H) in Display settings.

I have tried to hold down the option key to use the 'Detect displays' function, but that doesnt do anything.

I have no other screen around to test on to see if this is an issue because the two external monitors are exactly the same model.

`brew cleanup` doesn't scrub the Caskroom

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 11:18 AM PDT

Apparently brew cleanup also cleans the cask cache. But my problem was that many casks leave their installers in /usr/local/Caskroom, which is not considered part of the cache, and thus taking up a lot of space, while in fact the installer might not be needed after the installation.

Now brew cask cleanup is merged with brew cleanup.

However, I haven't found a way to purge my Caskroom folder using brew cleanup.

The man page says:

cleanup [options] [formula|cask] Remove stale lock files and outdated downloads for formulae and casks, and remove old versions of installed formulae. If arguments are specified, only do this for the specified formulae and casks. --prune Remove all cache files older than specified days. -n, --dry-run Show what would be removed, but do not actually remove anything. -s Scrub the cache, including downloads for even the latest versions. Note downloads for any installed formula or cask will still not be deleted. If you want to delete those too: rm -rf "$(brew --cache)" --prune-prefix Only prune the symlinks and directories from the prefix and remove no other files.

I want to delete the installers for the currently installed packages as well. For example, the mactex installer takes up almost 4 GB of space.

Apparently, the command for non-cask installs is rm -rf $(brew --cache), but what is the equivalent for casks?

How to change language of an existing Pages for iCloud document?

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 01:06 PM PDT

I have document that was created in Pages for Mac with the correct spelling/language (not English) settings for each paragraph. However, when I now try to edit this document using Pages for iCloud the spelling is set to English.

I have read several support documents about this

Pages for iCloud: Work in other languages

Pages for iCloud: Search, replace, and spell-check text

iCloud: Change the language or time zone on iCloud.com

as well as some "third party" suggestions, all to no avail.

I have made sure that the correct language is my primary language in my browser (Chrome), in my OS (Win 10), changed the language of the iCloud UI (through Settings), changed the format used by iCloud (also via Settings) but my document is still spelled in English.

I believe the first link above explains how one create a completely new document in a certain language but my document already exists.

How do I change the language used for spell-check on an existing document?

Macbook does not wake up properly after several hours of sleep

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 10:08 PM PDT

When I close my MacBook Pro in the evening, and then open it in the morning, the display is illuminated and the apple is bright but nothing is happening. So I need to push the power button to restart it. When it restarts, Google Chrome crashes and virtualenv is logged out.

I thought that the problem is with hibernation so I set the hibernation to 0 in pmset. My current pmset parameters are as follows:

How to access Greek symbols on macOS from a basic keyboard without copy/paste?

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 03:36 PM PDT

I write mathematical computer code.

I frequently need Greek letters such as ø

My current workflow is terrible: hold down OPT and run my finger across the three rows of the keyboard:

œ∑´®†¥¨^øπ"'« åß∂ƒ©˙∆˚¬…æ Ω≈ç√∫~µ≤≥÷

... And see if I can find what I'm hunting for.

Failing that, typing 'alpha Unicode' into Google hope for some symbol I can copy and paste.

I discovered that in system settings -> keyboard -> keyboard, I can "show keyboard and character viewers in menubar".

The character viewer looks like it will come to the rescue, but ... no Greek symbols! ARGH!

What can I do?

Smarter Bash Tab Completion

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT

As a recent switcher from Ubuntu (Well recent switch backer if that's a word) I'm finding myself in the command line a lot more than when I was a mac user before. One thing I really loved about Ubuntu was when I was compiling and running java programs for class my tab completion was really smart. When I needed to compile my class if I had a directory that looked like:

Example.java Example.class Client.java Client.class

and I needed to compile the Client.java to take into account the most recent changes I would type:

javac C [TAB]

and it would complete to

javac Client.java

ignoring the .class files because you can't run javac on a .class. Also when I wanted to run the file typing

java C [TAB]

would result in

java Client

with no period. This was a very smart way of doing the tab completion that I got so used to that now it's driving me crazy when I hit tab and it gives me the Client. without actually completing to what I need it to be.

So is there any way to make the Mac bash completion smarter so that it would have this same effect?

What's a recommended setup of accounts on Mac OS X?

In Lion - on a one person per install setup - the user is admin by default.

Would you recommended this setup?

I thought that the default user should never be admin but have a restricted standard account instead.

If I change my account for the everyday use to standard and keep an extra admin account for maintenaince, what restrictions take place?

e.g. Can I still install software as easily?

What are pros and cons for MacPorts, Fink and Homebrew?

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT

I'm just migrating from Ubuntu Linux to Mac, and everything is new and I'm re-learning a lot of stuff.

On Linux I had the excellent apt-get to manage software packages. I googled for an alternative on Mac and found about MacPorts, Fink and Homebrew.

I will use this computer primarily to develop Ruby on Rails applications.

So, what are the differences between them? Which are the upsides and downsides? Which one is best maintained and has more packages?
