What is the probability of getting an 8 in Minesweeper?

Posted: 17 Aug 2021 06:51 PM PDT

After spending more time than I care to admit trying to answer this question, I found myself wondering if Minesweeper had ever produced an 8. I thought to myself that it's technically possible, but would the game's code actually allow it to happen? Well, as it turns out, yes, it can happen (according to this Reddit post):

Screenshot of a Minesweeper board with a square surrounded by 8 mines.

This got me thinking even further, while it's possible, how likely is it to occur? After some searching, I came across another Reddit post, where a comment claimed that the probability was in the realm of 0.011320847% for an expert board. Why limit this question to the expert difficulty though? I continued my investigation, but I haven't had any luck finding probabilities for the other difficulty levels.

What is the probability that a single square will be surrounded by 8 mines in Minesweeper, for each level of difficulty?

I gave up this minesweeper board, is there a correct move that makes this solveable with certainty?

Posted: 17 Aug 2021 04:09 PM PDT

I have stared at this board for way too long and can't figure out how to move on.

As far as I can tell the main problem is the bottom part with the double stacked '4'. It seems to me that I have multiple possible solutions there that would all work out, so I can't decide for certainty which one is the correct one.

Can you share save files on Steam Family Share to other accounts?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:15 AM PDT

I've been playing on my brother's Steam account for a long time and it's about time I should get my own Steam account now, but looking up the Family Share it keeps saying that everyone will have their own save files. So is it possible that I can have my old save files from my brother's account to my new one? Or do I have to restart all of my games from the beginning?

Are low profile GPUs better than laptop GPUs or are they same thing?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:27 AM PDT

I'm overwhelmed by the different types of GPUs. Recently I came to know that laptops have different GPUs that have lower power consumption and are smaller in size.

But no matter how much I tried to find, I couldn't find a photo of any GTX 1050 or 1080 or RTX GPU for laptop. All I could find photos were like this:

enter image description here enter image description here

I'm not really sure what kind of GPUs are used in laptops. Especially in terms of how they look and what weight and size they have.

Then I came to know about some low profile GPUs. They use less power. A quick Google search for low profile GPU shows something like this:

enter image description here

Now I'm wondering if low profile GPUs are actually the GPUs used in laptops - I'm not really sure. Because I can't find any reference about this. Which lead me to ask this question.

But I can't find a photo or article about the (mainly physical) differences between desktop GPUs and laptop GPUs (and differences between laptop GPUs and low profile GPUs in case they are also different things).

I've researched and found that desktop GPUs in most cases perform better in gaming than laptop GPUs in the same series, given similar specifications. For example, an i5 (8th generation) desktop with a 1650 GPU gives better FPS in most games than an i5 laptop with a 1650 GPU.

So, are there any differences between low profile GPUs and laptop GPUs? If yes, for the same GPU (e.g. GTX 1080 or 1050 or 1660) series, which one is supposed to give better performance?

What do the badges mean during loading / picking a pokemon in Pokemon Unite?

Posted: 17 Aug 2021 11:45 PM PDT

I have no screenshot at the moment, nor could I find it online. However, if you played the game, you might have seen it yourself. Its location is more at the top border of the "card".

I do not mean the badges after the game btw, but before.

How is XP shared between multiple teammates attacking the same wild Pokemon?

Alt title: Does Pokemon Unite have a Last Hit mechanic?

When me and my teammate head up the lane and start farming xp, how is xp shared between us? Is it based on our overall contribution to the kill, or is it based on who gets the last hit, like in some other mobas?

How do I determine whether my pokemon scales with physical or special damage?

How do I determine whether my pokemon scales with physical or special damage?

It seems like neither type, range/melee, roles, nor colour on moves indicates the scaling of each pokemon's attack.

I have done some testing individually, but I see no pattern nor information that the game provides in an accessible spot - am I missing something?

Name for games that have abusive in app purchases

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 05:21 AM PDT

I am looking for a new game and finding searching hard.

The problem is that most games have in app purchases these days. So I eliminate a lot of quality games by trying to filter those out.

But at the same time, some games are abusive with it. Frequently requiring an in app purchase every few levels or to replace hours and hours of pointless grinding.

I want to filter out the second kind, but not all of them. I have found that "pay to win" comes close, but it is not the same. I have played many great games that allow paying to win, but did not require it.

Is there a common term (that I can use for searching) that means games with in app purchases where you HAVE to pay or you CAN'T win?

My friends can't connect to my Minecraft Hamachi server

Posted: 17 Aug 2021 06:54 PM PDT

My internet provider doesn't lets me to open ports unless I buy a static IP. So I researched a bit and learned that I can use Hamachi to open a server to play with my friends without opening ports. I downloaded and sucsessfully set up minecraft server files. When I double click the server.jar file, a GUI pops up and starts the server. Later I installed Hamachi and created a new network. According to the tutorial video, I copied the Hamachi's ipv4 adress and pasted inside server.properties file. But now when I double click the server.jar file, a GUI pops up and instantly closes.

To see the error message, I runned the server.jar file from command prompt and saw below output:

[18:25:44] [main/INFO]: Environment: authHost='https://authserver.mojang.com', accountsHost='https://api.mojang.com', sessionHost='https://sessionserver.mojang.com', servicesHost='https://api.minecraftservices.com', name='PROD' [18:25:44] [main/WARN]: Ambiguity between arguments [teleport, location] and [teleport, destination] with inputs: [0.1 -0.5 .9, 0 0 0] [18:25:44] [main/WARN]: Ambiguity between arguments [teleport, location] and [teleport, targets] with inputs: [0.1 -0.5 .9, 0 0 0] [18:25:44] [main/WARN]: Ambiguity between arguments [teleport, destination] and [teleport, targets] with inputs: [Player, 0123, @e, dd12be42-52a9-4a91-a8a1-11c01849e498] [18:25:44] [main/WARN]: Ambiguity between arguments [teleport, targets] and [teleport, destination] with inputs: [Player, 0123, dd12be42-52a9-4a91-a8a1-11c01849e498] [18:25:44] [main/WARN]: Ambiguity between arguments [teleport, targets, location] and [teleport, targets, destination] with inputs: [0.1 -0.5 .9, 0 0 0] [18:25:44] [main/INFO]: Reloading ResourceManager: Default [18:25:44] [Worker-Main-13/INFO]: Loaded 7 recipes [18:25:45] [Worker-Main-13/INFO]: Loaded 1137 advancements [18:25:46] [Server thread/INFO]: Starting minecraft server version 1.17.1 [18:25:46] [Server thread/INFO]: Loading properties [18:25:46] [Server thread/INFO]: Default game type: SURVIVAL [18:25:46] [Server thread/INFO]: Generating keypair [18:25:46] [Server thread/INFO]: Starting Minecraft server on 25.51.131.200:25565 [18:25:46] [Server thread/INFO]: Using default channel type [18:25:46] [Server thread/WARN]: **** FAILED TO BIND TO PORT! When I remove the IP adress from server.properties file and run the server.jar file, as I said a GUI pops up and starts the server. As a result I can join to my server by typing localhost; but as it's local my friends who are from another country can't join to my server that way.

Here is a screenshot of my current Hamachi configuration:

enter image description here

And this is the diognastics tool result:

enter image description here

I've already tried allowing javac.exe, javaw.exe, hamachi's executable etc from firewall but this didn't changed anything.

By the way unlike other VPNs, Hamachi doesn't changes my ip at all. Even Hamachi was on and running, my ip was different from Hamachi copies to the clipboard. Is that normal?

How does the handling differ in PPT1 vs. PPT2?

Posted: 17 Aug 2021 12:20 PM PDT

I've seen a lot of Tetris players commenting on how Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 feels a bit slower compared to Puyo Puyo Tetris 1. Does anyone have exact frame counts and numbers for comparison?

(For context, I've heard speculation that the developers slightly increased the timing delays for Tetris to balance Puyo vs. Tetris play.)

I'm curious about specifics like ARE (spawn delay), lock delay, line clear delay, DAS (delayed auto shift), ARR (auto repeat rate), and SDF (soft drop factor).

I found the PPT1 timings on the Hard Drop wiki: https://harddrop.com/wiki/Puyo_Puyo_Tetris_timings

Does anyone know the timings for PPT2?

How do I stop community content in specific languages from appearing in the new Steam library?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 02:25 AM PDT

Is there a way to filter out content in specific languages?

Changing player heads size that are on the ground

Posted: 17 Aug 2021 05:01 PM PDT

What do we call the line of a character in a video game when he makes an attack?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 05:24 AM PDT

Here's the line is referred to as a sound effect, but it's too vague in my opinion, because it's something that's voiced by a character and not just a sound. Is there a more specific word in the context of video games?

How to maximize the distance recorded for Portmanteau unlocking

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 02:08 AM PDT

Compared to e.g. a fitness tracker running on the same phone, Wizards Unite only counts a fraction of the distance traveled towards unlocking Portmanteaus.

I'd like to collect best practices on how to maximize that distance.

  • Obviously, distances traveled too fast are not counted, but I'm unsure about the actual limit. You'll get the 'car warning' screen at approx. 25km/h, and I assume this limit means that no distance is recorded.
I have the suspicion that the 'car warning' screen also invalidates a certain distance, even if traveling slower again. I tried to completely stop for a few seconds after I received the warning and this seems to work for me, but I still might be mistaken.

  • The blue avatar also switches into 'broom-mode' when traveling fast. This sometimes happens without the 'car warning' screen, so this has either a different limit or some allowed maximum time. I don't know about its influence on recorded distance.

  • The GPS location often loses position for Wizards Unite. When re-locating the player, the missing distance is not counted. Going way slower and stopping once GPS is lost (avatar doesn't move) helps here.

Has anyone more observations here? Is there an additional factor? Are there technical means to improve GPS to at least the level of other apps on the phone?

Is there a term for accidentally saving a game when you're about to die?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 03:50 AM PDT

I'm sure everyone has at least once had the pleasure of saving their game only to discover upon resuming play that they were just about to die from an attack they hadn't seen. And then you load your save and discover that at the moment you saved, it was too late to avoid the attack: each time you load your game, you are immediately hit and killed. Even worse, this could equally well happen in a game with automatic checkpoints instead of manual save games. For example, just as you accidentally walk off a cliff to your doom, the game decides that now is a great time to auto-save.

So, is there a term for this situation? (Or perhaps a different term for when it happens via manual saves or autosaves?) I suppose this is a type of softlock, but I'm wondering if there's a more specific term.

Note that I'm specifically asking about saving one's game immediately before the player is about to die or otherwise lose the game. I'm not asking about the more general case where a player decision results in a hidden fail state that is not revealed until much later, as is common with many point-and-click adventure games (e.g. an item that can only be obtained at the start of the game is required at the end in order to win).

How can I find servers for Primal Carnage?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:13 AM PDT

I just bought Primal Carnage on the current Steam sale; the original version, not its sequel, Primal Carnage: Extinction.

It's a multi-player game. There's no single player mode; you need to join a server. But I can't find any.

Empty Primal Carnage server browser

The list is empty. Refreshing doesn't help, nor changing the settings.

I've searched with Google for where can I find primal carnage servers -extinction and variations thereof, and dug up some old threads on the Steam forums, including one with a proposed solution: verify the game cache, which I did, but to no avail.

What else can I do to find the servers?

Version is 1.3.0; build ID is 132188.

Addendum 2018-05-03

Well, it may be a bug. After installing it on a new machine, a list of servers showed up and I'm able to play. Upon reloading it is empty occasionally, though.

Creating a new Nintendo network ID on 3DS with games on it

Posted: 17 Aug 2021 01:07 PM PDT

So I got this used 3DS XL at a pawn shop that has a number of different games downloaded on it. They told me when I bought it that the games were tied to the system so not to try to reset it myself or I would lose all the games and the save data.

I recently went to the Nintendo eShop and wanted to download the Pokemon Sun and Moon Demo. When I went to do so it said I needed to link a Nintendo Network ID in order to use this software and prompted me to go to the NNID settings.

When I went to the System Settings and then to the NNID Settings, it said "Hi there, kids! Please have a parent or guardian look at this for you, OK?" then when I hit A (OK) the next screen said "Welcome! You can link a Nintendo Network ID to your system here." The next few screens have info about the NNID and then I reached a screen that had two options; one to link an existing ID and one to create a new ID.

I am assuming that this means that there is not a NNID linked on this 3DS. So what I was wondering is: first off if someone could help me confirm if my assumption is correct or not; and two, if I proceed and create a new NNID on this system, will I lose the games and save data I already have on it?

Is there a common name for pop-up damage numbers, such as in RPGs?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 03:48 AM PDT

It just occurred to me that I've never heard a name for the damage numbers that pop up over characters, typically in RPGs. After some searching I found one person call them "poppers", but no other names.

Is there a name, perhaps used inside the gaming industry, for these numbers?

Why are my Imperial assignment rewards not appearing?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 12:08 AM PDT

I have been having an issue with Imperial assignments:

  1. After finishing an Imperial assignment, the assignment is auto-replaced with a new one, but the reward doesn't appear?

  2. I have been stockpiling unneeded imperial resources ahead of time, but they seem to disappear from my inventory randomly?

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, do they know why this is happening, and/or how to fix it?

Is there a definition for the polygonal art design found in games?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 03:50 AM PDT

While every 3D game includes polygons, some games use polygonal art design. The overall shape of the characters and environments is often simplified with strong geometry.

Most colorful platform games of the 90's had a polygonal art / low poly approach mostly due to technical aspects.

Games such as Crash Bandicoot, Ape Escape and Grim Fandango come to mind.

I'm trying to find modern day games that use mainly polygonal art design.

I made a search on Google and couldn't find an exact definition or term for this.

Please enlighten me.

NOTE: The polygonal art I'm referring to is not the same as minimal or pixel art.

UPDATE, found this interested video on the subject.

Genre name for real-time, 2D games where you create soldiers that automatically advance to the enemy base?

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 03:42 AM PDT

I've recently noticed some games emerging in a certain style for which I know of no name. I'm curious if there's any name for this style of gameplay - such a name will allow me to more efficiently search for more information about this genre.

I'm guessing it's some subgenre of strategy gaming.

General Game Description

  • 2D gameplay with a side-scrolling perspective.
  • Real-time (or mostly real-time) action.
  • You have a base at one edge of the map and the enemy has one at the other edge.
  • The winner is the first player to destroy the opponent's base.
  • You can create new units at your base. You have no control of these units. They will automatically advance towards the opponent's base, attacking any of the opponent's units on the way.
  • If a unit reaches the enemy's base, it starts attacking it.
  • The game may include other aspects like resource management (units cost resources that you get somewhere), special abilities (e.g. spells on a timer) or other special mechanics, but the core of the gameplay is choosing the correct unit composition and timing and letting those units do the work for you.
