Cannot run Sublime Text using ./subl

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 03:11 AM PDT

I downloaded Sublime Text 4107 zip file. Unzipped it in a folder and tried running it using ./subl command but no matter what I try it shows `

"Sublime Text 15-33-10-536" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Bin.

I have read every article available but no luck. Can anyone help me. If anybody want more information tell me comment section. Also if I install Sublime using .dmg file and drag it into Applications folder it works fine.

How can you find out what caused a process to be killed?

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 12:17 AM PDT

There's a core process (coreaudiod), that's being killed repeatedly. How can I find what's killing it? (i.e. is it another process?, is it a bug?, is RAM or CPU full?)

How to mirror iPad display to PC to record

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:56 PM PDT

I need to put my iPad display onto my PC. By this I mean record or stream iPad footage on software such as OBS or Streamlabs. I have tried several methods such as LonelyScreen, Mirroring360, and even iTools. However none of these have worked so far. I am able to link the iPad to the PC via USB-C cable, so maybe that could be of use.

I am aware this question has been asked, but it has never been answered well. Also, Youtubers have been able to record iOS footage with OBS, I don't know how. Lastly, I have a piece of hardware that is supposed to record Nintendo switch footage through HDMI, and there are maybe other ports to use for iOS USB c type cable input to OBS. I say maybe because I lost the hardware somewhere in my house, so tell me if I should just go for a hunt to go find it.

Thank you for any help, and to stack exchange, I swear I think I followed the rules.

Can't set up Touch ID on iPhone 6+

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:36 AM PDT

I have an iPhone 6+ that was given to me by the original owner because she thought she had bricked it while attempting to set it up for a family member.

Using DFU mode I have un-bricked it, but one problem remains, I can't set up Touch ID. During initial setup, & every time I've gone to set Touch ID up in the Settings app, I see the setup screen for less than a second before it goes to a screen saying, "Failed Unable to to complete Touch ID setup. Please go back and try again." I've tried with a SIM installed & that makes no difference.

Touch ID set up failed

How can I fix my Mac volume glitching?

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:11 AM PDT

When I use my Mac, the volume glitches. Every few seconds, all the output devices disappear, even if it is only the 'Internal Speakers', and the volume mutes, then everything returns and the volume goes back to about 20%.

Here's what it looks like:

Volume Glitch

I've also reset SMC and PRAM/NVRAM.

I have Windows (Boot Camp) on an external USB drive. The issue doesn't happen there. But, I can't boot into Windows using the selector tool (hold alt on startup), so instead, I need to boot into recovery mode and then select it as the startup disk. Normal macOS doesn't recognise the Windows drive either. This may be related to the issue.

I'm pretty sure that the issue isn't caused by the third-parties I have. I've had them for a long time and they're all trusted apps. But I have uninstalled my most recent app, HP Smart. I used AppCleaner to uninstall it, then I manually went through and checked if anything was left.

Is there a solution? Thanks.

Restoring a Macbook Air [closed]

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 03:49 PM PDT

I tried to restore factory setting on a macbook air and did something wrong. Now I can't boot it up at all. When I tried to re-install MacOS, it said I can't do it. I have another macbook air. Is it possible to use the second one to boot up the first? Or is there another way?

How to immediately show the function keys on the 2020 MBP M1 Touch Bar?

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I am switching from a 2018 MBP i7 with a touch bar to a 2020 MBP M1. The older machine is still running macOS Catalina (v10.15.7) whereas the newer one came with macOS Big Sur preinstalled (v11.4). One thing I cannot figure out is how to force the M1 to show the function keys immediately upon pressing the 🌐 fn key. Check out the different Keyboard system preferences:

2018

2018 MBP on macOS v10.15.7

2020

2020 MBP on macOS v11.4

Video

Click here to see the difference in a video.

This delay is big enough for me to miss the 🌐 fncontrolF2 or 🌐 fncontrolF3 shortcuts that focus on the Menu Bar and Dock, respectively. While I realize that I have the option to show nothing but the function keys on the touch bar, I still find the touch bar useful enough to leave it as is. (I've set it up to change to function keys in certain apps like iTerm.)

Does anybody know of a script or a workaround how to bring back the macOS Catalina behavior?

Cannot install Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) on PowerPC Mac

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:21 AM PDT

I have an old Power Mac running Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.11). It is a Dual 2.3 GHz Power-PC G5 with 8 GB RAM. I have it running Tiger since that is the last OS that supports Classic (OS 9) (via Rosetta) and the kids had many Classic programs and games that they like.

As far as I know, Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) is the last OS that can be run on this machine. As it has 2 internal HD slots, I installed a 2 TB SSD in the empty one in order to install Leopard on it. The SSD is partitioned into 2 discs, 1 TB each, and formatted according to the Apple Partition Map (not GUID).

When trying to install Leopard OS from an original DVD, and choosing one of the SSD drives, the installation starts and stalls after a few seconds. The whole machine freezes, and I have to do a hard reset.

I also have an original Mac OS X 10.5.6 disc (© Apple 2009) and when I try to install from it, I get a window saying "This Operating System cannot be installed in this Mac" (!!!).

I then created a bootable USB flash memory with the iso image of Mac OS X 10.5.6 downloaded from the Internet. My Mac does not see it, even if I boot while pressing the Option key.

So I have not been able to install Leopard on a machine which is supposed to be able to run Leopard. Any help will be appreciated.

How do I get my documents folder back from an external drive?

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 03:15 PM PDT

A while ago, I moved my Documents folder to my external drive to save space on my mac using this tutorial:

Open Terminal Type in

cd /Users/Your User ID/

Then

ln -s /Volumes/External Drive Name/Documents Documents

And it worked great. Now, I need to move it back to its original location and I am unsure of how to do this. Can someone let me know?

This command:

ls -leOd ~/Documents

Prints this:

 lrwxr-xr-x  1 hannahcosta  staff  - 31 Dec 20  2020 /Users/hannahcosta/Documents -> /Volumes/MEMOREX USB/Documents/

So, I just need to figure out how to get it from the MEMOREX USB back to hannahcosta basically.

Byobu not working on new installation of OSX

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:37 AM PDT

I am trying to migrate from linux to osx, but apparently byobu is not working out-of-the-box on my machine. The Fn keys partially works. I can see the error message "no previos windows" and "no next windows" when I press F3 and F4, but pressing F2 does not succeed into creating a new window in byobu terminal.

I cannot find the right shortcut to split the terminal. I am trying to reconfigure byobu to specify my escape-sequence. Unfortunately, I cannot get rid of the following error:

(base) ➜ ~ byobu-config ERROR: Could not import the python snack module

To me, it seems that snack module is old, as the errors I see are related to print functions not having parenthesis (which were made mandatory in python3).

AMRestoreErrorDomain error 26 when restoring or reviving M1 macbook pro with apple configurator 2

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:00 AM PDT

I am trying to revive my m1 macbook pro after it started showing exclamation mark icon with restore url.

Now I am trying to revive it using my other intel-based macbook using apple configurator 2 but on step 3 installation, it fails and shows this error.

The System cannot be restored on this device. The operation couldn't be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error 26 - Failed to handle message type StatusMsg (fsck failed)) [AMRestoreErrorDomain – 0x1A (26)]

I also tried restore, but the error persists.

Specs and things I tried

  • Intel-based Mac OS version: Big Sur 11.4
  • Apple Configurator 2: Version 2.14
  • IPSW Files Tested: UniversalMac_11.3.1_20E241_Restore.ipsw UniversalMac_11.4_20F71_Restore.ipsw
  • Tried changing cables

Anyone run into this, or have any suggestions on what to do?

Spotlight Indexing of Google Drive File Stream Disabled on Restart

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:38 AM PDT

I recently got issued a Macbook Air M1, 2020 running macOS Big Sur 11.2.3. I rely on Google Drive file stream for my work and I have so far managed to successfully install the program. However, it seems I am having problems indexing the drive with Spotlight. Spotlight does not automatically index the drive, and I need to run: sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/GoogleDrive/ every time I boot the machine up. It takes a while to index the 80 gigabyte drive and then it works as I like it. The only problem is that when I restart the machine it appears the index is gone and when I run sudo mdutil -s /Volumes/GoogleDrive/ it indicates that indexing is disabled. I'm hoping there's a workaround where the index will stick around so I don't have to enable it and wait everytime I boot the machine up.

There are separate instructions for installing GDFS on an M1 Mac, but since my install worked pretty seamlessly I didn't boot into recovery mode or anything like it suggests in there. I'm wondering if allowing user management of kernel extensions will help this problem, as I'd rather not tamper too much with this work computer.

How to show split view spotlight results without clicking

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:04 AM PDT

I just upgraded to Big Sur.

Something I don't like is that Spotlight doesn't show BIG RESULTS for dictionary definitions and calculator, unless you click on them.

It used to be that the answer to the calculation was automatically displayed largely in a panel on the right half of the results.

Similarly for the dictionary, in fact Spotlight now doesn't show me the word's pronunciation, etymology, alternative definitions, etc, unless I click on the result physically with my mouse (maybe there is also a hidden keyboard shortcut for it)

How can I make it present the results as it used to in Catalina, without me having to do any additional action other than search?

Take webcam picture and screenshot at the same time

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:09 AM PDT

I'm trying to combine these two commands:

while :;do screencapture -x ~/Desktop/$(date +%y%m%d%H%M%S).png;sleep 300;done

and

imagesnap -t 300

I want to make a screenshot and a webcam photo at the same time every 5 minutes. It's my first time using the terminal, so I'm very new to this. It's probably very simple but I just can't figure it out.

Thank you for helping!

How to bypass password prompt with vnc connection from terminal

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 04:03 PM PDT

Previously, screen sharing to Catalina (10.15.7) from Big Sur (11.1) using terminal:

open vnc://[user]:[password]@[host].local

would open a screen sharing session without having to enter a password.

After the Big Sur 11.2 upgrade, Catalina now displays the login screen and asks for the password.

How can I correctly pass the password to the screen sharing session and bypass the login screen?

MacBook Air 2015; Login and recovery mode failed

Posted: 04 Jul 2021 03:08 AM PDT

I've been having problems with my MacBook Air (Early 2015). Since installing an update to 10.13.6 (From 10.13.3, I believe) the computer freezes once the progress bar fills up on the login screen. Rebooting has not resolved the issue. I have tried to enter safe mode and recovery mode (Command-R); the result is the same, and the computer will not transition to the recovery mode interface.

Option-command-R and Shift-option-command-R generate error messages -5101 and -2003 respectively, which don't seem to be often cited on these forums. Similarly, a PRAM/NVRAM reset has been unhelpful.

Single user mode (Command-S) works fine, but I haven't found any set of commands which has fixed my problem. Verbose mode is inconclusive, and the text stops updating after a minute or two, except for 'busy timeout 'IGPU'' messages. I have also considered that this may be a hardware issue, but have never experienced problems with this laptop before.

Has anyone experienced something like this before or does anyone have a possible solution?

Cheers

Edit: Attached are two images of the final screen before timeout messages start happening. The command line doesn't seem entirely consistent each time I start it up: some additional messages appeared here. Unfortunately, it doesn't let me post a video. enter image description here enter image description here

Note: the image at the bottom is of the latest state of the screen.

Regarding Target Disk mode, I don't have a second computer on hand right now, but I'd be able to set that up in the near future. I don't have an external display.)enter image description here enter image description here

UPDATE 2: enter image description here ![enter image description here] (https://i.stack.imgur.com/04dfs.jpg) enter image description here

enter image description here

These are logs after entering the command 'exit'. I got IGPU messages after this; this time though, the syntax is 'kextd stall, (240s): 'IGPU'. Hopefully this is helpful, but from what I understand it could mean any number of things. Presumably the AppleKeyStore messages are also useful?

  1. I now have access to another computer. Since this mode is mostly used to get files from a Mac, what specifically should I be looking out for?

  2. As I mentioned initially, 'Option-Command-R' and 'Shift-Option-Command-R' don't work either: I have since tried them again, and 'Option-Command-R' returns error message -5101 (after typing in correct internet password). 'Shift-Option-Command-R' boots into Internet Recovery (with the spinning globe), but then seems to go back to the login screen, which is always a dead end.

So I guess I should be looking for any fix to this which doesn't require the login screen to take effect. I haven't been able to find a solution allowing me to reinstall macOS and bypass recovery mode - is that possible?

EDIT: When the Mac is on, I also sporadically get the voiceover message 'To choose English as your main language, press the 'return' key...' I think this has something to do with recovery mode.

How to make remove free space and make APFS container take it up

Macbook Pro keyboard and mousepad hang after waking up while connected to VPN

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:07 PM PDT

I have a 2018 15" MacBook Pro running OS X Catalina 10.15.5 (19F101). When I am connected to the company VPN (via the built-in client, no third party VPNs), and my computer goes to sleep, it often freezes for a few minutes when waking up.

When this happens, upon tapping a key or the track pad the screen wakes up, but the mouse cursor is frozen, and the keyboard does not seem to register any input. The touch bar still works (I can adjust volume, brightness, etc), and if I press Esc then the screen immediately turns off, as though it realized "oh snap, I'm actually still asleep". If I wait 3-5 minutes, it will eventually shake itself out of this stupor and wake up properly.

It also only seems to happen if it goes to sleep for at least a few minutes (so, only on actual sleep, not just display blanking).

On MacOS 10.15.5, "About This Mac --> Storage" is not recognizing my RAID-1 drive correctly

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:04 PM PDT

I upgraded from El Capitan to Catalina 10.15.5 on a MacbookPro mid-2012 , the oldest HW that Catalina will run on. Then, I created a RAID-1 drive using 2 USB disks. "About This Mac --> Storage" is not showing a logical 500-gb RAID-1 drive, the 500-gb disk RAID member, and the 500-gb partition RAID member is not displayed, but the 1-tb disk for this partition, and the other 500-gb partition on the same disk, is displayed.

On the other hand:
(1) "Go -> Utility -> Disk Utility ", (2) "Finder", and (3) command-line utilities all show the correct drive structure: the logical RAID-1 drive, the 2 physical disks, the 2 partitions of the 1-tb disk. Further, the amount of available drive space, on all disks, all agree.

note:
I did a major reorg of my data when I upgraded to Catalina. My internal disk is SSD, and Catalina automatically formatted it to APFS. Next, I emptied the 500-gb and 1-tb disks into a 2-tb disk. I decided to re-format both (hfs+). Using Catalina's RAID tool, I created the RAID-1 drive.

Everything, except "About This Mac --> Storage", looks great so I am proceeding. So, I'm just reporting this and thinking this has something to do with a mid-2012 MacBook Pro being the oldest HW to support Catalina. Since data is critical to me these days, please tell me if I should be concerned about the strange "About This Mac --> Storage" result.

Creating a bootable macOS installer error

I'm following How to create a bootable installer for macOS guide by Apple, but it's giving me an error. When I execute

VPN breaks AirDrop, Sidecar etc. - any idea how to set up VPN to enable them?

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 02:43 PM PDT

My workplace uses Cisco AnyConnect VPN (but I have seen same problems with other VPNs as well, eg. here) and it seems to break AirDrop, Sidecar and similar Apple's local network services.

While I am connected to VPN on my macbook, I cannot AirDrop files to my macbook, and Sidecar doesn't start (shows a timeout error after a while). When I disconnect, everything works again.

Is there a know set of things (ports, port ranges, network broadcasts?) I could change or enable in VPN settings so that the 'Apple stuff' would still be routed to a local network at home? It seems that now everything gets routed into work VPN.

Thanks! I googled, but so far found only threads asking for help, with no solution.

I am composing an Email in the native Mac.app in OSX Mojave.

I drag the image and as soon as the image is dragged the whole text-area turns grey and becomes unresponsive:

"brew link node" creates/removes different number of symlinks when repeated

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT

I was upgrading Node.js node through Homebrew's brew upgrade, and it didn't link correctly.

$ brew update
(snip-snip formulae were updated)
$ brew upgrade
(snip-snip other upgrades)
==> Upgrading node
==> Downloading http://nodejs.org/dist/v0.8.11/node-v0.8.11.tar.gz
######################################################################## 100.0%
==> ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11
==> make install
==> Caveats
Homebrew installed npm.
We recommend prepending the following path to your PATH environment
variable to have npm-installed binaries picked up:
/usr/local/share/npm/bin
Warning: Could not link node. Unlinking...
Error: The brew link step did not complete successfully
The formula built, but is not symlinked into /usr/local
You can try again using `brew link node'
==> Summary
/usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11: 856 files, 13M, built in 108 seconds
(snip-snip other upgrades)

I followed the recommended steps to force linking it.

$ brew link node
Linking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0... Warning: Could not link node. Unlinking...

Error: Could not symlink file: /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11/lib/node_modules/npm/scripts/relocate.sh
Target /usr/local/lib/node_modules/npm/scripts/relocate.sh already exists. You may need to delete it.
To force the link and delete this file, do:
brew link -f formula_name

To list all files that would be deleted:
brew link -n formula_name
$ brew link -f node
Linking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11... 756 symlinks created

I was stunned with the number of symlinks, so out of curiosity I tried linking it again.

$ brew unlink node
Unlinking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11... 755 links removed
$ brew link node
Linking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11... 352 symlinks created
$ brew link node
Warning: Already linked: /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11
$ which node
/usr/local/bin/node
$ brew unlink node
Unlinking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11... 351 links removed
$ brew link node
Linking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11... 304 symlinks created
$ brew unlink node
Unlinking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11... 303 links removed
$ brew link node
Linking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11... 304 symlinks created
$ brew unlink node
Unlinking /usr/local/Cellar/node/0.8.11... 303 links removed

The process stabilizes at 304/303.

  1. Why so many symlinks?
  2. Why does the link/unlink number change from 756 to 303?

Edit: ran the same update/upgrade/link/unlink procedure on a colleague's computer - in this case the symlinks went from 775 to 318 to 226, where it stabilized. Does anyone else have similar numbers? Do they depend on other installed brew recipes, or perhaps on npm modules?

How is my $PATH variable built on macOS?

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT

I've recently installed Homebrew on my Mac and it's complaining that /usr/bin occurs before /usr/local/bin in my $PATH variable, meaning that system-provided programs will be used instead of those installed with Homebrew.

My .bashrc is configured in a set of separate files, as per this screencast. This means that ~/.bash_profile looks like this:

if [ -f ~/.bashrc ];  then    source ~/.bashrc  fi

~/.bashrc looks like this:

source ~/bin/dotfiles/bashrc

and ~/bin/dotfiles/bashrc looks like this:

. ~/bin/dotfiles/bash/env  . ~/bin/dotfiles/bash/config  . ~/bin/dotfiles/bash/aliases

~/bin/dotfiles/bash/env, which is where I set my $PATH variable, looks like this:

export EDITOR="kom"  export PATH=some/path/at/start:usr/local/bin:/Users/jim/pear/bin:~/bin:/Users/jim/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin:/Users/jim/bin/bashscripts:some/path/at/end:$PATH

I've added some/path/at/start and some/path/at/end for debugging purposes, since when I try echo $PATH I get this:

/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/jim/bin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:some/path/at/start:usr/local/bin:/Users/jim/pear/bin:/Users/jim/bin:/Users/jim/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin:/Users/jim/bin/bashscripts:some/path/at/end:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin

That is, there's a load of other stuff being loaded into the $PATH variable that I can't control in the configuration I've outlined above. Any ideas as to where this stuff is loaded from, so that I can go about changing it and moving /usr/local/bin before /usr/bin?

How to install and override Vim in Mountain Lion for +ruby +python support?

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:45 PM PDT

I want to install and override the current vim version in Mountain Lion due to me needing +ruby & +python support. I am particularly interested in using the brew commands from Homebrew but I haven't seen a current best practice procedure for it (or even a bundled recipe covering vim). I am open to other ways to accomplish buildig +ruby and +python into vim.

Deleting VPN Configuration Files From Network System Preferences

Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:27 PM PDT

Unfortunately I used a bad VPN service called VPN OneClick Pro. When you uninstall the app it does not remove the VPN configuration files it creates in Network in System Preferences.

So in other words, when you open System Preferences and then click on Network, to your left you always see your Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Firewire, etc. VPN OneClick Pro places about 28 VPN Configuration files. The minus button "-" has been greyed out so removing them is impossible.

How do I remove the remnants ?
